1. Invest in a tent: Not to camp in silly, to wear! Tent dresses are the best fat day cures in the whole entire world. Just make sure it fits you well through the chest and arms to avoid looking like you’re wearing an actual tent; that’s when this look becomes unflattering. 2. Wear pants at your actual waist: Here’s the thing, low rise pants are not flattering if you carry extra weight in your stomach. Try a pair of high-waisted pants that sit at your natural waist, the smallest part of your stomach. 3. Opt for an empire waist: When the waist of a dress sits above your natural waist and flows into an A-line skirt, it draws attention up and away from your problem area. 4. Go vintage shopping: They don’t make ‘em like they used to, that’s for sure. In an age of fast fashion and mass produced everything, garments are not made of the same high quality they once were. Dresses from the 50s and 60s were tailored to actually fit a woman’s body correctly and give her a waist. 5. Buy a bra that fits: And no excuses! As an intimate apparel industry veteran, I can’t tell you how many women I’ve heard say “this new bra changed my life.” A proper fitting bra lifts and separates to give you the shapely figure you deserve. It also improves posture and, I guarantee, confidence that will be noticed by everyone. Stop by a department store with a good intimate apparel department, and someone can measure and help you find the perfect fit. 6. Cute shapewear won’t kill you: Shapewear – UGH what a gross word, right? Well, it doesn’t have to be. Shaping and smoothing garments have come a long way since girdles, as many of them can pass for regular clothing. Smoothing and shaping tanks with a touch of lace look like normal slips or camis, so you don’t need to worry about being frumpy when removing your clothes. 1. Wear a jazzy surgical mask. Remember when swine flu was all the rage? Everywhere you looked, someone(s) was wearing a surgical mask. These are ugly and sterile, no pun intended. Spice up your look while protecting your immune system with gemstones, colorful patterns or even a different mouth. Samira Boon created her masks because she was tired of seeing the the dreary white variety everywhere. You can be a tiger, gorilla or zipped-lip by snagging one at the Hara Museum Online Shop. The Etsy shop Cheap Champagne offers ruffles and plaids if you want a girlie feel.

2. Lady gloves keep germs at bay. A lady should never leave her house without gloves, how rude! These dandy little dress gloves keep scum from penetrating your precious dermis. Remove them and voila!, it’s like public transportation never happened. Forzieri White Flowered Lace Gloves, Burberry Studded Leather Gloves and Prada Vernice Gloves are all fabulous options.

3. Keep hand sanitizer with you at ALL TIMES. Don’t even think about re-applying lip gloss without getting subway grime off your fingers first. Have one in your bag for easy grabbing and another on your desk so you can sanitize before touching your keyboard. I am always so happy when I make a vintage sale because I expect it to go to someone that is gong to love and cherish that item. It kind of makes my heart sink to see this happen.

The reason that Akira is such a killer nominee for this Friday feature is that it’s probably the most detailed animated film ever made.  It literally puts anything Disney has ever done to shame.  Factor in that the movie takes place on such a massive scale (a re-imagining of post-World War III Tokyo) that there’s a helluva lot of detail.

Based on Ôtomo’s as of then yet-unfinished manga (it just gets nerdier and nerdier, doesn’t it?) the film starts off extremely strong focusing on a group of teenage reprobates and secret military experiments but soon loses its way.  Fortunately for those of us who like looking at beautiful things, however, it never loses its style.  So, with that, on to the outfits!

As stated above: super-macro.  The outfit that pops out most is the man in the yellow chinos.  It’s getting towards the end of pastel season (i.e. Spring is being burned to death) but it’s always a good/super-preppy look when someone gets all Nantucket on their own ass with a basic blue oxford and some colored slacks.  Then there’s Mr. Punk I and Mr. Punk II to the left with looks reminiscent of the most recent Balmain men’s collection.  Leather jackets with a little bit of prep mixed in (a button down and olive green slouch neck sweater).  Who knew cartoons could dress so damn well?

But Ôtomo can go super-micro too.  If you want to look like a teenage derelict/leader of a futuristic bike gang, here’s how you do it, from head to toe.  Check the fit on all the items: slightly oversized polo to let the cool breeze in, cropped just-slim-enough chinos, killer mid-top white sneaks.

Second from the left, and the guy all the way towards the right.  Neither of these characters plays a major role in the film.  In fact, the rightmost character might not even have a line.  Nevertheless, both of these guys have got it going on.  Hello Joe Strummer, and hello sweet shearling collar overcoat.  We’ll refrain from commenting on the cutoff graphic tee on the left.

The girls get in on the action too, of course.  From left to right, some real-world finds.  Honestly, this movie’s like a schizophrenic sketchbook come to life mixed with a lot of Mad Max, Max’s Kansas City, and, uh…Max Fischer.  It’s totally max, basically.

Check the gallery and see if you can match the following with their pictures.  It’s like one of those quizzes on children’s placemats at roadside diners.  Or, you know, don’t.  Whatever you do, pick up Akira (or watch it on YouTube).  Enjoy all the pretty pictures, pretend to soak up the philosophy and the Kubrick-ian 2001-style ending.  When else can you say you’re-a-learnin’ while watchin’ car-toons?

I’m quite fond of the thick, chunky scarf trend that infiltrated its way into our wardrobes as of late, but turns heads and drops jaws like an avant garde accessory. Regretsy is the newest member of the bash-things family..This user board prides itself in making fun of things they think are hideous on Etsy, and getting away with it by refusing to link to the original source…not like it’s hard to find custom Twilight painted converse…Google?

Very few designers are able to transverse the limitations of fashions cut and sew to create truly wearable pieces of art, but Attilla Design, an Etsy designer we just discovered might be one in the running. Not only limited to fashion, this designer has engaged in home furnishings and art with an aesthetic which challenges wearability yet leaves those who purchase it with a fulfilled sense of fashion entitlement. Just when you thought you’d never see another pair of tattered jeans or a distressed t-shirt on the street, the fashion gods strike back, making tears, rips, wrinkles and crumples trendier than ever. But let’s be honest, with absolutely everyone breaking out their destroyed denim shorts, us trendy, yet unique, fashionables need something a little different. 

Needless to say, as soon as I came across Artlab’s distressed array of neckwear, button-ups, tees, accessories, dresses and suits, I fell in L-O-V-E, love! The natural vintage aesthetic completely puts the forced destruction of garments to shame. The best thing about these pieces? They’re one of a kind, created exclusively by designer Patricia Ayres, with unique printmaking and the inspiration from her dreams, memories and urban landscapes. Ugh, what I wouldn’t do for my own custom distressed pantsuit!

With perhaps the most accurate name in jewelry design history, San Francisoco-based OctopusMehas cornered the market on wearable animal parts.  Tentacles are the new rabbit’s foot!

Most of the made-to-order pieces are real octopus tentacles or suckers cast in sterling silver.

OctopusMe jewelry is available in a variety of styles and sizes from the OctopusMe Etsy shop.

Supermarket HQ is a more polished, Etsy-esque site for independent artists/designers/craftsters all over the world.

Like Etsy, the site hosts handmade books, toys, and clothing.  But among the no-name sellers, I spotted some pieces from Yoko Devereaux and a lot of cool jewelry (above).  I’m going to look up about a hundred designers now.

The official beer of Williamsburg (sorry Brooklyn Brew) has been made into soap.  It seems someone discovered how fresh their skin felt after a night of binge drinking when they woke up in a cheap puddle of barfed up Pabst Blue Ribbon.  The soap is available on Etsy and is by far the last thing I would ever want to bathe in, but hell, it would make a great gag/intervention gift for that special someone in your life who still hasn’t discovered their tolerance level.
