1. Crystal Renn

Crystal Renn is leading the charge for plus-sized models. Renn, a size 8, posed for five major ad campaigns and seven French Vogue spreads last year alone.

2. Whitney Thompson

You may remember Whitney from America’s Next Top Model season 10 – she won the entire competition. Whitney went on to pose for Forever 21, Saks Fifth Avenue, People Magazine, Seventeen Magazine and a host of other fashion ads and editorials.

3. Marquita Pring

Marquita is a Ford girl who wears size 41-35-46. She’s been featured in Vogue, Vice, Tush, Harper’s Bazaar and Elle.

4. Kate Dillon

Ms. Dillon’s schoolmates dubbed her “Overweight Kate,” and the teasing took its toll. Kate became severely underweight though she won third place in Elite’s Look of the Year contest, earning the then-17-year-old a $75,000 contract. Kate’s malnourished and two-cigarette-pack-a-day lifestyle eventually made her fed up with modeling. She quit the business and moved back into her parent’s house. At the suggestion of a friend, Kate returned to modeling after a short break – this time as a plus-size model. She’s enjoyed modeling more ever since.

5. Gitte Lill

In addition to plus-size modeling, Gitte is also a dancer. The Norway-born beauty is backed by the Ford agency.

6. Natalie Laughlin

W magazine has hailed her as one of “the brightest stars,” and The Wall Street Journal writes that “people in the industry say the brown-eyed, 5-foot-9 model, size 12-to-14, is at the top of her game.” I can’t disagree. Natalie was featured as Liz Claiborne’s “Elizabeth” girl, and she’s earned the title of “Cindy Crawford of plus-size models” by some industry folks.

7. Alyona Osmanova

Alyona didn’t start out as a plus-size, but she was moved into the category. She’s earned a long list of career achievements, including walking for Marc Jacobs, Prada, Chanel and Givenchy. Alyona’s been featured in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Dazed & Confused and a host of other top-tier magazines.

Other artists smashing through the limits of decorum this month are Jack White and Alison Mosshart’s band The Dead Weather, who whip up a musical storm while on tour in New Orleans; Harmony Korine’s wife Rachel Korine, who undergoes a transformation from pretty young woman to the degraded, crotch-thrusting OAP who steals the show in her husband’s VHS offering Trash Humpers; and Italian director Lucio Fulci, the “torture porn pioneer” responsible for the grisly Zombie Flesh Eaters.

This issue goes on sale June 17th.

MIA gets her Gangalang on for Dazed & Confused. We love the fashion choices for the Sri Lankan gem.  The issue hits newsstands on June 17th.

Controversial electro-noise mavericks Crystal Castles, take the cover of the June issue of Dazed & Confused, shot in a series of intimate portraits at their Toronto home by Ari Marcopoulos. Dazed reports from the frontline of their chaotic secret warm-up show, and gets the inside story on the making of their amazing second album. The Dazed June issue with Crystal Castles is on sale Thursday 13 May. Check out DazedDigital for more info.

The June issue of Dazed & Confused brings us into the Toronto home of Crystal Castles, the “It” synth-band of the moment. My Fashion Life: This morning you woke up

Susie Bubble: And had a very very strong leaning towards frayed denim. Cheesy frayed denim to be precise.

MFL: How would you describe your style?

SB: Eclectic and ever-evolving.

MFL: What does a normal working day for you consist of?

SB: Staring at the screen for hours on end pondering the meaning of various URL’s.

MFL: What other fashion blogs would you recommed?

SB: Luxirare.com,Diane Pernet’s blog,Gnarlitude,Foxyman,Style Lines,Tavi… the list goes on…

MFL: Fashion tip for the season?

SB: Replace the fashion tips with PG-Tips?

MFL: What’s your super power?

SB: The ability to drink copious amounts of tea…

MFL: What’s your party trick?

SB: Turning up overdressed. Everytime.

MFL: Who or what has been your greatest fashion influence?

SB: The movements of the sun and whether it decides to show its face…

MFL: If you owned a shop, what would it be called?

SB:Verbal Diarrhea

MFL: If you could be dressed by anyone, who would it be and what would you have them put you in?

SB: Surely if they were dressing me, they would be in charge of what to put me in? I’ll leave the task in the hands of Camille Bidault Waddington who has exceedingly good taste…

MFL: Who are your favourite emerging designers and what is it that you love about them?

SB: Louise Gray’s unexpected mix of different elements, Sandra Backlund’s immense sense of shape, Mary Katrantzou’s unique stance on prints, and Jeremy Laing’s stealthy cool.

MFL: What item of clothing (if any) do you wish that more of us wore?

SB: Hats.

MFL: With blogs and ezines becoming increasing popular, do you think print magazines have a future?

SB: Yes of course – I’ll still be buying them!

MFL: Finally, what’s the one question you wish people asked you but you’ve never had the opportunity to answer? (And what is the answer?)

SB: Do you have wrinkly elbows? Yes…they’re like walnuts.

If you aren’t already familiar with his stuff, head immediately over to Rankin’s site.  You’re bound to find something you recognize (like the shot from Mary Kate and Ashley’s Influence  cover), and be unbelievably impressed with his extensive portfolio.  Rankin co-launched Dazed & Confused in ’91 with his business partner, Jefferson Hack, and has continued to shake up the photo world ever since.  He’s done dozens of famous ad campaigns (from Nike, to Dove, to Jameson), and shot just about every celebrity (Madonna, Heidi Klum, The Rolling Stones, Kate Moss…), but I was impressed the most by his beauty portfolio, a series of creative shots, crazy makeup , and perfect lighting.  Rankin is best known for his intimacy with his subjects, and these up close and personal shots display just that.

Dazed & Confuzed had an amazing spread on their website/magazine that was 100% inspired by Christian Bale and American Psycho. The shoot is supposed to embody the modern day version of the movie, and it’s pretty badass if you ask me. I wish they would have done something with the ATM and the cat though. Which buy the way, am I the only one who thinks that will happen with any of those sketchy ATM’s that just sit in the middle of the street in NYC?

Great, eye-catching image — a little Rocky Horror Picture Show, a little Pop Art.

This spread is pretty rad. Who wouldn’t want to shoot high fashion at the world famous Stonehenge? I adore the black and white theme with two splashes of harsh, menacing colored photos. The garments look great on model Kate Somers; I dig her abrasive glances and stony expressions. The photograph of her wearing a mask while holding onto a tree branch is mind-blowing- whose legs are that long, seriously? The snow looks gorgeous as well, and I ALWAYS hate snow. Christmas in Wiltshire next year folks?

Carlotta Manaigo’s spread “Mutate” in the March 2009 issue of Dazed & Confused features Jakob Wiechmann blending in with curtains and decor.  There’s some great drapery and lighting, and Jakob’s face is mutable enough to work with all the looks.

20 years after Gianni Versace launched the Versus diffusion line – and five years after the last collection – Donatella Versace has revived the label.

At a presentation in Milan this Sunday, Donatella and collaborator Christopher Kane debuted accessories for Fall/Winter 2009.

Dazed & Confused reported that this year’s line “draws direct inspiration from the back catalog of Versus and includes super high black platform heels with bold diamond detailing, black geometric calfskin bags, chunky bejeweled Chelsea boots and opulent crystal jewelry.” So it seems to be a mix honest to both designer’s styles.

Versus will release men’s and women’s clothing in Spring 2010.

Real-life couple Ash Stymest and Eliza Cummins are the cover babes for the March 2009 issue of Dazed & Confused.

Shot by Mariano Vivanco and styled by Nicola Formichetti, the goth-punk, androgynous shoot is already freaking people out — Ash is only 17, and Eliza shows nipple! Heavens!

“Meet fashion’s boys Who are girls Who like girls to be boys”, the tag line on the March 09 cover of Dazed & Confused, is quite appropriate with model couple Ash and Eliza half-naked and in your face. I love them and I love this photo; it’s wonderfully scandalous rock & roll. Photographer Mariano Vivanco turned it out for the always-edgy D&C. I wonder what brand of underwear that is?

Hussein Chalayan always plays with my mind through design. I love the overly conceptual feel of this clothing, and his spring 09 collection is no different. His amazing garments are shown off in the most ethereal way with a spread in the latest issue of Dazed & Confused. Shot by Mel Bles, these photos capture the dream-like, outer-worldly experience Chalayan’s spring 09 collection brings to mind.
