On magazines: “It shocks me when young kids still say, ‘I want to do a magazine.’ Really? Do you want to do a magazine because you want to be an editor — what you think that life is, that romance — or do you want to communicate? Because if you want to communicate, why the fuck would you put all those obstacles in your path and have to print pages, as opposed to going right on the Internet and actually communicating?”

On being seated front row at a D&G show along with Garance Doré, Tommy Ton and Bryanboy in 2009, where they were all given laptops on podiums: “They got a humongous amount of press. ‘Look, we brought the bloggers in and gave them the front row. Look at the dancing-monkey bloggers!’ I could barely bring myself to sit down…Like, ‘Ugh, I don’t want everyone looking at us.’ Like, ‘Oh, look at the cute bloggers! Isn’t that cute! Are they playing Angry Birds?’ When you’ve got Ron Frasch [president and chief merchandising officer of Saks Incorporated] behind you going, ‘I spent two fucking million dollars on D&G’s last collection, and I’m sitting here? For these little schmucks?’”

On being introduced to Ron Frasch as a stay-at-home dad : “He’s looking right over my head and I remember thinking, I’m gonna make this fucking blog so he looks at me when I’m talking to him.”

While being interviewed, Frasch and Schuman cross paths and Schuman, it seems, has gotten his wish:

“Hey, Ron.”

“Hey, Scott,” says Ron, politely but without slowing down.

“Happy New Year, buddy,” Schuman says.

And that, kids, is why you want to work at a magazine: to capture precious moments like these. [WWD]

This year, marking the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s 50th anniversary, the awards will be presented on June 4 at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tulley Hall in a ceremony hosted by Saturday Night Live also-ran Seth Meyers.

Garance Dore has headed to New York and is loving her new home. The fashion photographer and blogger says that she needed some time to adjust and take a breathe in amidst of all the craziness, but she can’t wait to “tell [us] soon what it’s like to be a Parisian in New York.” As she says, “It’s — really — another life.”

1. Trendy: In France, in addition to trendy, we have tendance, the most used word in fashion. I can’t take it anymore!

2. Fashionista: Ooh, so right! Get rid of it! Along with recessionista! And everything else that ends in -ista!

3. Designer ‘being used to describe branded clothing‘ (Like: This cape is so Phoebe Philo).

4. Vintage / Retro

5. Must have: Yeah, ok, because really, must-haves are supposed to be over. Just ask Miss Philo. I must have talked about her clogs and bags at least 2 million times this season. The must-have is here MORE THAN EVER, but we’re not allowed to say it out loud anymore. That’s called recessionypocrisy! (Voilà! I invented a word! I am a wordista!)

6. Celeb: Oh definitely yes, let’s get rid of that.

7. ‘in’: DEFINITELY YES, unless you’re humming the Gainsbourg song.

8. LBD (slang for Little Black Dress): You know what that means, huh? In French, we’d say PRN. But we’re too cool to reduce PRN to three initials. Plus, that makes it seem like a medical term or something, don’t you think?

9. Style Icon: Oh yeah. We’ve used the word icon so much we don’t even know what it means anymore. A pair of shoes can be called an icon these days. Everything is an icon.

10. Funky: Oh my god, Violaine, don’t tell me there are still people that use this word!!!

11. “It” thing (it-bag, it girl, it-shoes)

We can agree on most of these but really must add a few of our own…

1. Vogue Worthy: Cause the only shit “Vogue Worthy” these days are the designers who can afford advertising.

2. Fierce, Make It Work, Bananas, I Die or any other term or catchphrase drudged up from the Bravo cistern of “talent”.

3. “The Next…”: As in “The Next McQueen” or “The Next Kate Moss”, can’t you just be you without having to be compared to those before you? I’ve been called “The Next Perez” and “The Next Wintour” and neither one makes a shit-lick of sense.

4. Plus Size Model: Just model should do, why must we stress the fact that they’re fat?

5. Metrosexual: The term that seems to never die. Just read a New York Times article where they referenced the “Age of the Metrosexual”, considered driving a car bomb through their building.

6. Thrify: This word just doesn’t belong in fashion.

7. “Haute” Used Inappropriately: The Fashionista Girls pointed this one out, but I totally agree. I hate when people try to make this word sound like “Hot” and then use it to describe an event or a collection. The pronunciation is closer to “Oat” and unless your talking about something that can be considered breakfast, don’t use it. (Though Honey Bunches of Haute doesn’t sound like such a bad idea…)

Do you read fashion blogs?
Yes of course! I started at the beginning of 2010 because of all this interest in this online digital media, but I always followed Scott (Schuman), Garance and Tommy Tom since they started.

My favs are: The Sartorialist, Garance Doré, Jak and Jil, BryanBoy, Chic Muse, Shelby, All The Pretty Birds, Purple Diary, Self Service Blog, Style Rookie, The Love Magazine, Swide Magazine, and Scala Regia.

None. I like to see every show. I really enjoy the vibe when the shows start.

Shoes! I can survive without clothes, but I will die if i don’t get the right shoes. I collect them I have more than 4,000 pairs of shoes and if I can wear a Zara dress, I cannot wear cheap shoes.

Because I travel so much I like to shop properly in each different city. For example US designers in NYC (Marc Jacobs, Phi, Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang, Joseph Altuzarra, Rodarte,) French designers in Paris, and Italian designers in Milan.

To not get old! Fashion keeps me young and keeps my eyes fresh. I have to update myself every morning.  I’m so curious  about all the visionary phenomena that changes the contemporary scenario. I call myself  “the vestal of fashion” because for me fashion is a muse and you must seduce her.  How? You have to feed the creative fire, so it doesn’t vanish.

If you’ve been given a weekend to do anything, anywhere, what would you do?

I love to do intensive workshop of Astanga yoga completed by a long swim, meditation, and pranayama.

Carine Roitfeld. She has always fascinated me with her intriguing attitude and her incredible way of dressing.

I always say that the visibility is not enough to start in this profession, it’s  hard work.  You need to assist some editors with humbleness and devotion for a least 10 years. You must to do without speaking and with a watchful eyes only to learn.

A Saleswoman. I love buying clothes and I’d  like to be in a shop dressing up  other women.

Club Monaco may be a little late to the social media party, but they are quickly making friends and influencing people. For their latest campaign they enlisted the help of style bloggette, Garance Dore who shot some of her friends in the Club’s Fall Must haves. Here is their exclusive interview with the lens-crafter.

Club Monaco What drew you to Club Monaco?

Garance Dore I knew Club Monaco and really enjoy the minimalistic glamour of their collections. When I had my first meeting with them in New York, I simply fell in love with the energy of the whole team. And the clothes were so lovely, I couldn’t wait to start shooting!

CM You did the casting for this shoot. What story were you trying to tell?

GD The story of a real New York City girl, seen through the eyes of me, a Parisienne. To me, she is full of life, and of energy. She is smart. And very beautiful!

CM What inspires you about each cast member?

GD Luke: He has an irresistible smile and a great warm energy.
Alec: Gorgeous, shy and artistic.
Jeff: Has a very good personal style and a gorgeous motorbike… girls always like a motorbike !!
Lily: One of the most amazing girls I know. Beautiful, smart and funny.
Laurel: Have you seen her eyes? She knows about fashion and it works.
Maria: She is so sweet, so stylish, it’s not a surprise she works for Club Monaco.
Brydie: What a warm and contagious laugh… I met Byrdie for this shoot and really hope I will see her again soon.

CM How were you able to get the cast members to relax and have fun while it was freezing cold outside? You made it look effortless…

GD Thank you! I think it’s all about the casting. I am really careful with the people I choose to work with. Then I always like a good laugh, I tend to not overdramatize little problems. I think one of the greatest qualities of a photographer is to be able to make people around them feel good. That’s how you get good shots. So thank you so much, this is a real great compliment!

CM What piece from the Club Monaco collection do you want for your own closet?

GD There are a lot! But I love the bi-color trench coat Lily was wearing and a little silk scarf with a star print that is just beautiful.

CM What was your favorite look?

GD A very simple one Laurel was wearing, with the cropped navy pants. Modern and glamorous.

CM What piece would you buy for Scott?

GD The bright orange pants. Love them.

CM What do you think about the hat trend for women?

GD I love hats. They are always the perfect finishing touch to a look. I had to refrain myself from having every outfit shot with a hat. The Club Monaco ones were very inspiring.

CM How is shooting on the streets in NYC different than Paris?

GD There is something about the wide streets and the light, which is incredible there, it’s like it was made for pictures. Such a great vibe! I love New York.

CM You were stopped by many fans during the shoot. How does it make you feel that New Yorkers really admire your work?

GD I’m always so honored that people in NYC recognize me. It makes me very humble and so happy to know that through a simple website, I touch the hearts of people.

CM What makes a “beautiful” photo?

GD Emotion.

CM How did you work with the changing light during the day and the really cold weather?

GD Two words: great team! And a good parka. I am also very used to taking pictures on the street, adaptation is my second name. You should have seen me shooting under the snow this winter for New York fashion week… So I love to adapt to different light and weather conditions, it actually inspires me.

CM Chris shot a behind the scenes video. What excites you about video as a medium?

GD Video is linked to photos and illustrations to me. There is something you never see in a shoot, it’s the interaction between people. Video is the opportunity to show that.

CM As a photographer what is it that fascinates you about street fashion?

GD It’s a great way to discover personalities, it’s a different way to live fashion than through the magazine fashion stories, which are more an ideal (and which I love). It’s a great way to be inspired and to find your own style.

CM What is your favorite thing about blogging and connecting with your readers?

GD I just think I am not the one making my blog. It is my readers and those everyday, who leave me comments and encouragement. That’s where I get all my strength and enthusiasm. The interaction is my favorite thing. I would like to interact even more!

CM Define Chic.

GD Real chic is something you have even when you are naked. It’s a mix of intelligence, kindness, grace and pride. It’s a politeness to other people to look good…

CM How would you describe your own style?

GD My style is a translation of my lifestyle: I travel a lot so my wardrobe has to be simple and functional. I am a fashion lover so I always need a few fashion forward pieces. I’m also a photographer so I need comfort. But, I love to be sexy and I can’t live without my high heels…

Rodarte’s layered flowey pieces left me almost speechless, especially since the finale literally glowed in the dark under black light. Romantic, feminine, and almost bridal worthy, the clothes seem to take on a life of their own as they drift down a runway lit by candlelight and sprinkled in white confetti.

Front row included Tavi, Bryan Boy, Anna Wintour, Grace Coddington, Natalie Portman, Kristen Dunst, Jason Schwartzman, Scott Schuman and Garance Dore.

Plaid is hitting the streets in a global way as spotted in these shots by one of our favorite street style bloggers, Garance Dore. I think the best way for this to work is ala leggings as shown in the second photo. So subtle and chic, it kills.
