FDA Overhauls Sunscreen Otherwise We’re All Getting Cancer

The FDA is clamping down on the sunscreen industry, implementing new regulations to ensure consumers aren’t duped by false SPF claims and lulled into a sense of false security when they start sweating through their sweatproof application.

Among the changes:

- Sunscreens must offer proportional UVA and UVB protection, and if they don’t, they have to have a warning on the label stating that “it is not shown to protect skin cancer or early aging.”

- “Sunblock,” “waterproof,” and “sweatproof” are terms non grata. Apparently, they “give consumers a false sense of protection.” Instead, “waterproof” and “sweatproof” will be labeled “water resistant.”

-SPF 100 is a lie. The FDA might limit SPFs to 50 since there’s not sufficient proof that sunscreen offers any greater amount of protection. And furthermore, “experts say these high SPFs can give consumers a false sense of security.”

So what have we learned from the FDA, kids? A. We’re all going to die. B. Sunscreen is more or less useless. And C. Consumers are easily lulled into a false sense of security/protection/safety.

Congress Calls for Brazilian Blowout to Bow Out

I’ve always enjoyed a good Brazilian blow job, but turns out it might be detrimental to one’s health. The Brazilian Blowout, a brand of hair straighteners, contains about 8% more formaldehyde than is legally allowed and Congress wrote a stern letter to the FDA calling for “decisive action”:

“It is clear that the FDA needs to take decisive action. An investigation by the Environmental Working Group revealed the FDA has received 47 complaints from salon workers and clients who experience adverse reactions and injuries (including hair loss, blisters, burning eyes, noses and throats, headaches and vomiting) as the result of giving or receiving hair straightening treatments.”

Of all the things Congress can agree on, I’m glad it’s the use of embalming fluid in hair treatments. Meanwhile, I think Sarah Palin just found her campaign platform. Palin-Trump ’12! Armageddon shortly afterwards! [Beauty High]

Longer Eyelashes From The Makers Of Botox

Allergen, the company who gave the world Botox, is creating a drug called Lumigan that makes eyelashes grow. It’s awaiting FDA-approval, as are we.

According to the FDA, it may cause the skin around the eye to darken, or the eyes could change color altogether. Not exactly the cosmetic wonders I’d like to experience. I’ll stick with mascara or lash extensions, but if the FDA approval goes through, expect to see people rush to their doctors in search of longer lashes. Will you be one of them?
