5.  Collegefashionista.com- A website filled with Zuckerberg’s  inspiration of creating a connection with every fashion guru throughout every University in the world! From Yale to the many campuses of NYU, Amy Levin has pushed the limits of what fashion means to a younger audience and allowing everyone to glimpse into the innovative styles that the young create, and follow! Any fashion business would be dull without a little CollegeFashionista.com in their life!

6.  @IamSamLim- I’d be surprised if you all weren’t familiar with Lookbook.com ‘s Fashion Director & Stylist, Samantha Lim. A wicked fashionista taking on New York City with killer six in pumps no matter what weather, having the best closets any girl would kill for, and getting to attend all the best style filled events out there! Not to mention she’s ridiculously funny and can write up a mean article!

8.  @COACD- Just like a modeling agency but better! Douglas Perrett a model-casting director says it like it is and keeps his blog running with fresh faces not to mention was listed under Refinery 29’s Fashion’s 50!

9. Refinery 29- From putting together the perfect outfit dictionary for just about any occasion any glitter-veined girl would have to attend, Refinery 29 is like the guide to a perfect and easy outfit life. Clearly with some of the best street style coverage R29 is rocking it!

@Bergdorfs- Bergdorf Goodman, two words that can change any bad situation for any women into pure bliss! With a timeline dedicated to inside tips from the designers, to the store’s events, and some twitpic beauty here and there, we’d be crazy not to love @bergdorfs tweets and blog.

Yesterday 13 PETA people changed their Facebook profiles to big block letters, then posted rapid fire to spell out “DK Bunny Butcher.” Poor rabbits.

PLEASE, no one tell PETA about the mounds of fur heaped in my apartment. I don’t wear them. I just like to climb on top of them for naps.

In addition to PETA’s Facebook coup, the group protested outside Donna Karan‘s New York offices. According to one PETA member, they “hope[d] to reach new audiences who may not yet know about the cruelty that goes into every piece of fur used in her line.”

Last week, Becks and I had the opportunity to attend the 9th Annual Tulips & Pansises: The Headress Affair at Gotham Hall in NYC. A benefit for VillageCare, a nonprofit which helps those with HIV/AIDS, the event brought together a dozen extremely talented designers, Whitney Port, Fern Malis, Kelly Cutrone and Patricia Fields.

Always an event to look forward too, Tulips & Pansises outdid itself these year with headdresses designed by The Blondes, Tracey Reese, Betsey Johnson and DKNY. Best of all, the event was staged for an episode of The City, which we apparently will be on due to our seating directly behind the People’s Revolution crew, which included the super cute Ava Cutrone.

Can’t wait to see that episode, especially since we are also in  the episode airing this week, which takes place at a Guess Party we attending in the Spring with Joe Zee. Maybe FashionIndie will get a bigger cameo in the future?

If you were following our Tweets last week, you’d know that Becks and I met Kelly and Patricia. Patty grilled me on her work and told me if she ever decided to get married, it would be with someone who “entertained her”, male or female, while Kelly revealed that she’s questioning the merits of her book now considering the recent loss of her father.

Kelly, your book is major and you should never question it. You’ve created a warning tome for young females who enter New York with Sex and the City dreams and for that you should be proud.

Carolina Herrera, DKNY, Betsey Johnson, Lilly Pulitzer, Tracy Reese among many others, will join forces with NYC’s finest floral designers to create a runway show of elaborate floral headdresses made from living plants and fresh cut flowers. The springtime event, which raises funds for VillageCare (www.villagecare.org), a non-profit organization providing vital healthcare programs to people living with HIV/AIDS, will be hosted by TV Personality & Style Guru James Aguiar and Co-chaired by People’s Revolution Founder Kelly Cutrone and Writer & Direct-Action Philanthropist Ariana N. Rockefeller. Guest judges include Fern Mallis, Kelly Killoren Bensimon, John Bartlett, Ashleigh Verrier, and Freddie Leiba. They will honor the headdress design teams in the categories of “Most Beautiful, Most Original, Most Entertaining and Most Outrageous.”

A friend referred me to David Alexander’s site, and on viewing his collections I fell in love with the fur, leather, mesh, studs, jewels, and all of my favorite things compiled into one fashion show. Once I began to speak with David, I found his quirky, enthusiastic and overly creative personality absolutely thrilling, and had to share it with you.

Here’s a little anecdote that got me hooked on David straight away:

So my friend Susan calls me and says ” your gonna be so mad at me.” and as I put down my Playstation controller and jogged over to my computer I see this email and I’m like…..who is that, and she goes “Well I dunno, but she is prolly never gonna buy another skirt from you or Curve again..” and Im like omg omg did i fudge up and the skirt zipper was broke because I do pride myself on an 100% usa made quality product…”She goes well I saw her in the skirt and I freaked out and ran over and I was lil drunk and I sort of shook her cause I was in the gold one and was like OMG OMG my friend made these arent they great”….So basically if you buy my clothes in NY and a crazy beautiful woman runs over to you its my friend Susan haha I cant be mad she is just all about my designs and gives me so much support.

I was also lucky enough to hear from David on a few questions that I asked:

FASHION INDIE:  How did you get your start in designing?

DAVID ALEXANDER: I started designing at 12 when I started drawing super hero costumes, and worked watched my grandma design wedding dresses for fun, then eventually went to FIDM and Parsons where I got my BA in Fine arts Fashion Design and Fashion Marketing. I have done freelance work for Juicy, DKNY, and Simon G.

FI: Your collection ‘Broken Princess and Her Secret Prince’ features a secret prince named David…any chance it’s named after you?

DA: Yah sort of I design clothing based on stories I come up so with every outfit I took all the women I know and work with and sort of designed around that, the princesses name was Alexis after my little sister.  I guess my ultimate ambitions of having a luxury line, a comic book, and an action cartoon television series haha.

FI: Can you tell us anything about your new line? I hear from a super secret source that it’s called Dahlia Dangeroux

DA: So far yes, it’s designed around inspiration from the Black Dahlia, and my non-fiction short movie ill be working on with an actress friend of mine….Im about 60% it will be called Dahlia Dangeroux or Fleeting Stars…but around the same concept, which is a young hollywood actress is kidnapped by mad man who is kidnaping the creme de la creme of Young Hollywood, and while knocked out in the drunk she dreams of all the movies, red carptes and wonderful things she could do if she survives…..and the unfolding of the story. it was inspried by a spoken word song called victim by the golden palminos. I know weird right? LOL im totally a nerdo

FI: I’ve noticed you shoot a lot with the fabulous Laura La Rue.  Has she, or any other models acted as your muse to your lines?

DA: I use people who i feel are truly beautiful inside and out, that brings out the best in a dress a confident sexy woman..Laura is also a red head like my mom and as an ode to her I always use red heads and brunettes …I also love love love Monica Bellucci she is a muse as well as Michelle Yeoh, Gong Li and my other friend Iwona Lis. one of my new muses is Karen Elson (YSL model) and Chanel Iman.

FI: You make everything from evening gowns to menswear..how on earth does your brain balance all of that?

DA: I have no clue I think my skull is full of clouds red bull, anime and video games. I always make these collections and when im done im like does is this stuff go together at all and then when people read the story there like ya…and im like…….( O_o…..ok) I guess i just do my own thing and so far its worked…

FI: What’s next? Red carpet looks, diffusion line, world takeover?

DA: (Hehehe :::Twiddling Fingers:::: World Domination All My clothes have secret tracking devices MWAHAHA)……. Um well winter is always BOOM BOOM glamour because it can be heavier but my winter is gonna be very high end couture with a few actual everyday..well what I call everyday dresses if it were up to me everyone would run around in evening gowns and furs trying to one up each other….But I just got signed on by SAGA FUR for the Royal Vision Team so I will be taking a trip in October to see all the techniques and amazing things they can do with it im thinking Chains Metal Spikes and Sable… Im def working on some casual items that are more affordable but they will still retain there runway glamour look and probably only kick the price down a good 40 or 60 bux but hey save where u  can save and where the same dress every day…I wear the same jeans….they just fit so well!

FI: Any advice for hopeful designers?

DA: YOU GOTTA WORK!….Um I dunno…ya know the world of fashion is tough and there are moments you can get very heavy hearted my advice is to if you wanna be a designer get tough skin and a shit load of 5hour energy because when you think you have made it or you have caught up you realize its 2 months from your next show and your scrambling from fabric shop to shop looking for your inspiration …..Haha I guess I have alot of advice to give like dont judge any other designers work unless there an asshole then rip up there dress, but if there cool compliment them because everyone has there own style and when u see someone and out and your like OMG what are they wearing well there wearing someone design which is more then I can say for some other people who spend all day judging…but I wont give up to much info its best to learn as you do the ups and downs create great great collections.

Super impressed with this look at first glance, then I realized all his clothes were from H&M, Zara, and DKNY. Now I’m even more impressed because it can be really hard to get a solid edgy look from these stores without looking really cheesy. The picture is in black and white though, which totally helps.

It’s a recession, don’t you know you have to go super commercial when people aren’t buying? UGH! Not that DKNY was ever the most innovative brand, but they are killing me!I don’t think there is anything flattering or appealing about this collection. It’s boring! Not to mention, yellow and orange? I think those are the hardest colors to wear hands down! Call me out of touch, but all of my interest and respect in 99% of the major labels out there has been completely destroyed.

To be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if people argue that the new bikini billboard is giving the wrong image about female body-types. Whichever way you look at it, there is always going to be someone who disapproves. 

As I digress, here’s what I have to say to those right-winged complainers, responsible for making E. Houston LAME: Your daughter has done much worse.

In New York, as in The Beatles’ song, you get by with a little help from your friends. So, when you find yourself not invited to any fun events, you reach out to those around you and do everything short of begging to be their plus one.

When on Sunday at the DKNY fragrance launch my publicist/friend Meghan invited me to the GenArt party that Tuesday night, I jumped at the opportunity. The GenArt film festival had already been in full swing since last week and I had yet to attend an event. It seemed fitting the party was hosted at BLVD on the Bowery as this year’s main sponsor was a car company.

Exiting the cab, I had high hopes when I saw paparazzi circling outside like hungry vultures—furtively glancing over in a vain hope one might take my picture. When that inevitably did not occur, I at least expected a celebrity-packed room inside. While there were a few bold-face names including Moby, Jennifer Love-Hewitt and that minx of a teacher from Gossip Girl who seduces Dan Humphrey, they were hidden away as GenArt separated the famous from the ticket-buying fans.

Even though I wasn’t one of the people forking over cash to go and gawk at B-list celebrities, I still couldn’t help but feel a little unfabulous after the event. So attending a party for “Beautiful People” was exactly what I needed to get my spirits and ego back where they belong: in a deluded fairytale world of red carpets and photographers.

You know a party’s exclusive when an editor can’t get into his own magazine’s event. On Thursday night, the stretch of sidewalk around Ninth Avenue and W 16th street was packed shoulder to shoulder with hipsters and downtown nightlife fixtures all vying to get inside Hiro ballroom for Paper Magazine’s “Beautiful People” party, celebrating the latest issue.

Word on the street was the event had received over 4,000 RSVPs and so the door was tighter than Joan River’s face. Thanks to my photo in the last issue and blatant disregard for the two-block-long line, I was lucky enough to make it inside, briefly making an appearance on the step and repeat before heading downstairs to partake in the revelry and company of the evening’s beautiful people.

Guests who made it in before the fire marshals put Hiro in lockdown included Kat DeLuna, Erin Fetherston, The Blonds, and Richie Rich while among those stuck outside were recording artist Estelle, Lydia Hearst, Paper Editor-at-Large Peter Davis and countless others.

While hundreds were left simultaneously fuming and freezing outside, inside DJ Cassidy—who also appeared in the issue—warmed up the party with a set of mostly 80’s dance hits. By 9:30, everyone seemed to be feverishly awaiting cover girl Katy Perry’s performance. Camera flashes exploded as Katy came on stage in a shimmery sequin mini-dress and launched into Hot N’ Cold. She rounded out her four-song set with a spirited rendition of “I Kissed A Girl,” all the while wielding a giant inflatable tube of chapstick.

After a night like that, I would have normally cashed out and ended the week on a high note, but when I heard from a much cooler friend there was a secret “Free Beatrice” party being held to rally support for the recently shuttered haughty hipster haven, I knew I couldn’t miss it—if only for indulging my ego by getting into yet another ultra-exclusive fête.

It was with some nervous excitement that on Friday night I made my way to the chic and newly opened Cooper Square Hotel where an elevator took us up to a giant penthouse with soaring city views on all sides. The picturesque location was probably the furthest thing from the darkened and dungeon-like basement of Beatrice, but the skinny hipsters were very much the same. There was smoking, Mary-Kate Olson and guys relieving themselves off the balcony and in the showers—all proving that you can the hipsters out of The Beatrice, but you can’t take The Beatrice out of the Hipsters.

Gearing up for their 20th anniversary, DKNY has teamed up with Levi’s for a collection of jeans. The three styles are the wide-leg jean, the skinny jean, and the boyfriend jean. All coming in a variety of washes, the jeans are sold at a number of retailers including Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdale’s.

Making her move from McGuire to mature, Hilary Duff has teamed up with DKNY to launch her second self-made label “Barely Legal.” Slated to hit department stores like Lord and Taylor and Nordstrom this fall, Duff calls her line feminine and “aggressive in a good way.” I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of collaborations (especially with celebrity designers) but by the looks of the drawings, there may be some potential for a decent line!

On the flip side, the idea of a runway show can be viewed as 2009′s It-bag, only the rich and glamorous can afford it and bystanders look on in amazement. Who knows, maybe this recession is simply the fashion industry’s version of spring cleaning, making runway shows only for the invested, focused, and prepared designers. Oscar de la Renta’s double runway delight is a prime example of this notion. 

Either the runways become “so last year,” sending hundreds of bean-pole models home packing or they get put on a pedestal, an honor to have your collection even grace one. Oh runways, you are a scary toss up.

Now some more shots have surfaced. I was sort of hoping the first teaser image wouldn’t be the final design, but it looks like the weirdly-bordered Sartorialist shots are here to stay…

Where the fuck is that show!!!

Another day, another designer out. This time it’s DKNY. Donna Karen was already planning to ship out for a cheaper venue and now the younger brand is out as well. Who will be left to show at Bryant Park!!!

Well if anyone is interested in skipping the $100,000 price tag IMG attaches to their space, we’ve got a very nice one just blocks from the tent for $7000 (aka Fashion Indie Week’s space at Gotham Hall.

Where the fuck is that show!!!

The Sartorialist himself, Scott Schuman has shot the new Spring 2009 DKNY Jeans campaign.

Featuring indie favorites like Chanel Iman, Sean Lennon, and Daisy Lowe, the ads are in trademark Schuman style — an individual stopped and snapped while strolling through the city.

Schuman’s ads will debut in February in magazines, on billboards, and online.

Okay, so Lowe is the new face for Marc Jacob’s Marc by Marc Spring 2009 campaign. Rumor also has it that she snagged the DKNY campaign, to be shot by The Sartorialist photographer Scott Schuman. Jacobs calls her “adorable” and and Fashionologie says Lowe could bring about “the death of size zero.” Compliments? Yes. Patronizing compliments? You bet.

Whoever thinks Daisy Lowe is a “curvy” model really ought to have their eyes checked. Let us assess the situation: 

Height: 5′ 10″

Measurements: 32.5″ – 25.5″ – 35″

Lowe is an A-cup, with a tiny waist, the average model hip measurements and a typical model height. She isn’t curvy at all. If anything, Whitney Thompson should be considered curvy and NOT plus sized. And the media wonders why eating disorders are so popular these days.

The February campaign for DKNY isn’t all that impressive. If you’ve seen one pair of leopard print heels then you see them all. And I’m sensing a lack of individuality…I’m pretty sure Marc Jacobs already did the plain face and frumpy hair against a white brick wall. Years ago.

Rachel Bilson’s Edie Rose for DKNY Jeans line is slated to hit stores in the next month.  In preparation, DKNY has a new mini-site previewing the 15-piece collection, detailing Bilson’s inspirations, and revealing behind the scenes footage.

You can tell that the actress’ style influenced the black-white-and-yellow collection, which “was insired by Rachel’s dream closet.”

Last week’s Fashion Week was no different than any other Fashion Week. Designers still scrambled to show off their edgy silhouetted designs. Celebrities still claimed coveted front row seats to Marc Jacobs and Balenciaga. And, once again, the runway lacked diversity. This time, however, the white domination of the catwalk has some fashion icons on edge.

It seems like this past Fashion Week tried to mask its lack of black runway models.In the past,The Council of Fashion Designers of America left ethnic diversity up to the designers. This year’s president, Diane von Furstenberg, urged all designers to keep their models racially varied. Sure, black models walked in DKNY and Tracy Reese, but what about the hundreds of other designers who used few, or even no black models? It takes more than a few designers to launch ethnic diversity in the fashion industry, and with the runways creeping back to white, the “black issue” is again on the rise. 

But is the tendency for white models a racist ploy by designers or merely in consciousness of their designs? Some designers claim to use mostly white models in order to keep the “ethnicity” of the model from influencing the interpretation of his or her design. Others claim that the black model is unavailable by the agencies. Some even claim that selection is natural, and ethnicity is never in consideration.

Indeed, it is the designers right to cast models regardless of race, but if designers are truly conscious of women, shouldn’t they consider “women” as a general term? Black. White. Asian. Hispanic. Middle Eastern. We’re all women, right? Show us you design for women. All of us.

What is not to love about the 21-year-old model on the rise? Taylor Fuchs is a volleyball playing, Saskatchewan native who was plucked off of the college court and signed by Public Image Worldwide in 2007. His chiseled jaw line, dreamy blue eyes, mysterious arched eyebrows and delicate pouty lips landed him a Steven Meisel ad for Pringle of Scotland and even coveted spots in Marc by Marc Jacobs and DKNY in 2007 New York Fashion Week. Recently, Fuchs made an editorial debut in Detail, photographed by Thomas Schenk, and made a leap from Public Image Worldwide to Wilhelmina Models. Fuchs will most likely walk several big name shows during this New York Fashion Week. So what if he looks like Peter Pan? Go ahead Mr. Fuchs, take me to Neverland.

Rachel Bilson chats about her upcoming collection for DKNY Jeans, named Edie Rose after a few grandmothers, the 15 piece line is due to hit stores in September.

If it’s a hit, Bilson, who is also starring in the print campaign, is hoping for an Edie Rose sequel or two. “I think there’s potential for it to be on-going,” she says. “I definitely have an interest in continuing. We’ll see how it goes.”

And in the meantime, she’s diving into the nitty gritty.  “I just had my first sewing lesson,” she says. “My skirt came out 10 times too big, and it’s sort of a mess, but I did learn how to use a sewing machine. So I’m on my way.”

I never thought about the idea of music trends in fashion, I see the connection on runways when models walk in unison to music from hot artists, but it seems that the trend is hitting retail as well.

The group seems to be this seasons flavor, with tracks playing in stores and the group performing live at Ralph Lauren’s East Hampton location on June 21st.

The tracks are very background perfect, relaxing and indiefific.

Is it just me or are these a little too familiar to the white “death” bikes that already appear throughout the city.
