Gentlemen, Start Your Collections: London Prepping for Men’s Fashion Weekend

The inaugural London Collections: Men schedule has been set and it’s going to be a gentlemanly affair with Prince Charles, Tom Ford, Tommy Hilfiger and a bevy of bespoked bros participating.

His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales will kick off the sartorial weekend on June 14 with a reception at St. James’s Palace followed by the opening reception hosted by Topman that night. The following evening Ford will hold a dinner while Esquire and Mr. Porter have an event of their own.

On Saturday night, the 16th, Louis Vuitton and Spencer Hart will both host cocktail parties and everything will be wrapped up nicely on the 17th with a Burberry event hosted by Christopher Bailey and a GQ dinner hosted by Calvin Klein.

As for the actual fashion, Hilfiger, Pringle of Scotland, Thom Browne, Belstaff, Jonathan Saunders, Christopher Kane, Joseph Abboud and Richard Nicoll among others will all hold presentations.

John Varvatos Gets Down to The Roots

The Roots, the Grammy-winning, ass-kicking, Jimmy Fallon-backing hip hop band from Philly, will be the collective faces of John Varvatos‘ Fall 2011 campaign.

“I’ve been a huge fan of The Roots for years,” says Varvatos, “They are one of the most innovative musical forces on the planet.”

True story. Also, Black Thought, most underrated MC. There, I said it.

Danny Clinch shot The Roots at Republic Airport in New York right as they were getting off the plane — an homage to how rock stars traveled in the 70s. Creative director Stephen Niedzwiecki explains:

“The way The Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and The Beatles traveled had a huge impact on the direction for this season’s campaign…Led Zeppelin’s plane had fireplaces built in. So that’s what inspired us to shoot them in that way.”

And that’s why Led Zeppelin is fucking awesome. Anyhoo, in addition to the airport scenario there are other “image-based” shots that will debut in the September issues of GQ, Esquire, Vanity Fair, Details and other fash mags.

And as a special treat, The Roots threw together a little impromptu number on the tarmac:

Celebs Celebrate Joseph Abboud Watch Collection In LA

On Thursday, June 16th, luxury menswear brand Joseph Abboud and Esquire magazine hosted an intimate cocktail party to celebrate the launch of their watch collection at the Sunset Tower Hotel in Los Angeles.

Guests included Ryan Phillippe, David Arquette, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Jonas, AnnaLynne McCord ,Trevor Donovan, Samantha Ronson, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Colton Haynes, and Amber Rose. The tunes were provided by DJ Paul Sevigny and a musical performance by special guest Hugo.

The Joseph Abboud watch collection will debut Fall 2011 at better retailers of fine men’s watches throughout the US. We are huge fans of the brand. We even got a chance to interview its Creative Director, Bernardo Rojo, not too long ago!

Ad It Up: The Ups and Downs of the Year’s Ad Pages, So Far…

While Elle had the biggest increase in ad pages during the first half of the year, InStyle had the largest number of ad pages for any fashion title, while Vogue continues to go strong and W‘s just happy to be in the game.

The story goes something like this:

InStyle – up 4.7 % to 1,156 pages

Vogue – up 11% to 1,094 pages

Elle – up 15% to 1,082 pages

Harper’s Bazaar – down 5.4% to 712 pages

W – up 5% to 44o pages

For men’s titles:

GQ – down 3% to 485 pages

Esquire – up 12.5% to 410 pages

Men’s Health – up 4% to 377 pages

Men’s Journal – up 5% to 353 pages

Details - down 2.8% to 311 pages

And on the lifestyle front:

Real Simple, down 6.6% to 688 pages

O: The Oprah Magazine, up 3.8% to 671 pages

Vanity Fair – up 6.5% to 650 pages

Redbook – down 1.6% to 635 pages

Martha Stewart Living – up 2% t0 507 pages

More – down 3.3% to 401 pages

Evan Rachel Wood Talks Tattoos & Being Bisexual In Esquire

Evan Rachel Wood has come a long way from playing a confused and semi psychotic preteen in the 2003 movie Thirteen. She recently stripped down and opened up in the latest issue of Esquire about her ink, past relationships, and sexuality.

On her relationship with Marilyn Mason:

“I think one of the things that freaked people out so much is that we looked so different.”

On dating women:

“Yeah, I’m more kind of like the guy when it comes to girls. I’m the dominant one…I’m opening the doors, I’m buying dinner. Yeah, I’m romantic.”

Wood is certainly a fascinating individual and an amazing actress. It’s good to know that know can be candid and real.

And in one last ditch effort to save print, Esquire is launching an “Augmented Reality” issue featuring Robert Downey Jr. The issue is using the same technology used to produce the yellow first down line in football to produce an interactive issue. The codes (like the one shown on the cover) will display video or commentary from Robert Downey Jr. throughout the issue, and even include a Lexus ad.
