Carine Roitfeld Puts On All Black Fashion Show

The Cannes Film Festival kicks off today and among the highlights attendees can look forward to is a fashion show organized by Carine Roitfeld. Featuring her idea of the perfect black wardrobe, the show will include all black looks from Alexander Wang, Balenciaga, Roberto Cavalli, Chanel, Christian Dior,Christopher Kane, Emilio Pucci, Fendi, Giorgio Armani, Givenchy, Louis Vuitton, and Versace. Best of all, you might be able to snag some of it. How? The show will be on May 24th at the amFAR Cinema Against AIDS gala and in true charitable form, the entire collection will be auctioned off to one very lucky fashionista. Well on her way into developing her new fashion magazine C Fashion Book, we cannot wait to see what this editor turned runway producer’s ideal all black collection consists of.

Lifetime’s New ’24 Hour Catwalk’ is Exactly What it Seems

Designers. Start your collections. Now. I’ll be back in exactly 24 hours, and it had better be good and done. That, my dear, is the premise of Lifetime‘s newest competitive fashion show, 24 Hour Catwalk, hosted by our dear Alexa Chung. In each episode, four designers will create a garment, and two will be eliminated. The two remaining designers will then each create a three-piece collection with the aid of professional and mouthy sewers. At the end of those 24 hours, they present to the judges: design star and collab-addict Cynthia Rowley, PR guru James LaForce (sans Stevens) and the Very Classy fashion editor Derek Blasberg. It premieres Januray 10, 2012. See the sneak preview here.

Ah, just imagine the stresses that will boil in this pressure cooker of a show. Will you tune in?

Project Runway All Stars: Judges Announced

Fashion’s reigning reality show Project Runway has announced the cast to their spin-off Project Runway All Stars (fashion shriek!). The new Heidi will be played by model Angela Lindvall, supported by two designer judges Isaac Mizrahi and Georgina Chapman. Marie Claire’s editor in chief Joanna Coles will be filling the Tim Gunn role of cast mentor. Just as we so lovingly cheered on the Road Rules All Star challenges of the late 90′s, All Stars will surely tug a heartstring when we see crazy cat fights over thread and the sabotaging of seams via cast members like Sweet P Vaughn, Kenly Collins, and Mondo Guerra. In hopes that the designs are better and the drama bigger, the pot of gold has been upped to $100K in cash, $100K in technology, a boutique in Neiman Marcus, and a spread in Marie Claire magazine. Let the sewing begin!

Blake Lively’s Almost Crotch Shot and Other Chanel Cruise Beauties

Gossip Girl queen and most recently Chanel princess Blake Lively struck a pose in this barely there Chanel skirt (dress?) at the haute couture house’s Cruise collection show last night in Cannes. Although easier than exiting a car door, we wonder what cameras caught a TMI glimpse when she was perched in the front row. More Chanel sirens and a questionable pic of Lively and Peter Marino after the jump.

Alexandre Herchcovitch Fall 2011: Violent Forces of Nature

With shearling like sheetrock beneath the earth, neon yellow burst through, cracking like fissures in the surface and minerals pose as magnetic closures. Neon flows like lava down mountainous structures, carving new terrain in its path. Unfinished seams display the violent destruction of natural progression, frayed with time and movement. Layers of raw waistline, sewn into a single seam each on top and bottom, brush the rim of a belt that holds nothing but skin. Exposed darts show the innards out, creating structure with explosion. Lace grows out of seams, bringing up life where once was a split. Coats bind the arms with straps along the bicep, restraining movement; but a small sacrifice for such forceful shoulders. Lace sleeves in the last three looks show the stop motion flow of earth-forming destruction.

Above is that arm binding jacket. It came two thirds the way through the show. There were a few variations on it, and I’d love to try it on. It wouldn’t surprise me if Alexandre has figured out a way to allow movement while still looking restrictive.

Below is the belt that sits directly on the skin, between the soft edges of layered light material frayed.

Acid toned lava flows over bicep high leather gloves.

Backstage post-show, the man of the hour, Alexandre Herchcovitch seems a touch frazzled, but relieved and proud. He declines an interview (well, his PR girl does), but that’s okay. His clothes speak for themselves.

Don’t Get Caught Swapping Heels for Flats at Fashion Week

Ladies. There are several virtues of life as women we accept and extol. One of those is getting to be a giantess glamazon in 7 inch platform heels. Another is that it’s a widely known secret that we often change into less towering, more, dare I say, practical (yuck) flats for the walk to and from places like work, etc etc. But snap to! This is Fashion Week. I know you’re going to do it, but don’t you DARE let anyone catch you sneaking the change. I don’t care how twistedly painful your feet get, DO NOT change into flats while you are still in eyeshot of Lincoln Center. Be a lady. Do it in a Starbucks.

Lucky for those weaker beings whom I have witnessed do the switch way too close to the location of a show, photographs of these occurrences are rare. So rare, in fact, that I have hardly found any. Perhaps this is a bigger secret than I thought… Be warned though, if I spot you changing out of your heels in plain sight of a fashion venue, I’m blasting your picture on the internet. Keep your shoe swapping antics hush hush, don’t make me spill your dirty little secret.

Fashion Indie vs The Brooklyn Bridge. Fashion Indie WINS!!!

Yesterday was a serious adventure. With only ten days of planning we put together a fashion parade on the Brooklyn Bridge featuring 20 models, 7 designers, and a following of Brooklynites, tourists, journalist, and paparazzi which witnessed what will go down in history as the longest runway show the fashion world has ever seen.

I’m so excited that the event was a success and want to thank all the indies out there who made this happen.

Samantha Lennon on make-up and Dennis Bailey of DABarts on hair were absolutely amazing.

The models we’re spectacular and managed to walk the whole bridge without a single trip up (some even came running on the tailend in 5 inch heels).

Love Brigade, New York Couture, Brooklyn Royalty, Mandate of Heaven, San and Soni, Angel Lust, Zulema Griffin, Rachel Antoff, and Dannijo presented amazing collections which we’re looking forward to seeing more of all this week (Zulema’s show is tonight).

All and all this was an amazing event and we’re so excited to have been able to put it together.

Blast from the Past: Betsey Johnson Show at Studio 54

Here is an old video I dug up on the YouTube of the first, if not one of the first, Betsey Johnson shows. It dates back to 1977 and of course took place at Studio 54. I must say Betsey’s runway shows have improved from this one. The models are uncoordinated and unsure of what they are supposed to be doing, however I think it’s the massive amounts of coke they did before the show that has caused their jilted moves.

Fashion at a Troubled High School

Great story today from the NY Times: Parish Nation, a hip hop clothing line based in NYC donated their clothes and time to help troubled youth at Camden High School. For the students of this troubled high school, the fashion show was the rarest of the events, which turned their auditorium into somewhat of a runway. About 40 students were given the chance to participate in this rare event.

“Beneath it all was a more basic question, about the educational value of a fashion show. On the one hand, as one teacher put it, clothes are a bridge between street life and school life, two worlds teenagers toggle between. On the other, the fashion industry’s exclusivity and emphasis on looks might bruise feelings.”
