As my sister discovered at her first (and forever) Coachella, the three things you need to happily survive are: Good shoes. Water. Fairy dust (…you know). Rageable, danceable, breathable shoes are key to outdoor concert comfort. Nothing can kill your buzz quite like thinking about your slipping, blistering feet (gross). These are all happy feet approved.

NO flip flops (there could be mud). Always break your shoes in first. If the shoes are slightly blister-inducing, bandage ahead of time. Be sure you can stand and dance all day and night in them. You should smile when you look down at them.

People Are Protesting…Something, but More Importantly: What Are They Wearing?

The New York Times Style section continues its look at hard-hitting news with their coverage of the protests going on downtown and just how the righteously indignant dress these days.

On Wall Street, people are upset that America’s a big money-grabbing capitalist and that the assholes on Wall Street are assholes, so they’re staging a good ole-fashioned “occupation”: the “Occupy Wall Street” protesters “occupy” Zuccotti Park, whic they have been “occupying” since Sept. 17th.

Flannel and Doc Martens, unsurprisingly, are very popular, as is a wanton disregard for good grooming. However, one protester interviewed deeply considered the various factors of her environment and situation before getting dressed: “I’m wearing heels and they’re really comfortable. I kind of didn’t plan to be protesting. I mean what’s a protest outfit? Like in case you get maced or arrested? You have to think about the elements and the forces that come up against you. The pencil skirt is vintage I got at a thrift store. My gauzy shirt I just got the other day and I’ve worn it maybe four times already. The sunglasses are Michael Kors.”

Thank you! Someone knows how to dress for an act of nonviolent disapprobation; and when in doubt — designer.

Meanwhile, in Foley Square,the younger generation can take a cue from the older and wiser rabble-rousers that came before them. “My black velvet jacket is from J. Jill,” said 68-year-old retiree, Judith Carluccio. “My jeans, I’m not sure where they’re from. And I have on sneakers so I can run. In case the cops come, I’m ready to go.”

First Coachella Dream with Dr Martens and his Prescriptions

In a fantastical dream last night, I was skipping through hot fields packed with wildly garbed people and hula hoops. Ahead of me, The Black Keys were electrifying “Everlasting Light” on a massive stage, and behind me there was a great deal of foofaraw; including a giant glowing structure built of egg cartons and, oddly enough, each of my head scarves. I was floating, lighter than air, and every time I looked down at my feet, I was wearing a different pair of Dr. Martens. Metallic high tops! Purple polka dot creepers! Impressionist floral combat boots! And each time the Docs made a switch, The Sartorialist, Scott Schumann, snapped a picture of me. Meanwhile Garance Doré was across the field with 3 trailer trucks and a bevy of models, lighting, and incidentally, glow sticks, whilst she directed a photo shoot. When I turned back, The Black Keys had stopped, and the president of Dr. Martens takes the mic to welcome us all to Coachella 2012.

There can only be one explanation for such a dream….
