Cannes Film Festival Trend Alert: Bodacious Black Ball Gowns

Luxurious yachts, one-of-a-kind gowns and priceless diamonds are all common sights at the annual Cannes Film Festival. Every May, celebs from all around fly to the French Riviera for one of the most prestigious art gatherings of the year. We are obviously watching the Cannes red carpet quite closely, and the fest was kicked-off with a dazzling display of black ball gowns. From sleek and simple to intricate and gothic, here are seven celebs donning marvelously dark dresses.

The Stars Come Out at Elle’s Night of Women in Hollywood

Actresses and female filmmakers threw on some Calvin Klein and converged at the Beverly Hills Four Seasons Monday night for Elle magazine’s annual “Women in Hollywood” event. Twas a mutual admiration society as Barbra Streisand, Michelle Pfeiffer, Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow, Laura Dern, Viola Davis, Naomi Watts, Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston mingled with the new kids on the block, including Evan Rachel Wood, Freida Pinto, Elizabeth Olsen, Amanda Heard and Chloe Moretz.

Olsen cherished meeting Pfeiffer, whom she claims was “one of the reasons I wanted to become an actor.” While Wood remembered brandishing a jump rope as a whip pretending to be Catwoman, like every little girl — or sexually-confused little boy — did after seeing Pfeiffer claw up the screen in Batman Returns.

Pinto, meanwhile, gushed over a crushed velvet-wearing Streisand: “I can’t believe you are right here in front of me. You’re not only a legend in Hollywood, but literally all over the world. I can say that because I come from India.” Streisand wasn’t short on praise — she never is, if everyone knows what’s good for them. Bigelow, the first woman to win a Best Directing Oscar, praised Babs as “somebody who has mastered virtually every art form imaginable: directing, acting, composing, singing, producing, writing.”

The legend, however, was quick to point out that out of the 250 films released last year, women directed only 7 percent and wrote only 10 percent. Aside from the glass ceiling behind the camera, Viola Davis emphasized diversity in front of it — or lack thereof. “You don’t always love what you do,” she said during her speech, “but what keeps me in the business is hope, and that’s the hope that women of color are also part of the narrative.” [WWD]

All together now: “STUNNING!” Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott are apparently the only working fashion photographers these days, scoring yet another gorgeous cover for Interview, this time with the always editorial Anne Hathaway for their “Fall Fashion Issue.”

Are you there vodka? It’s me, anticipation. Hathaway is interviewed by bawdy bitch-and-a-half Chelsea Handler so I’ll be waiting with breath more bated than usual for my issue to turn up at my door. And with Karl Templer handling the styling duties, this should be one of the highlights of the September issue season.

Meanwhile, if you direct your attention to the lower left hand corner you’ll notice that Carine Roitfeld was interviewed by Karl Lagerfeld. No big deal, except perhaps being the best thing ever. But again, no big deal. [Design Scene]

Anna Wintour has been credited/blamed/lauded/criticized for the current proliferation of celebrity-driven magazine covers of the past 15 years or so. Love it or hate it, a model has a better chance winning a Pulitzer than landing a U.S. Vogue cover — with a few notable exceptions. While stars are rightfully and contractually beautiful, however, not all of them can cut the couture mustard. Then there are those ladies who love the camera and the camera is kind of obsessed with them. Here, the 10 actresses who give the best editorial — and give models a run for their money — are given the countdown treatment.

Teen Vogue’s 50 Best Dressed of 2010

Teen Vogue named Alexa Chung the best dressed celebrity of 2010, followed by a series of questionable choices. Choices that raised questions like “Who let Katy Perry (#35) anywhere near a best-dressed list?” And “Who are half of these alleged celebrities?”

Lea Michele (#5), Kristin Stewart (#7) Taylor Swift (#8) and Olivia Palermo (#9) somehow all made the top 10. I know this is Teen Vogue, but let’s raise the bar a little and maybe swap ‘em out for Emma Watson (#16), Keira Knightley (#20), Chloë Sevigny (#18) and Freida Pinto (#21).

Though I will say that I am glad that Kelly Osborune (#25) made the list. She’s really come into her own style, plus I love her with Joan Rivers on E!’s Fashion Police. If only they would get rid of that damned orange skeleton, Giuliana Rancic.

Meanwhile, three out of four Gossip Girls made the top 50: Leighton Meester (#19) and Jessica Szohr (#32), however (non-teen) Vogue‘s Best Dressed cover girl Blake Lively has to settle for #23. Anna‘s other Angels, Anne Hathaway (#49) and Sienna Miler (who is apparently still considered a celebrity) bring up the rear.

Ever since her breakout role in Slumdog Millionaire, I’ve been captivated by Freida Pinto’s piercing and, for lack of a better word, ‘exotic’ beauty. This beauty, and her grace and style, are reminiscent of 70s style icon, muse actress and the first Mrs. Jagger, Bianca.

Bernadin gives the shoot a strong 70s aesthetic while Campbell outfits the lovely actress in a wardrobe that would not look out of place at 54. And Freida is as beautiful as ever.

Being that this is Pinto’s first movie and that she’s already getting attention for the powers that be at Helle, I’m sure this is one fashionista your going to want to pay attention to.
