style="text-align: left;">MAC Cosmetics is taking a stilettoed walk on the dark side for its latest collaboration. The makeup giant has tapped Gareth Pugh to design his own collection just in time for the holiday season.

Pugh is no stranger to a full face; he started wearing makeup as an 8-year-old ballerina but gave up the dance to pursue fashion at 16. To this day, however, he refuses to leave the house without his face painted — “To me, it’s like putting my shoes on.”

Demonstrating characteristics of a nascent hoarder — “I never throw anything away” — Pugh dug through his studio for inspiration to send to MAC: “There’s a butterfly ring, which is how we came up with the iridescent thing. There was a hematite rock that I’d picked up in Evolution in New York. I can’t resist that place. It’s full of dead things and crystals. I sent Mac the feathered head-dresses from my spring/summer 2010 show – light grey feathers, that’s how we came up with that colour. It’s all come from the same place so it works as a collection, I think. It tells a story.”

The result is a beautifully dark, and darkly beautiful, collection that features a duo-chromatic nail polish, a matte powder designed for all skin complexions and Flight Lashes, a pair of false lashes that could easily take you up, up and away on a strong breeze.

The collaborative process seems to have been beneficial for both sides with MAC’S senior VP and creative director James Gager remarking: ”The main thing is that Gareth is this young, vital, progressive creative force. I feel that aligning ourselves with someone like that says a lot to both our [make-up] artists and our customers about the vitality of Mac as a brand.”

“I don’t do a lot of collaborations, especially not with big companies,” Pugh admitted, ” and I think only a few of those would be willing to commit to this level of investment: custom packaging, a film. It’s been done really beautifully and, like I say, Mac has done my shows for many years, make-up is important to my shows, I wear make-up and it’s kind of let me do what I want.”

To promote Gareth Pugh for MAC, a short film was shot starring model Alla Kostromichova that will be screened alongside the product once the collection launches online and in select MAC stores in December. Boo, I say. Boo! Call me cynical — and openly bored by everyone else — but Gareth Pugh’s spring 2012 offering was dynamic, breathtaking and futuristic without being hokey. And then there was the added layer of theatricality sorely missing from runway shows since Alexander McQueen‘s untimely passing last year. I think it’s safe to say it won’t get better than this.

As if an alien space pod had landed carrying a fierce race of insectoid women, the models stormed the runway against the backdrop of a gaping maw resembling their mothership. Shedding the cage-like chrysalises of the show’s first half, the alien women swathed themselves in voluminous black and donned Phillip Treacy‘s cocoon masks as their mothership became engulfed in purple flames. Aside from a great story, Pugh’s show provided some of his strongest looks to date — clean to the point of minimalism but still defiantly “out-of-the-box.” These aren’t red carpet-ready creations…unless it’s a red carpet on Venus.

Also, bonus points for featuring a man-heel with some actual height as opposed to a run-of-the-mill Cuban heel.

Photos: Models.com

Guinness the Great: Daphne on Display at FIT

CULTURE

FASHION

alexander mcqueen

Chanel

daphne guinness

fashion institute of technology

FIT

FIT museum

gareth pugh

rick owens
<guid

More recently, I’ve gotten into Halloween just for another excuse to wear a heel. And then of course, there is Fashion Week. It’s a battlefield out there; survival of the chicest. The ante has been further upped by the explosion of photoseekers running around, snapping pics of the best-dressed stomping in and out of shows. So how do you catwalk in front of the lens and into the hearts of the new social anthropologist — the streetstyle blogger? Here are 5 looks to get you noticed.

You won’t find traditional workout equipment at Amplitude; there is nary a weight nor a bench on the 2nd floor of 261 East 78th St. What you will find are several Vibraflex vibration platforms…which, by the by are just as fun as they sound.

Have you ever seen those old-school machines with the belt that jiggles the fat off of you, or something to that end? Well, these vibration platforms are like that but a whole lot more effective and less likely to give you a seizure.

By creating thousands of muscle contractions in a matter of minutes, vibration training uses 90% of the muscle as opposed to traditional resistance training’s 40-50%. So with just 10-15 minutes, 3-times a week, you can see results in as little as 2 weeks.

I broke more of a sweat running (late per usual) to Amplitude last week than performing the actual exercises while there. Co-owner David Newman walked me through the basics and though it was only a few minutes — six at tops — it was a considerable workout.

Plus, among the many benefits of vibration training is improved bone density, which is great for me since I acquire most of my daily nutrition from Jack Daniels and Jose Cuervo thus ensuring my bones have the density of aged balsa wood.

Anyhoo, after the Vibraflex training, the real fun began.

I’ve always been fond of defying gravity, both as a showtune sung by the incomparable Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth (though I’ll take Lea Michele in a pinch) and also just a concept — I mean, who doesn’t want to know what it feels like to fly? Enter the Anti-Gravity Treadmill.

<img

Amplitudes No Sweat Workout" width="560" height="746" />

Though not necessarily flying, the Anti-Gravity Treadmill allows you to run as an astronaut would, reducing your weight by as much as 80%. And the best part is you don’t even need a space suit. Even better, you get to wear these cool Gareth Pugh-esque pants that zips you into the treadmill.

<a

Amplitudes No Sweat Workout" width="560" height="746" />

In ten minutes I burned what it would’ve taken me 15-20 minutes on the elliptical with the same if not less impact on my joints. All in all, exercising at Amplitude was fun, easy and effective, and what’s even better it’s an interesting experience. There’s nothing like running at 65% of your body weight in a pair of rubber pants while knowing you’re actually getting a real workout.

To try the vibratory wave of the future, you can go online or call 646.692.9317 to schedule an appointment at Amplitude Vibration Studio.

But oh, what’s this?

<a

All you gotta do is Tweet and Facebook Share this post and you can win! Just imagine anti-gravity running and vibrating your way to a healthier you. Leigh Bowery always operated outside of the mainstream and that is exactly what fashion needs to keep it interesting and fun: an alternate, subversive point of view.

Without that, and without Leigh Bowery, we might as well all just shop at Wal-Mart and get styled at Supercuts.

LINK LOVE: Tomorrow marks the start of the holiday shopping frenzy, while I’m hear to hopefully make your job a bit easier. When is comes to buying gifts for guys my biggest advice would be to keep it simple. Buying clothes is not easy, so I like to stick to small accessories and unique pieces that show thought went into them, but can’t really be messed up.

1. Ties: I know it seems cliche to buy a guy a tie for Christmas (or whatever holiday you celebrate), but every guy needs them, and if it’s a good one it makes a great impression. Take for example this great Band Of Outsiders tie, it’s certainly not cheap, and it is unique enough that it looks like you put thought into the purchase (available at Opening Ceremony; $140).

2. Fragrance: Most guys own and where more than one scent It keeps girls on their toes, and they are often worn for different seasons, occasions, etc. A well thought out fragrance is always a good purchase. Don’t pick a particularly strong scent though, even some of the manliest of men don’t like an overpowering fragrance. I’ve become a huge fan of the Jeremy Scott for Six Scents fragrance (available at Oak NYC; $85.00).

3. Scarf: Every is wearing them, and they are a very useful item if you’re in a cold area. Be careful though, because buying the wrong scarf can end up the same way as buying an ugly shirt for someone. Keep is simple. Buy a versitile color or pattern, and ake sure it goes well with more than just their usual coat. I’ve been a huge fan of the American Apparel circle scarf I just picked up, it makes it really easy to bunch up around your neck and it doesn’t unravel and fall off (available at American Apparel; $28).

4. Work Bag: Think what you want, but just like women and their purses, a man can’t have too many work bags. I use mine all day everyday, to the point where the strap just breaks off. Show you put some thought into it though. Buy a higher end bag that has a little personality like this Billykirk x Opening Ceremony bag, rather than some shitty canvas one from The Gap (available at Opening Ceremony; $365)

5. A Weekender: Not to be confused with the previous work bag, a weekender is for someone who’s on the move a lot. A weekend here and weekend there, never more than about 3 days, but they have enough stuff that some packing is involved. A weekender is a must! Make sure you have a good one too, these will last just about a life time. I love this bag by Property Of just because of it’s size. You can really fit a good amount of stuff into a bag like this, and still be able to carry it around easily (available at Blackbird; $345).

6. Sunglasses: I wear mine all year around. Like many of the other pieces I’ve show you so far you want to get a pair that are practical yet have a little fun in them. I wouldn’t recommend getting to crazy either, stick to buying black or tortoise they go with everything. I’m a huge fan of everything Super has been doing, I actually have a pair on my Christmas list (available at Super.com; $244)

7. Cool Gadget Accessories: Gifting really unique accessories for (in this case) the person’s iPhone can be a great gift. Be warned though, make sure that you are 100% positive it is cool before you buy it, you don’t want to turn into that weird aunt who buys you stupid accessory things. I love this AnOther x Colette x Gareth Pugh iPhone case. Not too many people will have it, and it scores major scene points (available at Opening Ceremony; $95).

8. Rings: I knwo what you’re thinking, rings? But yeah rings! I’ve found most men wear atleast one ring at all times (even if it’s not their wedding band), so being able to find a really cool masculine ring makes for a great gift. Iona and Digby do an amazing job using old hunting and fishing motifs for their jewelry which make them perfect for gifting (available at DigbyandIona.com; $180)

9. Jewelry: Keeping in line with the previous pick, gifting jewelry (even to guys) is always a solid choice. Pick something simple and cool, none of this stupid “Jesus Piece” crap from a street vendor in Chinatown. I love the “Tar” collection from Alex and Chloe. The items are simple, and the black tar look gives them that additional edge (available at AlexandChloe.com; $64)
<p

Books: A good book is never a bad gift. I recommend giving the “What A Man Should Know” Volume 1 book to any guy out there. Not only is it funny, but it’s pretty true too (available at J-Crew; $20)

LOOKBOOK: the twentyten collection two

GIRLS

Mens

elizabeth ammerman

gareth pugh

seven new york

the twentyten

Brooklyn natives, the twentyten, have rolled out a second round of images for their amazing new collection! The pieces are by no means for the people who wish to go unnoticed, but what’s the fun in that? This is what I have come to view as fashion (for all you people out there who say I don’t know what I’m talking about), the type of clothes that evokes a certain feeling of art within it, unlike a lot of the over praised designs found at Saks or Barneys. Love the whole collection, and I think I could live in the huge draping tank featured with the gray overcoat.

PS, do any of you see a familiar face from the scene in any of these photos? The always elegant Elizabeth Ammerman of Seven is one of the models for this shoot! I know 90% of you still have no clue what I’m talking about so I’ll make it even easier for all of you. The girl you see almost everyday in Soho with the Gareth Pugh shoes. There done! If you don’t know now just Google her.

<embed
