The Stripe Dyed Skirt: Maggie Ward, $300

This maxi looks straight out of the desert. The flowing chiffon will hit the floor when worn at the waist, but I pulled it up to just below the bust to extend the possibilities of layering. It’s even more comfortable than it looks (if you can imagine), which is designer John Ward’s goal with the brand.

The Nude Lace Top: Pas de Calais, $258

Pas de Calais is a region in the north of France known for its exquisite lace. That is why this Japanese company chose to name the company as such. I chose the top for its delicate nature and the ability to see through it to the under layers – an important factor this season.

The Mesh Metal Bra: Diana Broussard $594

With the metal detailing of the bra and the height of the skirt just showing a sliver of skin at the ribs, this is a classy way to see through a shirt. Having worked under the tutelage of John Galliano at Dior (in the 90’s, pre-drama) and at Gucci designing shoes, Diana Broussard now creates ultra stunning shoes, and a collection that encompasses lingerie like this.

The Sweater as Belt: Pas de Calais, $258

A men’s sweater tied ‘round the waist whispers nonchalance while defining the waist. Luckily, it will keep you warm as the night rolls in chilly later on. The quality of the wool is superfine, as is the tradition of Pas de Calais.

The Skirt as Shawl: Pas de Calais, $298

Whether they know it or not, and they probably do, Pas de Calais has crafted a seriously versatile piece out of this. It hangs as wrap around skirt, meant to sling low. I however threw it over my shoulders as a shawl. I like things that do things.

The Gold Scale Bracelet: Diana Broussard, $590

Like a dragon’s skin of solid gold, this engulfs my forearm in luxury. Broussard has a personal legacy of haute couture houses, of course it’s divine.

The Longest Necklace in the World: Laura B Collection Particuliére $500

Woven gold and silver and other various metals block together to form a necklace, that has the capacity to twist and drape on your body to your desired length. Spanning from neck to shin, I have found my favorite way to wear it. Little fact about Laura Bortolami she was studying law and economy before she met Armani’s primary assistant, which set her on a path to fashion.

As a Fashion photographer for 25+ years, I have had the privilege of being exposed to a wide panoply of incredibly talented photographers and fashion designers. There are several venues around the world that feature young up and coming artists, as well as confirmed professionals. One of the festivals that has been in existence for 25+ years as well is The International Fashion and Photography Festival of Hyères ,France. The Festival runs from April 29th to May 2nd 2011 and the Exhibition runs from April 30th to May 29th 2011.

This year the festival is featuring 10 incredibly talented designers and 10 gifted fashion photographers. I have had a close look at the talent on offer and I must say, I am truly impressed.  The judges are going to have their hands full and I am sure that no matter the outcome, it will be a win win situation for all involved.  Many greats have come out of this festival like Photographer Sølve Sundsbø and Fashion Designers Viktor & Rolf.

What I find interesting is that some of my favorite artists commenced with this festival and have gone on to become Giants in their chosen Art Form.  What I also appreciate is the diversity of those involved in the judging  process of this years festival.  There is a melting pot of individuals from a wide panoply of the creative universal soup.  It is in my opinion analogous to what I experienced when I attended Architectural School in Canada.  None the less, I sincerely, highly recommend you look in to the possibility of attending this rare gem of a festival in one of the most picturesque parts of France.  Don’t miss it.

Look Four: AvaMaria in Wonderland

The Oil Slicker Saddle Heels: Repetto, $250

It started with the Repetto; this time, oil slicked. In the most beautiful way, it looks like a dirty puddle. It was love at first glance. Repetto is famous for ballet shoes, and construct gorgeous others for we non-professional-dancing folk.

The Mini Checker Shirtdress: Cacharel, $178

Ah the shirtdress, blue and gold checked, enhances the hidden hues of the Repettos. So dainty on its own, so innocent, yet vibrant as well. Cacharel took off in the 1960s with its iconic shirtdresses designed by Jean Bousquet. Following in the traditional footprints, they are still prevalent today.

The Kitty Silk Top: Paul & Joe Sister, $228

A shirtdress is a shirtdress, and I couldn’t wear just a shirtdress. I was jazzed to find this complementing silk top that slid underneath the open top so smoothly. The blues dance together and the checks on cats patterns don’t protest too much. Famed French menswear designer Sophie Albou started Paul & Joe in 1995 and branched into les femmes in 2006 with the little Sister.

The Waving Belt: Linea Pelle, $188

The gingham and the shirt came alive together, but the look was still lacking something. Linea Pelle belt corsetry filled that void. With the ends fastened at the back, the shaping quality of waving leather strips brought more shape to the silhouette.

The Flowering Rings: Marie-Lise Lachapelle, gold-plated leaf, $350, silver orchid $375

The silver and golden leafy rings flourished on one hand, enhancing the dual tonal quality of the entire look. Marie-Lise Lachapelle constructs these structures by making molds from actual orchids and leaves. That’s why the metal has so much wildlife in it.

In one of my last trips i went to ” Le Quartier” the contemporary art centre of Quimper ( France) Here I found an exhibition who reflect on childhood plays , and how it´s affect on your growth process. In the expo there was an instalation ,made by Corin Sworn, Nicolas Party and Ciara Phillips, who picked up a few phrases that we have in mind from our childhood. I thought that this was so inspiring! and I took some pictures to share with you

More and more the idea of France becomes more and more a place that I would love to explore. Unless you’re a connoisseur of French rap—and if you are, congratulations—you’ve probably never heard the name Jacques Mesrine. We’ll make it short and sweet: He’s the most notorious criminal in France’s recent history and he’s getting the sprawling biopic treatment this summer with Mesrine: Killer Instinct. If the trailer’s any indication, we should be in for quite a ride.

The man on the poster is Vincent Cassel, probably the biggest movie star in France, and over the course of four hours (split Kill Bill-style into two separate flicks), he’ll commit grand larceny across three continents, ransom a millionaire real estate mogul and mastermind no less than five jailbreaks—four from the inside, and a fifth to rescue friends still behind bars. It’s the latest in a long proud tradition of films about sociopathic machismo (exhibits A and B), and the Gallic undertones and lush staches are just icing on the cake. Consider yourself warned.

More like Bristol in Paris or Paris with a Dab of Bristol…and a first time Paris Street Fashion Stuff Video Below…

I rarely do two posts of this series in one day. In fact I rarely do more than one every two weeks. But walking down rue Tholoze in Paris
(my street), I spotted a great looking couuple. As I approached them, I
could hear that they most definitely were not from Paris. They were
from that island north of France that have been at each other’s throats
for centuries and being a good Canadian, I thought why not “The Couple
from Bristol England in Paris, France…”

They were dressed rather well and could have been from Paris…Well Paris with a bit of that eccentric Anglo twist. Sasha (and I hope I
spelled her name right) was very sweet and graciously allowed me to film
her and her boyfriend Andy.

Sasha’s bag was from Miss Selfridge, her dress, ring and earrings are from Monsoon. Andy’s bag is from Lambretta, shorts from Billabong, shoes from Kurt Geiger and top from the Top Shop.

I know most of us are dreading the face that we have to return to work today, especially after a weekend of partying.  But we have something to take the edge off.  A few of our favorite celebs were out and about this weekend.  Some looked hot while some didn’t even hit the lukewarm mark.  Let’s take a look see!

First up is Adrienne Bailon, who was spotted at the Ace of Spades Loft.

And this mamacita is looking hot!  Rocking this black cut-out dress with a super-embellished waistline, she knew the right thing to do was to downplay the makeup and keep it fresh-faced.  Sky-high black pumps and tousled hair complete her look.

Funny gal Aisha Tyler made her way to the Syfy and Entertainment Weekly party at Comic-Con 2010 this weekend.

While she may not be a red carpet regular, the comedienne pulled off her LBD quite well.  Though I’m a little over the obi-belt trend, it actually works here.  Good look, Aisha!

Swizz Beatz attended Russell Simmons’ 11th annual Art for Life Benefit…

…and I have to say if there’s any way to wear a white suit casually, then this is how it should be worn.  A basic white tee with a handsomely tailored white suit goes a long way.  And while I’m not the biggest fan of white loafers – not in the least- Swizzy rocked ‘em.

John Legend and girlfriend, Chrissy Teigen also came through to show their love for the benefit.

John wore a decent white blazer, white button down and gray pinstripe trousers with white brogues to complete his look.  Pretty dapper is you ask me.  Chrissy went the boho-chic route and opted for an off-the-shoulder maxi dress.  The dress is cute, but hmm… shouldn’t she be slightly worried about a possible “wardrobe malfunction”?  I guess John will make sure it doesn’t happen.

Eva Longoria-Parker struck a pose at the 12th Annual HollyRod Foundation Deign Care Event.

She looks as radiant as ever in this metallic sequined sheath dress.  Eva chose some very subtle bling by opting for a small silver watch and a pair of unassuming diamond earrings.  Classy and oh so chic!

Amber Rose made her way to the Mercedes-Benz Polo Challenge…

…looking painfully pink.  Her dress is cute, and I love the peplum effect going on.  But hmm… a dress in that color with so many patterns doesn’t require a lot of anything else.  Neon pink lips and nails just put her in pink overload, and not in a good way.  And I probably would’ve opted for a soft pink pair of peep-toe Louboutin’s over these Versace sandals.  I’m just sayin’.

And last, but not least, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith have been traveling the globe to show loads of love and support to Jaden’s blockbuster flick, The Karate Kid.  This time…in France at the Paris premiere.

And this is a couple that always shuts it down on a red carpet.  Will looks so statuesque in his black suit and black and white striped button down.  Although he’s wearing a polka-dot necktie, it isn’t the least bit distracting.  It just adds more excitement to the ensemble.  Jada opted for an LBD this go around, but it hugs her curves so well.  And she’s also hopped on the Christian Louboutin Clou Noeud Spiked Sandal bandwagon, but we’re not complaining.

Just in case you weren’t aware, Lara Stone is perfect. Playboy France were kind enough to remind us of this fact when they produced their June 2010 issue featuring a very sexy, very naked Lara. And they didn’t make it too easy for her either, they chose some challenging settings like hideous swirly carpet and a creepy looking wheelchair – but even those were no match for her. Suddenly bad carpets, ankle strappings and hospital robes seem oddly appealing.

Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren—better known simply as Viktor & Rolf—chaired the jury of ITS9, the annual launching-pad competition for young designers in their final year of school, held this weekend in Trieste on Italy’s Adriatic Coast. That made good sense: The designers were themselves launched by a young talent competition back in 1992, at France’s Festival d’Hyères. They were only 23, and their line, such as it was, was young enough that it didn’t even have a name. “I remember when it was announced we had won,” Snoeren recalled. “We were asked to come on stage, but we had no name yet, so they just said: ‘Viktor & Rolf.’ ” And the rest, as they say, is history.

The duo and their fellow jurors settled on Takashi Nishiyama, 23, of Japan’s Coconogacco design school for the Fashion Collection of the Year prize and its €15,000 award. Nishiyama’s collection, with its voluminous layers, was inspired by Monster Hunter, the console video and online game that’s become immensely popular in Japan (above left). South Korea’s Yong Kyun Shin, 28, a student at Central Saint Martins, won the Fashion Special Collection Creativity award (and €5,000) for his complex women’s collection made from tens of thousands of hair pins, some covered with leather (above right.). And Michael Kampe, 23, a student at Belgium’s Hogeschool in Antwerp, took the ITS9 Diesel award, which comes with a six-month internship in design at the company and €25,000. His menswear—perhaps more theoretical than wearable—was inspired by the exploded-view drawings and blueprints used by engineers and the artwork of Naoya Hatakeyama, E.V. Day, Lucy McRae, Florian Baudrexel, and Lebbeus Woods. If you get all of those references, an application to ITS10 should probably be in your future.

Finalist Niels Peeraer, 21, from Antwerp’s Hogeschool, didn’t take an official prize, but he got a pretty nice consolation one: Romain Brau and Anna Kushnerova of Antwerp’s new concept store Ra were so taken with his furs, draped silk jersey minidresses, and men in heels that they’ve promised him an in-store installation and party when Ra hits its first anniversary next fall. “All my friends at school are Japanese, and for as long as I can remember I’ve thought of myself as a geisha,” explains the designer, who has been teaching himself to read and write Japanese. In September, Peeraer will begin his postgraduate studies for a master’s in fashion, but this August he’s taking his dream trip to Japan, crashing with newfound friends picked up on the cheap—at Couchsurfing.org.

LINK LOVE:Viktor & Rolf Select The New Class At ITS9

Earlier this year, photographer and makeup artist Mario Epanya imagined several covers for what would be a future African edition of Vogue. Though there’s a Vogue Nippon, Vogue India, and even a Vogue Australia, there isn’t a Vogue Africa–and Mario was dedicated to changing that.

The last we talked to him, he was pursuing ways to purchase the license to Vogue Africa from Conde Nast International.

Imagine our disappointment when Mario posted the following message on Vogue Africa’s facebook page this past Friday (the post has since been deleted): “DEAR ALL. The Wait is over. Condé Nast said NO to an African license of VOGUE. So this is the last cover. Thanks for all your support. Enjoy, but it’s a beginning of something.”

I had to call Mario up to clarify.

Mario, who is based in Paris, said, “I have a friend who is friends with the head of Conde Nast France.”

“…About a month ago I sent the director of Conde Nast France a message, via my friend, asking how I would go about getting a license for Vogue Africa. He replied that no, it would not be possible to do the project.”

He continued, “It’s ok. Now I feel more free to work on my own projects and concentrate on good, original ideas.”

Interesting.

Conde Nast France is itself a license of Conde Nast International, the originator and creator of the Vogue brand. Does Conde Nast France have the authority to reject Vogue Africa? And shouldn’t Vogue Africa have been discussed in a business meeting instead of via e-mails shuttled between friends?

It sounds to me like the idea hasn’t been given the push it deserves in front of the right people. But maybe people really don’t want a Vogue Africa.

Or do they?

What: Avant-garde composer, master short-story writer.

Why: “Orientalist.” Traveler. Explorer. Tangier’s writer in residence. Paved the way for wanderlusting writers from Tennessee Williams to William Burroughs. Man of the medina. First to record songs of nomads in notoriously harsh Atlas Mountains of Southern Morocco for the Library of Congress; did so, presumably, in perfectly tailored dusty white suit. Also got down with arabesque paisleys to match the pattern of his kif smoke.

How: Rumpled oxford shirt, peak-lapel suits (pinstripe, double-breast, khaki, beige), white shoes, ascots, cigarette holder, circular tortoise shades, luggage.

ERNEST HEMINGWAY

What: Macho bruiser of American letters.

Why: Papa loved to cut a tough-guy profile. Once bragged that he could out-fight, fuck, fish, write, or hunt any other man alive. Image slightly compromised by mad-cat-lady approach to domestic animal hoarding: at last count he owned just less than a kajillion five-toed cats. Still, runways and drinking establishments are awash in looks from the man’s Havana days.

How: Guayabera shirt, cotton shorts, and a daiquiri. Throw in some deck shoes for the fishing trip and some sandals for cocktail hour, and you’ve got yourself an outfit.

GRAHAM GREENE

What: Journalist, globetrotting novelist.

Why: Bipolar, Catholic, and tantalized with the exoticism he experienced in his travels. A Greene protagonist is far from his home, asea in a foreign milieu, scarred and invariably decked in linens for those warmer climes where the palm trees nod and the ceiling fans whirl. His spies, like himself, wore their whites like a uniform and they wore it well. The grizzled vets and expats could get lost with some native camouflage-cotton short sleeves, enjoying a moment as we speak.

How: Savile Row white suits, crisp white shirt, black or two-tone dark stripe tie (or bow tie), Panama hat, John Lobb oxfords, Blueblockers, plastic-frame aviators.

F. SCOTT FITZGERALD

What: Great. American. Novelist.

Why: Jazz age lush lived fast, died young(ish), wrote like Mozart played the piano. Addicted to glamour and champagne; chased both from Hamptons to South of France to Hollywood. A preppy (way before preppy) with panache. Pleated prohibition lines on suits whiter than snow. Newsboy caps. Plaid.

How: Bright-colored Brooks Brothers suit, two-tone spectators, floppy golf cap, bright tie, colored shirt. No green light.

To get fashion fans in the mood for love, Alternative Apparel has created an original video that will play in NYC taxi cabs throughout fashion week, from February 11th until the 18th.

The film is called “Kinds of Love,” and was inspired by the real romance between famed French crooner Serge Gainsbourg and wild child songstress Jane Birkin. The short 30-second video will not only showcase Alternative Apparel’s spring 2010 styles, but it pays homage to the vibrant, eclectic culture of 1960′s France.

In light of the new fragrance for women named Flower, Kenzo planted 200, 000 Poppy flowers in Toulouse, France! The art installation is set up in the center of Place du Capitole. After this we might just have to give Flower a try, I mean look at the effort people!

Word has it Nina Ricci is launching yet another fragrance! The new perfume, Ricci Ricci, will hit its first store shelves this August, but that’s just in France. The international debut will take place sometime in September. Guess you have to take the trip or wait it out!

Well, slap me in the ass and call me Susie, cause I’ve been a bad boy for not paying attention to opening ceremony last night. Every nation presented their athletes in matching outfits and I think I can definitely crown a bronze, silver and gold medal for the looks that took the cake.  Far from what I expected, opening ceremony showcased some major style trends I’d be more than willing to imitate. Check out my picks for top prizes and some honorable mentions below.

GOLD – The Netherlands: I never jumped onto piping when I saw it a few years back in a collection of Carlos Campos, but now I’m sorry I didn’t. This look is very playful yet professional and really matches the spirit of their country. Definitely a look that would make the pages of The Satorialist.

SILVER – France: The men looked dapper and the women shined with a belted ensemble that helped me remember why I loved berets so much.  What’s best is that this is a look that would be thoroughly endorsed in Paris, I’m pretty sure I saw at least one Parisian rock this at a recent visit to the city of love.

BRONZE – America: Oh, Ralph Lauren. How badly you want to emulate what an American should look like. I wish this is how we dresses cause it’s so painfully prepster hip that I instantly want to take a drive to the Hamptons and party with someone named Blake or “Insert Name Here” The Third.

The American look with the prep school innocence makes long for the 30′s again. Great job on making us look good Ralphie.
