Decadence is synonymous with the holidays (and no, it’s not too early to start thinking about the December holidays!). From trees covered in lights, tinsel, and baubles to dinner spreads so huge you end up eating the remainders as leftover’s until the New Year, this time of year is about going all out– and fashion is no exception. ‘Tis the season to get dressed up and this year designers have not held back; think glitz, glamour, shimmer and shine. Metallic bodycon dresses

Metallics are absolutely everywhere this season. From shoes to scarves and everything in between fashion has come over very futuristic. Shimmering silvers and golds, sequins and embellishment take your dress from drab to fab. Ramp it up even further with a bodycon dress; this will definitely get you noticed.

How to wear?

Styling details to keep you on point can include one-shoulder straps, studding and embellishment as well as bust cups and contrasting metallic belts. Lacy LBDs

The little black dress never fails to impress, but this season you need to spruce it up a little if you want to compete with all those shimmering metallic-clad ladies. The only way to do that this season is with lace, and plenty of it. Whether bodycon, shift, a-line or skater, lace adds a sultry, sexy touch to an otherwise average black dress.

How to wear?

Bright, bold, asymmetric dresses

The colour block trend from the summer is reinvented with richer, autumnal hues such as burgundy, plum, mustard and emerald green.

Corsages, Grecian-style drapes and pleats all add glamour and style and give a nod to the disco fashions of the 1970s. One of the biggest trends of the season is the return of the wide leg pant and the floor sweeping dress. Beautiful for silhouettes, terrible for petites. We sought out the advice of Harper’s Bazaar editor in chief Glenda Bailey for tips on how short girls can master the long look. She even tells us a bit about her shoe preference of the moment. SL: The wide legged trousers! The long skirts! These beautiful trends are finally back, but I’m barely breaching 5 feet tall and often look completely overwhelmed. What is a girl to do?

GB: Keep it tonal. Wear long wisely. As soon as you start to break up the silhouette, it can be really difficult. There’s nothing sweeter than a girl in a gorgeous long skirt with a simple fitted top, like Lanvin showed, or a summer sun dress with flat shoes. Come winter, it can look a bit like you are dusting the floor with your skirt and I think I would just advise caution in how you wear it. For example, my team are wearing very slim silhouettes with wedge shoes that anchor the look to the ground.

SL: We also try to hide our short stature by wearing giant shoes. What do you think about the new flat-platform look?

GB: My girls are already wearing it. It is a new way of moving on from the wedge. I have huge samurong wedges which i’ve been wearing a lot but i’m feeling for a daintier shoe. I like to run so i kind of welcome the idea of having a more refined, elegant heel seems so right for right now.

Creative Inspiration: Dress A Day

A coworker of mine (shout out to Caryn!) tipped me to the blog New Dress A Day. Basically, poor Marisa hit 30 and lost her job around the same time, and felt like she was in a rut, but instead of sitting around feeling sorry for herself, she came up with a plan. Inspired by the movie Julie and Julia, she decided she would create one new dress every day for a year. Each dress would be created from garments found at flea markets, vintage shops,and garage sales. Her budget? $1 per day. That’s it. No other clothes shopping than that for an entire year.

This dress was inspired from a dress worn by Blair on Gossip Girl (see below)

Marisa’s blog is a day by day chronicling of each dress, (or, on occasion shirt) depicting the garment in its original state, and then the new dress she made from it. She also includes a description of how she got from point A to point B and oftentimes a real world example of her inspiration.

I find her whole endeavor very inspiring, and am really impressed with her creativity and commitment. She is already up to day 240, and really seems to be having a blast with the project. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if at the end of all this she ends up with great opportunities to make money doing the thing she loves. What do you think? Crazy? Inspired? Or both?

Anya Ponorovskaya- Fashion On Elizabeth Street

I love NYC's Elizabeth Street and not just because of Le Labo. It's full of indie designers and retro stores and I always manage to find something special to wear. Last weekend it was a gorgeous dress by Anya Ponorovskaya. The tiny boutique feels like Wonderland for those of us who likes exquisitely cut feminine dresses. There's a vintage vibe there, but Ponorovskaya's designs are timeless and very sexy and the fabrics- cotton and silk- are modern and crisp.

There are also shoes and accessories, but it were the dresses that mesmerized me. They are so well-made and have no other purpose than to make you feel pretty. The dress I got has a similar shape to the one above, but is made of a lace overlay and a red silk slip. It's figure-friendly and made me feel like I just stepped out of the Mad Men set.

Just call me Joannie.

Anya Ponorovskaya has four boutiques- the one on 235 Elizabeth street as well as a bridal store on 167 Elizabeth (there's a gorgeous white version of my dress), and two other locations: in Brooklyn and in Miami. If you're in the area, check out Caffe Falai on 265 Lafayette Street. It’s a great Italian place, as authentic as they come. I love their poached pigs with ricotta cheese and their crepe cake is dreamy- layers of thin delicate crepes with perfect creme patissier. Seriously- don’t miss the desserts.

I know dripping paint designs are kind of old news now, but still I love the look. I particularly like the simple, yet bold black and white print on this dress by Insight, and it looks super comfy too! The only problem is I’m not sure if it has enough shape to look flattering on my curvier figure (I always take it as a warning sign when the model has her hands on her hips, effectively cinching in the waist), and I think adding a belt might take away from the drama of the print. Shao-Yen Chen is a London based knits designer born in Taiwan. Although a fresh graduate of the Masters Program of Fashion at the prestigious school of Central Saint Martins, he already has internships at Alexander McQueen, Hussein Chalayan and Claire Tough under his belt. His graduation collection – Waver is what brings us here. Creating unexpected silhouettes and volume with only nylon strings, synthetic yarns, cashmere and lycra, it’s no wonder his collection was chosen to participate in London Fashion Week A/W 2010. The collection was “inspired by natural landscapes and seascapes” tells Shao-Yen Chen, and indeed, the shape and movement of the dresses remind that of whitecap waves roaming a rocky shore.

Let’s face it, the maxi isn’t going away. Believe me when I say it has just began.
Since ever, the maxi has been a must for black tie events. A lot of beachwear kaftans and coverups are maxis as well. But how can it translate into our everyday life? I don’t see it blend in well into an office look – unless you’re a fashion magazine editor, perhaps you can try a tailored maxi skirt. Still, for a day out, a weekend, or a dinner party – the maxi dress is your friend.
Alright, so you’ve decided to go for it, but what color should you choose? What style? The big volume of maxi dresses we see on the streets and in the stores today are either in loud tacky prints, white or black. So … banal. Nude color, on the right fabric, will make the outfit look chic and will get you all the right attention. This fact alone turns a simple maxi dress into a statement piece.

This was my July 4th outfit. Since it was hot as Hades, I wore the most ventilated, yet still adult party-appropriate dress I own. I’ve worn it for about a zillion weddings.

Usually, you couldn’t pay me enough money to brave the crowds on the Mall to see the fireworks, but B and I were lucky enough to be invited to a party with the most incredible view, so who am I to say no?

No room for the big camera, so we brought along the little Powershot. I was actually quite impressed with the nighttime photos.

Style Icon & Legendary Designer: Norma Kamali

When I think about designer extraordinaire, Norma Kamali, swimsuits are the last things that come to mind. While those designs are very much a part of her vast compilations, it’s the clothes that I love. Specifically those designs such as the cutout dress below and that parachute skirt that she’s wearing. I shouldn’t forget to mention that there are also some fabulous vintage pieces floating around out there as well. While Not as heralded as some of today’s more popular designers, she has certainly earned her place among fashion’s elite. I believe that it was the latter 90′s, when her first collection of dresses made from parachutes debuted. For me, it was love at first sight! I didn’t realize that there could be so many variations of one look, until I visited her website…both the dresses and skirts are simply dazzling! I also count her among my “favorite ladies of style,” as is evident by the picture featured. She’s been photographed wearing that necklace and earrings on more than one occasion, and I would love to know where she found them. I can only imagine, that she purchased them from an open bazaar while visiting some chic travel destination….at least that’s what I’d like to think. Whether designing for Wal-Mart or adding her to her own collections, she will always have a fan in me!

How to Find the Best Red Dress for You – Coloring, Body Type, Event

So you’ve decided that for that special occasion you’re looking for the perfect red dress. Good choice! Red has so many variations and
shades, and with the right assistance, is a stunning color on just about
everyone. There is a red hue out there no matter your shade, undertone
or coloring.

There are also red dresses with all sorts of draping and cuts that flatter a variety of body types, and of course where you’re
going to be wearing the dress has a lot to do with the type of red dress
you will buy.

Whether you wear a red dress every day or you have hesitated to do so in the past because you thought it wouldn’t flatter
you, just keep reading. By the time you’re done, you’ll pick the most
flattering red dress ever, feel great about how you look in it, and grab
more admiring looks than you would have ever imagined.

This article will help you find the right dress for you shade, shape and
event.

The first thing you need to do is: Determine your undertone

Stand next to a natural source of light, and hold a piece of blank white paper underneath your hand. What tone in the most
prominent? What secondary color do you notice? Remember you’re not
looking at your color, but the hue that you notice despite or in
addition to your coloring.

I’ll give you an example. When I do this test, my undertone is Red, and my secondary color is yellow. This
means that I have a warm undertone, and that rich true reds, along with
reds that have a pink or orange tone suit my skin best. Now this isn’t
to say that a red with a blue undertone wouldn’t look good on me, but
for the best red dress, choosing one that compliments my complexion will
help me to look my best.

With this in mind I would choose a warm shade of red which would help my skin to glow.

But the color of the dress isn’t the only thing one has to think about when buying a red
dress.

The second thing your need to do is: Determine your shape

You also have to consider your shape. There are four basic shapes that are used for women. Apple, Pear, Hourglass and Tube
(Banana). Most people, whether they realize it or not, fall into the
Tube category. This isn’t a bad thing, in fact it’s quite easy to find
something that works with this shape, so quite often Tube or Banana
shapes have the most choices when it comes to finding a red dress.

Apple shaped women are broader up top than they are on the bottom.

Pear shaped women are broader on the bottom than they are the top.

Hourglass shaped women have a lower and upper half that are nearly equal in size
with a visibly small waist in comparison to their hips and buttocks.

Banana or Tube shaped women have minimal hip to waist ratios, in other words
though you can tell that they have a waist it’s not as obvious as it
would be with someone hour glass shaped.

Have you determined your shape? Good. Now your have two of the things you need in order to choose
the best red dress for you.

How a dress fits your shape, has to do with the fabric, drape and cut of the dress.

If you are Banana or Hourglass shape, you have an advantage of being fairly proportional,
so wearing a dress that clings to your shape can actually look nice
depending on the shape you’re in. This is key. Clingy outfits will
highlight and accentuate your body, so the point is, highlight your good
point.

If you have a nice bust line, than you might want to consider something that is clingy up top, but looser on the bottom.

If you’re a banana shape and you wear something clingy, consider wearing a
belt in a complimenting color 6cm or wider to give yourself the effect
of a curve.

For an Apple shape, you’ll be looking for something that gives your figure a more proportional look. Choosing something that
has a broader bottom (think layers) will make your bottom half a bit
fuller, thus matching your top half.

For a Pear shape, you’re trying to do the opposite of an Apple shape. You want your top to be
more proportional to your bottom. Choosing a dress with padding in the
bust, along with decoration up top, will help to create a fuller look in
the torso, bringing both your bottom and top half in line.

The third thing your need to do is: Determine your event

Are you going to a morning wedding, a party at a club in Ibiza, a formal evening
wedding, a corner office, a casual get together with friends? Let’s
break events down into 7 categories.

1. Casual
2. Semi-Casual

3. Office

4. Semi-Formal

5. Formal

6. Cocktail Party

7. Dancing

Once you’ve determined the type of event you are attending is, you can start looking at the best red dress for the
occasion.

For categories 1 and 2, you can get away with both very long (i.e. Maxi Dresses) and shorter than normal (mini or in the case of
casual micro mini).

For category 3, knee length through calf length is your best bet.

For categories 4 slightly above knee length through calf length will suit the occasion well.

For category 5 Ankle to Floor length is best.

For category 6 a couple of inches above the knee to knee length is the most common.

For category 7 your options are more open, but for your red dress to fit in
the with occasion a somewhat flair micro mini to knee length will give
you room for dancing, and hopefully a sense of flirty fun that will help
you enjoy the occasion.

"After Five"

I remember a time in “fashion vernacular,” when the cocktail dress and anything closely related, was referred to as an “after five.” Whenever I think of the seventies, I’m reminded of a particular sister-in-law who I heard speak those two words quite often. She was that stylish type of woman who was taken with chiffon minis, the “page boy” hair cut and on occasion, the bouffant, which was my personal favorite. That was a time when wigs and hairpieces were all the rage….that big cluster of curls that was pinned atop when one really chose to pull out all the stops. While we don’t hear those words uttered much anymore, there are and will always be those gorgeous pieces which “light up the night.”

Of all the dresses, Alexander Mcqueen's is my favorite, and apparently a favorite among many, as it's currently sold out. I'm also lovin the Sass & Bide jumpsuit….I'm always taken with those pieces that look good with flats or heels.

Everyone who watched the movie has to admit that the four women are gorgeous and sexy in their dresses. Every time these actresses appear on the screen, I was greatly impressed by their individual styles. You have to admit, they seem fabulous in their dresses, especially when Carrier and her three girl friends go on a vocation to the desert.

As four adult women and some of them already mothers, they are not young any longer. People tend to believe that the younger the movie stars especially the female stars are, the more popular they will become. But after watching the movie, I believe most of the audience will like the four adult women, though each of them has their own shortcomings. But no one is perfect, is it? In fact, I’d like to say that these women are fabulous not because they are wearing gorgeous dresses, but because they are confident and positive in their deep heart. As four women who love life so deep in their heart, it is not strange at all that these adult women look so fabulous and gorgeous to the audience.

In this sense, Sex and the City 2 is more than a fabulous fashion show. It shows that women want to be impressive to others, appearance is important. Loving the life you live with is more important than that.

Yesterday afternoon, my freind Audrey Nizen (Creative Director, Bloomingdale’s) and I were lamenting on how stylists have ruined the creativity at awards shows by playing it all too safe. Last night however, there was safety in numbers, and all of which hit the recurring theme of Hootchie Mamma.

In an effort to conceal her ankle thing, Lindsay Lohan channelled Mrs. Roper from Three's Company.

These two Jeresey Shore-ites, JWoww and Snooki set the tone for Hootchie Mamma.

Katy Perry's hair rocks but her dresses were cha-cha at best.

This Katy Perry number is Vegas showgirl or Ice Capades…you choose.

Sandra Bullock looked amazing in her backless number, but really, she could have added one inch to the length. Girl, you are in your 40's…relax. You're still America's sweetheart.

Evan Mendez channelled Wilma Flintstone and (B) I am realy over the one shoulder story.

As in this case with Stephnie Pratt who was sporting a wanna-be Stephen Sprouse moment.

Audrina Patridge proves my point…that one shoulder needs another.

This ill fitting coral David's Bridal Bridesmaid dress did nothing for Lauren Bosworth besides get her on the worst dress list.

Nikki Reed wore a schmatta that looked like a Woolworth's House Coat from the 60's…and not in a good way.

Samantha Harris also needed another inch on the length. Come on girl…you're pusing 40…no?

Christina Aguilera…fotz.

Snooki is hilare…but white wakes you look wider, so she looked as wide as she is tall. She definitely needed the Snooki hair bump to give her the height.

All the single ladies…all the single ladies. Skank patrol.

It’s that time of year again when flowers blossom and little birdies hatch… oh yeah, and everybody gets married!! Rent The Runway has a whole category devoted to weddings to help make your life easier, especially on you wallet.

I have two back to back weddings approaching, one of which is this weekend. I actually should be packing right now, but I can’t even begin to bother with that. Chat with a stylist. They’ll help you navigate the site, find the perfect size, and tip you off to new arrivals.

I heard about the online boutique IDontLikeMondays.us from a couple of socialites/ clothing designers featured in Elle and Vogue magazines declaring that it’s a great place to find original and upscale looks. I just had to log on and browse, and thankfully discovered this unique Maurie & Eve white dress with edgy details.

My look is rock n’ roll hot mess done in a classic neutral palette, and this frock would certainly be suited for sipping cocktails. However, I would dare to wear it with a pair of black Old Navy flip flops to grab a panini for brunch. It’s that wearable. $162 isn’t too much to ask for such a dependable garment.

I’ve been browsing for a dress to wear to a wedding in July (I know I have time, but I like to think ahead), and a lot of options out there seem like the same old, same old. A lot of you out there might have a similar event coming up. This dress by Myne has interesting and flattering cut-outs and a really adorable print.
