ASA Rules There’s No Shame in Harvey Nichols’ Game

Britain’s Advertising Standards Authority has had its share of questionable decisions in the past. From deeming Hailee Steinfeld‘s Miu Miu ads “irresponsible” for depicting the teen actress on railroad tracks to banning Dakota Fanning‘s Marc Jacobs “Oh Lola” ads for being “sexually provocative.” Well it seems the ASA has loosened up a little — at least when it comes to loose women — giving a controversial ”Walk of Shame” video by Harvey Nichols a thumbs up. And maybe a high five.

After receiving a handful of complaints from viewers — ranging from accusations of classism, weightism, and the less popular sluttism — the ASA decided to take the ad under consideration.

Originally debuting in December, the video shows an all-too familiar situation: some hot disheveled messes in last night’s Joyce Leslie, hair a rat’s nest, makeup smeared, drunkenly stumbling out with the trash on their walk of shame home.

We’ve all been there. Some of us live there; threw up a condo there; thinking of putting in a coy pond there. Might even add a guest house there.

Then at the end of the ad, a lady who pulled it together at Harvey Nichols is seen, still glamorous and carefree, coming home at the crack of dawn. No shame in her walk at all. Rather, Harvey’s intention ”was to show that women could also do the ‘stride of pride’, which was how men were popularly referred to in the same situation.”

Well, the advertising watchdog bought it. In its ruling, the ASA claimed the confident, well-appointed lady redeemed the ad and therefore it “did not reinforce negative stereotypes of women generally or women who chose to have casual sex in particular”.

You hear that, gals?! It’s okay to lay it down as long as you can eventually class it back up. Which I’ve been saying for ages now.

As for being demeaning towards women of a lower class or a more robust frame, the ASA added that the video didn’t imply ”that lower-class women who had one-night stands should feel shame whilst more wealthy women should feel proud, or that it mocked less wealthy women who did not have ‘model’ figures.”

Sounds like on a couple of occasions the Advertising Standards Authority has crawled home without its panties, too. What do you think? Is the ad offensive or just keepin’ it real? [Telegraph]

It’s not easy being Hailee Steinfeld. Sure, being prematurely gorgeous and precociously talented, earning an Oscar nomination while barely in high school, having designers clamor to dress you for the red carpet and place you in their ad campaigns seems like a dream. And for all intents and purposes it is. But leave it to the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority to rain all over the young actress’ somnambulant parade.

The 14-year-old Steinfeld is seen sitting on a railroad track, wiping away what appears to be tears, in this image from Miu Miu‘s fall 2011 campaign, shot by Bruce Weber. Following their ban on fellow underaged starlet Dakota Fanning‘s “sexually provocative” ad for Marc Jacobs‘ “Oh Lola!” fragrance, the ASA has deemed the Miu Miu ad “irresponsible” for depicting a child in an unsafe location.

Parent company Prada argues that the allegedly offensive photos is ”part of a serious, high-fashion campaign” and “based on the set of an imaginary film,” adding that Steinfeld ”could have easily moved from where she was sitting because she was not restrained in any way.” But considering her age, the ASA is standing their moral-high ground. Oh No-la! UK Bans Dakota Fanning’s Oh Lola! Ads for Marc Jacobs

What is the world coming to when a doe-eyed ingenue can’t have a giant bottle in the shape of a flower resting suggestively between her jailbait thighs? Le sigh. The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority has banned ads for Marc Jacobs‘ new fragrance “Oh Lola!” starring one Ms. Dakota Fanning for being “sexually provocative.”

After a series of complaints from a bunch of teetotaling busybodies, the ASA responded with this bit of lameness: “We noted that the model was holding up the perfume bottle which rested in her lap between her legs and we considered that its position was sexually provocative. We understood the model was 17 years old but we considered she looked under the age of 16. We considered that the length of her dress, her leg and position of the perfume bottle drew attention to her sexuality. Because of that, along with her appearance, we considered the ad could be seen to sexualise a child.”

Coty, the makers of “Oh Lola!,” disagree with the ASA, saying that Dakota is not “inappropriately sexualized” as there are no “private body parts or sexual activity” on display and that the ASA is just a bunch of sicko pervs in need of a good lay. Okay, that last part was my own little addition.

Describing the scent as “sensual” and being “more Lolita than Lola,” Jacobs, for his part, knew exactly what he was doing when he cast the elder Fanning after seeing her get all lesbionic with co-star Kristen “Dead Eyes” Stewart in The Runaways: being banned is the highest form of flattery.

And what’s worse, the stars of these Sears catalogs are those blights on the landscape of pop culture, the sisters Kardashian. Leibovitz shot them for Kardashian Kollection, their new line of clothing with the mass retailer and apparently she didn’t give two shits about it. - And speaking of people selling out for the Kardashians, Vera Wang is selling knock-offs of the wedding dresses she created for the publicity stunt people refer to as Kim Kardashian‘s wedding, to be sold through her David’s Bridal diffusion line. [E!]

- Catherine Malandrino has cancelled her presentation this season, claiming that the brand is “in transition” and “refocusing.” [Page Six]

- Snooki‘s coming out with a fragrance and being the classy broad she is, she says it will be “flirty and bubbly, you know, like my personality, and obviously something DTF.” (for those out of the Jersey Shore loop, that’s “down to fuck”) So it will smell like a used hot tub, greasy hair extensions and stale lube? Oprah’s Final Shows and the Alleged Apocalypse Are But Days Away

Coincidence? I think not. While religious nut-jobs continue to desperately hope for the end of the world, superstars of film, music and television gathered to celebrate something that actually matters. OOOOPRAAAAAAAAH!

Everyone and their post-partum depressed mother hovered on down to Chicago’s United Center for the filming of Surprise Oprah! A Farewell Spectacular — her two penultimate shows before the ~~Apocalypse~~ finale May 25th.

Oprah, through forced laughter: "Who the hell let you in here?"

Tom Hanks, noted maniac Tom Cruise, noted maniac Madonna, Dakota Fanning, Halle Berry, noted coma victim Katie Holmes, scissor sisters Queen Latifah and Rosie O’Donnell, the Pinkett-Smiths and BFFs Gayle King and Maria Shriver — who had a brave face put on for her last minute as her husband had just admitted that in addition to iron he was pumping the help — all showed up to “surprise” and pay tribute to their queen.

Sidebar: Oprah is omniscient, like all deities, so there was no pulling the wool over those bag-ridden eyes.

Madonna: "I can barely get my arms around you!"/ Oprah: "Keep trying."

Surprise performers included Beyoncé (who had to perform “Run the World (Girls)” twice at the behest of producers), Patti LaBelle and Josh Groban (“Over the Rainbow”), Stevie Wonder and Jamie Foxx (“Isn’t She Lovely,” and Stevie even wrote a new song for Oprah that will no doubt be adopted as our national anthem), as well as Kristin Chenoweth, Alicia Keys, Usher and another queen in her own right, Aretha Franklin, who took everyone to church with “Amazing Grace.”

Simon Cowell, openly bored.

Someone even let Stedman out of his cage to make a little speech!

And of course what tribute to Oprah would be complete without national treasure and global renaissance woman Dr. Maya Angelou? The 83-year-old offered up a poem to honor O. Luckily a box of tissues was on hand for each audience member, tucked knowingly under their seats.

Oprah clearly doesn’t fuck around and considering these were her second and third-to-last shows, I can only imagine what the final episode will be: disaster.

It appears to be a bottle of Marc Jacobs‘ perfume “Oh Lola.” Could it be the young, lovely Dakota Fanning is the new face of his latest fragrance? Although not confirmed, it seems these ad photos shot by Juergen Teller are the answer. No stranger to the label, Fanning was the face of the Marc Jacobs Spring 2007 collection. Finally, the dolls of my dreams have bitch-slapped their way onto store shelves; Lauren Conrad is apparently classier than Snooki (yeah, right); and Elle Fanning is clearly outshining older sister Dakota thanks to the Mulleavy sisters.

- Alexis and Krystal Carrington have been turned into Barbie dolls for the 30th anniversary of Dynasty. Mattel has somehow perfected Alexis’ signature snide British bitchery though I was hoping Krystal would have the linebacker shoulders of her real life counterpart. They should’ve just dressed Ken up in drag…not like he has any business to tuck. [Gawker]

- Lauren Conrad claims that her new reality show, which would follow the creation of her new line, was “too high brow” for MTV. Of course in MTV speak, “high brow” means boring and lacking enough jacuzzi’d threesomes. [Fashionista]

- ESPN‘s manly “commentators drool over other men’s abs, thighs and guns. ESPN The Magazine’s response to the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue is its Body issue, which features entirely naked men (and some women).” Meanwhile, when I drool over other men’s abs, thighs and guns it’s all, “Dude, stop filming me in the shower.” Double standards. - Gemma Ward returns for her first editorial in literally one hundred years. A little flat, but then again it’s for some Australian magazine no one cares about. Call me when she’s in a European Vogue and I might pick up. [Fashionista]

- Even Steven Shia LeBouf was handcuffed after getting into a bar fight in L.A. The fight erupted after some guy called the Transformers star a “f*gg*t,” but when Shia lunged at him he got ka-powed in the face and suffered a split lip. That’s not nice at all! It doesn’t really matter where you are or where you’re going, what they say is true you can find fashion anywhere, or at least inspiration. From everyday life to the hours of television we might spend watching, throughout time it’s always a good way to go back a couple years and review all the pop-culture and bizarre fashions of our past style movie favorites. From the wicked 90′s fur to crazy six inch flip-flops let the nostalgia or regrets begin!

Clueless (1995)- If this 90′s classic wasn’t already on your top 10 movies list of style and rich girl ways well then start jotting! Alicia Silverstone is the best prepster out there, and no matter how old we are or how many fashion trends pass by Clueless will always remain a fashion favorite… through knee-high socks, more than enough argyle to handle, feminine school girl blazzers and especially because Britney Murphy was in it too!

Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion (1997)- A little on the dumb-ass side and I’m pretty sure no one would wear as much metallic and glitter as these two on screen best friends, but it’s still fun to watch their adventure in going back to their high school reunion and dominating the Madonna-inspired blasts from the pasts.

Spice World (1997)- Victoria Beckham‘s style may be taking over the style headlines a lot more than the Spice Girls do now, but it doesn’t mean that we would ever forget baby spice, scary spice, ginger spice, posh spice, sporty spice, or any other spices that I’m forgetting in between!

Jawbreaker (1999)- Catty and backstabbing what other way would a girl like their movies, when you accidentally kill your best friend in your favorite pumps?

The Virgin Suicides (1999)- When it comes to Kristen Dunst’s careless ways she makes any film look awesome! Sofia Coppola (director) filmed the movie in an angelic sort of sunlight state, and with the simplicity of the style on the girls, from sundresses to school outfits, the obsession of five boys falling in love with mysterious sisters begins, and they watch them on the road to suicide.

Factory Girl (2006)- Starring Sienna Miller as Edie Sedgwick a muse of all muses for the New York City life style of Andy Warhol. Not to mention, Mary-Kate Olsen gets her five minutes of fame getting to rock the furs and the smoking glam of this crazy 1960′s fashion filled film.

500 Days of Summer (2009)- Zooey Deschanel would be the perfect heart breaking type girl, with her vintage dresses and humorous ways as she completes every girls dream to crush the boy who’s insanely in love with her in nonchalant ways.

Whip It (2009)- Ellen Page plays a rebellious small town girl who creates a wicked life for herself in Austin, TX. And along with Drew Barrymoore and Landon Pigg she rocks her indie-child style with combat boots, random skirts, and bizarre rock band tees!

The Runaways (2010)- When hearing the names Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart you don’t normally think of one on one girl make out sessions or drug addict… which in their case would be a good thing but luckily these two actresses rocked the hell out of bringing the Joan Jett and Cherie Curie’s wild child style to life!

Black Swan (2010)- Obviously what kind of timeline would this be without listing Natalie Portman’s surprise act of dealing with perfection and giving us a mental image of just how good Rodarte ballet wear could be!

Catch Richard Phillips’ Most Wanted Through March 8th

New York-based contemporary artist Richard Phillips has chosen some of the world’s most recognizable faces — including Taylor Swift, Zac Efron, Dakota Fanning, Kristen Stewart and Leonardo DiCaprio – for “Most Wanted,” a new series of large-scale oil paintings on view now in his solo show at the White Cube gallery in London.

The artist has captured ten superstars from TV, movies and music and their rehearsed red carpet expressions, against backdrops branded by Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci and YSL, among others.

Phillips, who also shows at the Gagosian Gallery in New York, has already amassed some pop-culture cred – his paintings are featured regularly on Gossip Girl, and he’s collaborated with Jimmy Choo, MAC Cosmetics, Cartier, and Mont Blanc, among others.

“Most Wanted” will be on display at London’s White Cube gallery from now until March 8th.

Get Your Notebooks, Elle Fanning Is Taking You to School

The New York Times claims the red carpet is stylish again and mentions Elle Fanning‘s couture coming-of-age in particular: “the 12-year-old star…has been schooling her elders all week…” And what, pray tell, is the reason for this sudden sartorial uptick? Why, the reason for everything else, of course: Cher.

NYT: “Also, Cher is back. Did you see that raunchy Julien Macdonald dress and the red wig?”

See it? I lived in it.

Geriatric perfection.

A few hundred years Cher’s junior, Fanning was flawless nonetheless in head-to-toe, off-the-runway Rodarte for the New York premiere of Sofia Coppola‘s new film, Somewhere. Then for the Hollywood premiere she wore Valentino Haute Couture.

Meanwhile, she’s barely through puberty and is dressing better than half the starlets, twice her age.

And yes I am looking at you, Kate Hudson.

So are female stars dressing better and taking more chances? Well, yes and no. For every Elle Fanning in Rodarte or Carey Mulligan in Prada, there’s bound to be someone abusing McQueen or horribly out of place in Dior.

What we have are young women who grew up on fashion magazines and have a love, interest and knowledge of fashion and dressing up. Fashion is more democratic than ever, so it’s only natural for a twelve-year old to embrace a heady brand like Rodarte.

Especially when her older sister has been turning it out for ages. And with awards season upon us, Elle and the rest of young Hollywood will have plenty opportunities to wow, stun, confuse and confound us.

Beckham’s lawyers wanted to review all the photos before the ads ran, and Teller refused, so he called Victoria directly instead and the rest is fashion history.

I’m unsure what Stewart’s hair will look like down, but by the way she always has it up, I’m guessing she doesn’t like it. It can’t be that bad! It’s a lot darker, kindof reminds me of Shannyn Sossamon, and Stewie should take that as a HUGE compliment from me.
