In my mind, 2011 will be remembered as the year we lost one of the brightest stars in the vast constellation of pop culture luminaries — one Dame Elizabeth Taylor. Since her passing in March, Taylor’s legacy has loomed large over the fashion world — from an epic editorial homage by Carine Roitfeld to the record-breaking auction of her vast collection of jewels and haute couture. ROGUE Magazine, which is quickly becoming one of my fave mags for the illustrated icon, ends the year on a Liz-loving high note with this tribute by David Downton.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals removed whatever pole they had been sitting on as of late to point it in blame at Janet Jackson, Kim Kardashian and Cameron Crowe. The alliterative trio have earned positions on PETA’s list of “Celebrity Grinches of 2011″ for their unfriendliness towards animals.

Everyone wants a piece of Elizabeth Taylor. Even, “American socialite” — as the Telegraph gingerly describes her – Kim Kardashian, who won out in a bidding war over three Lorraine Schwartz jade bracelets for $62,500 at the second round of the greatest garage sale of all time. Taylor’s couture and assorted jewels brought in $2.6 million, setting a record for a fashion auction.

Leave it to Elizabeth Taylor to go out with a bang worthy of a movie star. The auction of Taylor’s — “impressive” seems to be a gross understatement at this point — epic jewelry collection was expected to raise $30 million, but by the time the last bid was placed, the 80 lots fetched a staggering $115,932,000, drop-kicking the record for a private collection previously established by the Duchess of Windsor‘s $50,281,887 auction in 1987.
