Converse, in collaboration with (PRODUCT)RED and acclaimed artist José Parlá, will roll out a limited edition of its iconic Chuck Taylor All Stars to commemorate World AIDS Day this Thursday, December 1. Only 500 pairs will be available, with 10% of sales benefiting The Global Fund to help eliminate AIDS in Africa.

Brooklyn-based Parlá is known for his distinctive style that blends calligraphy, collage, textures, and color in paintings that tackle politics, urbanization, current events and a slew of other complex topics.

To grace the special pairs of Converse, Parlá chose his painting “Ephemeral Pitches, and Notes, Rhythm and Phonetics,” which — inspired by abstract noises, music, rhythms, languages and sounds of cities — explores the constant changes to urban life. Those themes are particularly resonant for Parla, who grew up wearing Chucks as a kid.

Sweating the Shop: Nervous Retailers Gear up for Black Friday

Black Friday — that ugliest and most desperate of shopping days, in which consumers buck all self-respect and dignity while elbowing each other about the face and throat to secure the lowest price on a crock pot — is once again upon us. Analysts are predicting this to be the blackest Black Friday in history, with sales for the first time reaching $20 billion. With dollar signs in their eyes, retailers are planning to be as accommodating as possible to separate you from your hard-earned money before the turkey even gets a chance to settle in your colon. Happy Holidays!

Wal-Mart is opening at 10 pm on Thanksgiving, but before then, the megachain will give shoppers the chance to sign up for a preview of its Black Friday catalogue. Right on its heels is Macy’s, which will open at midnight on Black Friday with hundreds of “doorbuster” sales. Sears decided to stay closed on Thanksgiving this year – “There was a sentiment from customers to keep Thanksgiving as a holiday,” (of all the concepts) according to a division vice president — but will offer scannable billboards around the country to encourage mobile shopping. Ignoring Sears and their observance of Turkey Day, Gap Inc. will open 1,000 stores this Thursday, 800 alone of which are Old Navys.

Despite the extended store hours and doorbustery promotions, the appeal of Black Friday is waning. “The ‘big day’ isn’t the ‘big day’ anymore,” David Bassuk, managing director and head of AlixPartners told WWD. “It’s been diluted with earlier and earlier hours and even Brown Thursdays. There’s still some allure to getting up early and hunting for bargains, but we’re starting to see more and more retailers who are telling the consumer, ‘Stay home and get your sleep. We’ll send you what you need so you can still get the best deal.’”

What’s more disturbing: the fact that retailers are so desperate to make Christmas dough they’ve created a Brown Thursday or the fact that they insist on calling it “Brown Thursdays?” And will you indulge in the shopping frenzy this Friday or will you be too busy fighting your way through a turkey coma? For this week’s Men Trends we tackle one of our favorite prints: plaid. Keep reading guys to see how you can dress this trend without looking like a rogue scotsman.

A label which started this trend would definitely have to be Kenzo. During their Fall 2011 RTW show (aka my future fashion week closet) they sent many plaid and tartan designs down the runway. This trend can certainly go very wrong if not executed correctly. You can either look amazing like Hamish Bowles or look like a confused catholic school boy.

For starters a plaid shirt or accessory such as a necktie or dress sock is a perfect way dip into the shallow end of the trend and see if it’s really for you. You can never go wrong by wearing a really understated outfit and having that one plaid piece that pops.

Fall Behind the Scenes at Gap

For their fall campaign, Gap won’t be featuring any dancers, models or celebrities; rather, they’re sharing an inside look at their operations and the people who run it all.

Ogilvy & Mather and Cool Hunting created 30 short videos, each 20 to 90 seconds long, profiling members of the Gap 1969 denim studio in Los Angeles, as well as going behind the scenes of the design and manufacturing process.

“Increasingly, people want to know the stories behind the products — who’s designing it, where it comes from,” said Seth Farbman, Gap’s global chief marketing officer. “We recognize that we have to be more open. We had not done enough storytelling about what was new and different at the Gap.”

The videos debut this week at Cool Hunting and Refinery29 followed by sponsored content next week on DailyCandy, FabSugar, Hulu, Pandora and Gap’s Facebook page among other sites.

The print ads will star “real-ish” [read: a half-inch short of model] people in Gap 1969 pants and will run in the September issues of seemingly every mag including Vogue, Elle, Glamour, Nylon, Details, GQ, Rolling Stone, Marie Claire and ESPN. [WWD]

Guys Guide To Memorial Day Weekend

Today is the last day before Memorial Day & the summer season officially begin. Many guys are headed out for the weekend whether it be The Hamptons, the Jersey Shore, or Fire Island. We’ve created a guide to let you know what kind of bag to take and what to throw in it this weekend.

The Hamptons is going to be swarming with the rich and fabulous. It is important that you always look posh and put together even if you’re getting plastered in the middle of the day. I recommend this Ben Minkoff weekender. It’s simple, durable, and can hold a champagne bottle or two. (And yes I know from experience.) One of your essentials should include a Ralph Lauren polo. (The staple of the prep wardrobe) An Orlebar Brown bathing suit is the way to go shorts wise. (Even if you’re not swimming you can wear these as shorts all day and look stylish.) Finally you’ll need a pair of Sperry boat shoes. (Duh!) Don’t forget to bring a blazer just in case and daddy’s credit card.

The Jersey Shore is always a hot spot during the summer months and Memorial Day weekend is probably one of the craziest times it gets. As a Jersey native I have to say that people were going to down the shore (As we Jerseyans put it) before Snooki and The Situation took over with a camera crew. That being said a Quiksilver duffle is what you want to pack. It can take a beating and be fulled to over capacity with all your weekend needs. While you’re at the beach or walking on the boardwalk these American Eagle shorts have both fashion and function without calling negative attention to whoever is wearing them. Speaking of the boardwalk you can stroll comfortably down it in these Ugg sandals. Lastly you’ll need something nice to impress at the club and an Armani Exchange dress shirt will do the trick. Just make sure you’re tan and party ready.

Fire Island is a major gay destination on the East Coast if you didn’t know. The island is known for it’s nonstop parties and debauchery. If you go this Rag & Bone bag says “I’m here, I’m queer, & I have taste: Get Used To It!” I recommend packing light since it seems that many of the people running around are not in that much clothes. That’s why this Baskit trunk is totally appropriate. There are a lot of outdoor activities so go for a pack of American Apparel tanks so you have something light and simple that can transition from day to night. Finally I recommend these GAP flip flops:they’re inexpensive, versatile and perfect for a beach day. Remember to leave your heavy layers and inhibitions behind.

Gap Minds Its Sales Gap

On the heels of dismissing chief designer Patrick Robinson, Gap Inc. is addressing the gap in international and online sales — which are growing rapidly and expected to make up 30 percent of revenue by 2013 — and North American sales — which…not so much.

The company’s chairman and CEO Glenn Murphy outlined some initiatives to get the Gap back on track, such as downsizing on their number of stores, striking a better balance between Gap and its “value channel” (read: cheaper, less attractive sister) Old Navy and nearly doubling the number of global franchises by 2014 or sooner ( including the inevitable expansion into China).

I’m assuming finding a new designer fits into that grand scheme somewhere… [WWD]

Spring is upon us and you know what that mean: bikini season is officially around the corner. This means it is time to hit the gym from here on. working out can be a drag but don’t let your outfit reflect that. Here are some great tips on how to look cute and stay on trend while working up a sweat.

The Camisole: The camisole is one if the most basic pieces to your spring gym wardrobe. It should be fitted enough to show your body but not too tight because you still have to workout. It’s best to pick one out in a neutral color so you can transition them into your regular wardrobe when you aren’t in the gym. Gap and Valentino Unveil Full Collection

Just as drama of Lanvin for H&M has subsided and the novelty worn off, it’s time to for Gap to debut its own collaborative collection with Valentino—on Black Friday, no less.

Although, given that the capsule collection will only be available in select European stores, I suppose the choice of Black Friday as the launch date is inconsequential. (Is there a European Black Friday? After all, Europe as a continent does not celebrate Thanksgiving.)

Regardless, the seven-piece collection will be available this Friday, November 26 and features three parkas, a tiered skirt, cargo pants, a grey t-shirt and a hoodie in shades of army green, cream and black. Gap’s New Logo Makes Me Sad

If the people over at Gap think the brand’s new logo will be as recognizable and iconic as the original, blue box they carried for so many years, they are greatly mistaken.

Why didn’t Gap announce this as a big revision? Are they secretly ashamed they changed the logo from a cultural icon to a piece of crap I could have done in my sleep? Brand Channel has some insight on to why this mutation may have occurred:

“But ditching the classic logo, recognized by everyone, in favor of whatever that new monstrosity is, demonstrates a prototypical brand panic move. With things not going in its favor, the brand decides to change the one valuable element it has going for it. Ironically maybe, the new logo is perfect for the brand. It communicates exactly the values currently embodied by Gap: A sense of being lost and a lack of clear vision and creativity.”

Well said! And as much as I love Helvetica, Gap didn’t need to use it like everyone else. They’re not fooling anyone by using a “hipper” font and design for their logo. Maybe the design team should be working a little harder on the merchandise if they want to acquire a new, younger customer.

Pina Ferlisi Named Creative Director of McQ

Alexander McQueen‘s more casual and affordable diffusion line, McQ, now has a new creative director after the death of McQueen in February.

According to Vogue UK, Pina Ferlisi, formerly the creative director of Generra, was tapped for the position and will report to Sarah Burton, the new creative director of the Alexander McQueen label.

Besides the hip contemporary brand Generra, whose creative directors are now husband-wife team Swaim and Christina Hutson of the defunct Obedient Sons and Daughters, 44-year-old Canadian Ferlisi has logged time as executive vice president of design at Gap from 2003 to 2006, where she is noted for revamping the brand.

Before that, she was creative director of Marc by Marc Jacobs from 1998 to 2001 and also held the same title at Coach.

One of Ferlisi’s first jobs was working alongside Marc Jacobs at Perry Ellis, where she stayed for three years and worked on the infamous “grunge collection” that got Jacobs booted from the company, reports The Guardian.

After Ferlisi declined to join Jacobs when he launched his eponymous label (“I’m more of a casual-clothes kind of person, so that wasn’t really me,” she said of her reasoning), she worked at Tommy Hilfiger before eventually teaming up with Jacobs again on the debut of his now uber-popular diffusion line.

Just what she’ll do with the 4-year-old McQ label, which hinges on “the essence and spirit of youth and subcultures. The concepts of anarchy, rebellion, and revolution,” we’ll have to wait and see.

WOOHOO!!! Just back from my 3rd official fashion event so far!!! THIS IS SO EXCITING! I can’t believe all this is actually happening to me!

Anyways, tonights event was at Raffles City, entitled…

Your Style Unleashed

Experience Fashion Up Close And Personal This Season!

And quite literally… the fashion was UP CLOSE and personal this time round! Remember how in the previous post I
mentioned that Daniel Boey feels that fashion shows are passe… That
they’re becoming useless as designers and producers find new and
innovative ways to showcase their collections?

Well this time round, Daniel Boey did something about that! He was commissioned by Raffles City to re-conceptualise fashion shows and
figure out a new way to showcase the clothes of almost every label in
Raffles City! (which is mostly just fast fashion blahblingblongboom)

And so… instead of doing normal fashion shows, Daniel Boey decided to experiment with a new method of showcasing the clothes!
Fashion Busker! Or however you spell that word!

Which meant that there was NO RUNWAY! Rather… the models would strut their stuff around the
ENTIRE shopping mall, posing here and there, making it look informal and
unrehearsed, working (selling) the clothes, while carrying signs with
the labels they were walking for written on them… and essentially just
making fashion more relatable to the public. (a.k.a bring the clothes
right up into their faces to look pretty so that they’ll be enticed to
buy them!) VERY VERY COMMERCIAL! I guess because this event largely
consisted of fast-fashion-labels.

*They not only went to all the other floors!*

*but even outside!*

And all this was of course punctuated with a few entertainment acts like
dancers, singers and magicians. HMM.

*GOD I LOVE THE REMIX!*

If it sounds like it was a circus… that’s because it was. For me at least.

Firstly, let me clear things up. I think that this event was innovative and definitely
achieved its goal. It was a fashion event not for the top couture
houses to impress industry professionals and high society… but rather a
commercial fashion event by fast-fashion-labels to bring the clothes to
the consumers (and to hopefully sell their stuff). And I think Daniel
Boey perfectly understood that. The average consumers of
fast-fashion-labels don’t necessarily have to sit down, look at every
minute little detail of the clothes and soak up every drop of the
collection. They don’t really care about the mood of the collection, or
the inspiration, or anything in detail really. Average consumers of
fast-fashion-labels just want things that are haute, that are trendy and
that are essentially all nice and pretty. All they need is a glimpse of
the clothes to see if they like it or not… They don’t need a bloody
catwalk show to persuade them! Rather, an event like this was perfect
for them! Really bringing the fashion out to the people… directly to
the consumers.

HOWEVER! Personally, I hated the event (though I have to thank Daniel for
inviting me and being so nice to me!). Having a “fashion busker” in the
middle of a crowded shopping mall during peak hour in tight spaces with
people pushing around, models strutting so fast and going everywhere
gets pretty disorientating! It was intense, insane and merciless! I mean
quite literally there was very very little time to take in everything
because…

There were so many people moving around… you either got pushed or disturbed, or just distracted.
The models were moving really fast. And while they may have stayed at a position for like 5 minutes, I still felt uncomfortable and
confused because there was just so many things going on!
Because the models were moving around so much… and there was no one centralised area to focus on, it got pretty crazy! MEANING! It was
so hard to take pictures that I sort of became all paparazzi like and
had to do funky stuff to get the pictures!
I was DAZED&CONFUSED and thus can’t really remember any off the clothes to review. Besides all of them were fast-fashion thingums
which you can probably see everywhere.

Also, I think I didn’t like it because personally I’m not that kind of average fast-fashion-label consumer who just wants to look
pretty and trendy and nice.

I’m definitely more the kind of guy who loves fashion as a whole, who doesn’t just want to look
good and pretty, but rather wants to have a conducive environment to
review a collection, to scrutinize every minute detail, to understand
the concept or themes or messages in the collections, to completely
immerse myself in that 15 minutes when a collection is shown to me!
*Pretends to be some fashion-reviewer person. Okay fine that didn’t
work.* TO CELEBRATE FASHION!

And that’s why I still think that fashion shows aren’t passe! Because
they’re still the only effectively way to truly appreciate fashion in
its finest forms for the people who truly love fashion and treat it with
utmost respect. Fashion shows are the platforms to channel the
concepts/messages/inspirations of collections to industry professionals
and buyers! Buyers who are also passionate about fashion and can see
beyond clothes just being clothes. Fashion shows are essentially, a
celebration of fashion! And I doubt anything can replace that. Not even
the internet! (Though many houses/designers are now starting to
broadcast their shows live, most of it is still buggy and laggy!)

Again, don’t get me wrong. I think Daniel did a great job with this event,
understanding the objective and concept perfectly, and executing it
exceptionally (except of course for those signboards with the brand
names on them which were in such bloody squiggly fonts that I couldn’t
read shit).

HOWEVER! It is the very nature of these kind of fashion events which I hate; Because they
are intrinsically commercial, and you guys know I hate commercialism, I
HATE THEM! They aren’t about treating fashion as an art form and
celebrating it… I doubt they are even about great clothes! It’s just
all about creating that image to entice the consumers to buy their
stuff; All in a gimmicky fashion of course, which most of the time is
executed through styling. And I think that’s why the fast-fashion label
clothes always look so great at these kind of events (heck sometimes
they even look as great as designer pieces!) BUT when you go into a
fast-fashion store like Topshop or Zara… you just get bored out of
your bloody wits because the clothes are so darn boring. It’s not the
pieces which are great… but it’s the styling which is insidious! It’s
like listening to Ke$ha you know? Her songs are really shitty when it
comes to depth or any real meaning at ALL! But it’s the annoyingly
hypnotic beats which bamboozle you… in a very VERY gimmicky fashion.
Like your body starts flailing and grinding on the dance floor when her
beat comes on… but you feel like crap because you know that her songs
are really superficial and dumb. (And that’s why I didn’t review the
clothes. Not that I had any chance to do so since everything was so
confuzzling anyways!)

OVERALL though! While I completely detest these kind of events now, I do enjoy
the fact that people like Daniel Boey and probably other runway
producers are exploring other ways to make fashion more accessible and
to bring fashion closer to the public. And I think that events like
these, “fashion buskers”, are great for commercial purposes… to sell
fast-fashion clothes to the average Joe and Jane.

But whether fashion shows are passe… I’m still a traditional biatch and
do believe that fashion shows remain the optimum platforms to showcase
serious, designer collections for serious, professional audiences who
truly love fashion and see beyond commercialism… or that clothes are
simply clothes. Because I don’t see any other platform which gives
fashion that much respect as an art form… and which allows us to
celebrate it in its finest forms!

THE CATWALK IS PERENNIAL BIATCHES!

Oh but the night didn’t end there! Daniel was so nice as to even take me BACKSTAGE! Ohmahgod! Which was really
unglam and gross… and I got to see the RAW-R side of fashion…

Haha! DOG POO!!!

Okay fine maybe not. But they’re hairballs thingamajigs that the models literally STUCK onto their hair.
Yupp very very unglam.

(Cheap and crude remember? That’s what happens to these type of commercialised
events)

I must say that going backstage was far better than the event itself! It opened my
eyes and let me see the other side of fashion.

SO THANK-A-YOU Daniel for being so nice to me and even taking me backstage…giving me tips and information.

Anyways people! Great experience tonight! And I’m going for another fashion show tomorrow hosted by Elle Singapore at Parco Marina
Bay around 3pm!

HEYA PEEPZ! Yes I’m still on cloud nine because things have been going prettayyy well lately! We’re all still up here dancing to Imogen
Heap and trying to re-enact Lady Gaga’s Telephone music video! This time
round, I’m the one with the telephone-hair-wig and feeding everyone
honey-poison! RAWR!

Well anyways! God has been really kind to me lately, and given me freaking INSANELY AWESOME opportunities
in terms of my fashion endeavours! Like allowing me to get tickets to
fashion shows, just to oversleep and realise that I missed them! (LIKE
THE ASHLEY ISHAM ONE YESTERDAY!) And allowing me to get that feature in
Elle Singapore… *OH MY JABBERWOCKY! I STILL CAN’T BELIEVE IT!* Maybe
I’m actually in some drug-induced dream-like state, being kept
underground for cloning experiments by some secret organisation… and
they’re a really sadistic bunch of people who want to induce
fashion-dreams into me, so that I’ll believe all of it is really
happening… and then I suddenly wake up and WHAM! They slam a door in
my face and remind me that I’m fat. NOOOOOOOO!!! Well, since I’m already
delusional and prone to hallucinations in real life already, who cares
if this isn’t reality?

Anyways! Things have been going well! I’m really excited, and this is a really exciting time for my
blog as well! And I think I owe it to my readers! Thank-a-you all you

Independent bi-annual magazine, Lurve exists as a visually striking piece of material putting an emphasis on emerging new talents in all creative fields. Editor Lyna Ahanda attempts to bridge the gaps between fashion, arts and music with beautifully varied content. Whilst exploring contemporary culture beyond the mainstream, they refuse to conform to the trends. With their upcoming third issue they explore the human body to allow the model to be more than a clotheshorse, featuring Terence Koh, Cecile Bortoletti and Carlotta Manaigo. We speak to Ahanda on how it all came about…

Dazed Digital: Why did you start Lurve Magazine?
Lyna Ahanda: I have always been a militant, but unfortunately I’ve picked up art instead of politics. Starting Lurve was about creating something that could change things. Bringing back fashion and art together.

DD: What does it offer readers that other bi-annual fashion magazines don’t?
Lyna Ahanda: A visual aesthetic that is not restricted to the trends, where models of differing colours are part of the system.

DD: What is your background, in Fashion/Journalism/Arts?
Lyna Ahanda: I have studied Art History in Paris, then English at la Sorbonne. I have a Masters degree in Journalism and Creative Writing. I have also contributed as journalist to a number of independent magazines, websites and newspapers.

DD: What’s the story behind the name?
Lyna Ahanda: Lurve comes from a conversation between Dianne Keaton and Woody Allen in “Annie Hall” as if lurve was a higher form of love.

“Do you love me? Love is too weak a word. I lerve you. You know, I lo-ove you. I luff you. There are two “f’s.” I have to invent… of course I love you.”

My idea was then to create a publication that will be less hermetic to the real world, a magazine that would be challenged by a wider cultural current and that will be able to show our love to fashion and even more.

DD: What is going in your next issue?
Lyna Ahanda: The theme of our third issue is ‘beyond the body proper’. We are trying to explore the concept of the body as an envelope allowing the model to be more than a simple way to display clothes. In a series of editorials with Terence Koh, Chadwick Tyler, Cecile Bortoletti and Carlotta Manaigo, the models are taking part in this sort of role play.

As a salute to Spring and an homage to Pina Bausch, models reinterpret Stravinsky’s ‘Le Sacré du Printemps’ (The Rite of Spring’) choreographed by Bausch, wearing pieces from Damir Doma’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection. The story was art directed by Begum Boré and photographed by Terence Koh. The Carlotta Manaigo story was inspired by Eadward Muybridge’s ‘human movement’ plates, and the shoot is a metaphor representing a birth, and blossoming new life. Whilst the Cecile Bortoletti cover story is her own take on Francis Bacon’s “Three Studies for A Self-Portrait.”

DD: How do you pick your content?
Lyna Ahanda: I have worked a lot with art director Begum Boré on this issue. We wanted to work around the theme of the body: body image, and the body’s limit but also plays with seasons as this is our Spring issue. We went from this idea of describing the body as a political and social weapon to something more poetic and pure, using different types of people, stranges and unique beauties.

RUNWAY RUNDOWN: Alexander Wang Resort 2010

Alexander Wang went a bit all-American prepster for his Resort 2010 collection…and I must say, I’m not terribly happy about it. I’m not used to Wang using light-wash denim, except in his leather/denim combo jacket from Spring 2009…which strangely reappeared in this collection. I’m not trying to make excuses for Wang on this one, but perhaps we should blame this so-so collection on Wang’s recent work with the Gap. On a more positive note, I do like the oversized hole sweaters and the nautical striped sweater with the sequins skirt.

Good job on the ethnic diversity, but the ads are a little busy — and it’s traditional GAP spring, with the colors, khakis, and denim.

The Mikael Jansson-shot ads feature familiar faces like Sasha Pivovarova and Jessica Stam.

Gap, The Shitty Retailer That Ruined Christmas

Gap manages to fuck up the holidays once again with a series of videos which make me a) wish I had a bullet for Jon Heder’s and Jason Biggs face, b) pray that Freddy Rodriquez would quit giving Puerto Roc’s a bad rap by looking like a tan midget, and c) hope that one day the GAP goes bankrupt so that we don’t have to be subjected to such shitty attempts at marketing. Seriously, I would rather listen to a choir of trache patients gargling days old throat phlegm than have to hear these attempts at Christmas carols ever again.

Below are some lowlights…

Rainn Wilson reminding us that his 15 minutes are officially up and Selma Blair showing us just how desperate she’s gotten since her divorce in their rendition of “Baby It’s Cold Outside”.

“We 3 Kingz” was shitastically performed by a beaner (seriously refuse to claim this one as one of mine), the African-American fellow (see we can be politically correct sometimes) from Weeds, and a jew who decided to sell out his heritage for $100 in Gap cash. Of course at some point the tannest of the group has to throw in some beatboxing to throw off the whitey. Thank you Gap for maintaining racial profiling in all your marketing campaigns.

Janelle Monae, the only bright spot in this whole campaign, attempts to ignore Napoleon Dynamite as he dances around like an idiot in his striped CRAP sweater. Seriously, when was the last time this dude left his house without a helmet and a ticket to ride the short bus. (P.S. Anti-Gay Right Morman’s Suck Assneck Jon).

My assumption is that Trey Songz and Flo Rida fulfill the Gap’s gay spokesperson quota cause these two are definitely kickin it on the downlow. Honestly, these two are gayer than the dude from Reading Rainbow eye-socket fucking the blind black dude from Star Trek. Oh wait, their the same guy?!? Shit that’s a weird visual. Seriously though does Chris Brown know he has a twin out there stealing all his endorsement money?

Okay, wasn’t sure who any of these people were at first. Apparently one is a comedian who once showed Madonna the labia licking ropes and the others are a group of country singers better known for alienating their entire fan base by talking smack about the President. So basically, they hate Bush while she just can’t get enough…
