Joe Fresh and So Clean in a Dirty Mexican Bathhouse, and other Steamy Fashion Films

Earlier this week, Joe Fresh (AKA the classier Canadian H&M) opened its NYC doors on 43rd and Fifth Ave. Not only did the first 200 people in line to get in win a $100 gift card (some had camped out since 3AM), but they also witnessed the premiere of three oh-so-fresh fashion films. Joe Fresh backed and collaborated with artists Sue de Beer, Deborah Tuberville and Ellen Von Unwerth on films of NYC rockstardom, a dirty Mexican bathhouse, and a sexy Miami pool party, respectively. All in sleek looks from the Freshest of Spring 2012. Watch them here.

Sue de Beer sends Theodora Richards into the dreamlike territory of 60s and 70s rock and roll. The rockstar in her hotel room with her hot photographer man. The Keith Richards’ offspring embodies her dad’s badass spirit in this steamy role.

Deborah Tuberville revisited the bathhouse theme that made her 1975 Vogue images iconic, only this time in a dilapidated Mexican baños of San Bartolome. The dark, supernatural setting offsets Joe Fresh Spring 2012.

Ellen Von Unwerth brought the most levity to the scene with Miami Vixens. Two South Beach girls give off 60s California dreaming vibes in Joe Fresh’s brightest. Will they or won’t they steal off with the boy in the polka dot pants?

Guess and Claudia Schiffer Celebrate 30 Years of Sexy

Guess is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year with some familiar faces. Claudia Schiffer, one of the most iconic Guess Girls, stars in a new campaign photographed by Ellen von Unwerth, who famously shot the German stunner in 1989, thus launching her to supermodeldom. The brand is also debuting a capsule collection inspired by its bevy of former Girls including Eva Herzigova, Adriana Lima, Line Gost and the late Anna Nicole Smith.

CEO and creative director of Guess Paul Marciano chose Schiffer to front the 30th anniversary campaign based on the impact her original ad had on not only the company, but on pretty much everyone. “She was a turning point of Guess, she was a turning point of Ellen’s career, Guess was a turning point of a life for Claudia,” he told WWD.

The shot of Schiffer in a lace bustier, tussled tresses and gold hoops set the blueprint for all future Guess ads and according to Marciano, “made her career” and subsequently “made Guess a different company. Everybody talked about the Guess Girl.”

Schiffer, for her part, was happy to wax nostalgic with Marciano and Unwerth. “Guess will always have a soft spot in my heart, and I’m excited that 23 years later we can still work together so successfully,” the super said. Meanwhile, can we talk about how at 41 — which is 1002 in model years — Schiffer has aged nary a day? They just don’t make supermodels like they used to, i.e. in a lab somewhere in Switzerland.

The Guess 30th Anniversary Collection will include T-shirts bedazzled with images of Gost and Smith — sign me up for the latter, thanks — a sheer leopard-print blouse and the three-zipper Marilyn jeans that introduced the brand to the world. The 15-piece collection will retail for between $39 and $138 and will hit stores April 24. [WWD, sub req'd]

Love it or hate it, a model has a better chance winning a Pulitzer than landing a U.S. Vogue cover — with a few notable exceptions. While stars are rightfully and contractually beautiful, however, not all of them can cut the couture mustard. Then there are those ladies who love the camera and the camera is kind of obsessed with them. Here, the 10 actresses who give the best editorial — and give models a run for their money — are given the countdown treatment.

Gaye McDonald, Lili Taylor, Ubah Hassan, Jae Childs, Ariel Meredith, R’el Dade, Jeneil Williams, Cici Ali, Jasmine Tookes and Kelly Moreira star in “Tribute to Black Beauties” with featured players: giant Afros, limbs for days and a heaping helping of sass. Ellen von Unwerth shoots and Giulio Martinelli scores with Prada, Missoni and Ports 1961.

Top Model Winner Ann Ward in Vogue Italia

Remember when André Leon Talley came aboard the U.S.S. Tyra, took over America’s Next Top Model and picked the girl to win Cycle 15 within the first 5 minutes? Well, that girl, the long and lanky Ann Ward has made her Vogue Italia debut and the pictures just go to show that ALT can do in one fell swoop what ANTM has been trying to do for 8 years: create an actual top model.

Shot by Ellen Von Unwerth, Tyra took time out of her busy smizing schedule to write the accompanying story. Ann looks incredible and brought that weird, angular posing that kept her at the head of the Top Model pack to the pages of Italian Vogue. All Ann needs now is a few high profile runways next season and she’ll land the cover by the end of the year. So ALT speaketh, so shall it be.

GUESS Jeans Spring/Summer 2011 Video Campaign

This past weekend GUESS officially released this behind the scenes video for their latest campaign. The video captures the energy of the most recent spring campaign shoot was directed by world renowned photographer, Ellen von Unwerth, who shot the classic GUESS campaigns of the 1980’s and 1990’s including famed GUESS.

The behind the scenes video features the stars of the campaign, Alyssa Miller, Elsa Hosk, Kate Upton and Silviu Tolu frolicking on the beaches of Malibu, California. Mark Salling’s hit single “Illusions” from his debut album “Pipe Dreams,” provides the perfect back drop for the carefree and upbeat video.

GUESS & Ellen von Unwerth team up for another campaign that is sure to become another classic.

The black & white classic images are reminiscent of the 1960′s and 1970′s iconic beach movies that embody that time in film history. Cropped pants, floral rompers, and pin up inspired swimwear dominate the images and set the tone for the campaign. I’ve always enjoyed past men’s collections which were inspired by rock & roll, but I am loving the cleaner approach in this collection which features cardigans, dark denim, and plaid shirts that compliment the women’s collection.

Models Alyssa Miller, Elisa Hosk, Kate Upton, and Siliu Tolu are the perfect faces to bring the campaign to life.

For Fall 2010, GUESS unveils an iconic advertising campaign using world renowned photographer Ellen von Unwerth, who shot the classic GUESS campaigns of the 1980’s and 1990’s including famed GUESS models Claudia Schiffer, Carre Otis, and Eva Herzigova. Keep reading for more shots of the campaign…

The ads were shot in Memphis, the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll. The campaign story follows three rebels as they embark on a road trip to Memphis and try and make their mark in the music scene.

I am dying overs this campaign for many reasons. I love the fact that the pictures were shot in black and white, following the trend of other clothing companies who have done the same this fall. This kind of photography seems to make everything look more elegant somehow. I also enjoy the styling of the models. The campaign looks so retro while still being up to date. Lastly, I love the direction that GUESS is going with their actual clothes. They have manged to keep their classic rock edge, but are very relevant to today’s fashion needs.

Despite Lady Gaga’s extreme attempts at shocking fashion it seems rare to find her on the cover of a magazine or in a stylized shoot. But now that I have found one, I’m on the hunt for more. Having someone else be her stylist is a much more flattering look then my little pony hair and Kermit the Frog blazers. At this point I’d be more shocked to see her in normal clothes! The styling in this Out spread is far from normal, but she looks good and its vampire inspired so no complaining from me.

Models Claudia Seiler and Luize Salmgrieze attempt desperatly to make the clothing look good and meaningful, yet they seem distracted. Also, why is it titled ‘A Sence of Place?” I just don’t get it…

Inspired by the ancient civilizations referenced in the Spring/Summer 09 Collections, Dazed & Confused this month summons ‘Divine Power’ and sets about channeling everything that is awe-inspiringly ancient and majestic about the worlds of fashion, art, music and film at the moment.

Model of the moment Lakshmi, creative director Nicola Formichetti and photographer Josh Olins combine their godlike touch to create this issue’s highly dramatic cover shoot, while fashion editor Katie Shillingford even gained access to the inner circle of Stonehenge for her unprecedented shoot with photographer Mel Bles. Acclaimed photographer Ellen Von Unwerth meanwhile makes for the town of Bedrock in her Flintstones-inspired shoot with stylist Joanna Schlenzka.

Olga Kurylenko looks like a fierce, Austin Powers secret agent-esque version of an American Apparel ad. Give me a metallic jumpsuit any day of the week, but what I’m really concentrating on here are the accessories. Can I get hooked-up quick with a gold handgun, black crystal-studded cuffs and some huge, elaborate chokers? Ellen von Unwerth did a great job of capturing the action element in these photos, even though it was probably minimal in reality. I can only imagine how much Dov Charney is loving this spread.

Funny I came across this today, as I just watched The Prisoner of Azkaban on Sunday night. I love, love, love this spread; Emma Watson looks incredibly beautiful and energetic. The talented young actress was photographed by Ellen von Unwerth for a recent issue of Vs. magazine. She wears all of the clothes really well, looking very mature yet young and playful.

Brit-pop sensation Lily Allen makes a fabulous cover girl for the February issue of Spin Magazine. Photographer Ellen von Unwerth shot Allen for the cover and spread inside. Girlfriend looks fabulous in some of the best dresses I’ve seen in awhile. The number with the black stars in my absolute favorite, but the shoes she’s wearing while standing on the stairs bring tears to my eyes. I’ve always admired and respected Allen, not only for her awesome music, but her individualistic style as well. I’m not a Spin reader, but I might have to snag this issue.
