Forever 21 Laughs at Others Misfortunes; Promptly Buys Up Space

On the heels of their recent and very successful Times Square store opening, Forever 21 must be shrugging at American Apparel and Abercrombie & Fitch, saying “What financial trouble?” In fact, reports are coming in that the fast-fashion retailer will soon take over the 94,000 square feet Sak’s Fifth Avenue in Orange County.

Can the ongoing success of stores like Forever 21 and Uniqlo and the failure of American Apparel and A&F be attributed to the economy? Differing financial management? Conservative advertising versus risqué? Who knows? Let’s just sit back and watch the world clothe themselves in jersey dresses.

“We’re making adjustments we’ve never made before,” said Billy Lawson, owner of Shoe Inn, which operates locations in East Hampton and Westhampton. “Our Hamptons stores used to be a way to extend our margins … [but] this year, we opened on Memorial Day with a sale. We [have to compete] with New York prices.”
