Nighttime shopping has grown in popularity, with order volumes peaking around 8 pm and the number of orders between 9 pm and midnight increasing from previous years. On eBay, the busiest time of day is between 6:30 pm and 10:30 pm, when the customer is allegedly in a “good mood” (read: has had a few).  Gilte Group has added more sales beginning at 9 pm in response to higher traffic while retailers such as Neiman Marcus, Loews and Saks inundate customers’ email inboxes with special offers and deals throughout the night and into the early morning.

It speaks to logic that people are less tight with the purse strings after they’ve tied one on; when that sequined jumpsuit you’ve been eyeing for the past month or so suddenly seems like a life or death purchase and you just say “to hell with it” and add it to your cart. The article is quick to point out that drunk shopping in stores is more rare than online, but speaking from personal experience, there’s nothing better than walking into an H&M with a cocktail in hand and daring the salesgirl to say something to you. And on the rare occasion they do, that’s when you throw both a violent tantrum and your drink in their insolent faces. [NYT]

Rumors are that Jenny from the block is quietly selling all the jewelry and designer clothes given to her from her previous marriage to singer Marc Anthony. Some say she’s even keeping it classy by selling some on eBay. According to the Chicago Sun-Times “He gave her quite a lot.”

Versace for H&M proved a retail juggernaut with lines wrapped around H&Ms around the world, the H&M website pulling a Target website and crashing last Thursday — it’s not up as of this post’s publication, FYI —  and items flying off the rack in minutes.  With an online-only collection, at least one can avoid the shoving and the pushing and the elbowing of overzealous shoppers — sorry, by the way, to that little girl I elbowed in the eye last Friday but there was a bustier with my editor’s name on it.  [WWD]

Wu’s diffusion line will not be as massive as the Missoni juggernaut, which featured some 400 pieces including clothes, home furnishings and — why not — a bike. Rather, Wu’s collaboration  is part of Target’s Go International program and will consist of only apparel and accessories, in the similar vein of past Go International designers Rodarte, Zac Posen and Thakoon.

For his part, Wu seemed to really enjoy teaming up with the mass retailer:

“The exciting thing about this limited edition collection of affordable women’s wear and accessories is that it allows me to reach a wider audience and bring my designs to people who may not have been able to purchase them before. My collection for Target is chic and wearable. I think women everywhere will enjoy it.”

A heaping helping of shade was thrown all over the interwebs from disgruntled customers wanting to get their clutches on the one-off collection with many blaming Target’slack of preparation for the feverish rush. The line was made available at 6 a.m. on Tuesday and by 7:47 am the homepage was down. Thirteen minutes later, Target put up a courtesy page claiming the problem was being worked on.

Though Target switched from Amazon.com‘s backend to their own platform, the #fail was mostly attributed to the Missoni fever built up over the last few months. Vogue featured  the line in its August issue — with New York Times writer Stephanie Clifford astutely pointing out that that was “perhaps the first and last time that a $30 rug made it into that magazine” — and items at the Missoni for Target pop-up shop sold out in six hours during Fashion’s Night Out. Even alleged celebrities like the Jessicas Simpson and Alba were coveting the pieces.

While the collection will last through October 22nd, over 6,000 items popped up on eBay just some 11 hours after they had initially gone on sale. While all this hubbub and hullabaloo is great for Missoni, Target’s kind of getting its ass handed to them, with words like “amateurish” and “embarrassing” being bandied about. Of course, Target will recover and hopefully learn its lesson and hopefully the masses’ unprecedented demand for discount Missoni will inevitably be satiated. [NYT]

In an effort to expand distribution beyond that of its quickly-failing stores, Charney is trying to capitalize on the some 30,000 monthly searches for AA on eBay by selling directly to the inquisitive customer.

Purchases will be made via eBay’s checkout system while AA will handle the shipping and delivery. In return, American will pay eBay a commission on all sales.

This venture is believed to be “part of a larger upcoming eBay platform for dedicated brand stores,” but eBay’s keeping mum on the subject…which means it probably is. American Apparel on the other hand wants you to know they’re not going anywhere.

With talks to open up to four leased spaces in Bloomingdale’s, leased spaces already opening up in three Selfridges across the pond as well as a pending deal to provide apparel to 2500 campus stores nationwide, you’ll have no problem finding your fill of  high-waisted jeans, sheer bodysuits and crotchless what-have-yous. The fragrance itself, described as “the ultimate connoisseur’s scent”, was a concoction of pepper, grapefruit, lavender, vanilla, and patchouli (aka light, cool, and a little intimidating).  Former NY Times Scent Editor Chandler Burr walked us through each individual scent in a fun and compelling sniff class that broke it all down.

More exciting news at the event was the launch of Dolce & Gabbana’s new iPhone app, “Rules for the Modern Gentlman” which was written by Dylan Jones, editor of GQ UK.  The app was designed to cover tips on etiquette (like asking a girl on a date properly), style & grooming (like how to match your patterns), and quick solutions for gentlemanly predicaments (sort of like the how to eat a pork loin off a rib without disturbing the passed appetizers peace).  Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana told us, “The application is a perfect reflection of the scenarios that the Dolce&Gabbana man may find himself encountering; as a modern gentleman he can approach each situation with a sense of poise and confidence that distinguishes him from the rest.”

When looking for the campaign’s face, naturally, the brand turned to Hollywood ladies man: Matthew McConaughey.  The campaign video showed off McConaughey, the one gentleman himself, the morning after an epic celebration (very a la How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days). Still tuxedo clad, he strolls through the party ballroom doing exactly what we would all do after a grand night at a ball, staring into a beach sunset.  How dapper. We recommend the scent for the young and elegant set, the gentlemen of our generation.

- Alexander Wang is following up his recent win at the CFDAs for Accessory Designer of the Year by taking the classy route: eBay. His new line of small leather goods will be available via auction, rather brilliantly, for 24 hours this Friday the 17th. [Fashionologie]

The Louis Vuitton ad took Wisniak and her deputy, Eleonore Therond, a full year to create. It features a lost polar bear on an adventure with a monogrammed Louis Vuitton trunk. He embarks through the tundra with it; clings to it like a buoy in frigid waters, eventually finds shelter on a boat bound for civilization—and then, trunk in hand, crashes onto the stage of a lecture given by Al Gore on the perils of global warming.

A true rarity in fashion, in publishing and just in the pace of the modern world, Egoïste has become a collector’s item with the December 1977 issue featuring Mick Jagger recently selling on eBay for $1,100. And appropriately, you won’t find Egoïste hanging around on a shelf at Barnes and Noble; the only retailer in America that carries the mag is New York’s Rizzoli Bookstore.

Perhaps one day Keira Knightely’s cover will fetch a similar price tag. The actress and occasional Chanel cyclist may seem an odd choice considering the iconoclastic cover stars before her, but for Wisniak, it’s not about being current or on trend: “It’s about lasting. Even Ebay’s sales of holiday sweaters are up 24 percent from last year. But you’d better get yours early next year. Stores like Buffalo Exchange in the East Village sold out of the novelty knits super quickly this year, leaving many sweater-less for kitschy Christmas parties.

“At this point, I’ve given up,” says Eric Foster, a 27-year old production coordinator from Brooklyn, who had hoped to find a green sweater, preferably involving snowflakes and reindeer, to wear to holiday gatherings this year.

Narcisco’s collection for the auction site eBay will be launching on February 15th. The looks are simple, yet chic. The best piece is definitely the dress on the end with the red color block. The others we’ve seen before and unfortunately, aren’t impressive. Hopefully, eBay steps up their game next time around and actually forces their contributing designers to design and not just give us a rehashing of things we’ve seen a million times before.

Barbie, much like a lot of 50 year olds with money in the bank, has been going through a major make-over. She’s obviously had work done and is now attempting to hit the runway. Demi Moore called, Barbie, she wants her gimmick back.

Apparently, Barbie is all dolled up to celebrate the launch of her Little Black Dress collection and raise a little money for the CFDA scholarship program. She’ll be sporting a couple of exclusive accessories and fashion designs from Isaac Mizrahi, Kate Spade’s Deborah Lloyd, Tory Burch, Rachel Roy and Monica Botkier. The dolls hit eBay on January 28th.

I’m all for lower priced diffusion lines and Target, H+M and Topshop collaborations; I may not be willing to brave the lines and fierce elbowing that it takes to come home with one of these pieces before they sell out but I think they are great for the industry. Taking that into consideration, I should theoretically be %100 behind the idea of this eBay collection. No lines, no pushing, just the simple click of a mouse and the ease of PayPal. Something about this just seems wrong to me, isn’t eBay the internet version of Chinatown? Fake bags everywhere, counterfeit items complete with fake tags and purchasing receipts? Just saying, as a designer this would not be my first go-to collaboration. If you’re thrilled pay attention: the possible eight piece collection would range from $75 to $350. Let the bidding wars begin.

Vintage clothing has always been a bit of a secret passion of mine. Back in the day, when momma Saynt couldn’t afford to get us name brand, we’d shop spots like Salvation Army, Goodwill, and a slew of NYC vintage shops for my wardrobe. Growing up poor gave me a broader appreciation for well made clothes and an undoubting hatred for moths (vile dusty butterflies, if you ask me).

A new, limited-edition recycled denim collection, arriving just in time for the Earth Day fuss, has united Alexander Wang, Bottega Veneta, Derek Lam, Rodarte, Rogan, Stella McCartney, Versace, and Ann Demeulemeester.

Last summer Barney’s New York collected recycled denim, which these top designers have fashioned into outfits. The exclusive designs, now in a window display at Barney’s, will go up for auction on eBay April 30, starting at 99 cents each.  All proceeds will benefit Oceana, “the largest international advocacy organization focused 100 percent on protecting and restoring the world’s oceans.”

ELLE has even chipped in with a David Armstrong-shot editorial in their May 2009 issue.

Project Blue is working on the stat that less than 2% of clothing thrown out in the US is actually worn out. Alternatives, of course, include buying and giving away used clothes, or re-fashioning and re-purposing old clothing, as these featured designers have done.

Thrifting has become/has been a major staple in completing some of the coolest NYC fashions, and if you think about it eBay is the biggest thrift store of them all. Can’t find that vintage YSL jacket you loved back in 2004? Try eBay. I will admit that I haven’t had the time to search through the massive world that is eBay, but the IS MENTAL folks do quite often. In a legal dispute just slightly more glamorous than LVMH’s recent ones with eBay, Sony BMG has agreed to pay Louis Vuitton 100,000 euros, or $155,830. Louis Vuitton got upset with the music giant because they used its Toile Monogram and Multicolore trademarks in music videos and on CDs by Britney Spears, Ruben Studdard, and Da Brat.

For example, in her “Do Something’” video, Britney appears driving through the clouds with her sexy girl entourage* in a pink hummer with a pink dashboard embossed with Louis Vuitton’s signature pattern (which flashes on the screen for literally less than a second).What makes the LVMH legal team seem even more spectacular is they’ve already won $240,000 in the Spears and Da Brat cases over the last five years. These guys are seriously cracking down on copywriting, good for them!!!

We know that the ‘all black’ issue of Italian Vogue was a hit. But does anyone really want to spend $45 on ebay to buy a copy? After it’s initial release, Vogue Italia rushed to reprint 30,000 extra copies for American newsstands, another 10,000 for Britain and 20,000 more in Italy. Now the folks that bought it think they can make bank by reselling them. Why is everything about $?

Hermès International scored a court victory Wednesday against eBay for selling counterfeit luxury goods.

Quoting a judgment from France’s Tribunal de Grande Instance in Troyes, Hermès said eBay, plus the individual seller, had “committed acts of counterfeit” and “prejudice” against it by failing to monitor the authenticity of goods being sold on its Web site.

In a verdict billed as a first in France, it is understood eBay was ordered to pay 20,000 euros, or $31,058 at current exchange, in damages, though Hermès declined to confirm the amount.

In a statement, Hermès said the win marks “an important step in the fight against counterfeiting.”

EBay said it takes counterfeiting seriously and since the Hermès case was brought has put new procedures in place to fight it by more closely scrutinizing sellers.

Europe’s luxury players are becoming increasingly vigilant in the fight against fakes.

As reported, Christian Dior was awarded 150,000 euros, or around $230,000, in damages last April when it won a case against the French budget jewelry chain Camille & Lucie for peddling a style resembling the floral Diorette ring.

Not everyone can be Dr. Cliff Huxtable, the quick-with-a-quip dad that Bill Cosby played on TV for eight years. But for the right price, you could dress just like him this Father’s Day.

Cosby’s daughter, Evin, said her mother and father were cleaning out a closet recently when they came across a batch of the sweaters her dad wore when he played Huxtable on NBC’s The Cosby Show from 1984 to 1992.

“I pounced on these sweaters,” she said Thursday, adding she figured they could help a charity named for her brother, Ennis, raise a substantial amount of money.

Now three of them are going up for sale on eBay, with the proceeds earmarked for the Hello Friend/Ennis William Cosby Foundation.

The nonprofit organization, which raises money to benefit educational programs, is named in honor of Cosby’s only son, who was about to begin his doctoral studies when he was murdered in Los Angeles in 1997.

The auction is scheduled for June 2-12, with minimum bids set at $5,000.

“The price of what some of these sweaters might sell for could make a big difference in the lives of thousands of children,” said Evin Cosby.
