In the post-millennial pop culture landscape, there is one name that stands a stiletto taller than the rest: Beyoncé. From her teenage years as a Child of Destiny to her ascension to full-on divahood, Bey has proven herself the 21st century’s answer to Diana Ross. There are numerous parallels one can make between the two — outdiva-ing their respective girl groups (The Supremes:Destiny’s Child), award-nominated forays into film (1972 Oscar nom for Lady Sings the Blues:2009 Razzies nom for Obsessed) and an immensely successful crossover appeal masterminded by a manipulative father figure (Berry Gordy:Jay-Z). Oh yeah, and they’re both also style icons. Mrs. Carter has paid homage to Ms. Ross many times throughout her career while etching out her own sequined place in fashion. What better way to chart her style evolution than a good, ole-fashioned Videography?

"Work It Out" (2002)

Beyoncé's love for the 70s and giant hair was evident from her first single and video as a solo artist. Channeling her Foxy Cleopatra character from that Citizen Kane of shitty sequels, Austin Powers in Goldmember, Bey sported a sequined shift and her never-again-seen afro.

"Crazy in Love" (2003)

Bey announced her arrival to superstardom with "Crazy in Love"'s thunderous horns and her birth as a fashion icon with a series of outfits -- such as the always appropriate fur coat and a bikini -- as well as some serious posing.

"Me, Myself and I" (2004)

Could always use more Bey in a bob.

"Naughty Girl" (2004)

The song itself features an interpolation of Donna Summer's "Love to Love You Baby" and combined with a very Diana-esque fur shawl and a little nod to Bob Fosse's choreography -- something she would mine time and time again -- Beyoncé was getting in touch with her inner Studio 54 ...by way of the Harlem Renaissance.

"Upgrade U" (2007)

While talking a mean fashion game, Bey dons an even meaner braid.

"Kitty Kat" (2007)

Though the video for "Kitty Kat" was only a minute long and served really as an intro to "Green Light," how the hell can we not talk about this makeup? Following the theme of the song, Beyoncé also wears a leopard-print catsuit. It's called commitment.

"Get Me Bodied" (2007)

An homage to Bob Fosse's Sweet Charity, Bey sports another memorable pony and is joined by former Destiny's Children Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland -- and -- beginning to step out of her sister's ginormous shadow -- Solange as they enter a party the only way acceptable: like a bunch of drag queens.

"Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It" (2008)

The leotard worn 'round the world. Who knew such a simple concept would be the watershed moment in Beyoncé's career? Inspired once again by Fosse -- this time "Mexican Breakfast" -- but with the added touch of a Lorraine Schwartz robotic titanium glove. If Gwen Verdon had had that...let's just say Liza wouldn't be alive today.

"Diva" (2008)

Just in case there were any lingering doubts, Beyoncé is a fucking diva. But for anyone questioning her female hustler status, Bey pulled some diva antics like blowing up a car of mannequins and wearing the hell out of some Gareth Pugh and vintage Thierry Mugler. Sasha Fierce was not playing around.

"Video Phone" (2009)

By this point in her career, Bey had really stepped up her sartorial game, eschewing mom Tina Knowles' House of Dereon creations for haute couture. And I think we all know fellow pop queen Lady Gaga may have had a little something to do with that. The two paired up for "Video Phone" then got all Thelma & Louise for Gaga's similarly-titled "Telephone."

"Why Don't You Love Me" (2010)

Betty Page met Betty Draper in the martini-swilling, chain-smoking, mascara-running incarnation of B.B. Homemaker. Foxy Cleopatra she certainly is not. Shazam!

"Run the World (Girls)" (2011)

Beyoncé's style evolution pretty much peaked when she decided to wear Givenchy Haute Couture while brandishing two jackals on a leash. You don't go up from there, I'm sorry. Alexander McQueen dress and thigh-high boots, a Giuseppe Zanotti harness, an incredible disco-ball of a Gareth Pugh dress and heels, a Jean Paul Gaultier couture gown, an Emilio Pucci dress. In Beyonce's post-Apocalyptic world, haute couture is the only armor you'll need.

Girl groups: They sing. They dance. They look good. They inspire little girls to be a little slutty in their formative years. And some have done it better than others. Their outfit choices were integral with their success. As you’ll see on this list, the best dressed have risen to the top, while the ‘hos and the boring kind of fizzled after the hits. Which songbirds sizzled? And which go No no no no no?

Diana Ross and the girls were impeccable. They are The Beatles of the girl group realm. Simply, and sparkly, the greatest.

And it was GOOD! With each their own personality, we learned that an athlete and a diva can be bff, and that leopard print is wildly acceptable. Girl power.

Music and fashion have always seemed to go hand in hand; one inspiring the other, one amplified by the other, one blatantly stealing from the other, etc. As rock and roll became a lifestyle and MTV invaded the airwaves, the line between music and fashion began to all but disappear. That is in large part thanks to these 10 performances, albums, songs, music videos — moments in pop history — that forever defined and redefined the relationship between music and fashion.

1. Madonna - Blond Ambition Tour (1990)

Always lauded, and at times harshly criticized, for her chameleon-like reinventions, she is nevertheless the artist who most brilliantly illustrates -- and has done the most to encourage -- the symbiotic relationship between music and fashion. Madge reached her sartorial high point during her wildly successful Blond Ambition Tour, featuring costumes by Jean Paul Gaultier who designed the now legendary cone bra.

2. Michael Jackson - "Beat It" music video (1983)

Perhaps the most iconic single article of clothing in pop music history, MJ's red leather jacket was a cultural watershed moment because it became almost synonymous with Thriller, i.e. the biggest album of all time. The ankle-baring trousers -- a nod to Fred Astaire -- white socks and black shoes were also trademarks of the 80s and still loom large over the singer's incredible legacy.

3. The Beatles - The Ed Sullivan Show (1964)

When the Beatles invaded America, they brought along with them enduring and generation-defining trends such as the Beatle boot, collarless suits and the mop top -- not to mention hysteria the likes of which Justin Bieber could only dream.

4. David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust Tour (1973-74)

Without Ziggy, Elton John would never have discovered his love of feathered headdresses, LaBelle wouldn't have strutted around New Orleans in their silver lamé and simply put, there would be no Lady Gaga. A high-concept album with a high-concept look, David Bowie introduced androgyny to the pop culture masses, and decades later his seminal faux rocker is still a fashion favorite.

5. Diana Ross and the Supremes - "Come See About Me" on The Ed Sullivan Show (1964)

Three black girls from Detroit became the epitome of style, grace, beauty and glamor in the midst of social upheaval and racial injustice. Oprah said it best (as she does with everything): it was life-changing.

6. Ramones - Ramones (1976)

While the Beatles inspired bands to dress up, the Ramones' relaxed, almost comalike coolness influenced other bands to keep it simple -- years later their pared down style still feels like quintessential New York. Especially with all the hipsters dragging their Converses, skinny jeans and leather jackets around.

7. George Michael - "Freedom! '90" video (1990)

George Michael's identity crisis led to the zenith of the supermodel explosion. Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington and Tatjana Patitz took the place of the singer -- reluctant to appear in his own video -- and lip-synched their way to iconic status in the clip directed by future friend of Facebook, David Fincher.

8. Nirvana - "Smells Like Teen Spirit" music video (1991)

Marc Jacobs' landmark Grunge collection for Perry Ellis in 1992 may have led to his dismissal, but it also cemented the enormous cultural impact Kurt Cobain and Nirvana had inadvertently etched out for themselves thanks to the success of "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Till this day the sight of plaid inspires those famous first notes and the image of zombie cheerleaders dancing through my head.

9. Run-D.M.C. - "My Adidas" (1986)

Hip hop has long been obsessed with fashion and material goods, but we wouldn't have Kanye "The Louis Vuitton Don" West rapping about haute couture if we didn't have Run D.M.C. extolling the virtues of their shell tops.

10. Lady Gaga - "Bad Romance" music video (2010)

Gaga went from popstar to phenomenon on the heels of her Alexander McQueen armadillo shoes. The video stands as an homage not only to McQueen and his legacy, but to the woman most responsible for Gaga's amazing aptitude for reinvention: Madonna. And she's been paying homage ever since.

Though she ‘s now belting in that great sold out concert hall in the sky, Whitney Houston left behind a catalog of classic tunes that redefined what it means to sang. Visually, her model good looks were a hit with the MTV crowd and as a result Whitney was a huge crossover success — picking up the torch passed to her by godmother and Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin. Throughout the 90s Whitney made a series of comebacks, effectively earning her diva stripes and also some of the biggest hits of her career. Her output was more erratic in the 00s, but she at least had one last hit with the Alicia Keys-penned “Million Dollar Bill.” While we may mourn Whitney Houston’s untimely death, we’ll continue to dance, emphatically point and lip-sync for our lives to her timeless music.

Vogue cover girl Adele wore a simple Armani Privé gown to the 2012 Grammy Awards last night, but paired the frock with an armful of blingtastic trophies. The British songstress swept the competition, taking home all six awards for which she was nominated, including Album of the Year for 21 and Record of the Year for “Rolling in the Deep.” She is only the second female to win six Grammys in one night, the first — of course — being Beyoncé in 2010. Ms. Adkins also debuted the return of her voice after vocal surgery by belting out “in the Deep.” Though this was undeniably Adele’s night, the untimely passing of Whitney Houston cast a large shadow over the show with Jennifer Hudson bringing down the house in a stirring rendition of “I Will Always Love You”

Photo: Los Angeles Times

Hudson’s emotional performance was one of several poignant moments during the telecast, including Alicia Keys and Bonnie Raitt paying tribute to the late Etta James and Amy Winehouse‘s parents accepting their daughter’s trophy with Tony Bennett for their duet, “Body and Soul.”

While Adele had to hitch a U-Haul to her limo to take home her six trophies, the Foo Fighters walked away with five including Best Rock Album for Wasting Light while Kanye West won four, including Best Rap Album for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Best Rap Song for “All of the Lights.”

Last but certainly not least, one Ms. Diana Ross was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award, her first Grammy after 800 years in the business. The supreme diva took to the stage in a cloud of hair at the end of the night to present Adele with her Album of the Year award. And while the show featured countless moments that would best be forgotten — I’m looking at you Katy Perry and Taylor Swift — the symbolic passing of the torch from Whitney to Jennifer and Ms. Ross to Adele made this a night to remember.

- Ebony‘s gotten into the Tumblr game and they’re digging into their archives where gems like this stunning Diana Ross cover from 1970 are just sitting around waiting to be fawned over.
- “You think gay people love Gaga? You should hear when a Robyn song comes on at a gay bar. Then it is fucking over.” Truer words have never been spoken. I’ve burned down several dancefloors to “Dancing On My Own” and have been practicing my backwards roll for “Call Your Girlfriend.” These and other alleged truths, courtesy of “The Secrets Gay Men Don’t Want Straight People to Know.” [Gawker]

- Fellow Greendale fans, rejoice! Community is returning after all. However, a fourth season is still up in the air. Because god knows we need more Whitney in our lives. [E!]

- Justin Bieber got a tattoo of his lord and savior Jesus Christ on his calf. Shortly after getting inked, the Biebs downed a 40, smashed it on the sidewalk, hopped in his low-rider and got high in the parking lot of a Taco Bell with his other cholo buds. [Huff Po]

- Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, née Kate Middleton may be having an 80s-themed 30th birthday party. Meaning Will can once again bust out his sweet dance moves to the delight of sassy black girls everywhere. [The Cut]

- Absolutely Fabulous finally returns this Sunday on the BBC. Get excited, Sweetie Dahling. [Vogue]

- Brad Goreski and Rachel Zoe still aren’t on great terms it seems, despite Brad’s olive branch to the Baby Skyler. Zoe made it perfectly clear, via a retweet that has since disappeared (so SUPER perfectly clear) that she wants It’s a Brad, Brad World to fall on its bespectacled face. [WWD]

- In addition to all things crotchless, American Apparel is now specializing in vintage scarves, including Yves Saint Laurent, Calvin Klein and Kenzo. [Racked]

- And why not shouldn’t AA class it up a bit? According to CEO/repeat sex offender Dov Charney, American’s getting “its groove back.” thanks to a recent influx of consumer dollars. [Fashionista]

- Bridesmaids is snatching up trophies and nominations left and right, and while it seem ripe for a sequel, star and writer Kristen Wiig is not interested. But a sequel might happen, nonetheless, focusing on breakout star Melissa McCarthy‘s brash and ballsy character. Two words of advice: Evan Almighty.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals removed whatever pole they had been sitting on as of late to point it in blame at Janet Jackson, Kim Kardashian and Cameron Crowe. The alliterative trio have earned positions on PETA’s list of “Celebrity Grinches of 2011″ for their unfriendliness towards animals.

PETA has these snarky comments for their Grinches:

“Filmmaker and former visionary Cameron Crowe went retro in the wrong way for his new flick, We Bought a Zoo, which relied on the performing-animal industry—in which the “actors” are routinely neglected and even abused—instead of using state-of-the-art computer imaging. Exploiting live animals to tell a story about saving animals? At least Elizabethtown won’t go down as his worst creative flop.”

“Some have speculated that Kim Kardashian’s wedding to NBA forward Kris Humphries was fake. Too bad the socialite princess doesn’t have the same enthusiasm for faking her fur. Unlike her sweet sister Khloe, who starred in her own PETA anti-fur ad, Kim just can’t seem to divorce herself from fur and say ‘I do’ to a kind and kompassionate wardrobe.”

“When Janet Jackson had her infamous “wardrobe malfunction” during the Super Bowl, at least the flesh that popped into view was her own—unlike the stolen animal skins that she drapes herself with, which are as dead as her taste in fashion (not to mention her career). Ms. Jackson, you’re just plain nasty.”

PETA’s outrage over Janet stems from her Blackglama‘s “What Becomes a Legend Most?” campaign, which has featured a host of other legendary ladies including Diana Ross, Audrey Hepburn, Lucille Ball, Lena Horne, Barbra Streisand, Judy Garland, Elizabeth Taylor and Bette Davis. Now I can abide by ridiculing Kim Kardashian. In fact, I even fully support it. As for Cameron Crowe, so sue the guy for wanting to use real animals — that’s not to say they weren’t treated humanely on set. Plus, how bad could he possibly be? He did Almost Famous (and almost convinced the world Kate Hudson could act).

But you don’t just go around insulting divas like that. Sure she may have flashed a few hundred million people. Sure she hasn’t had a hit in god knows how long. Sure, she’s been relegated to starring in Tyler Perry movies and Nutrisystem commercials. But what about the good times? What about the parade of hits and classics over the past 25 years? And more importantly, what about her hot billionaire boyfriend who probably keeps her up to her wigs in all the stolen animal skins she wants?

It’s time someone stood up to people like PETA, which makes me proud to announce the formation of my new charity, PETD (pronounced: petted) — People for the Ethical Treatment of Divas. Divas are not ours to eat, wear, or experiment on — just to use for entertainment and in drag shows.

- It’s as if the heavens opened up and shined down on me this afternoon. Diva among divas and my personal spirit animal Diana Ross will finally get her due at the 54th annual Grammy Awards where she’ll be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award, her first trophy in over 800 years of shutting-shit-down. [Broadway World]

- Among the other Grammy honorees is the late Steve Jobs who will be posthumously awarded one of the Special Merit Awards. [E!]

- A brief history of glitter: from Neanderthals to World War II and Haitian voodoo. [Etsy on Vimeo]

- Details on Madonna’s Truth or Dare line have come flooding, including news that Madge will be recycling photos from a 2010 shoot with Mert and Marcus for Interview Magazine for the ad campaign. And the commercials will feature her classic 80s ballad, “Lazy for You.” [Madonnarama]

- Prince William and wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge may be of royal stock, but that don’t mean they don’t like to put it down on the dancefloor. At a charity event, Will ran into a sassy black girl — who probably said something along these lines — and the result was this priceless moment of shoulder-dusting. Kate lovingly looks on as if to say, “Oh, Will, you’re so hood in your comtempo-casual sweater and mom jeans.” Meanwhile the Prince should use this angle for every photo op from here on out. We haven’t been this attracted to him in ages. [Styleite]

- London Fashion Week, known for gently nurturing young, emerging designers, apparently didn’t feel like breaking in a new class of Fashion East-sponsored designers and are re-using the same up-and-comers from last LFW. [Elle UK]

- The Kardashians have been accused of selling and endorsing products manufactured in Chinese sweatshops using child labor, an allegation that caught the klan unawares. Kim and co. claim that they are taking the accusations “very seriously,” but the head of China’s foremost human rights organization thinks they’re just a bunch of greedy liars. ”If they [the Kardashians] don’t stop endorsing these products or do anything to improve the conditions in the factories,” said Li Qiang, executive director of China Labor Watch, ”they are sending a message to the public saying, ‘We will do anything to make money.’” I think they sent that message a while ago. [Radar]

The drama of the business, the transcendent beauty of the clothes, and the backstabbing bitchery of the fashion world have always been popular subjects in film. Whether it’s a satanic editor with a taste for Italian couture, a young fashionista dining with diamonds, or a group of disenfranchised queens hoping to set the City of Lights ablaze, these 10 movies are the greatest odes to fashion.

Set amidst the backdrop of 80s New York ball culture, Paris Is Burning is an exploration of beauty, race, sexuality, capitalism and the American Dream, all wrapped up in a dragtastic homage to the transformative powers of fashion. Also, where do you think Madonna learned to Vogue?

See Also: To Wong Foo -- Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1994) Drag queens, yes; acute social commentary, not so much...but how can you argue with this? Oh, that's right, you can't.

1

2. The September Issue (2009)

Step inside the hallowed halls of the fashion Bible that is U.S. Vogue. We get a rare glimpse of the woman behind the bob and Chanel sunglasses, as Anna Wintour admits with a palpable hint of regret that the distinguished members of her family think what she does is "quite funny." But it's Grace Coddington's bleeding artistic heart that stays with you throughout.

See Also: Bill Cunningham New York (2010)
Bill Cunningham, legendary streetstyle photographer for the New York Times has a Puritanical simplicity to his life but a couturier's eye for trends and detail that is documented in this tender portrait, featuring the likes of Wintour, Carmen Dell'Orefice, Anna Piaggi and Michael Kors.

2

3. Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)

Though not necessarily a film about fashion, Breakfast at Tiffany's is the quintessential fashion film. Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly continues to teach and inspire girls and certain boys everywhere on how to be chic, how to be urbane and how to live fabulously in New York -- or at least how to pretend. And there has never been a more iconic Little Black Dress ever put on screen.

See Also: Darling (1965)
Darling's Diana Scott is the British, unapologetically wanton version of Holly Golightly. A morally-suspect fashion model who sleeps her way to the top, Diana still manages to come off as a naïve and sympathetic character -- despite exhibiting behavior to the contrary -- thanks to Julie Christie's Oscar-winning portrayal.

3

4. Unzipped (1995)

Sure, there are other backstage, behind the curtain, beneath the bustle documentaries of fashion designers, but none are as stylish as Isaac Mizrahi's Unzipped. When Isaac was the new, young It designer on the block; when Naomi, Cindy, Christy and Linda ruled the catwalks; when Eartha Kitt was still alive and purring -- Unzipped documents the height of 90s fashion, right before the balloon went bust.

See Also: Valentino: The Last Emperor (2008)
Whereas Unzipped follows a designer in the earlier stages of his career, The Last Emperor observes a master -- Valentino Garavani -- as he takes his final bow with his partner of 50 years by his side, Giancarlo Giammetti.

4

5. Funny Face (1957)

Audrey Hepburn makes a return to the list, but this time she is the unlikely model Jo Stockton, a bookworm with an unconventional look that inspires love in photographer Dick Avery, played by Fred Astaire. A fantastic set of photoshoots and gowns by Hubert de Givenchy are the main attractions, but Kay Thompson as salty editrix Maggie Prescott could give Miranda Priestly a run for her money.

See Also: The Women (1939)
Though Funny Face features a climactic runway show, The Women spared no expense in shooting its nearly 10-minute fashion show in color, despite the entire film being in black and white. Do not mistake this classic with that awful remake Diane English regurgitated a few years ago.

5

6. Mahogany (1975)

Arguably Diana Ross's greatest cinematic achievement -- if only for this -- Mahogany chronicles the rise of supermodel Mahogany from the slums of Chicago to the runways of Paris and finally to international acclaim as a designer in her own right, only to give it all up for the man she loves...a move Ms. Ross would openly spit upon, but which she plays with considerable believability.

See Also: Gia (1998)
While Mahogany is a fictional supermodel who dabbles on the dark side, Gia Carangi was the real thing whose excesses eventually got the best of her. The film is best remembered, however, for launching Angelina Jolie to stardom, thus ensuring Jennifer Aniston's lifelong ire.

6

7. Clueless (1995)

What can one say about Clueless? The perfect teen movie, it's infinitely quotable -- "You're just a virgin...who can't...DROIVE." -- and is there a character with as enviable a closet as Cher Horowitz? Bonus points for first introducing me and perhaps a majority of the world to Azzedine Alaïa.

See Also: The 2nd Season of Gossip Girl (2008-2009)
With the possible exception of Mean Girls, there hasn't come along a teen movie as smart or as witty as Clueless. But in terms of style, the second season of Gossip Girl rose to the challenge, making fashion icons of Blair Waldorf and Serena Vanderwoodsen, as well as their real-life counterparts, Leighton Meester and Blake Lively.

7

8. Blow-Up (1966)

Michelangelo Antonioni captures the mod mood of 60s Swinging London as a hedonistic fashion photographer -- played by David Hemmings -- tries to figure out whether or not he accidentally snapped a murder. In the film's most famous scene, 6'1 supermodel Veruschka writhes around the set of a photoshoot as Hemmings makes love to her with his camera.

See Also: La Dolce Vita (1960)
If Blow-Up swings, La Dolce Vita sways. Federico Fellini's romantic portrait of Rome is as sleek and stylish as protagonist Marcello Rubini's suits.

8

9. The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

It's a matter of public record that Lauren Weisberger's roman à clef was based on Anna Wintour -- who famously wore Prada to the film's opening -- but what the film accomplishes (okay, let's be real, what Meryl Streep accomplishes) is creating not only one of the greatest villains, but also one of the greatest fashion icons, in modern cinema.

See Also: Sex and the City: The Movie (2008)
A completely unnecessary production and by the loosest definitions an actual "movie," Sex and the City also benefited from Pat Field's brilliant styling. But unlike The Devil Wears Prada, there was no Oscar nomination for attiring Carrie and Co.

9

10.Zoolander (2001)

Everything benefits from a parody -- rather, everything benefits from a good parody, Though Zoolander is far from perfect, it's a fun and funny romp through fashion's ridiculous playground; complete with walk-offs, an evil Galliano-esque designer in Jacobim Mugatu and the introduction of Blue Steel into the cultural lexicon. And lucky for us, there's a sequel in the works thus righting everything with the world.

See Also: Brüno (2009)
Taking off where Ben Stiller catwalked off, Sacha Baron Cohen's flamboyant character traipsed through America, spreading his questionably fashionable and gratuitously gay, booty-shorted self from sea to shining seaman.

10

Mariah Carey, god bless you. Always willing to take the diva schtick to levels even Diana Ross would look at twice before saying, “Really, tranny?,” Mimi is emancipated once again — though this time it’s from that tank she was huffing around in during her 23-month pregnancy. After losing 70 lbs — 40 in water weight during the first week, the other 30 using Jenny (née Craig) — the first thing the songbird did was strip down and whip out her best late-90s hoochie for a new commercial. And she didn’t even have to resort to any completely obvious camera trickery — key words being “completely obvious.”

And what would a dramatic weight-loss story be without a cover of Us Weekly? Bam! And what would a comeback be without an inspiring song to shove down people’s throats (and just in time for the holidays, whaddya know?)

Boom! Mimi’s recorded a new track, “Make It Happen,” not to be confused with her old “Make It Happen,” which I still dust off and jam to when the occasion strikes me. The new “MIT” will appear in Mariah’s new Jenny ads, since she’s signed on as their latest spokesman.

Congrats, Mariah! Now, you can focus on mounting a proper comeback to support your family because I think we all know Nick Cannon‘s paper route isn’t going to pay the bills.
Up. Side. Down. Boy you turn me. In. Side. Out. And.
Draped in a dark palette of mostly blacks and navy blues with the occasional neon hair statement, Klein is channeling a little film noir by way of Alfred Hitchcock — Vertigo especially comes to mind…for obvious reasons.

Think of Maxim’s as the Studio 54 of the 1890s. But instead of Halston, Liza and coke, there’s Charles Frederick Worth, famously infamous courtesan Liane de Pougy and opium. That magically hedonistic time known as the Belle Epoque in France saw the establishment of a pillar of Parisian society, Maxim’s. More than a restaurant, it was the social meeting ground for generations of artists, nobles, diplomats, stars and folks of less reputable distinction. It has survived two world wars, multiple owners and Mick Jagger showing up in sneakers and 120 years later it’s still the place to see and be seen. Assouline’s Maxim’s: Mirror of Parisian Life by Jean-Pascal Hesse examines the people, the historical and cultural events and of course the food that distinguish the rich history of the restaurant at 3 rue Royal.

In an interview with Milk Studios, noted cacomorphobic, Nicola Formichetti revealed he is planning to launch his own brand next year, a sneak preview of which will be available at his pop-up store, NICOLA’S, this New York Fashion Week.

Photo: Milk Studios

In addition to his own brand, NICOLA’S will showcase 12 young designers from China, “cool stuff from Japan,” Uniqlo, a performance space as well as creations he’s done for Mugler and go-to muse Lady Gaga. NICOLA’S will be open from September 8-21 at 57 Walker St in Tribeca.

Meanwhile, Formichetti also describes his vision for Mugler:

I want Mugler to become a digital global brand. I want to create a new kind of fashion brand, a new way of looking at fashion and take a step into digital communication. A kind of brand that hasn’t been seen before, something new for our next generation.

The future of fashion:

For me, the digital approach is very important, it’s the future. But we should not forget about our reality, the physical world. We always need to embrace new things, but never be dependent on them. There will be fashion magazines on paper and on-line. The fashion industry as a whole will shift towards digitalism too. I don’t really know how, but it’ll be great! I love change!

And his trials and tribulations at Starbucks:

I used to hate my name, I always thought, Nicola sounds a lot like a girl..And Formichetti is just weird.. kind of like Spaghetti! I always wanted to change it to Nick, and my surname to Williams.. or Smith.. Nick Smith. I always got embarrassed at Starbucks, when they asked my name..I said its Nick..didnt want them to make weird faces. I guess I got used to it now.

I used to feel the same about my name, then one day I woke up and thought, Lester Leon Talley Ross is not so bad after all. [Milk Made]

Don’t worry, Halston, I wish it was the 70s too. Me, you, Diana Ross, Liza Minnelli, Jerry Hall and Bianca Jagger blowin’ rails off Elton John at 54 to Donna Summers‘ “I Feel Love,” everyone in a psychadelic caftan or beige pantsuit of your making. Fast forward 40 years — has it been that long?! — and you’re a struggling label unable to find your footing after the death of your visionary founder Roy Halston. And now, not only has Carrie Bradshaw trotted away as your president, but that guy who’s banging Marchesa left too. What to do now? (P.S. I’ve got a coke spoon and Liza on speed dial — coincidentally, the two are related.)

Sarah Jessica Parker‘s departure was a tiny little mention in her Vogue cover story:

When Sex and the City, to her own surprise, made her a fashion star, she launched her own design label and perfumes, as well as signing on to run the Halston Heritage label, a relationship that recently came to an end.

Days after that story broke, Harvey Weinstein has followed SJP out to pasture, leaving the company in which he had equity stake for the past few years. Well, the good news is Halston’s parent company, Hilco, is still confident in the label — at least someone is — as its seen recent growth in retail.

And also, Liza picked Diana up in the Beemer and they’re on their way with Elton riding bitch. Happy days are here again! [WWD]

Great style transcends space and time. From a 19th century Indian colonel in head-to-toe tartan to a 70s supermodel in bright yellow plaid, significant fashion statements will always circle back around. Elizabeth Walker explores this trend phenomenon through historic photographs in her gorgeously-done coffee table staple Style Book: Fashionable Inspirations (Flammarion 2011). If you’re ever wondering how to wear that menswear-inspired suit, vintage fur shawl or those sky-high platforms, let style icons like Diane Keaton, Elton John and Sue Coddington be your guides.

“‘One picture is worth ten thousand words’* and these carefully selected images are set to inspire anybody fascinated by either fashion, foibles, or simply the photographs themselves,” Elizabeth Walker says in the book’s introduction. “It is all about stylish contrasts, strange situations and rarely glimpsed pictures; all set to get the mind buzzing and the creative juices flowing.”

It’s difficult to put this amazing book into words when the story in-between the covers are told through photographs. And so, here are some of the coolest images that will surely inspire your wardrobe this week.

And there is more where that came from. Walker explores 13 trends that have been relevant since the 19th century until modern times.

What owning this book says about you: I love fashion history and the evolution of trends throughout the years. I’m a classic girl always looking for ways to update a definitive dressing movement.

What your dinner guests will say upon seeing this book on your coffee table: This book goes so well with the vintage clothes in your closet. I love Oscar Wilde in that fur coat!

How this book will make your fashion brain grow: By learning where trends came from and how they’ve evolved throughout the years, you’ll find new ways to recycle your classic pieces. True style comes through knowing the art and adaptation of fashion through time.

The drama of the business, the transcendent beauty of the clothes and the backstabbing bitchery of the fashion world have always been popular subjects in film. Whether it’s a satanic editor with a taste for Italian couture, a young fashionista dining with diamonds or a group of disenfranchised queens hoping to set the City of Lights ablaze, these 10 movies are the greatest odes to and about fashion.

1. Paris Is Burning (1990)

See Also: To Wong Foo — Thanks for Everything! Oh, that’s right, you can’t.

It’s not easy being a goddess, but the first step in reaching those divine heights is looking the part. Now that Charlie Sheen‘s goddesses — a porn star and a marijuana cover girl (the criteria for goddessing these days are noticeably lax) — have been THRUST into the spotlight, it’s makeover time! After all, they’re representing Charlie Fucking Sheen here. And he deserves only the best. So here are 10 goddess-worthy gowns fresh off the runway, sure to keep the Sheen Machine running on all four cylinders.

Photo: People.com

Prabal Gurung

Prabal Gurung really knows how to make a woman feel like a lady; something Sheen usually undoes in a matter of minutes, but a pastel pink can soften anyone’e edges.

Donna Karan

Sheer-ly you jest! I’m sure Charlie’s angels are used to anything see-through, particularly pornogal Rachel Oberlin aka Bree Olson. However, Donna Karan shows how to class up that look while still giving off a whiff of that all-important “whore” vibe; the Charlie Sheen catnip, as it were.

Jason Wu

It’s important to make a statement whenever entering a room and Jason Wu’s finale gown makes that statement loud and clear: “I’ve arrived now kill yourself.” Which is something that Charlie’s been known to utter to more than a few hookers in the past.

Giles

Every goddess has her dark side — even Aphrodite could be a ruthless, conniving bitch — but that’s not to say they still can’t look heavenly. Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if Charlie loves a little leather (or a lot).

Alberta Ferretti

Some goddesses deign to walk the earth with mortals, while some come alive in nature. And for some, like Chronic Girl 2010, Natalie Kenly, nature holds the promise of some really choice bud. What better way to answer that age-old question “how green was my valley?” then with this floral-inspired number from Alberta Ferretti.

Prada

Besides ancient Greece, the greatest goddesses resided in the 70s: Diana Ross, Cher, Liza, Bianca Jagger, Elton John. Prada took a page out of that glittery era’s chapter with this sequined fur number that would look great hunched over a pile of cocaine on Charlie Sheen’s coffee table.

Versace

The bodice of this gown is positively Grecian, but the skirt says fiesta. A goddess can really kick up her tranny heels with this gam-bearing confection, whether they’re dancing vertically, or more likely, horizontally in a pool of tiger blood.

Dries Van Noten

If anything, a goddess loves to feel powerful. What’s the point of all those Sheen-baiting gifts if you don’t show ‘em off once in a while, am I right? And nothing says “power” like a gold lamé pantsuit. Business-fabulous.

Gareth Pugh

This one’s for good ole Chuck Sheen, for whenever he grows tired of those baseball caps and poly blend button downs and wants to feel pretty while showing off that Adonis DNA

Mugler

Monster Mother Goddess, Lady Gaga, can certainly share some tips on dressing the part: after walking in the Mugler show she subsequently bought the entire collection. It’s doubtful that Natalie and Rachel could walk in these towering platforms, but they’re on Team Sheen and Team Sheen is all about winning. And winners don’t fall, except perhaps from grace.

“Though John was planning to have his “40th” birthday in Paris, Kate teamed up with another friend to surprise the designer in London at a brand new bar in the Savoy. While the Parisian party would have been corporate and appropriate, this was seemingly anything but…

From the performers – impersonators of David Bowie, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Barbra Streisand, and Michael Jackson – to the random appearance of Isabelle Huppert to the break-dancing twins, it’s clear this was a party that won’t be outdone for quite sometime.”

WWD: You go way back with Kate.

J.G.: I’ve known her since she was 14. She threw a fantastic surprise birthday for me. You shouldn’t write that. But it was so genius I have to tell you. I was going to have a birthday party in Paris.

WWD: When?

J.G.: It was last week. I’m like all the old actresses who have an official birthday and an unofficial birthday. This was my unofficial one. I started to organize it with a friend in Paris but it got all out of hand. It was going to turn very corporate, so I said, “Uh-uh-uh.” It’s just not the birthday you want to start bragging about. The big 4-0. [He exaggerates the number, to indicate that he has shaved off a few years.] So I said, “OK, we’ll move it to London.” I said, “I just want to do something quiet. Could we just go under the radar? Maybe to someone’s house?” Anyway, Kate and my friend Francesca [Cutler] arranged it, a surprise. We went to the new bar that just opened at the Savoy. It’s very Deco, very beautiful. I arrive and there were fantastic creatures there that I hadn’t seen for like twenty years, the London posse. And then they introduce the acts. David Bowie had come over to perform for me followed by Diana Ross followed by Tina Turner and then Barbra Streisand.

WWD: Oh stop!

J.G.: No, you stop! And then the last person who came on was Michael Jackson! They were all impersonators! It was so English and so tawdry! It was fantastic!

WWD: We can’t put this in the story?

J.G.: Of course you can. — it’s a true story! So I go outside for a cigarette with Kate, OK? She has this little jumpsuit on with little sequins. She looked gorgeous. Some dirty old man walks by and goes, “Oh, you do that really well. You could be a model.” She goes, “F— off! I’m too short!” Then this limousine turns up, this shiny limousine and this fantastic, chic woman gets out with the shades on and the bodyguards. Me and Kate look each other and we’re like, “Oh!” You don’t do that in London. Unless you’re Elvis Presley, you don’t do that. So this wonderful creature comes up to me, takes the glasses off and goes, “John!” And I go, “Hi…” I still didn’t quite know what was going on. She goes, “It’s Isabelle.” It was Isabelle Huppert, one of France’s greatest actresses, who had been giving a press conference and just turned up. So she goes, “What are you doing here?” and I said, “Oh we’re just having a little party celebrating my 40th. Would you like to join us?” And I’m like, “Shit, how do I get out of this one?” “Lexie, Lexie, it’s Isabelle! You’ve got to look after her.” She had the best time because I kept asking her if she was OK and she would say, “Laissez-moi! Laissez-moi! C’est une scene que ne j’ai jamais vue!” [“Let me be! Let me be! It’s a scene I’ve never seen before!”] Because the English posse were really going for it that night. She loved it. There were these kids who were break dancing to Michael who were twins. [Galliano extends an arm to approximate their height — perhaps that of an average eight-year-old.] One’s blonde, one’s brunette. They were break dancing, diving. But there was like a time lapse of something like six seconds. Twins do that apparently. It was the most weird thing to see. It was incredible.

… In a perfect world we would all have best friends like supermodel Kate Moss.

It is fitting then that the cult movie was the inspiration behind these striking images published in US fashion glossy, V Magazine.
