William Okpo is the brainchild of sisters Lizzy and Darlene Okpo for the contemporary, confident woman. Named as an ode to their father whose killer style has always been an inspiration to them, the Okpo sisters have garnered a lot of attention in the past year. The brand is sold at Opening Ceremony in NY and LA; they have become street style stars for their amazing wardrobe, accessories and long locks; and they recently teamed with Brook&Lyn to create a cape and pouch. We caught up with the Brooklyn-based design duo to find out what it’s like working with a family member, their current muse and guilty pleasures.

What inspired you to become designers?

Like most young people who couldn’t afford the latest and the greatest, we found a way to make our own out of whatever was available to us. From there, we felt a constant need to create what we didn’t see readily available.

What is it like working with your sister?

It’s a blessing. Everyone should work with their sister. It’s definitely a new relationship you have to adapt to, of course. We get to know a different side of each other, the business side. The best thing about it is we act as a strong force because we clearly understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Most importantly, there are never any hard feelings.

Who is your muse at the moment?

All the young people putting their right foot forward and following their hearts. We need more leaders and innovators in this world. We’ve been noticing more and more young people taking advantage of this creative movement happening.

Lady Gaga is moving on to her next creative endeavor: an intern for fashion’s favorite milliner, Phillip Treacy. For those of you who may not have the pleasure of knowing who Treacy is, he is the designer responsible for some of the world’s most iconic headwear (think Princess Beatrice‘s wildly popular fascinator, Carrie Bradshaw’s “something blue” feathered topper in the Sex & The City wedding, and many a piece for the late Alexander McQueen ). Hats off to Mother Monster (pun completely intended) for humbly starting at the bottom of the millinery, we can’t wait to see what type of tops she comes up with. Click through for a gallery of some of our favorite Treacy pieces.

Amidst an indoor midsummer’s picnic with vegetarian burgers and dogs, cotton candy and a doo wop quartet, Liv Tyler hosted a party for her good friend Stella McCartney in celebration of her new shop opened within Saks Fifth Avenue. The star of the party was certainly Stella McCartney – her full Fall 2011 collection lined the store in Saks, giving us a chance to feast our eyes and hands on the oversized blazers and dropped shoulders sidling body con dresses. The chest of kid Stella clothes was pretty freaking adorable, too. And 10% of proceeds from her sales last night went to The Naked Heart Foundation.

I had the honor of meeting Stella McCartney before the event really started – the Liv of the party hadn’t arrived yet. Determined to talk to her, I persisted past the determinedly protective security PR and introduced myself. Nerves almost got the better of me as I toldher that while I’m a Fashion Editor, I’m also a designer and born Beatles fan. Her smile proved she is a kind, beautiful soul. Conversation ebbed into how when she first began, there was much hoopla surrounding her choice to be completely animal and eco friendly. It was such a bizarre choice 10 years ago. Now, designers are faced with the issue of how to make eco-friendliness a non-issue by just making it an innate part of the process and letting the clothing speak for itself. After a minute’s time talking on sustainability with Stella McCartney, she got whisked away to retrieve Liv Tyler. Don’t fret – that was not the last she saw of me.

I thus busied myself with the touch of her squeezably soft wools, the gold wovens, and the cucumber cocktails until their return.

I eventually caught up with Liv Tyler and chatted up what we’re feeling in fashion right now, and of course about Stella. By the way, she is even more elegantly stunning in person than in any pictures or movies.

What trends are you loving this season?

“I would say I’m very not hip to knowing what’s in because I only follow my heart, what I like. I don’t keep up with [magazines]. I read magazines when I can, and I see pieces when I walk by them in a store. I have more of a specific eye when it comes to [shopping]. Like, I could come to this place and in about 4 minutes I could say exactly what I want and how I would put it together.”

What is your heart saying for fashion right now, within yourself?

“I’m really happy to be in this [Stella McCartney] dress. I feel like a fem-bot. Everything’s in place. I’m really happy in it right now. Too bad I can only wear it once because I had my picture taken in it about 300 times.”

I think we all feel that way with Facebook. That’s why I like separates.

“I love separates. I live in Wolford tights and Lanvin flats. And then whatever else I can come up with. I really love shorts and rompers, but with tights. Little skirts and blouses and t-shirts. I definitely like separates right now.”

How much Stella do you think you have in your closet?

“Not a crazy amount, but the pieces last forever. They don’t go away. I have a couple of jackets that I’ve had for 6 years. I have a suit from when she was at Chloé. They’re so well made and so chic and powerful that they transcend trends… I always feel like it’s the grownup in me. I have all these different sections of my closet. The one section where most of my Stella things are, is for when I have a meeting, or when I want to feel like a woman.”

Now there’s no way I would have left without saying so long to Stella. And I wanted to get a quote for my all my Indies. At the end of a press line longer than the train on André Leon Talley‘s Met Gala gown, I squeezed in, nearly glamouring the PR that just kicked three girls off the line ahead of me, and got to ask one question. Here goes:

I was just writing today about how important the oversized blazer is.

“Oh, cool!”

I wanted to know how you came up with it. What’s your reasoning behind it?

“I guess I’m always borrowing my boyfriend’s jackets, and it’s… my husband, sorry! It just gives a bit more attitude.”

So maybe I made her a little tongue tied, too? Regardless, Stella McCartney is a graceful and talented woman who has not only come from great legacy, but is creating her own.

Ha, only in our wildest fashion fantasies. No no, Miuccia Prada has not taken the dive down to Topshop or Aldo for any true collaborations, but her striped soled espadrilles have proven highly inspirational to the many factory farmed designers out there.

Of course the true Prada shoe here is striped from ankle to toe, and the sole has sneaker traction. These shoes are built to last and born to run, and thus may set you back around $700, if you can find them.

Topshop stripes the sole and weaves the wedge for their Prada iteration. Though not available online yet – they’re keeping us waiting on the good stuff – they’ll hit at $135.

Meanwhile, these yellow Aldo lookalikes run $100, and will undoubtably feel like Aldo’s. Though to be honest, I’m digging the Limoncello sole stripe fused with the light brown leather of the sandal.

Desire though you may, if you can’t actually get your toes on a pair of Prada‘s, at least there are choices out there for us that stem from Miuccia’s inspirations. Until we’re raking in the big bucks and can rest our tootsies in any wedge we damn please, let’s take a moment to appreciate where our new favorite mass market shoes truly come from.

Tucked away on the north end of Mulberry Street, just above Houston, lives a petite boutique lined with the freshest names in design. Début is sparsely arranged to feel like a gallery, built to give each designer a proper artist’s display. Storeowner Lisa Weiss frequently hears from new customers, I’ve passed by it so many times and just never came in! I wasn’t entirely sure it was a store. Let her hear that no more. This incredible little-known and selectively merchandised store sparked my desire to explore the best boutiques in New York, and take you shopping with me. Piece by piece. Designer by designer. Through five original looks. One look each day. Every week. From now on. This is the Début of Boutique Critique.

Like what you see? Shop at Début and mention FashionIndie to get 10% off!

LOOK ONE: Swim Slung Salsa

The Skirt: Heikki Salonen, $585

Look closely. This is not just a dress. In fact, it’s no dress at all, unless you were to pull that skirt up above the bosom and belt it, á la yesteryear’s silhouette. This swingy, deep pocketed, ruffled and raw chiffon hemmed skirt is by Finish-born, London-shown designer Heikki Salonen. Though the skirt looked familiarly pleasing at the waist, I’ve slung it fresh at my very low hip, stretching the length to ankle height.

The Top: Lisa Marie Fernandez, $385

The top is also, in fact, no top at all. It is a bathing suit by Lisa Marie Fernandez. Made of neoprene. The shape recalls forties swimwear while the material calls more for a surf instructor and/or scuba gear. Wear it to swim, wear it to dinner. If you were Gaga, you’d wear it alone to both.

The Necklace: Orly Genger by Jaclyn Mayer, $325

The black and white speckled neon rope tied necklace topped the texture twist. This innovative jewelry from Orly Genger by Jaclyn Mayer is made of entirely hand woven climbing ropes; the knotting techniques are stemmed from those used in artist Orly Genger’s sculptures. The jewelry is a collaborative effort of the two.

Vivienne Westwood‘s influential existence in the realm of fashion evolved through its powerful early stages between 1980-89. The Museum at FIT has gathered photos, press and groundbreaking garments into an exhibit that opened yesterday that demonstrates her profound effect on the punk revolution, and how she garnered international interest for the London fashion scene. She created by the philosophy, not of change, but rather surprisingly of tradition. It is how she manipulated past traditions to fit the changing times that resonated with so many.

“If you look at any movement… it’s people rejecting what’s just behind them and pulling something out of the past.” – Vivienne Westwood, 1986

At the beginning of her journey into the fashion world, Westwood opened a store with design and business partner, artist Malcom McLaren. Through many incarnations of names, a store called World’s End (with a 13 hour backwards moving clock over the doorway) became the breeding ground for their experiments of unisex clothing inspired by 18th-century men’s undergarments, swashbuckling Pirate-wear and other historically sound yet new-age garb. The photo below was taken in the store, Vivienne on the bottom left, Malcom on the right.

McLaren and Westwood took the anti-establishment of World’s End to the runway. The first look below is a unisex tunic and pants ensemble, which was part of the Pirates collection in 1981. The next is made of sweatshirt fleece supplemented with blouse and baby blanket material. The third look from the Buffalo collection of ’82 is an antique-looking brown satin bra top with a full cotton skirt; the show note went to the tune of Take your mother’s bra and put it over a sweater with a muddy face. The fourth look on the right is a pair of distressed pants suspended by springs “to show the movement”.

The Buffalo collection:

The influence of Vivienne Westwood and Malcom McLaren moved beyond the streets and runways of London and far past the doors of World’s End when musicians got involved. In fact, the Sex Pistols wore their designs back when their brand was still called “Let It Rock”. With the advent of MTV, celebrity fans of World’s End like Boy George and Adam and the Ants became fashion icons before the world on television, in Westwood.

Vivienne Westwood drew great influence from philosopher Bertrand Russell. It is his quote on her shirt, “Orthodoxy is the Grave of Intelligence.”

With that, in 1984 when she and McLaren parted ways due to artistic differences, she went against the grain of the eighties. Where most of the industry was creating silhouettes of power shoulders and boxy suits, she drew from the Victorian era and developed the “mini crini”; a knee length version of the crinoline understructure. She also dipped into the seventies and Japan and pulled out platforms, but gave them a pirouette; the rounded up toe allows for perfect balance on point. Even more radically, she resurrected the corset, bringing it back in a liberating manner for it was no longer required. The quote on this photo reads, “…taking tradition into the future.” – Vivienne Westwood.

Feminizing the Scottish kilt, futurizing the corset and harking menswear back to medieval times, Vivienne Westwood in the late eighties was well on her way to stamping her unique print on fashion. She ended the decade with a bang: November ’89 cover of British Vogue.

As an apprentice at his father’s shop, he learned the ins and outs of the trade at an early age. With Oak Street, George’s goal is to honor the craft of fine shoe making while continuing the family trade and traditions passed on to him by his father. Designed in Chicago, handmade in the US(Maine to be exact) by craftsman with over twenty years experience, the Oak Street line is made exclusively with Horween leathers(a Chicago institution, founded 1905) including their Chromexcel(which incidentally, smells amazing right out of the box). Each pair is designed and manufactured with the utmost attention to detail, fit, construction and durability. The inaugural line is a straight forward selection of the classic and iconic shoes you want on your feet from a blucher to a boat shoe to a penny loafer to a chukka to both a hunt and work boot to my personal favorite, the trail oxford.

The Designer Scouts Sky Swap Market.

Stadtbad Oderberger. Berlin.

Oh those cute bar tenders made a great ‘sky passion’ cocktail!!

You would think then one would pick up on who sponsered the event, but was rather embarrassingly caught out telling someone the next day that it was hosted by Absolut Vodka….?!?! Sorry Sky Vodka you are so much better…

Fabulous people looking fabulous, hosted in an fabulous old building (an old bathhouse) all very fabulous really!!

I have to say I didn’t really do much swapping but those I spoke to got some great bargains- or just had a change of heart and re bought their old stuff back!! Did score a new pair of Juliaandben leopard print tights thanks to iheartberlin’s ‘swap the look of the blogger’…

On an unrelated note my clever friend Claire wrote this hilarious article and now every time I write I’m fearing her reading it and shaking her head… I probably skipped school to hang out at the pool the day we learnt grammar.

Reykjavik EyesOur friends over at Reykjavik Eyes recently sent over a look at their new marketing campaign. According to Designer Gunnar Gunnarsson, the idea behind the campaign was to capture the minimalistic look & strong feel of the collection while adding a more fashion oriented feeling. Check out the new images for the campaign as …

Here is our Q & A post with the fantabulous designers of Alex & Eli. For those of you just tuning in, here is the post we did a little while back. We hope that you guys enjoy, and would definitely like to thank the Alex & Eli team (Anna & Aja) and Sarah Stearns of BWR Public Relations, for their time and support.

Anna Zeman & Aja Singer

Alex & Eli is a label dedicated to creating intelligent suiting for women. With clean, tailored silhouettes and unexpected detailing, these mix & match suits are a fusion of modern elegance with iconic masculinity. This label provides an urban sartorial wardrobe to a woman of confidence and individual beauty. Her look is effortless, yet distinctive. Her look is Alex & Eli.

FH: What are three words that you would use to describe your style and how does that translate into your line?

Anna: Bold. Unique. Detailed. I am never afraid to try new things, and down to the color on my finger nails, to the way I role my jeans, I fall in love with the tiny details. It’s the things that people don’t first recognize that I most enjoy in my personal style, and it’s this focus on details that I think translates well into my design process.

Aja: I would say my style is somewhere between feminine, downtown, and classic depending on my mood. These are all the elements I consider and incorporate into everything I create.

FH: How hard was it to start your own business, and was it more or less difficult than you dreamed?

Anna: Starting a business was not the hard part, creating a company was something I always knew I was going to do…the difficult part was found in taking all of our creative ideas and curtailing them into something focused, and developed from a business perspective. When you have your own company, you are continually forced to wear and share many different hats; it’s challenging, but very thrilling at the same time.

Aja: I was definitely expecting it to be difficult to start a label but had no idea the extent of troubleshooting and management that would be involved. There is a very romantic idea around being a designer but the reality is that, while you do get to be creative and design at times, you are also running a business.

FH: Outside of fashion, do you have any other creative hobbies or skills, and how does that influence your work?

Anna: I played the classical piano for 13 years, so music is a very important part of who I am as a designer. I really look to music as a way to inspire myself for a new collection; it really is a very important aspect in how my emotions and thought processes come together creatively. As a hobby, I also really enjoy writing, as well as typography and graphic design; these things come in handy on a daily basis in my work.

Aja: Outside of fashion, I am interested mostly in music and photography, both of which greatly influence my work down to color, details, and proportion.

FH: At this particular moment, what is your favorite word, food, and designer?

Anna: Kismet. Oysters. Celine.

Aja: Right now, here are my favorites: Word: Toque, Food: Lobster rolls, and Designer: Nicolas Ghesquiere.

After a successful career working under Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein, John Varvatos launched his eponymous menswear label 10 years ago this fall, adding a rock and roll attitude and masculine edge to the mix. Today the designer, who originally hails from Detroit, is widely regarded as America’s finest when it comes to dressing men. From tailored suits, eyewear, fragrance, and a wildly successful collaboration with Converse to the new accessory line of bags, belts, and small leather goods, John Varvatos has become the go-to brand for guys who like to keep things simple and look good.

VN: How do you feel when you think about your 10 year anniversary?
JV: I can’t believe an entire decade has passed! Looking back, I am filled with nostalgia over those beginning years, with a small staff and nothing but our sheer will and dedication pushing us forward. Today, I am so proud of how our brand has evolved and found its unique voice in this industry. I enter the next 10 years with a continued passion and enthusiasm for the experiences that lie ahead.

VN: Has the brand exceeded your expectations?
JV: There are so many things. When I started this brand, I was coming from years of experience at two major American fashion houses, Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein. I had learned a tremendous amount there and was ready to say something new, in my own voice. I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t believe in the success that was to come; I just don’t think things are ever how you imagine them. I have met so many amazing people along the way and built relationships with musicians, artists, photographers, and other designers. I’ve traveled the world. I have a team of designers who share my creative vision and enthusiasm. I am doing what I love, which most people can’t say. So for that I am pleasantly surprised and extremely grateful.

VN: Why do you think you’ve had such success not only commercially, but with the CFDA and fashion editors?
JV: Success is a funny thing. It means different things to different people. For me, I am always pleased when people connect to our brand. It means we are executing in a manner that speaks to a wide variety of businesses.

VN: How does music continue to influence your collections?
JV: Music has always been a dominant force in my life. As a young kid, it was a way for me to escape everyday life. Today, it’s a source of expression. I enjoy looking at old photos of some of my favorite rock icons, but also get inspired from the younger bands that are coming up and really creating their own style, their own image.

VN: Your ads have featured the likes of ZZ Top, Franz Ferdinand, and Chris Cornell. How do you go about selecting who is featured?
JV: It depends on the campaign. We always look for artists who are ground breaking in their genre and have a bit of bad boy in them. At times, we have approached an artist I’m interested in and other times we have been approached. Sometimes there is already a relationship between us, and so it just makes sense to work together.

VN: How do you continue to find new inspiration year after year?
JV: The great thing about living in New York is the constant change of things. It inspires me to keep moving, push forward, question ideas. I have a heavy travel schedule so being in a new environment always gives me another perspective to see things from.

VN: Who are your style icons and why?
JV: It’s always been Steve McQueen. He somehow mastered the effortless of being cool.

VN: Where do you want to go in the next 10 years?
JV: The opportunities are endless and I am interested in exploring as many avenues as I can. Other than that, I want to continue to grow the brand authentically.

VN: Who are your favorite singers/bands at the moment?
JV: Alejandro Escovedo, Robert Plant, Jim Jones Revue, Miles Davis, Iggy & The Stooges.

VN: What can we expect for fall/winter?
JV: Light pieces that have a soft, worn-in touch to them; clothing that is subtly luxurious as it is easy to layer and adapt to one’s own personality. Shades of gray: slate, concrete, pearl wine reds, purples, steel blues and black.

I am not going to go in to a lengthy discourse regarding Haute Couture Designer Bernard Perris. I knew him well. I was introduced to him by Marie José Eymer Jalou the Editor in Chief of L’Officiel magazine back in the late 80′s, just before he was hired by Jean-Louis Scherrer as head designer of his Couture House. I will say this
however; he was one of the kindest and most compassionate individuals
I had ever met in THIS BIZ called FASHION. Now to any of you who
knew him, you will understand immediately what I mean and how rare
those virtues are in our BIZ.

Working with him was a rare pleasure. He was not afraid to being open to the creative possibilities proposed to him, even to those that may have been alien to his aesthetic culture. That in itself took a lot
of courage and was a sign of an artist who was comfortable with who he
was. Bernard felt secure in exploring creative concepts that were
outside of his familiar territory. He was a highly respected Haute
Couture designer that left his indelible mark on the industry.

My only regret was not taking him up on his frequent invitations to my wife at the time and I to visit

him in the south of France.

Mr.Perris…Rest in Peace.

New York femme fetale meets Parisian chic this holiday season as designer New York designer L'Wren Scott joins forces with Lancome Paris for a holiday color collection. Scott will bring her stunning red carpet sizzlers in the form of makeup for women, a majority of whom cannot afford Scott's four figure creations.

“The first thing I thought of was that I wanted to do my signature red — my bordeaux,” the designer told WWD. “I would like to try to interpret a red lipstick that could be worn from day to night.”

The rouge color can be worn for day or night depending on the stroke in which its applied. Adding gloss to lips after application will also change the depth and shine of the lip color.

The L'Wren Scott for Lancome collection will feather an eyeshadow quad, lipstick, lip gloss, a limited edition Lancôme's volumizing Hypnôse Drama Mascara in shimmery silver-ray and a gray nail color said to be a favorite hue in Scott's red carpet collections. The beauty collection will also come with a black rosette pochette as part of a gift with purchase. Items will be available online and at beauty counters in November and will retail between $14 and $42.

The other day I posted on the fabulous label, Alex & Eli. Well, it just so happens that I got my grubby little hands on their Fall lookbook, and now I’m even more obsessed. The fit, the detailing, the sophistication, and the imagination behind the clothing, are all amazing.

In addition to the amazingness, we’re gonna add a little awesomeness, because we are going to have a Q & A with the designers. Not only are we going to have a Q & A , but they are going to be answering some of your questions. So, while you peruse through the lovely photos below, make sure you’re thinking of some questions, and leave them in the comments section. Don’t forget to look out for the Q & A post and Happy Asking!
