Nicole Richie Is Designing a Capsule Collection for Macy’s

Fashion Star‘s Nicole Richie is getting her designs into Macy’s and she didn’t even have to compete for it. Macy’s is one of the retailers that will ideally carry winning designs by contestants on that trainwreck of a reality show, but Richie bypassed the televised bidding process and her capsule collection hits Macy’s stores come mid-September.

The collection is part of Macy’s Impulse imprint, which has previously included the likes of Giambattista Valli, Karl Lagerfeld, Doo.Ri Chung and most recently Alberta Ferretti. Featuring 24 to 30 styles, Richie’s line will only be available at about 100 Macy’s stores and online at macys.com.

According to the reality star cum designer cum reality star cum designer, the Macy’s collection “represents the many different layers of a modern woman. Women are wearing so many different hats these days. We are evolving. Not just working, but creating. This collection has a strong mix of masculine and feminine: printed chiffon mixed with faux leathers. I focused on the details, from the zipper pulls to the buttons.”

While Impulse collections are usually on sale for six weeks, Macy’s expects Nicole Richie’s offering to sell out in as soon as two weeks due to her popularity…so that means you still have a few months to prepare to snatch all those printed chiffon and faux leather confections from the apparel-hungry claws of other die-hard Fashion Star fans. 10 Sexiest Attempts at New York & London Fashion Week

Four words have damn near killed all sexiness on the runway: Downton Abbey. Mad Men. Actually, pattern mashing on hip padding with funny furry hats hasn’t helped. A barrage of wildly cool man-repelling looks sauntered down Fall 2012 runways, but sexy was rather difficult to locate. A straight man, who shall remain nameless, and I went through thousands of photos. Through a sea of “Eww”s and “Ugh”s and “I’d fire that designer”s, we found a handful of looks that qualify as sexy. Keep in mind, we mean sexy, not slutty, so all boob-bearing, thigh rising, skin tightening looks were overlooked. We’ll take curves that these designers presented, thank you. And while this Fall’s sexiest looks might not get your panties wet, they may just get your britches in a twist. And please, PLEASE if you’ve discovered a super sexy look that has escaped us, link us to it in the comments.

Belts have come up and down, all around, and in some seasons have disappeared altogether. For the Fall of 2012, however, a strong regime of stylists has determined the belt will fall at the natural waist. Ho hum as this may seem, it’s good news for you as the waist is naturally the skinniest part of the body. So you get to cinch it in tight and show off that sexy hourglass figure. Unlike the drop waist that dominated runways a year ago.

Doo.Ri Doing it Right for Macy’s

Yesterday, Doo.Ri fêted the completion of her line for Macy’s Impulse. Following Karl Lagerfeld‘s almighty Chanel suit, she’s next in the throttle for a release at Macy’s. The collection embodies her masculine crispness with feminine textures, and the good news is, aside from two jackets, the entire collection is under $100! We caught up with Doo.Ri and asked about the Unkle Karl and her upcoming collections.

I hear you’ve been in the works with this Macy’s project for over a year. When you started, did you know that Karl Lagerfeld had signed on, and the great roster of talent they were gathering?

I knew that Karl was involved. I have to be honest, he was a big motivator for me. I’ve always been a fan of Giambattista Valli, and Karl Lagerfeld is like God.

Which of your strongest aesthetics did you apply to designing this collection?

Definitely the element of jersey. I’m known for this elegant ease and I think that’s what I wanted to convey. It’s not the same jersey we use for the collection, but it’s a beautiful modal and I think it’s so modern. It’s great that they’re able to make it accessible for so many people.

What are you most excited about for your show this Fashion Week?

I love the process. During fashion week, there’s a rhythm to it. Everything feels great, and then you feel the emotion that comes with it; the momentum picks up. You work with all these creative minds and it’s so great to see it all come together. We have a rack for the clothes with about five pieces on there. And it’s amazing how fast things happen as you get closer to the day. Before you know it, it’s 3 days before styling and that rack just fills up, 10 more pieces, 20 more pieces, 30 more pieces! I don’t know how it happens! But it just does. And then things get faster. We’re working there 24/7 and it feels like 2 hours have gone by. It’s Fashion Law. Something happens where time gets sped up, but everything speeds up, the amount of clothes that are produced, the energy level, the creativity and I love that rhythm.

Doo-Ri Announced as Next Designer Collab For Macy’s

Lucky for all the ladies, Doo-Ri Chung was just announced as the next creative mind to turn out designs for Macy’s contemporary fashion department Impulse. Hitting stores February 15, the collection will feature art-inspired prints, jersey pieces mixed with leather, beautifully detailed knitwear and Doo-Ri’s iconic draping, all at an affordable price. Fashion Week has spread its Spring seed. The Big 4; NY, London, Milan and Paris have offically had their say, and now we can reflect. (We’re certainly not reflecting on NJ Fashion Week. Wait, what? That exists?! No, no. Well, yes. But really, no.) We’ve collected the trends that have spoken. The four trends that dominated the four cities we trust with our fashionable senses called out to us from many a runway. We’ve taken our favorite from each city, each trend that matters. See what’s abuzz here, there and everywhere for Spring 2012.

Menswear billowed into womenswear.The androgyny laid not in cutting a man's suit for a woman, but taking those elements that define a man's wardrobe and blowing it out with a feminine angle. Like a tuxedo shirt that melts into draped jersey. Or suit pants that slit upen to reveal another trouser.

Spring was designed in sheer delight. Whether crochet or clear like water, we see through next spring, and so will you.

Let the leg out. While we're still loving the maxi, they're being steered in a sexier route. Thigh high slits make the floor length look thankfully less austere.

"Florals in spring. Groundbreaking." Exactly why we're so surprised it was so strong for Spring 2012. But it was positively everywhere. The trend forecasters must have predicted rain, because designers listened. That or they all independently decided that now is the time for a communal bloom. Floral or not, it's all about the pattern mash. Loud and proud, ladies.

There’s a definite consensus around the FashionIndie office regarding this season at the tents: lackluster. Gone was the excitement and the thrill of the new and in its stead stood a circus comprised of the old guard impatiently appraising the crop of would-be streetstyle stars and the army of bloggers hanging about as they waded through the muck of the nameless and the irrelevant to find a collection onto which to pin their ever-dwindling hopes . Still, there were a few shows that set the five barely-beating hearts of FashionIndie racing and had our backs aching to be clothed in their bright and bold designs.

Designers Drawing on a Flowering Spring

I smell a trend that’s coming up daisies. Illustrated florals have gone sketchy and have hit several runways before day three. Luca Luca, Cynthia Rowley, Doo.Ri and Duckie Brown have turned up the flower power for boys and girls to shower over Spring 2012.

Doo.Ri has taken lady-menswear to a very sleek place. The effect harks back to ancient Greece and the nature of drape as it adds softness to the harsh lines of les hommes.

Color palette: Black, white and neutral growing to rich art deco purples and yellows witgh a spot of illustrated pastel florals.
Mood: Black tied man meets ancient Greek goddess.
Statement Pieces: She’s fused the tuxedo shirting with volumes of jersey that flow like water in betwixt the wovens. It is the piece I want to take home with me now.
Front Row Name Drops: Vogue European Editor-at-Large, Hamish Bowles among top buyers from Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf’s and more.
Gossip: Snubbed by the Naked Cowboy who made an appearance last year.
Runway Music: A fiddling melangé.

RUNWAY: Doo.Ri Fall 2010 Womenswear

Doo.Ri Fall 2010 was a bit of a disappointment in comparison to previous collections. Doo-Ri Chung started off strong with two gorgeous navy structural pieces (a suit and belted dress) with draped black netting detail. But things went awry when Chung dabbled with bright red, sequins and several musky patterns. Interspersed with a few good looks, namely the rust leather jacket and draped silk dress, the collection had a few memorable pieces, but generally speaking, Chung was a bit off this season.

A new trend seen online is changing your accessories to make them something “new” and “unique” with just a little paint, beads, or other embellishment.

Doe Deere of Lime Crime showed how she painted the bottom of her pumps bright, baby blue here—and also referred us to others online who are using their creativity on accessories.

Like these tights that were inspired by the ones this blogger saw Doo.Ri’s fall 2009 collection.

I love DIY fashion and this goes to show that with a little bit of imagination and opening your craft supply box, you can create something pretty cool and even imitate what designers are doing, without the cost.

Doo-Ri Chung used her Pre-Fall 2010 collection as a practice run for the Fall, playing around with prints prints, silhouettes and the everlasting “no no” combination of black and bold royal blue. The Lookbook really doesn’t do the collection justice, hiding the minute, but oh so necessary details that Doo.Ri is known for.

Any designer who gathers inspiration from metal for a collection has my support. Doing just that was Doo-ri Chung with her girly, but edgy, collection in primarily gray fabrics. While a plethora of chains and a leather vest were the only elements of hardcore girl, tops had so much detailing that “hardcore” is simply implied. The Doo.ri collection really speaks for itself and would probably be hindered by further accessories, rather than helped. Loving the gray lipstick too!

One of our favorite mainstream heading indies presented a Resort collection that featured loose fitting cargos that upheld an urban sophistication. We’re in love with the looks for how effortless they are. And the scarf is a great add on without making me think of Palestine.
