Killer Platforms: Short Film on Shoes in the 70s

Edited by

What with the advent of Jeffrey Campbell, the platform generating machine, we hardly bat an eyelash at the prospect of wearing what some (read: old people) referred to in the 70s as “ankle-breakers.” But in the day, sky high chunky platforms were  newsworthy media shakers, and semi-plausible reason for medical concern. With the likes of these vintage Vivienne Westwood ten-inchers, Elton John, David Bowie, The Who, and the chic London scene spread the trend right around. So what did the people of England think of them come 1977? Watch the doc, and see how the fairest of them all cannot be deterred.

Elton John’s Greatest Shades of All Time

Edited by

I can’t exactly recall which came first: Buying my new rad vintage sunnies or singing Rocketman repeatedly in my head, and aloud. Either way, I can’t help my insatiable appetite for fantabulous frames to Sir Elton John. He is the fore-fairy-godfather of wild sunglasses, and for that (along with countless hours of music), we thank him. Let’s take a gander at some of his greatest specs.

Mullet of Kintyre! Paul McCartney, Rockstars and Muppets Captured at their Funniest

Edited by

Rockstars can hardly sartorially be wrong, they tend to just be more exaggerated versions of themselves. Former Navy combat photographer, James Fortune, however, had a knack for catching the world’s biggest rock stars at their funniest. Now these original numbered prints are available for purchase on Rock Paper Photo. See George Harrison and a little green friend, Robert Plant and a little white friend, and more…

Harvey Weinstein and SJP Break from Halston

Edited by

Don’t worry, Halston, I wish it was the 70s too. Me, you, Diana Ross, Liza Minnelli, Jerry Hall and Bianca Jagger blowin’ rails off Elton John at 54 to Donna Summers‘ “I Feel Love,” everyone in a psychadelic caftan or beige pantsuit of your making. Fast forward 40 years — has it been that long?! — and you’re a struggling label unable to find your footing after the death of your visionary founder Roy Halston. And now, not only has Carrie Bradshaw trotted away as your president, but that guy who’s banging Marchesa left too. What to do now? (P.S. I’ve got a coke spoon and Liza on speed dial — coincidentally, the two are related.)

Edited by

Great style transcends space and time. From a 19th century Indian colonel in head-to-toe tartan to a 70s supermodel in bright yellow plaid, significant fashion statements will always circle back around. Elizabeth Walker explores this trend phenomenon through historic photographs in her gorgeously-done coffee table staple Style Book: Fashionable Inspirations (Flammarion 2011). If you’re ever wondering how to wear that menswear-inspired suit, vintage fur shawl or those sky-high platforms, let style icons like Diane Keaton, Elton John and Sue Coddington be your guides.

Further Signs of the Apocalypse: Oprah No Longer the World’s Most Powerful Celebrity?

Edited by

For only the third time in the past seven years, Oprah Winfrey does not top Forbes Celebrity 100 List, their annual measure of entertainment-related earnings, media visibility and social media power. So who had the audacity, the tweet prowess and the f****in’ balls to topple the queen from atop her throne? One word: Gaga.

A Mother’s Day Gift Guide for Your Gay Dad

Edited by

Sometimes a boy falls in love with another boy and they start dating. Then, if avoiding the usual pitfalls of gay romance – such as open relationships, meth addiction, and generally being a human male – they may travel to one of the five states where they’re allowed to legally recognize their union and/or travel to an African or Eastern Asian nation for their pick of needy orphans. Other options include paying their way through the American adoption system or finding a willing lesbian with a free uterus, but no matter the method of conception, eventually there is a baby and it is showered with love and attention from various uncles and aunts of varying gender identities. And that baby will, if avoiding the usual pitfalls of adolescence – such as puberty, meth addiction and generally being a human teenager – they may turn out to be well-adjusted member of society. So after all that work and all that love and all those years bringing you up with a full knowledge of the Liza Minnelli canon, shouldn’t you show your appreciation with the best gifts possible for your gay dad(s) this Mother’s Day?

FASHION SCRAMBLE: The Royal Wedding Guest List + Macy’s Hangs It Up for a Greener Planet + Carine Designing Her Own Label?

Edited by

- The official Royal Wedding guest list is out and shockingly Fashion Indie is nowhere to be seen. I guess we, much like the Obamas — who also didn’t receive an invite — will have to watch it from home this Friday morning at 5:30 a.m. However, the Beckhams, Dame Elton John, Joss Stone, Guy Ritchie, Mario Testino…and the guy who plays Mr. Bean will all be in attendance. I just hope Rowan Atkinson‘s choice in gown won’t upstage the bride. [BBC]
