I can tell you that the base is patchouli fraction orpur, benzoin Laos orpur, tonka bean and musk, and the heart (a perfume must have a heart that should break, in a way, our heart) is heliotrope (one of my favorite scents), violet and freesia. But I don’t want to be too technical about the fragrance. I prefer a sentimental approach.”  Sounds a bit over the top for our tastes, but being major Lagerfeld fans we have to show our support.  Would you buy it?

The fragrance itself, described as “the ultimate connoisseur’s scent”, was a concoction of pepper, grapefruit, lavender, vanilla, and patchouli (aka light, cool, and a little intimidating).  Former NY Times Scent Editor Chandler Burr walked us through each individual scent in a fun and compelling sniff class that broke it all down.

Who is this man exactly?  GQ Style Correspondent Brett Fahlgren told us that the character behind the scent was “a contemporary charmer, with a spirit of masculinity– a man who is courteous, refined, and cultivated” while the designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana remarked “he is worldly, successful, impeccable, but also boasts something else such as an innate elegance that distinguishes him from the rest”.

More exciting news at the event was the launch of Dolce & Gabbana’s new iPhone app, “Rules for the Modern Gentlman” which was written by Dylan Jones, editor of GQ UK.  The app was designed to cover tips on etiquette (like asking a girl on a date properly), style & grooming (like how to match your patterns), and quick solutions for gentlemanly predicaments (sort of like the how to eat a pork loin off a rib without disturbing the passed appetizers peace).  Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana told us, “The application is a perfect reflection of the scenarios that the Dolce&Gabbana man may find himself encountering; as a modern gentleman he can approach each situation with a sense of poise and confidence that distinguishes him from the rest.”

When looking for the campaign’s face, naturally, the brand turned to Hollywood ladies man: Matthew McConaughey.  The campaign video showed off McConaughey, the one gentleman himself, the morning after an epic celebration (very a la How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days). Still tuxedo clad, he strolls through the party ballroom doing exactly what we would all do after a grand night at a ball, staring into a beach sunset.  How dapper. We recommend the scent for the young and elegant set, the gentlemen of our generation.

The ad is classic Tom Ford, a heaping helping of sex with tongue still firmly in cheek, so it comes as no surprise that the designer cum director also photographed the campaign.

Over breakfast in his store on Madison Avenue, Oscar de la Renta himself introduced us to Esprit d’Oscar, and told us a bit about its creation.

He has garnered a prestigious team of motivated modern women, including his daughter, who helped him to create this fragrance that allows his original scent to transcend time and evolve.

“Today we are dealing with a very different consumer since the time I’ve been working in fashion. Never ever in the history of time has a woman been so in control of her destiny as she is today. And a woman knows exactly what she wants. There has never been a better time for a woman to fulfill her aspirations.”

The design of the bottle stemmed from his first encounters with fragrance making, and is very sentimental for him. It also contains a floral shape like the original Oscar bottle.

“The cap is a flower, not a specific flower, but the image of a flower with a dewdrop. When I was little I didn’t know how perfumes were made. How does one extract the smell from a flower? Well getting up in the morning and looking at the dewdrops, I thought that perhaps if you could collect the dewdrops from the flowers, you could make perfume.”

Expect nothing less than pure elegance. It is crisp, with a hint of citrus that lingers over essences of clean linen and jasmine.

As Oscar de la Renta took my hand and inhaled the scent of his own fragrance on my skin, my body turned to mush, and I realized once again that he is the most elegant man on the planet.

It might be time for O.P.I to sell themselves over. And Coty wants to be on the receiving end! Coty, a perfume seller that distributes fragrances by Sarah Jessica Parker and Vera Wang, is reportedly buying O.P.I. for one billion dollars. And it’s all in cash!

Surprise surprise, Taylor Swift has decided to develop a perfume. Seems like it was only a matter of time. The singer has linked with Elizabeth Arden to develop a scent set to hit store shelves next fall. This can either be really good or pretty unfortunate. I’m going to hope for the former, but I can’t help it be a little skeptical.

Not really sure what Katy Perry was thinking when she designed this. The singer, who is a self-proclaimed “product whore”, might need to come up with some better marketing skills. We get the perfume is called Purr, but a less literal approach may be helpful for the sake of sales.

Though we can’t snag Katy Perry’s perfume yet, she recently shot the ads for Purr with Miles Aldridge.  The photos feature the singer in a purple and pink latex costume said to be inspired by the cat-like ensembles she shows off during her concerts.

Perfume company Ah&Oh has come out with literature inspired perfume packages! The fragrance bottles are all really unique and  modeled after the distinctive characters and stories from Orwell, Poe, De Sade, and Laclos. The whole concept is that just as you “can’t judge a book by its cover”, you can’t judge a perfume by its bottle.

I doubt a perfume can get more French than 1000 by Jean Patou. A decidedly floral chypre that isn’t afraid to smell perfumy and dress up. While this Patou is actually younger than me, it could have easily been released a decade or two earlier with some other iconic Patou scents.

It opens with greens and aldehydes that set the tone and expectations. When you smell aldehydes it often brings an imagery of tailored outfits and perfect hair. Some find them dated, but eventually we learn to appreciate their sunny quality and the way they uplift heavy floral notes and take them beyond a cottage garden. In the case of 1000, the aldehyde keep the green and almost camphor-like opening from becoming too bitter or medicinal. Instead, it’s elegant and sophisticated, making the transition into the floral heart a very interesting one.

I smell roses and a gorgeous more leathery than fruity osmanthus (yes, I’m on a serious osmanthus kick lately). The best part, though, is the subtly animalic base. It’s sexy this confident, worldly way. 1000 is not about showing skin or taking cues from the Kardashians, the woman wearing it will never give paparazzi the money shot. Instead, she gives them a half smile, readjusts the black sunglasses and disappears from their sight.

I want to be that woman.

1000 by Jean Patou ($190, 2.5oz EDP or $275, 0.5oz extrait de parfum) is available in very limited distribution. Here in the states it can be found at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman, including online. I have older bottles of the parfum and the EDT, and I’m not sure if and how they’ve changed the formula in the last decade.

The 2009 relaunch of Futur, a Robert Piguet classic from the 1960s (no idea why it's listed as a 1974 release on Basenotes), smells modern but with decidedly vintage roots. The dry woods are smooth and just a bit peppery and the scent is very gender-neutral. There are no flirtatious frills in its floral heart and there's no sweetness whatsoever. What you do get is a lot of crisp notes and galbanum to thrill lovers of green perfumes.

There’s quite a bit going on there- a hint of chypre (though only a smidgen. Blame IFRA) reminiscent of Vent Vert in its glory days, a very soapy jasmine and some galbanum to show us Futur hails from the same house as Bandit. But while Bandit is a creature of the night, haunted by demons, fetishes and unspoken secrets, Futur is a young and innocent sibling that never forgets to wash behind its ears.

Futur might be the easiest perfume to wear in the modern Piguet line. It’s effortless, elegant and clean in the best possible way. I wish it were stronger and more assertive, but maybe the lack of aggressiveness is part of the charm. Dabbing from samples is not very satisfying, but whenever I spray from a tester it lasts quite a bit, so I hope there’s a full bottle in my future.

I used to hate Tresor with the power of one thousand suns. It was the chemical peach bomb with a side of fake rose that did me in every time. I’d still prefer not to be stuck in an elevator with a person wearing this Lancome perfume, but I (sort of) get it now, and if I had to choose between Tresor and Angel, this Sophia Grojsman creation wins.

The story here is about peach and rose, both are ultra sweet and very powdery. There’s also some violet, which is the finishing touch that makes Tresor so very femme it’s almost a cartoon version of the idea. Sort of Jessica Rabbit in perfume form, just without the irony. But Tresor is also pretty in its own very loud way. I’ve come across a woman or two who pulled it off beautifully, radiating the softness and warmth promised in the ads and in Isabella Rossellini’s face. On them, the harsh synthetic notes disappear, leaving them with all that is good in a rich fruity floral.

A 20 year old cousin who recently played with my perfume collection saw the old(ish) mini of Tresor EDP I keep around for reference and commented that it was her grandmother’s signature scent. She was surprised when I told her Lancome launched this version in 1990 (the original 1950s Tresor was discontinued long before that). When it first came out, Tresor was my sister's favorite. She was in high school and used it with abandon (at one point she also had the lotion and used to layer them). The scent filled the air of her bedroom and wafted in the hallway for a couple of years. It was a slight improvement from the daily fumigation of LouLou that preceded Tresor as her favorite, but not by much.

It’s funny how smelling it now is actually pleasant exactly because it reminds me of my sister in her junior year. She’s going to be here next week and I’ll have her re-sniff it for fun. We’ll see what she’s going to think now, twenty years later.

Tresor ($48.50, 1 oz)  is available everywhere under the sun- from Lancome counters to the usual websites. The formula was probably tweaked at some point but as far as I can tell (without skin testing) the changes weren't very significant and Tresor is still as recognizable and tenacious as ever.

The thing about iris scents is that it’s too easy to make them pale and boring. Unless the perfumer goes all the way with the weirder facets of iris and pairs it with elements that let it fully shine, what you get is too soapy and washed out. Prelude To Love, a Calice Becker composition for By Kilian, barely escapes this fate. It took me a while before I got more than soap and musk out of it, and I still don’t feel a need for more than a decant, but there is enough Prelude To Love to make me enjoy the ride.

From the list of notes you’d expect this perfume to be a citrus bomb. The opening is actually a lot more subtle than that and doesn’t choke you on vitamin C. I smell a dried rind of grapefruit and lemon, slightly bitter, and also a hint of bergamot. There’s no juice and pulp here and very little direct sunlight. It’s more like a reflection of light from a whitewashed wall. Then there’s the iris, clean and well laundered of any earthiness. I usually prefer my iris to bite a little and have a well-worn leather jacket over its crisp white shirt. But eventually I’ve started to enjoy Prelude To Love on all its steam ironed cotton and semi-innocence.

There is actually a soft leather note in the dry-down. You need to pay attention and reach under the clean musk and washed skin, but it’s there. There’s something that feels very French countryside in the summer about Prelude To Love, or at least my imagined French movie scenery, considering all know of France is Paris. But it’s a nice fantasy and a nice perfume, easy enough to wear and with just enough character as to not bore me out of my skull, at least on a hot July day.

Bottom Line: For those who felt cheated by Prada Infusion d’Iris.

Clad in a nude strapless dress and rocking sun-kissed highlights, Jennifer Aniston dazzled the crowd at Harrods as she showcased her sexy and clean new perfume, dubbed Jennifer Aniston – The Debut Fragrance.

Though months ago, StyleList reported the scent was originally called Lolavie, the name apparently changed at the last minute.

“It’s been a year-and-a-half journey. I’d been asked to do things before, and it never felt organic. But when Leon Falic, president of the Falic Fashion Group, approached me to be involved with the process from inception to fruition, I thought, “This could be a creative expression. And it’s turned out to be an extension of myself as opposed to slapping my name on something,” Aniston told WWD.

We’re eagerly awaiting a whiff of her floral eau once it rolls out in the U.S.!

The much-anticipated debut of Jennifer Aniston’s first fragrance is scheduled for July 21 at Harrods. The fragrance was created by perfumers at IFF. Aniston wanted the scent to capture many of her favorite sensory memories from her Southern California childhood. Basenotes reports that the fragrance, which WWD previously stated was to be called Lolavie, has top notes of citrus grove and rose water, middle notes of blooming jasmine, violets and Amazon lily and a base of sensual musk, golden amber and sandalwood. The bottle, shown above lower right, was created by David Lipman who also created the campaign including beachside images shot by Mario Sorrenti. The fragrance will be released in three sizes 30ml – £23, 50ml – £29 and 85ml – £36.

I certainly have no problem with unusual or different, but in the fragrance world that could be pretty worrisome. Roberto Cavalli is ringing in his anniversary with a new fragrance! Anniversary, appropriately named, will celebrate 40 years in the fashion business. “During these first 40 years, I followed the dream of beauty. I created perfumes that applaud female sensuality and give women the possibility to wear a dream,” says Cavalli. The new scent is set to hit stores this October.

Get ready for Miss Pucci, Emilio Pucci’s new fragrance set to hit store shelves this summer. The upcoming installment in the Pucci scent world has been described as a “sparkling floral must”. Laudomia Pucci, the image director, says that the new perfume was created to be “true to the origins of the House of Pucci”. Pick it up in select Sephora stores at the end of August!

Betsey Johnson has signed up to create a line of cosmetics and fragrances. The designer, who “grew up in heavy stage makeup because [she] studied dancing with a brilliant Broadway showgirl,” can’t wait to debut her costume-like cosmetics. Though the makeup is expected to be a show stopper, the fragrance is set to mirror her previous 1982 scent.

I bought my first bottle of Safari by Ralph Lauren soon after it came out because I loved his original Lauren. I also liked the romance behind the name- probably because I was thinking about the imagery in Out Of Africa, Robert Redford and that wonderful scene where he washes Meryl Streep’s hair. In my teenager mind it was the most romantic thing ever (still do, actually. But to this day there has never been a man brave enough to face my 2.5′ of waves and curls). I wanted Safari to evoke just that.

I remember thinking back then that Safari was a little too pretty. I liked it well enough and even finished the bottle (it was the gorgeous lay-down version), but it took me about 15 years to buy another one. Safari didn’t smell like it belonged in the early 90s and I wasn’t sure how it fit with Lauren’s Long Island horsey-set image. It smelled more… French, I guess. The green aldehydic opening, overabundance of flowers and gorgeous chypre base could have easily been a Chanel. Now that I think of it, none of the modern Chanel perfumes from the regular line (not the Exclusifs) has been even half as good as Safari.

I have a few older Safari bottles that are clearly the original formula, including the discontinued parfum. I smell a lot of galbanum and hyacinth which my nearly middle-aged mind translates now as romantic in that heartbreaking, full of longing way. The green and wood notes are dry and crisp and show a lot of elegance and restraint. The patchouli-moss-soft leather base (more pronounced in the parfum) clearly didn’t fit in with the early 90s style- it was too perfume-like in an era of non-perfume opposites: you either had to smell like candy (see Angel and all the horrible mall vanilla and fruit body sprays) or like chemical nothingness (someone please slap Issey Miyake for me). Even the bottle- a vintage looking carved glass beauty- didn’t belong.

It's no wonder that Safari has disappeared from the shelves that sell the Ralph line. For a while it was hard to find except for occasional appearances at places like TJ Maxx. From quick sniffing and spraying the current version at a couple of the discount outlets it's clear that the formula has changed for the very worse. It's a floral something or other without the galbanum, oakmoss or any of the notes that used to give Safari its  backbone. Despite rumors to the contrary, Safari (or what's left of it) is still in production and can be purchased on Ralph Lauren's American website: $60 for the 2.5oz EDP. The notes are listed there as “An exotic medley of floral and citrus notes gently warmed with the essences of Bourgeons de Cassis, Jasmine Italian and Fleur d'Oranger”. I wouldn't bother.
