Denim - Denim can be hot and heavy, especially when wearing a longer pair. Cotton jeans are the best for breathability, but pairs with stretch will move with your body. Chrissy suggests either a  98% cotton/2% lycra or 96 % cotton/4% Lycra combination. The below pairs from Ksubi, J-Brand and AllSaints are great options.

Tees and Tanks - Breezy cuts made with soft fabrics are what to look for here. Chrissy suggests Pima and Supima cotton and blends with polyester so clothing retains its shape, even through inevitable summer sweating. Rayon is another great fabric to keep in mind as it drapes well and keeps its shape when wet. The tops below from Topshop, Vince and Erin Kleinberg look hot and will keep you cool.

Dresses - It’s difficult to go wrong with dresses in the summer, as most styles will help you beat the heat. But for that extra chill factor, Chrissy suggests cotton for every day, natural silk for more formal occasions and spandex blends for a body-conscious look. You won’t go naked with the below from Milly, Roberto Cavalli and Etro.

The denim collection boasts every type of jean — skinny, boyfriend, drop crotch, straight leg — each treated with a burst of cosmetics  for a signature spin.  Whether it be a splash of purple eyeshadow on the butt or bursts of pink blusher throughout the thighs, the collection brought a bright, uplifting feeling into your Spring denim selection.

My personal favorite were the destroyed white skinny, which didn’t have much stretch but fit very true to size. A runner up were the super skinny stretch teal jeans, which were a powdery light color that once painted on your body, were surprisingly flattering.

Jessy, our fabulous office assistant, fooled around with a floor length denim skirt. Keeping with the drawn out proportions, this angle hanging sweater falls in line, oversized.  Disclaimer: If not styled correctly, the long jean skirt could turn 90′s Daria right quick. I have faith you can avoid that mistake and make it work now.

I played around with a pair of ever so slightly khaki-white ankle touching skinnies. I rolled them up touch for good measure to show off my old man gold toe socks sticking out of my suede olive platforms. The top of the pants hit right at my belly button, making it a solid height for a cropped shirt. A sheer button up over a velvet bandeau makes these light pants feel dark.

I also tried out their standard jeans – not pictured here, because they’re standard jeans, and you know how they should look. The fit and feel, however, are anything but standard. Years and years of experience in denim mean mastery. They have the kind of stretch that you love your jeggings for, but they are true denim. They fit snug, but didn’t leave any muffin or pastry looking hiplines. I could do squats, kicks, lunges with ease. Sam Lim (our editor) told me I looked really skinny; I blushed a little, but had to agree. It’s one baddd Mother. And my butt looked great.

These are perfect for the girl on the go, or a fashionista in need of a quick wardrobe change, aid in packing light, or an easy way of getting out of doing laundry for the week…these jeans go from day to night to day again in one quick zip. Personal Confession: I find myself flummoxed by many personal style blogs…

I have an old school brain where my fashion focus is more about YOU than ME... most of my career spent behind the scenes to create a gorgeous end-product rather than being front and center in a model posing way.

Without naming names in the gargantuan genre of personal style blogs, for me, some are absolutely over-rated, others embarrassing, most are mundane, many are sweet, and few simply stand out on their own merit. The personal style blogs that do it well, do very well.

With the tag line stating that ” All AssesAre Not Created Equal” Levi’s launched the Curve ID denim for women in New York last night . The denim offers to remediate to some common fit issues like gaping waistlines , unflattering too tight waists ,curvy to straighter hips. The idea is “Jeans for All” in these three fits: Slight Curve, Demi Curve and the Bold Curve. To find the right fit each shopperis measured to asses their waist to hip ratio, addressing shape more than size.

We applaud the idea of addressing the variety however, as you will see in the event images we had hoped the marketing or at least the demonstration would have gone “all the way” in showing more visible variety in body shapes , and frankly ethnicity ( why not?).We’re suckers for out- of- the box, so ads that would shake up some body/ethnic stereotypes would be fab cause truly we ‘ve heard them all.The models you will see in the event images are gorgeous however, as an observer you have to really zone in on each one to really see their curve differences .

On the bright side, most of the wide variety of event attendees were able to find a pair that fits!The kings of denim might be on to something big…Take a closer look on the next page , courtesy of the amazing William Yan.

4. How does your buying process look like?

I buy from established California designers mostly in Los Angeles. I bring in new merchandise each month and select the best pieces offered for each delivery carrying and assortment of tops, dresses and denim.

5. Is Fashionistette a reflection of your personal style?

Yes, the merchandise I carry is a reflection of my personal style. It’s fashionable, feminine and fun. The fabric and tailoring are high quality with unique details and fabrics.

6. If you had to wear one thing for the rest of your life what would that be?

Since Ale has been staying just for a few days, we had to see as much as we could, so even if we woke up with the worst weather ever (and with the worst cold and cough), we decided to go up on the Eureka building, which is the highest in Melbourne. It’s all made of glass, therefore it allows you to see the city from any perspective…it’s amazing!
While we were up there it started raining (nice), but after a while the sun shined again!
Once we got down we had a quick muffin (great thing to start a new day) and we walked to Fitzroy, which is a very hip, cool, alternative area of Melbourne. (There I found in a vintage shop an amazing old Levi’s denim jacket that I can’t wait to show you!) Before getting in Fitzroy we stopped in this beautiful park you can see in the last pics: how nice is that?

It has been a lovely day and even if now I’m in bed sick, it was worth it…

Please welcome guest contributor, stylist Steffany Allen! After attending the MTV TJ Challenge, she recaps her experiences of the evening’s event!

With three days to plan and 30 minutes to execute, the final challenge for the MTV Twitter Jockey involved one of the plus size community’s own Gabi, of Young, Fat, and Fabulous.

I met @gabifresh, creator of the blog Young Fat and Fabulous and the MTV crew on the Brooklyn Bridge for the MTV TJ (Twitter Jockey) Meet Up challenge!  There are now 5 finalists in the competition and their challenge was to get as many people as possible to meet in one location for an event they were hosting.  Gabi’s Meet UP location was the iconic Brooklyn Bridge for a Plus Size fashion show!  Can you imagine!?  Well it was fabulous!!

Meeting Gabi was a true delight.  She was all smiles as she greeted fans that came out in support of her becoming the first MTV-TJ.  All the fans (including myself) had hearts drawn on their hands in solidarity for Gabi.  With the beautiful Brooklyn skyline in the background, the evening sun and the warm summer breeze (which got strong at times), the vibe was set for a hot Plus Size Fashion Show.

We cheered on as the models strutted their stuff down the runway in clothing from Torrid.  There were casual dresses, fun party tops, bustiers, and jeans.  The looks were easy, casual, fun, and perfect for a nice summer evening!  Some of the featured models were Mia Amber, my fave Plus model sisters, Stacey and Shannon Hiett, Jeannie Ferguson, Allison McGevna, Danielle Jackson and Christina Mendez.  One of my cool moments was when I loaned my personal shoes to Christina so she could walk the runway!! That was kind of FAB!

After the show, the attention was turned on to the fans for a best dressed contest!  Several ladies from the crowd hit the runway in their best looks for a prize of $100 cash! All the looks were on point, but there could only be one winner, and that was (my friend) Michelle Wells!!  She kept it chic and simple with a basic white tank t-shirt, denim vest, black skirt, and animal print flats.  Classic never fails!

As the sun was going down and the networking buzzed on, Gabi took pictures and thanked her fans for showing up in support.  I hope @gabifresh wins the position of MTV-TJ and represents strong for the curvy girls.  We will find out Sunday night at 9pm on MTV when they announce the winner.

Prints are everywhere. From London to Paris and Florence to New York, prints are officially an integral part of the fashion vocabulary. Flare jeans are back in a big way for fall. And from the looks of our Facebook page, people have some strong feelings on the issue. What’s your stance? Will you be ignoring the trend and sticking with your skinny jeans and denim leggings, or embracing it wholeheartedly?

All you bohemian types seem to have an inherent affinity for flares and bell-bottoms (my most boho friendhas two spare pairs of the J Brand Lovestory stashed away, in case it’s discontinued). And though it’s a natural with earthy-chic pieces like the updated clog, the flare doesn’t have to be hippie. Pay tribute to sophisticated ’70s fashion icons by pairing a restrained flare (Paige Denim and 7 For All Mankind do great ones) with a silk Equipment button-down and cognac accessories, or try them in white denim for a Carolyn Bessette-on-the-Italian-Riviera look. It was a little chilly today so I paired a dove gray knit Zara dress with a drop-waist with an H&M cropped denim jacket and a vintage scarf. As for accessories, I donned by favorite Ray Ban Club Masters as well as a pair of ballet loafers from Urban Outfitters that I wear to death. I also decided to try out my MAC lip stick in “Party Line” that I have owned for awhile though never wear. I think it may just be my signature shade for autumn!

Cheap Monday Autumn/winter 2010

Sweden’s skinny jeans champion, Cheap Monday, present their autumn/winter, somewhat shady, catalogue: “The AW 2010 collection gives an apocalyptic impression but with a sense of hope for the future; holes are mended and scarring is used as decoration. Razorblade slashes are repaired on both denim and jersey; patches are used together with spray paint and coatings in rough detailing. A rawness and nomadicity referring to futurism and punk suggests a DIY aesthetic.” Take a look.

REDUX Blue Jeans Carpenter Work Pants

More and more artisanal denim brands are kicking off these days – REDUX Blue Jeans from Italy is the latest to come to our attention, bearing a promising first impression.

Launched by fashion industry veteran Dario Marangon, the new brand is based on Marangon’s passion for men’s denim and the tradition of workwear, and influenced by his well curated archive of rare vintage jeans combined with original dead stock and other garments, accessories, books and research collected over the years.

The idea of the REDUX project arose from the need to perpetuate the unique characteristics of jeans from the material to the manufacture. A limited production of handmade blue jeans, using Okayama mills narrow selvage denim fabric, the special nature of the project lies in the high quality and the artistic integrity of its elements with a commitment to the past. We’ll be sure to add REDUX to our brands-to-follow list – you should as well.

I think I have multiple personality disorder. Currently I’m obsessed (on one hand) with everything Texas Cowboy giving off that carefree all-american rugged ranger attitude. I crave light denims, cowboy hats, harness boots, and ofcourse destroyed cutoffs. But then I’m also in love with all items that channel Pocahantas, and exude a more spiritual feel – fringe suede bags, feather accessories, bright earthy prints, and ofcourse, tie dye. Thus I was torn between making a Wild Wild West collage and a Neon Indian one.

Bah! But why should I choose? So I combined both of them into one and I think they compliment eachother very nicely. Tis the summmer to mix worn denim jackets with a tribal print dress and a studded fringe cross-body. Or why not don a tie dye dress with a pair of embellished cowboy boots? I think doing a DIY tie dye project is going to be on the top of my list when I get back to the US.
