We first met Hyden Yoo when he launched his collection several years ago and we are amazed how far the line has evolved. No longer strictly high quality, great fitting woven shirts with a slightly shorter cut than traditional dress shirts, Hyden Yoo is now a full collection of knits, trousers, jackets, and of course, wovens. Yoo describes it as Wall Street meets Brooklyn hipster. We describe it as must have now!!!

Frida Giannini has won me over completely with her Fall 2008 Ready-To-Wear collection, I am in love with every single stitch, of every single piece. Her sexy, confident style manifested itself this time as a Russian, hippie, rock chick, but one who can afford to look that way luxuriously. Peasant blouses, straight leg hipsters, fringed riding boots, flirty dresses, vests, trench coats, and lots of fur were layered, embroidered, printed, studded and accessorized to the max with gold chains, heart necklaces and pirate-esque belts.

Eight, magnificent, floor trailing dresses were the last pieces to show, some draped goddess style, some with sashes, some printed with feather patterns. The details were pivotal to the collection as well, like the adorable gold and black clutches bearing the Gucci logo, and the studded strappy heels. It was nice to see some color and pattern from a fashion week that was one all black show after another. This collection will definitely make for amazing shopping with its broad range of separates, and unique pieces.

Maria Cornejo Extra shined with a collection that expanded on the already widely held notion that this is one designer on the cusp of fashion immortality. In probably her last collection before she goes officially “mainstream” the designer showcased what she does best, modern grasps of symmetry and bold burst of wearable color.

The show was held at the new atelier for Maria in a room that was packed to the walls with a who’s who of hipsterdom. Cory Kennedy was chilling front row. FORM’s Jerry Tam (who recently became a celebrity when indie mag MetroPop got him to grace their covers) discussed his collections direction and his days as an assistant to GAP’s Patrick Robinson.

Piece after piece came down the runway as the crowd was wowed by an abundance of color with dresses in fuscia, cerelion, and blues. The geometric shapes breathed real life into this very wearable collection by one of Fashion Indie’s favorite designers. Also notable where horsehair accessories which added bursts of color and texture to Maria Cornejo Extra’s more traditional black and grey pieces.

Continuing on our “Everyone is F*cking Reading Fashion Indie” kick. “The Duckies” aka Steven Cox and Daniel Silver (or their PR agents) totally contacted us back on our negative post on the collection.

Sounds like a sneaky little pr ploy to me, but I appreciate the attention (yes I’m a whore who loves the goodness). Here’s the message. I guess realizing their explanation, the lack of music wasn’t so bad, but they weren’t sitting in the front row.

“That’s too bad you didn’t enjoy the show – so many many people did. Actually the response has been overwhelming for both of us. We felt since the collection was boiled down to its essence we thought this was a great opportunity to have people focus on the clothes and what better way to do that than by having a show without music. I don’t know about you – but to me backstage – it was kind of beautiful to see 500 fashion people be still and quite and focused for 8 minutes.

xoxoxo

Jovovich Hawk has been on of those collections I want to hate on (the celebrity factor, sorry Milla) but can’t because of how cool the clothes really are. This duo has continuously thrown out collection after collection of highly wearble, slighty vintage inspired looks that can satisfy even the most tasteful fashionista (hate that word, we really need to create a new one).

This season, suiting played a part in the collection with a plaid piece that brought of a sense of London mod to the mix. As usual, a very solid collection. Hopefully handbags and accessories are next or maybe a maternity line Milla, I’m sure you’ve had some trouble finding vintage wear that would fit your baby bump.

Have to say it. I don’t get this collection.

I know Thom Brown has been talked about as “the savior” of mens fashion, but his collection is just plain stupid. Fine, the simpler pieces may make sense and yes I can’t deny his amazing ability to make a wonderfully tailored jacket, but the high-water flood pants and bermuda suits this dude is pushing out are just ridiculous. Who wears this stuff besides Thom and his models?

Also noted is the model in the feather jacket. What the f*ck is that thing and why would anyone in their right mind ever wear it? I’ve met Thom before and as much as I love who he is in person his collection of unwearable, prissy wear is just plain silly. Hate to say it, but where are we without a little bit of honesty. Remember Indies, just because something is “different” from the norm, doesn’t mean it’s good fashion.

P.S. If you do choose to expose your pasty ankles and knees, please apply some of that tanning lotion or get a tan. No one wants to be blinded by your UV free wobblers.

In her typical upper-east side meets 60s chic, Tory Burch kept her Fall 08 collection true to her typical style. Her party, however was a whole other back bend.

Held at Christie’s with The Fug Girls who put it accurately when they said there was drama. Burch’s ex- Lance Armstrong was in attendance and seemed to distract the usually calm and collected Burch a bit. The close-knit crowd was utterly thrilled with her smart collection and friend Aerin Lauder and others were in attendance at the sumptuous show. Between the crowd, the healthy looking models, the champagne and the vibrant clothing and party drama, this party was New York delicious!

Lance Armstrong was his handsome (also see. shaddy) self. The overall feeling in the room was to avoid the film crews, as it seemed everyone was being interviewed, and not to make too much fuss over the high profiles celebutants standing on your toes. Did I mention that the show was composed of having the models standing on a platform on one side of the room? It was a very artistic way to display the show and also maintain the flow of champagne!

I’m loving those sheer tights! Three words to describe this collection: crazy, sexy, cool. Fabulous combination of garments and fabrics. Thakoon is fearless when it comes to using patterns- flores, stripes, plaid.

The accessories absolutely add an extra something to theses outfits. The black leather gloves give it a punk rock look to “redefined silhouettes” of skirts and dresses. I guess opposites DO attract.

I’ve been thinking a lot about clothing lately. I think there is a big potential for the whole clothing experience to be re-invented so we don’t have to hurt the environment and humanity so much. Instead of always using new fabric and shipping clothes made in sweat shops by little kids all over the world a very different approach can be taken. One major step in the right direction is what this a friend of a friends clothing line is up to.Mandate of Heaven makes their clothes from recycled fabric. And they distribute their clothes primarily locally which cuts down on shipping and packaging pollution. They’re also all very expressive clothes which gives the person wearing them a strong individuality and uniqueness which helps break out of the manufactured mindset of manufactured clothes.I was invited to check out their show and decided to bring my camera. Then I couldn’t help myself and wanted to edit their show into a video with music by one of my favorite local bands Forest Fire who I’ve posted a performance by in the past.

The presentation last night for Obedient Sons & Daughters proved why Hutson was named one of the top menswear designers in America last week by GQ and the CFDA.

The collection for men, and now women showed us what the future can look like- a blend of traditional menswear fabrics and silhouettes – wool continental jackets, pinstripe woven shirts– with hunting elements such as riding jackets, hunting trousers with patched knees, and neck ties all styled and cut with a rock and roll attitude. the collection’s connections to the music scene are still apparent– the clothes still had a cutting edge that would suit any rock star– leather MC jackets, pointy boots, and a surprising brocade smoking jacket that was reminiscent of Chinese waiter uniforms from the 70s..

The girls looked sexy in a feminized version of the menswear. Shorts worn with blazers or tuxedo jackets and sexy woven shirts looked just right for now. Windowpane plaid full trousers looked super sexy with mohair gloves. As a styling element, we are loving the ribbon bow ties worn by both men and women throughout the show.

To be completely honest, this was an extremely refreshing show from a group of designers that have really surpassed my initial expectations with a collection that was a fresh, inspiring, wearable and a must have for any one looking for a little more glam for their everyday. Their hues we’re perfect for the New York woman looking for a bit of color to liven up her fall wardrobe. Why these designers didn’t win the recent CFDA award is still a mystery, but this collection definitely shows that even with out all the glamour they still have the glitz.
