Designing for Anne Klein before establishing her own label more than 20 years ago, the Queen of Seventh Avenue knows a thing or two about what a dress can do. A dress can make a statement in its own right, but it can also work as a strong base to create a whole look that’s all your own. Cheap and cheerful dresses from New Look can work just as well as the latest DKNY must-haves; the price isn’t important, it’s the way you wear it that counts.

I will say, it’s refreshing to see a boob on the runway that doesn’t belong to a model. It seems in the past couple of years, and grossly intensifying last year, models have been clothed for the runway with nothing covering the breastesses. Whether it’s sheer, a loose knit, or nothing these looks are leaving models’ tits out for the world to see.

Congratulations to Gianni Moralo for putting himself on the map with this Fishlike Alien with a Literal Boob in the Center. Now he needs a bride who wants/is dealing with a uniboob.

*Gianni Moralo is not, nor ever was a comedian. Though I might not know, I don’t speak Italian. This is just hilarious.

Tomorrow, Friday August 20, Gilt Groupe, the invitation-only online (here’s an invite)shopping phenomenon, will host an exclusive Target Designer Sale beginning at 12pm EST and lasting through the weekend.

Prior to availability in Target stores and on Target.com this fall, the virtual pop-up store will offer limited quantities of select styles from three upcoming Target limited-time-only Designer for Target collections, including Tucker for Target (women’s apparel), Mulberry for Target (handbags) and John Derian for Target (home décor).

Alexander Wang's shoes and accessories are on our list of must haves for Fall 2010.  While creating our wish list of “gotta have it now” items on his website, we perused his T by Alexander Wang collection and fell in love with his Classic Long Sleeve Maxi Dress.  

The baggy fit and scoop neck is flattering but curvy women be warned, the dress can be unforgiving.  It comes in three different colors and we're itching for all three.  The dress is ultra lightweight and semi sheer, which makes it perfect for layering for fall. The dress available at Net-A-Porter, as well as Wang’s website for $105.

In a world of celebrity worship and red-carpet obsession, it’s easy to forget that for most women a wedding, bar mitzvah or the prom is as dressed up as it gets. And those occasions, while special, don’t necessarily inspire the average attendee to shell out four figures for designer eveningwear — even if she has it. So how much are such women willing to pay for a one- or two-night-only dress?

All of the gowns featured in this story retail for $600 or less — not cheap but, at a fraction of designer prices, they fall into what many industry types deem “the sweet spot” between $300 and $800, where style and value converge. “Women are so intelligent and smart today. This dress retails for $490, but if it doesn’t look good and it costs $2,000, they’re still not going to buy it for $490,” says Kay Unger, noting that the dress pictured (see page 7), from her resort 2011 collection, has 11 tiers of silk organza and charmeuse. Her point is that customers want the runway and red-carpet trends but without a four-figure price tag.

That’s something that A.B.S. by Allen Schwartz has down to a science for the prom, black-tie and, increasingly, bridesmaid sets. “Retailers don’t really want us to be above the $500 mark,” says Lloyd Singer, president of sales for A.B.S. The key to hitting that price is volume and production. A.B.S. is manufactured domestically, but the majority of houses with prices in that ballpark outsource to Asia. Unger falls into that category, as does Sue Wong, who bills herself as “the everywoman couturier.”

“When the average woman out there opens up a Vogue, Harper’s or Elle and you have Valentino at $2,500 and Chanel at $3,000, it’s not realistic,” says Wong, whose prices average between $300 and $600. “They think that it’s a total fantasy for them, that only A-listers like J.Lo or Nicole Kidman get to wear it.” Wong doesn’t own her own factories in Asia but acts as her own agent, thus “eliminating the middle man so there’s no further markup. The customer loves me for it.”

Of course, there is a divide between what a few hundred and a few thousand dollars buys. “There are fabric and detail and finishes that are different between a $5,000 gown and an $800 gown,” says Joe Boitano, Saks Inc. group senior vice president and general merchandise manager, noting that the $400-to-$800 dress range has become a dominant business for Saks. “There’s never going to be the same detail and quality but there is a lot of value in the $800 or $600 dress.”

Neutral or flesh-toned dresses and tops are huge this season, but the trend is not a slam-dunk one – it can be easily messed up. Case in point: Kristen Bell’s potato sack-like, square “hoop dress” (what was Stella McCartney thinking?). We broke it down here:

We just want to rip that shapeless bag off – it does nothing for her petite, toned frame.

When wearing a flesh-colored dress, think of it as an extension of your body shape. Accent (not muffle) your best parts.

(The strappy shoes are actually a great neutral shoe choice.)

What she should have done:

1. Find a dress with a geometric pattern that makes the neutral more body-con.

Finding a dress with geometric shapes or accents like this Arden B Slash Stripe Bandage dress ($69) makes the neutral look more modern, edgy and sleek.

2. Find a dress with black accents for a more polished look:

One of our favorite color combinations is neutral and black – this is a great way to wear the trend. Try this MM Couture by Miss Me Geo-Print dress ($89) for an impressive look.

3. Always go body-con over shapeless and ill-fitting.

Always choose fitted over loose-fitting with neutrals; the look is almost supposed to be futuristic and modern. Nail it with this super sexy Pleasure Doing Business Sweetheart dress ($286) – its like the Herve Leger tape dress for a fraction of the cost.

Mas aí Tio Google vem com a má notícia que o vestido é Lanvin. E, obviamente, só se eu vender um rim que ele será meu. Esse é o problema com celebridades que normalmente se vestem mal mas são bonitas / quirky / laid back cool como a Gyllenhaal: a expectativa é sempre baixa e quando elas realmente acertam, o impacto é tanto que só pode dar amor. Lindo, perfeito amor. Como eu amo esse vestido… E devo mencionar que a sandália sem salto só me fez amar ainda mais.

I saw this picture of Maggie Gyllenhaal on the internet and for a few seconds I wished really hard that the dress was made by one of those “expensive yet affordable” brands – if I stop eating for a couple of months. But then Uncle Google brings me the *wonderful* news that the dress was made by Lanvin – and only if I sell a kidney I’d be able to afford that. I guess that’s the problem with celebs like Maggie Gyllenhaal, :who are pretty / quirky / laid back cool and yet don’t know how to dress properly most times: expectations are so low that when they come out dressed like that the impact is such that the only result is love. The most beautiful love. And oh god, how much I love this dress… And I have to add that the flat sandals only made me love it more.

One of my close friends Paulina came to visit from San Diego last weekend. Paulina happens to be a photographer and she was kind enough to shoot some pictures of me during her stay. I showed her around the city and we shot where ever we pleased. There was lots of dressing up, changing outfits and overall I think we both had a blast. You’ll see some random pics in this post but I find them all to be worth showing. As you can see we were pretty much relocating all day long. As far as my outfit here, I’ve meant to show you this dress for a while now. It’s a summer dress by Marc by Marc Jacobs that I bought at Jeremy’s. They usually run lots of designer sales and if you get on their email list and stop by on their sales days I bet you’ll score some goodies. Seattle designer Luly Yang has released the ultimate showpiece. Head down to Yang’s shop window in Seattle to catch a glimpse of the monarch butterfly dress. Here there is my travel tip number 2: Paris! I’ve spent a big part of last year in this amazing city, since my boyfriend had studied for a semester there… I am totally in love with it and I suggest everyone of you to go!

DRESS CODE: sober, elegant, extremely chic!

WHERE TO EAT: try Le Bonnes Soeurs (8 Rue du Pas de la Mule) for a lovely dinner and Kong (1 Rue du Pont Neuf) for the happy hour with the best view of Paris!

WHERE TO STAY: Mama Shelter Hotel (109 rue de Bagnolet) A new high -designed cheap chic hotel by Philippe Starck, where you can have the best technology, art, food for a very little price.

DON’T MISS: Colette (213 Rue Saint-Honoré) the famous concept store where you find almost anything and walk through Le Marais, the most indie and fashionable area of Paris, at least according to me.

I have an affinity for the color red. Red shoes, red bags, red lipstick and most importantly the red dress. Red is the power color that looks good on most people.  It's a shame that many women are scared to wear this color in fear of being labeled a tramp.  I came across a red strapless gown by Brian Reyes that stopped me dead in my tracks.  The sculpted silk maxi dress is a modern take on the Pretty Woman dress.  The corset-style cup, asymmetrical flounce hem and tonal piping at the seams are sexy but sophisticated at the same time.  The Brian Reyes Corset Strapless Gown is for the twenty-something or thirty-something woman who wants to have fun turning heads at a gala or evening affair.

You need confidence to wear such a statement making dress.  When wearing a dress like this you have to be mindful of a few things:

• Less is more so keep accessories to a minimum. Chandelier earrings or a statement necklace, not both.
• Red goes with both gold and silver. Make sure you choose the tone that works best with your complexion.
• Keep the hair pulled back in a chic updo or go Cali girl chic with a low ponytail.  Opting for voluminous curls or waves will be total overkill.
• Your makeup should compliment the dress. Go for nude lips with a smoky eye or neutral eyes with a bit of shimmer and a berry lip.
• Shapewear is your best friend so embrace it. A strapless toning slip or DKNY smoothies will be the key to smoothing those problem areas.
