The Fall Flare: What’s Your Stance?

Flare jeans are back in a big way for fall. And from the looks of our Facebook page, people have some strong feelings on the issue. What’s your stance? Will you be ignoring the trend and sticking with your skinny jeans and denim leggings, or embracing it wholeheartedly?

All you bohemian types seem to have an inherent affinity for flares and bell-bottoms (my most boho friendhas two spare pairs of the J Brand Lovestory stashed away, in case it’s discontinued). And though it’s a natural with earthy-chic pieces like the updated clog, the flare doesn’t have to be hippie. Pay tribute to sophisticated ’70s fashion icons by pairing a restrained flare (Paige Denim and 7 For All Mankind do great ones) with a silk Equipment button-down and cognac accessories, or try them in white denim for a Carolyn Bessette-on-the-Italian-Riviera look. (Need further proof the flare doesn’t have to feel like a castoff from Nicole Richie’s closet, circa 2006? See this recent street snap of her majesty Carine Roitfeld.)

After some window shopping, a lovely Italian dinner and a bit of dessert, I headed out into the neighborhood to walk my dogs. My old lady, as I prefer to call her, made the perfect fashion accessory (but I refuse to dress her up, I think that’s horrible! However, she has a green cable-knit cardigan for cold winter days!). I actually have another dog as well, so I suppose I picked a favorite today! (sorry, Harley!)

It was a little chilly today so I paired a dove gray knit Zara dress with a drop-waist with an H&M cropped denim jacket and a vintage scarf. As for accessories, I donned by favorite Ray Ban Club Masters as well as a pair of ballet loafers from Urban Outfitters that I wear to death. I also decided to try out my MAC lip stick in “Party Line” that I have owned for awhile though never wear. I think it may just be my signature shade for autumn!

Sweden’s skinny jeans champion, Cheap Monday, present their autumn/winter, somewhat shady, catalogue: “The AW 2010 collection gives an apocalyptic impression but with a sense of hope for the future; holes are mended and scarring is used as decoration. Razorblade slashes are repaired on both denim and jersey; patches are used together with spray paint and coatings in rough detailing. A rawness and nomadicity referring to futurism and punk suggests a DIY aesthetic.” Take a look.

Brand New | REDUX Blue Jeans

More and more artisanal denim brands are kicking off these days – REDUX Blue Jeans from Italy is the latest to come to our attention, bearing a promising first impression.

Launched by fashion industry veteran Dario Marangon, the new brand is based on Marangon’s passion for men’s denim and the tradition of workwear, and influenced by his well curated archive of rare vintage jeans combined with original dead stock and other garments, accessories, books and research collected over the years.

The idea of the REDUX project arose from the need to perpetuate the unique characteristics of jeans from the material to the manufacture. A limited production of handmade blue jeans, using Okayama mills narrow selvage denim fabric, the special nature of the project lies in the high quality and the artistic integrity of its elements with a commitment to the past. We’ll be sure to add REDUX to our brands-to-follow list – you should as well.

Anna Kendrick is a pretty young thing who tested her red carpet chops last awards season when she was nominated for everything from a Teen Choice Award to an Oscar. She clearly picked up some tips along the way, because she showed up at the premiere of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World this week in this very bold, but very chic pairing of a blue leopard strapless mini and canary yellow pumps.
