Last night fellow editor Samantha Lim and I ventured to the West Side to see Persol unveil the first of three installments in its PERSOL MAGNIFICENT OBSESSIONS: 30 Stories of Craftsmanship in Film exhibition series.

Many of our favorite Indies were out last night including: Sir Ben Kingsley, Shenae Grimes, Famke Janssen, Rebecca Minkoff, Billy Burke, Scott Campbell, Arlenis Sosa, Genevieve Jones, Waris Ahluwalia, Lance Bass, & Sky Ferreira

The exhibition was itself fantastic. Some of the films included in the exhibtion were Taxi Driver, The Aviator, & Vertigo. Our personal favorite attraction happened to be costumes from Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette. (Featured below)

The exhibition, which will be open to the public (FOR FREE!) starting today until June 19th 2011 at Center 548 in New York City, celebrates the stories of obsessive craftsmanship behind some of cinema’s most iconic on-screen moments. It takes 30 manual steps to create the perfect pair of Persol frames and similarly this exhibit showcases how each instance of what appears on the silver screen can take hours, weeks or even months of painstaking research and craftsmanship to develop and comes for a place of passion.

For some more art check out this video of Sam & I doing a wave in a flipbook we made at the event (below)

Why Model Casting is like Editing Film

For those of you who read my article about editing film (digital images) and how mind set dependent that is, you might find this article interesting. I am just in the process of casting for a Fashion Campaign and I stopped the process for a moment to think about the challenges of doing so and share some of my immediate impressions with you.

The first thing I noticed and you may find this really amusing, if the model comp is showing nudity and in most cases they do and the shoot does not require any, it might be best to cover the breasts while casting. As an avid breast lover, I find it literally impossible to cast with any semblance of objectivity, when I have an incredibly beautiful pair of breasts starring at me in the face. So what do I do? I stare directly at the face and do my best to stay centered and focused.

Model Casting

When it is fashion, always try to find a girl with the most internet and editorial exposure, no matter what the budget, as this will aid in the viral buzz surrounding the use of this model for the campaign when it comes out. This will please everyone concerned, from the client to the ad agency, model and the whole food chain.

Try to cast outside of the norm as much as you feel is possible. Why? You want someone with stopping power. As you are the one who will make the preliminary decision to send off to the art buyer and art director and perhaps the casting director, make a choice that will leave an impression. They are counting heavily on your input.

Make sure that you make a pre-choice choice and leave it for a short while and come back later to reassess your choices. You would be amazed how much your frame of mind will affect your choices. That is where it really reminds me of editing film.

Only use agencies that you would consider for editorial spreads, as they are generally where you will find the most credible models. Don’t compromise here. It is important for your reputation to produce advertising work that looks like what you are showing in your editorial portfolio. That is only my opinion of course.

I have to get back to my casting, but remember this, that casting is an objective as well as subjective process. It is a balancing act and needs to be taken very seriously. Your model will be the focal point of your campaign or editorial. Choose with the utmost diligence…or not. If I have any further thoughts I will add them later.

Yesterday we launched the debut of Boutique Critique; a column in which I’ll be discovering a new gem of a shop each week, and introducing it to you one outfit at a time over the course of five days. We began most literally with a shop called Début. Founded by Lisa Weiss in 2007, it features brand new designers in the very first runs of their collections. One of the first collections the boutique ever acquired was a jewelry collection called Experiment 101 by Esha Soni. The line caught Weiss and her team’s eye and was a perfect fit to introduce the store’s concept. Now on Experiment 109, and no longer featured in Début, Soni seemed to have gotten the start she needed to continue a beautifully successful brand. With that, here is the second look of the week from Début.

Want it? Mention FashionIndie when you shop at Début and get 10% off anything in the store!

LOOK TWO: Early Afternoon Romp

The Romper: Timo Weiland, $350

It started with the Timo Weiland romper. Playful stripy black and white brocade touched with lace pile at the shoulders makes for a delicate daytime look. Timo and his design partner Alan Eckstein mused over Scandinavian actress Bibi Andersson for this collection. The result: feminine joviality.

The Belt: Meredith Wendell, $225

It looked somewhat incomplete without a belt. Luckily, Début is stocked with Meredith Wendell accessories. Self-defined as “uptown awkward”, there was nary an awkward sliver of leather in sight. Just this Italian-made baby soft mustard suede belt. The hue brings out the golden yellow button on the romper ever so slightly.

The Shoes: Esquivel, $540

These white patent cutout Esquivel saddles more than suffice for such a summer outing outfit. George Esquivel is enormously passionate about the craft and thus custom handmakes many of his shoes at his studio in California. Super smooth and uniquely built, these shoes felt made with love. I recommend you watch the video “Sound of Shoemaking” and enjoy a hot slice of cobbler.

Wondering how to get that braided headband look I’ve got going on? I whipped my hair into it in an instructional video here.

Stay tuned: Round 3 coming at you tomorrow.

In a show that had Lady Gaga’s paw print cemented to the aesthetic, Nicola Formichetti insurrected Mugler with a visual feast. Gaga’s gave us a taste of her new single Government Hooker as she made her modeling debut, working her monstrous platforms better than many professional models worked their curvaceous heels. On the live stream (or the luckiest, in Paris) we watched the show in its entirety, with Gaga’s new song interspersed with a hopped up version of Born This Way. Now we can watch it in the concise manner the Creative Director envisioned it. Gagalicious video ahead.

Sheer-bodied solid-armed pieces sauntered alongside pleather-cum-latex pants and trenches, surrounded by the sky-high shoulders of the eighties’ Thierry Mugler. The shoulders that Gaga helped to resurrect. As the looks turned to rubberized armor amongst a show where models became lively sirens, clutching at the wooden column archway, becoming little monster on the runway, the Mugler philosophy came to light: Entertainment.

James Franco wears many hats, all of them silly. Whether it’s acting in legit films, slumming it in soap operas for shits and giggles, posing in drag, or presenting penis art (…on his nose), he’ll do it all. His latest project? A postmodern, intensely intense analysis of Three’s Company.

Why is James Franco doing this? Well, why does James Franco do anything? He’s either perpetually stoned or VERY serious about his performance art (probably both).

“Three’s Company: The Drama,” according to the Sundance Institute, will be “a multi-media examination of the classic ’70s sitcom.” A sociocultural analysis of homophobia, misogyny, polyamorous relationships, the symbolism behind the Regal Beagle, and Suzanne Somers‘ boobs? WOW! Sounds like my failed college thesis!

Television has undoubtedly shaped our world: our increased exposure to dramatic entertainment, the shapes of our houses, the shape of the time in our day. In this piece James Franco hopes to pull television from the box and view it from ‘a slightly oblique perspective.’

Again, I’m pretty sure Franco’s “slightly oblique perspective” just means he got totally blazed in front of a Nick at Nite marathon.

Most of you have probably already seen this collection on styledotcom – it’s the same collection that walked the runway at Paris Fashion Week in March (click) . The show was sponsored by Philips. I thought they only made light bulbs, during the show I remembered they also made electronics…

link love:Go and Pay to See ‘Scott Pilgrim’ Right Now/a>

by John Lopez
Let me get straight to the point: Go and pay to see Scott Pilgrim right now. Why, you ask? Well, check out last weekend’s box-office totals. See Scott Pilgrim? Keep looking—it’s down there at No. 10. It made only $5 million dollars in its second weekend of release, a 53 percent drop from the first weekend, with a total domestic gross of $20 million. That’s not good. (Trust me when I say “not good”: Universal not only spent a lot making this, it spent a lot marketing it. They had to market the hell out of it because it was something you probably hadn’t heard about before—you know, the way movies used to be.)

The film’s dismal performance is pretty disheartening for anyone who’s a fan of the new, as opposed to the stale, trite, and cliche, because whatever Scott Pilgrim is, it is definitely not stale, trite, or cliche. It doesn’t redo old ideas, revisit threadbare conceits, or remake twice-told stories in a tired way. In fact, it’s good. Or, if you’re searching for movie-critic adjectives, you could call it “different,” “fresh,” and “innovative,” if not “cool,” “fun,” “heart-warming,” “intelligent,” and/or “awesome.” (Have fun with those, blurb-makers!) Listen, if A.O. “Nashville’s-the-Greatest-Movie-Ever” Scott can recommend a film aimed at video-game-junkie twentysomethings, whose themes and characters are as important to him as a Surgeon General’s Warnings is to Don Draper, there’s probably something there. And if you haven’t noticed, it’s been an atrocious year for movies. That’s not just our opinion: it’s so bad even studio executives are ringing up agents with frantic “Oh my God, what have we done” conference calls to ask, “Oh my God, what have we done?”

/a>So, if the movies have been so bad—if, as we complain, there’s nothing good playing—why is a good movie having such a hard time finding an audience? Scapegoats include Michael Cera’s ability to “open” a movie (though pretty much every actor gets that stigma these days); the inability of audiences to understand what the movie is (so we see only movies that can be easily summarized in canned tag lines? Like what, for example? Inception?); and, of course, comics and fan boys. (Right, because those people definitely don’t pay to go see movies.) Maybe Scott Pilgrim’s target audience—the Facebook generation—is downloading it instead of paying for a movie ticket. It’s hard to say if that’s true, but if it is: please, even if you’ve already illegally downloaded Scott Pilgrim, posted it on your Wall, and exported it to your iPhone 4, I assure you it’s much better on the big screen—almost as if that was the way director Edgar Wright intended it to be seen. And guess what, it wasn’t hastily converted to 3D either, so you don’t have to pay an extra $5 to wear funny glasses, watch an underlit screen, and get a migraine. So, put down the iPad (especially if you’re driving), turn left at the multiplex, and go buy a ticket. Tonight. Come on, it’s a Tuesday in mid-August, where else do you have to be? Plus, if you live in the lower 48, I can guarantee it’s a lot cooler in that theater.

What’s with the pushiness, you ask? Why is this so important? Well, one could argue, if you’ve ever complained at all about the woeful state of cinematic storytelling—how you get more engaging narratives in email forwards than you do at the movies these days—a healthy aversion to hypocrisy pretty much compels you to get your butt in that seat. See, as much as we like to complain about cynical studios and throwaway films, the fact is they make money—or just enough money to justify the bad habits. And if you must know, that’s what studios are trying to do (make money). Further, they don’t make junk out of some callous desire to inflict bland pain on our eyeballs. If anything, they inflict bland pain on our eyeballs out of fear: fear that they’ll take a tentative, baby-step stab at something different, something that presents semi-realistic issues, imperfect characters, and complex resolutions in a novel way—and no one will come. And they’ll lose money. And all the nay-sayers will take the box-office numbers as the final word on a movie’s worth. Worse, the studios won’t make those movies because when you’ve bet $100 million on “something new” and come up short, it doesn’t matter if in your heart of hearts you can tell yourself you made a good movie: you’re not going to bet your next $100 million the same way. If you still have a $100 million to bet. Or a job.

But I saw Toy Story 3 and Inception, you say. I’m doing my part as homo economicus, driving the market to provide the product I want. Good for you, but at this point, Chris Nolan and Pixar are going to be O.K. They are what you might call a “known quantity,” and Hollywood loves those, because they make for safer bets. But Scott Pilgrim was a risk, a gamble, a leap of faith. The sad-but-true fact is that studios and their corporate parents just don’t know how to do that, and when they do, you need to smack them upside the head with box-office success for them to understand the lesson. There was a different time, a desperate time: when the world was in crisis, the old studio system had collapsed, television was offering great storytelling, and gas was $3 a gallon. The studios had nothing to lose then, so they threw everything against the wall, took risks on new talent and crazy ideas, and we got films like Bonnie and Clyde, Chinatown, Apocalypse Now, Alien, Rocky, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, A Clockwork Orange, Star Wars, Jaws, Taxi Driver, Grease, Annie Hall, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and, oh yeah, The Godfather.

So, it can happen. But only if we, the not-so-faithful moviegoers, make it happen. Because studios, executives, actors, producers, writers, directors, agents, would love nothing more than to make the movies we actually want to see—that is, if we go see them. However, we have to demand better films with our wallets and our eyeballs. If we, as the audience, complain that studios don’t love us enough to give us something really worth our time, then we need to have the self-respect necessary to slay the sell-out stooges who tell us we can’t ask for anything better than Vampires Suck. (If you’d seen Scott Pilgrim, you’d get that reference.)

But really, the best reason to go see Scott Pilgrim is because it’s a good movie. It takes a stab at saying something honest in a new way, and has a lot of fun doing it. If you like that kind of thing, and would like to see more of it, please go and pay to see Scott Pilgrim right now. And if you don’t like it, I’ll forward you a really funny YouTube video about double rainbows. You can ROTFL. I’ll be at the theater.
/a>

‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The Matrix’

One of these films is shot by Bill Pope.
The other is shot by Bill Pope.
Both star Torontonians.
But which is which?

True story. Bill Pope also shot the 'Freaks & Geeks' pilot. I once suggested to him that 'Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World' would be equidistant between 'Freak & Geeks' and 'The Matrix.'

Funny.

Check out what Lindsay’s other co-stars are saying. Lohan was unable to promote the film as she’s in court-ordered rehab.

In the picture, the rapper looked much smaller than his normal size but he has revealed that he’s back to his regular weight and is still hitting the gym to regulate his size. “I’m now 210. I was a little fat boy, but I’m back at the gym,” 50 Cent explained to US Magazine. “At my maximum weight I was 214. In the actual film I went to 160. I think the film project is going to be great, not just the transformation and the weight loss but my performance in itself. I’m excited to see it.”

Sure Michelle, a text-in option is perfectly fine. We can have this giveaway set to run next Monday. Unfortunately, I can’t send you the post before it runs because it has to be live on the site in order to be visible to someone who isn’t an admin on our Content Management System.

What I can do is send you the link once it’s live on the site, and have you look it over before we promote the contest or put it on our social networks. Does that sound ok?

Let me know!

Lindsay Lohan has signed on to star in Matthew Wilder’s Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story, about the first porn star to earn mainstream recognition. We got our hands on the script, which is downright harrowing.

As you might expect, the story is full of sex and filthy language — but there's also shocking violence. You'll find child abuse, three orgasms, two beatings, intense humiliation and a bloody car crash — all in the first 32 pages alone.

The first disturbing scene involves a young Linda being smacked in the face by her mother, who also burns her daughter's hand with a Bic lighter. This is page 10 —- in other words, within the first 10 minutes of the film

But the real terrifying stuff happens between Linda and her husband/manager, Chuck Traynor, who humiliates her during a sexual encounter, making her say, “I'm stupid,” and “I'm a fat fatass” as he fingers her and brings her to orgasm.

Just a few pages later, Chuck, wearing big Frye boots, kicks Linda until she is bruised all over, and then, to comfort her, kisses her bruises — then pushes hard down on the bruises as foreplay

From there, things just get worse: Chuck coerces Linda into turning tricks; her first encounter is in a seedy motel with five middle-aged businessmen. One fondles her breast while singing a tune from Mary Poppins. Later in the script, she gets a strange boob job, cooks naked and gets a violent spanking from Chuck. She cries — sobs — while making the legendary film Deep Throat, and has a foursome with Sammy Davis Jr. at Hugh Hefner's Playboy Mansion, where there's also a crowd that urges her to have sex with a German Shepherd. (Linda and the dog, Fritz, do not actually engage in intercourse; Linda gets on all fours and waves her butt in the air and the pooch gets freaked out.)

The story is detailed, vivid and lurid, and some of the lines Lindsay Lohan will recite are a definite departure from her Disney career. For instance:

But the truth is, the script is actually incredibly well-written. If handled properly, it could be a sex/drugs/violence retro classic, in the vein of Boogie Nights. The material is there. But questions remain: Does Lindsay Lohan have the talent to play a confused, controlled, emotionally and physically abused woman trying to claw her way to a normal life? Probably. Will she surprise everyone by turning in the performance of a lifetime? Maybe. Will she show up to the set? Unsure. On all counts, we’ll have to wait and see.

This week was awesome – it flew by – the only bad part was I caught a mini cold – boo! I got stuck in the rain and I got a little under the

weather – all about tea and emergen – c and my friend told me I needed to do the whole gargle salt water thing to help my sore throat which

worked but eventually had to go to the doctors since we are way busy here at THINK PR …

If you ever wondered how the salt water helps the sore throat… here

you go…

So I went to see the movie about Coco & Igor …

See Coco + Igor… I love the styling + the interior design elements of this film. I love Gabrielle Coco Chanel.. I wish she was still alive. It would be my goal to meet her but since that can’t happen…. I just want to learn as much as possible about her and he style.

During the week I also … ate ice cream, watched Empire Records, met OO…

Find O Os work on West Broadway.. 2,500 famous peoples faces… Crazy!!!

And then the next day I saw some friends who I haven’t seen in a while including my friend, Laura, and then I watched the end of the World Cup USA vs ENGLAND and then saw my buddy Lisa and hung out with her and her

kids… so much fun. I also witnessed the annual Hare Krishna Parade right near my apartment. The colors and the dancing were beautiful and for some reason I found this to be a true NYC melting pot experience of

cultures and religions coming together and enjoying the music and dancing. It ended in Washington Square Park and people were still dancing and having FUN!

The next day I went to GOVERNERS ISLAND – you just go to Battery Park (near the Staten Island Ferry) and you pick it up – it is not even a ten min ferry ride and you are there and it is FREE… I went there to see

the FIGMENT art exhibition. It was a bit like “Burning Man” I expect but I saw some cool pieces… here are some photos. My personal favorite was the WISH TREE… it is amazing to see what was wished for – I want to be

a superhero, to be a mom, to be a princess… it was very special … my favorite was one said ROSE … my Grandmother’s name and my middle name.. it was like a mini sign. I liked the fact that ETSY was there

because they were selling goods from new artists which was really smart- I hope it was successful for them.

We will be having more of these dj parties and I am super excited.

I met these kids that just graduated from Marist – I have to say they had the best musical taste all night and I was so excited that they went to my alma mater.

And then I went to see an incredible film called I AM LOVE with someone who I admire so much, Waris Ahluwalia – he is the founder of HOUSE OF

WARIS, an incredible jewelry collection sold at incredible stores likeColette and he has appeared in amazing films and he is just a creative genius. He is also so kind and nice and we didn’t get to talk at the

premiere but we spoke at the CFDA after party and he is just really incredible. Also, in the movie is Tilda Swinton, who is amazing and was perfectly cast for her role. If you can see this movie please go and see

it – the cinematography is incredible, it is filmed in ITALY, and the music and styling is incredible as well. I loved every moment of this film.

WATCH THE TRAILER :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhbTeBneRVU

After the film, I ventured finally to ABC KITCHEN – which was an incredible visual experience – it is a beautiful restaurant and the food is really great as well and the menu is exciting. You should definitely check it out. I was able to catch up with a good friend, Jen and it was

a great night.

I cannot wait for Eat, Pray, Love to come out in theaters! Could there be a better combo than Javier Bardem and Julia Roberts? After seeing the duo on Oprah to promote the August 13 release of the film, I think not! You can see the trailer for the film which is based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s bestseller by clicking here. Throughout the movie Julia Robert carries around one-of-a kind hobo bags from Rising Tide ($140). Each bag is made by artisans in developing countries who earn a fair wage (about 60% more than they would for comparable factory jobs). Further most of the artisans can opt to work from home, allowing them to take care of their families while still earning money. Each Rising Tide Fair Trade product is fair trade, Co-Op America approved, and according to their website a percentage of profits are donated to philanthropic programs that educate and equip under served young women with the skills needed to secure employment or start a business.

There are endless textile prints to choose from. These bags aren’t really my style for my day-to-day NYC life, but I’m going to be traveling to India in December for a wedding and can totally see this being perfect for that trip! I was able to check-out the bags at a beauty event recently (more on that in July on Beauty Snob!), and they’re well-crafted with a round suede base, straps and piping, artisan made brass hardware, and a magnetic snap. I only wish they zipped to make them safer for travel.

Robert Pattinson has landed the role of Kurt Cobain in a film about the grunge-rocker's life, the British newspaper The Sun is claiming. Citing a "source" Britain's largest newspaper says the casting of Pattinson is a key condition for Cobain's widow Courtney Love, who reportedly has a large role in the film's production. "Robert has been calling and emailing her non-stop," the source is quoted in the article.

So wishing I was in Paris to enjoy this. Guess I’ll just have to bear with the online coverage by Diane.

So sad…

Supermodel Naomi Campbell stars in photographer and filmmaker Nick Knight’s film. The film ends with the infamous supermodel firing two handguns. I love it. While Campbell’s violent past could make this film hilarious, the movie’s subject touches on a serious fashion issue. The film’s premise is racism in the fashion industry.

Lately, this seems to be a hot topic. From Italian Vogue’s all black issue to small forums, the industry is taking note of the color void. The silent film addresses the blunt nature of designers, advertisers, editors and agencies who denounce black models for employment. While the film is only two minutes long, it is powerful and resonate.

“By my own inaction, I am guilty of allowing racism to be normalized and accepted in this business. This has made my deeply sad and increasingly angry.” - Nick Knight

View the film here!

The sexy raspy voiced gypsy from A Shaded View of Fashion is curating a film festival. You know all you indies out there who get hard for the newest issues of Fantastic Man and V want to submit, so get ready to film some fun fashion movies.

I think I might actually work on one based around my life shot directly from the perspective of my belt buckle. Exciting, no?

I don’t get why this is such a huge medium for fashion right now. This is probably the third fashion film festival I’ve heard about this month. Can we think of other things to fuse fashion with or are we all out of ideas?

I’d suggest fashion and food. There’s one that’s not done enough.
