Bowie, particularly his high glam Ziggy Stardust era, has been referenced to death in fashion spreads and understandably so — what with all that glitter, silver and shimmer. So it’s fitting that the high glam Guinness should get in touch with her inner Thin White Duke. With help from stylist Lotta Aspenberg, the heiress fits perfectly into the Stardust memory. “Rebel, rebel, how could they know?/Hot tramp, I love you so!”

“The dandy aspect of my of my dress stems from my love of literature – Wilde, Proust and Gide. It is also since I didn’t get to go to Eaton! Also, the way a jacket is constructed is very geometric and I like to adjust things a very small amount so I work very closely with the tailor. I like the idea of being a bit androgynous.” – On the Dandy section of the exhibition at FIT.

The deluxe 5×7  edition runs a cool $1500 but if you don’t feel like breaking the bank, the standard edition — at 3 ft x 5 ft — is only a measly $375. The historic issue features work from Bruce Weber, the Stevens (Klein and Meisel), Mario Sorrenti, Karl Lagerfeld and a cadre of other artists and photographers given, as Visionaire puts it, “the forum to take their visions to a massive scale.”

So who wants to go halfsies on the deluxe edition? The standard edition is nice and all, but since the theme of the issue is “Larger than Life,” you might as well go big or go home. [Visionaire]

First appearing as part of Vanity Fair‘s March 1997 “Swinging London” feature, the portrait was acquired with the help of Daphne Guinness, a close friend of both McQueen and Blow. La Chapelle and Guinness were in London last week for the induction ceremony. [DLC.com]

Guinness is no neophyte to the cinematic world, having executive produced the Oscar-nominated short, Cashback by the extrememly photogenic Sean Ellis and producing and starring in The Black and White Maze of the Painted Zebra, co-starring professional pretty person, Tyson Ballou. The latter, as described by IMDb, is “an intense psychological portrait of a baseball legend who has gone over the brink and whose insanity spreads like a virus.”

Which sounds right up Guinness’ alley. Her tastes, however, skew more to the classics, and ”French films of Marguerite Duras … Jean Seberg and Gene Tierney and Hollywood films of the golden era.” As my favorite film since I was 8 years old has been 1940′s The Philadelphia Story, I smell a movie night! Daph and I can totes do each other’s hair and pretend to eat marshmallows and make prank phone calls to Anna Wintour. [Page Six]

M. Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton was born a thousand years ago in 1821 and established his company in 1854 after coming to Paris with only a few francs in his pocket at the age of 14. Typical rags to riches story. After Vuitton died, his son Georges expanded the company and started the world’s first designer label, introducing the now iconic LV mongram in the process.

To commemorate 150 years of luxury, author Stephanie Bonvicini began her research on Louis Vuitton: A French Saga. Initially she had the full cooperation of LVMH, but when the question arose of Vuitton’s activities from 1930 to 1945, they used the old “the files were destroyed in a fire” excuse.

Which always means Nazi-sympathizing. Anyone with undocumented activities between those years is usually a Nazi. Or dead.

Undeterred, Bonvicini dug through some historical archives and found that Louis Vuitton was the only store allowed to stay open in Vichy, where fantastically-mustachioed French general Philippe Pétain had established his puppet government backed by the Nazi government, the Vichy regime. Other shops, including Van Cleef & Arpels, had been shut down.

Interviewing surviving members of the Vuitton family, Bonvicini discovered that Gaston, Louis’ grandson and then-head of the company, had instructed his son Henry to forge an alliance with Pétain to keep the business alive. Compromise was a general practice among fashion houses during WWII — both Dior and Chanel whored themselves out to preserve French couture — but Vuitton ended up, rather humiliatingly, producing some 2500 busts of Pétain and other artifacts glorifying his grand mustache, as part of that compromise.

According to Bonvicini, ”Part of the collaboration was due to the family’s obsession with the survival of the company, and part down to the fact that there was a certain sympathy with the regime’s rightwing views.” Henry, for his part, was among the first Frenchmen to be decorated by the Vichy regime for his patriotic (?) efforts.

After these facts came to light, LVMH, who had previously promised to throw their full support behind Bonvicini’s book, turned a blind eye to it, claiming the author “exaggerated the Vichy episode”: ”This is ancient history. The book covers a period when it was family-run and long before it became part of LVMH. We are diverse, tolerant and all the things a modern company should be.”

Well, of all the Nazi-loving going on in fashion history, this is perhaps the most tame. After all, it’s not like Hitler came to any of the Vuitton family weddings. I mean, seriously, the Guinness family took that shit to a whole other level.  [Guardian]

Friends in Reich Places: Diana Mitford with Hitler

Daphne’s grandparents, Diana Mitford* and Sir Oswald Mosley, were fascists till the very end. Diana went to Germany in 1934 to visit her younger sister, Unity. There they attended the first Nuremberg rally and the following year, Unity introduced Diana to Hitler, with whom she was very good friends. Diana also chummed it up with the Führer, who in 1936, generously provided a Mercedes-Benz to chauffeur her to the Berlin Olympics.

That same year, Diana married British aristocrat and founder of the British Union of Fascists, Oswald Mosley  – after abandoning first husband Byron Guinness for him – at the home of the Nazi’s Minister of Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels with Hitler in attendance. I wonder if the bride wore Christian Dior or if she just wrapped herself in a giant Swastika and called it a day?

Life was just peachy for the Grandparents Guinness until over lunch in 1939, Hitler confided in Diana that war was inevitable. In September of that year, Britain declared war on Germany, prompting Unity Mitford to shoot herself in the head. Daphne wondered aloud, in her brilliant profile in The New Yorker, ”Why didn’t Unity shoot Hitler instead of herself? Then we’d be descended from heroes instead of from villains.” Unity survived the suicide attempt but doctors thought it too dangerous to remove the bullet and she subsequently died of meningitis caused by the cerebral swelling around it in 1948.

In 1940, Oswald was arrested, along with other English fascists, and the British Union of Fascists was outlawed. After the birth of her fourth son, Diana was also arrested and interned in London’s Holloway Prison for women. The couple was initially held separately, but thanks to Winston Churchill‘s intervention — Churchill seems to have intervened a lot on behalf of the Nazis — both Diana and Oswald spent their time locked up together at Holloway. Oswald fell ill during their imprisonment and the Mosleys were released from there in November 1943, to spend the rest of the war under house arrest.

Daphne was close to both her grands, remembering “fascinating conversations around the dinner table about books, politics, art, whatever” with her grandfather. She did, however, try to get to the heart of her grandmother’s fascination with Hitler: “I said, ‘Granny, it just can’t be right,’ and she just said, ‘He didn’t photograph well.’ She said he was very, very funny.” True to form, Diana Mitford was a Nazi-lover til the day she died. Among her personal effects discovered after her death was a diamond swastika. No word if Daphne was bequeathed it in the will. [Jezebel]

Of the collaboration, Lilo said that she thinks “maybe people’s perceptions of me have been kind of taken out of context just from what you see and read.” Yeah, you’d think from seeing and reading things that Lindsay Lohan is an unemployable mass of blond extensions, temper tantrums and comped alcohol who’s next acting role is more likely in a straight-to-DVD frat film than a legitimate movie…but that can’t be right. Front Row: Eschewing her usual runway theatrics, Gwen opted for a low-key presentation but there was a crying toddler that stole a lot of attention.

The 21-piece collection is composed of “rich, seasonal hues” and will expand internationally in January after its launch in North America.

A brief history of the fascinator:

Freedman turned to a wide variety of artists, architects and interior designers, including Rafael de Cárdenas, Joe Grillo, Peter Shelton and Lee F. Mindel of Shelton, Mindel & Associates and Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz, giving them carte blanche to create their own environments: “I said, ‘Here’s your space. That’s your room. Within that room I really want you to let your imagination fly,’” he explained.

Housed in those environments are looks by  Stella McCartney, Givenchy, Rick Owens, Holms + Yang, Azzedine Alaïa, Chloé and Céline.

Since his first installation – when Daphne Guinness turned the Barneys windows into her personal dressing room before the Met Gala — Freedman has tried “to bring in different kinds of talent to do projects and make something new and fresh.” Whereas Doonan’s windows were often whimsical and heavy on the kitsch, Freedman said he hopes to “have a dialogue between fashion and [other disciplines such as] art, design, music and architecture.”

So I guess that means no ball gowns made of recycled coffee cans? [WWD]

Chanel Iman in BCBG Max Azria — Lady and the vamp! Looks like Chanel and Karolina both hopped on the same 70s soul train, but with a bit of leg, a flash of cleav and a shoulder or two, Chanel is ready to steam up some mirrored disco balls.

Call me crazy just as long as you call Michelle Harper perfect. I’m not sure what she’s wearing, but I want one in every color.

Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen in The Row — I’m convulsing over MK’s gold lamé jacket, I just wish Ash had chosen to accessorize a little more. Hair up, statement necklace and a cat eye never hurt anyone. The Row bags, while cute, also look like mini-briefcases, which for an evening dress, is a little jarring.

Vera Wang in Vera Wang – Vera, Vera, Vera. While I love a cowl neck, this look makes Morticia Addams look like Patricia Goddamn Field. Where’s the color? Where’s the fun? I would’ve taken a beading wedding gown over this funereal frump any day of the week.

Erin Fetherston in Erin Fetherston — The CFDAs might have to instill a ban on designers dressing themselves. Though the dress is lovely — and that bang is flawless — the color washes Erin out completely. Also, another lack of accessories! Does no one wear jewelry anymore?

Joy Bryant (and Rachel Roy) in Rachel Roy — For the permanent record, Rachel looks good, not her best look, but she gets a passing grade. Barely. Because after all, she also dressed Joy, who’s going to have to stay after school and bang the erasers. And from the looks of that dress, she might also be banging the janitor.

Tory Burch in Tory Burch — You can try to dress up a burlap sack as much as possible, but then it’s just a burlap sack with some awful polka dots and some even more awful ill-placed beads. Or bottlecaps. What are those actually?

Sessilee Lopez in Zac Posen — One question: why? An old lady dress on a stunning, young supermodel still looks like an old lady dress. And frankly, I doubt any dames of a certain age would be caught dead wearing this. It’s unflattering, there’s too much going on about the bodice and worst of all it looks cheap. Zac, I would like to see you in my office. Bring the butt paddle.

Since its record-breaking opening day, over 150,000 people have seen Savage Beauty, resulting in lines, crowds and kilt-tearing. But starting Monday, June 6th, it will be even easier to go on McQueen’s Magical Mystery Tour.

“Met Mondays with McQueen” will allow visitors –  for $50 — access to the exhibit between 9:30 am and 2:30 pm when the rest of the museum is closed. It would kind of be like Night at the Museum but if Ben Stiller was played by Daphne Guinness and instead of dinosaurs, the mannequins came to life and started catwalking.

Meanwhile, I smell a sequel…. [WWD]

- Like that great poet — what was his name, oh yes, Biggie Smalls — once said, “Mo Money, Mo Problems.” Those problems just involve cutting back on the Birkin allowance.

Referring to her decision to snatch up Blow’s wardrobe as “probably the maddest…ever,” she explains that she did so not out of label lust but out of a desire to preserve Isabella Blow’s unique aesthetic:

“I thought what’s going to happen is [the pieces are] going to be lost. She had an incredible eye and she truly loved her pieces, they’re like a diary. I didn’t want to buy them and wear them, I wanted to buy them and keep them because I think it’s very interesting for students and people who are interested in fashion to see.”

Blow had introduced McQueen to Guinness while he was working for Givenchy, just as she had introduced him to Hamish Bowles years before. And though Daphne initially didn’t want to meet him, they became fast friends and as the lone survivor she certainly feels an obligation to keep both McQueen’s and Blow’s legacies alive:

“[The exhibition is] a very bittersweet thing, because you want to celebrate your friends but then it’s like where are they and why aren’t they here?” [The Cut]

- Editor Casual seems to be running rampant in fashion as Carine Roitfeld donned corduroy jeans and a “no-name” T-shirt (thank god the shoe came to work) for an interview with a no-name mag about her current state. Turns out she never had any plans to replace Anna Wintour at Vogue (remember that plotline from Devil Wears Prada?), she just likes fucking with us: “I like to provoke. I’m very French. In America, they’re not even allowed to show a hint of nipple in photos. Anna Wintour is the most powerful woman in the global fashion industry, the first lady of fashion. She’s a politician; I’m a stylist. They are two very different jobs. Incidentally, despite all the rumors, she is actually very nice.” What we don’t know is that Anna was hanging from the ceiling the entire time. [Fashionologie]

- In the wake of the disaster in Japan (you know, the whole country ceasing to exist and everything) Uniqlo‘s parent company Fast Retailing will donate 1.4 billion yen ($300 million…it sounds more impressive in yen) to organizations aiding the crisis and 700 million yen in clothing. 7. Charles Albert Sterling Silver Spiked Cuff, $650: This cuff is guaranteed to turn heads. It  is very Gaga, Daphne Guinness, and Anna Dello Russo. It can be the signature piece for the very bold and daring.

Guinness has a natural flare for the dramatic. And that’s putting it lightly. Therefore a moody, Gothic, old Hollywood-style editorial is right up her darkened, cinematic alley.

And tip of the cap to Mr. Adams for a beautiful series of images, though the real star here is the amazing styling by Lotta Aspenberg. There’s lace, headpieces, capes and a hat that looks like a log draped in seaweed.

Guinness can carry avant-garde and haute couture better than any fashion icon today, and that’s including a certain pantless pop superstar. It’s wonderful to see her captured in a spread that matches her unique, batshit but always stunning aesthetic.

For the NARS holiday 2010 collection they decided to multiply their normal dose of Daphne. Images were taken for the collection to look as if viewed through a kaleidoscope. “She is so amazing that we thought we would multiply her image 5, 10 times with the mirrors,” says Francois Nars. The heiress’s downstairs neighbors, Karim and Tina Samii, want Guinness legally barred from taking baths in her $15 million  apartment after flooding their $12 million dollar apartment four times.

Only $12 million? Step your game up, Samiis. Your dealing with an heiress, here. She doesn’t even spend that much time in that apartment, and when she does, she’s using it as a Slip-n-Slide with Karl Lagerfeld and Marc Jacobs.

The Samiis are seeking “in excess of $1 million” for repairs and “mental anguish.” Though if you ask me, they should use that money to add a gold bidet and/or some new furniture to spruce that dump up.

Not only was Tom Ford’s women’s wear release presentation a total secret, with only limited details of the event revealed to the press, only a select few were invited and rumor has it that they all signed confidentiality agreements. On top of that, we hear that only one photographer was allowed inside, chosen by Tom, to take the exclusive photos which will be released sometime in January. AND, now, apparently the women who modeled the collection were ALL celebrities, including Beyoncé, Julianne Moore, Daphne Guinness and more. Genius!

Leave it to eccentric style icon Daphne Guinness to tell it like it is. Earlier this week, we reminded you of Cher Horowitz’s unforgettable quote in Clueless about the state of fashion among teenage boys in the 90’s.

“It looks like they just fell out of bed and put on some baggy pants and take their greasy hair — ew — and cover it up with a backwards cap and like, we’re expected to swoon?”

We felt Cher’s pain, and apparently Daphne does, too. While at a fashion event in Mayfair, Guinness opened up about her disappointment in the way people today dress. Remember, this is coming from a woman who wears Rick Owens to work out.

“You can tell the state of civilization by the way people dress. If the people who fought two World Wars came back to 2010 and saw all of us running around in tracksuits, what would they think? It is just being sloppy. And it is not about the money, it is a mindset.”

And on the way people treat their bodies:

“I have nothing against people who are round. I am far too thin, for example. I’d really love to put on a few pounds. But I certainly think some people look tremendously unhealthy — and quite unhappy actually.”

So to review — if Guinness were to add on to our list of trends we miss, dressing up would be number one. Note to self — throw out all sweatpants. It’s a small price to pay to heed a genius’ advice.

Daphne Guinness isn’t impressed by the state of modern dress, believing the public don’t make enough effort to attire their selves properly.

“You can tell the state of civilisation by the way people dress,” said Guinness. “If the people who fought two World Wars came back to 2010 and saw all of us running around in tracksuits, what would they think? It is just about being sloppy. And it is not about the money – it is a mindset.”

The 42- year-old heiress also admitted to being “too thin”.

“I’d love to put on a few pounds,” she told the Daily Mail. “But I certainly think some people look tremendously unhealthy – and quite unhappy actually. I have nothing against people who are round.”
