- The Vatican continues sweet-talking the gays with Pope Benedict claiming gay marriage basically signals the downfall of humanity. Joke’s on him, that happened after season one of the Jersey Shore. [Towleroad]

- It may be time for Barbie to start picking better friends. Doll versions of Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian – called Dash dolls after their miniature Kardashian-inspired clothing — will befriend Mattel’s golden girl this year. In addition to wearing the trashy leopard print jumpsuits synonymous with the family’s Dash Boutiques, the dolls will “reflect the girls’ measurements.” Meaning the Khloe doll will be played by Ken. Cover girl Lucas plays the fair-haired, fair-skinned outsider, finding sophistication in the wilderness with looks from Bottega Veneta, Marni, Tommy Hilfiger, Miu Miu, Chanel and Louis Vuitton. Meanwhile Fogarty is immersed in tribal prints and the occasional headwrap from the runways of Burberry, Balenciaga, Pucci, Diane von Furstenberg, Giorgio Armani and Maison Martin Margiela.

Born in Stockholm, Sweden of Dutch and Indonesian descent on August 4, 1968. Schenkenberg was discovered by photog Barry King while rollerskating in Venice Beach in 1989 after which he appeared in ads for Calvin Klein, shot with the legendary Richard Avedon and strutted on catwalks for Versace, Donna Karan and Giorgio Armani. Schenkenberg has managed to survive over 20 years in the modeling game — as well as a stint on Vh1‘s precursor to Celebrity Rehab, The Surreal Life and a much-publicized affair with Pamela Anderson — rightly earning him the title as the World’s First Male Supermodel.

Then he kicked Miuccia Prada in the ladyparts by blasting her house’s recent IPO (initial public offering) stating that he didn’t need to go public since his company is a strong black woman –  independent and debt-free — while his clothes make men more handsome and elegant.

Enter noted old-man-beater and Tod’s chairman, Diego Della Valle. Valle, referring to Armani as a “sprightly old man,” said the designer’s attack didn’t “make any sense” and instead of playa-hatin’ he should just get in the game and go public himself:

“Rather than criticizing Prada’s strategies, Armani should do the same thing, invest in the territory, as I did in Rome, contributing to the restoration of the Colosseum. In a moment of crisis, it’s important to be part of a team, and it’s our duty to give a signal, not waste time in useless attacks.”

Round 3: Armani takes it to the streets. Armani wrote a letter to Corriere della Sera, Italy’s top newspaper, explaining that he would never compromise his creativity and his freedom by going public:

“I don’t need alliances, complicity, or need to surround myself with international jetsetters. I have too much respect for myself, for the public, and for the people that work both with me and the fashion industry to renounce any sort of intellectual honesty that influences and orients my life, even at the expense of attractive economic opportunities….I don’t need any of the money from the stock exchange — not for growth, not for globalization, not to aggregate my brand.”

The gauntlet has been thrown, or rather, limply tossed out since Giorgio Armani is literally 1000 years old. On the one hand, it’s understandable where he’s coming from. Once you have someone else to answer to besides yourself, there’s a definite loss of freedom. But on the other hand, Armani’s reaction seems more like a defense against the idea of change.

He’s been doing this fashion shtick for 900 years (he got started later in life); he’s used to dressing men a certain way, used to running his business a certain way but fashion never gets used to anything. Prada, which initially resisted an IPO, went public as a strategic business move that will allow for further expansion of the brand worldwide. Whether this will dilute or drastically alter the aesthetic vision, however, is something we’ll just have to wait to see. [WWD]

Photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, the ads could easily have been ripped out of a 70s fashion mag, which is precisely the aesthetic Ford was going for with his collection. Informed and heavily inspired by the 70s and Studio 54, Stone looks like a latter day Jerry Hall so temptingly close to Ford’s bearded bravado.

Ford explained his propensity for placing himself in his ads to WWD:

“I’m not in the ads because I’m vain. A lot of people still don’t know who I am, and the product sells better with me in the ads. The old designers — Yves [Saint Laurent], Giorgio [Armani] and Ralph [Lauren] — occasionally used to do it.”

Yves, however, probably wouldn’t approve.

Look Three: Barefoot Summer Walk

The Stripe Dyed Skirt: Maggie Ward, $300

This maxi looks straight out of the desert. The flowing chiffon will hit the floor when worn at the waist, but I pulled it up to just below the bust to extend the possibilities of layering. It’s even more comfortable than it looks (if you can imagine), which is designer John Ward’s goal with the brand.

The Nude Lace Top: Pas de Calais, $258

Pas de Calais is a region in the north of France known for its exquisite lace. That is why this Japanese company chose to name the company as such. I chose the top for its delicate nature and the ability to see through it to the under layers – an important factor this season.

The Mesh Metal Bra: Diana Broussard $594

With the metal detailing of the bra and the height of the skirt just showing a sliver of skin at the ribs, this is a classy way to see through a shirt. Having worked under the tutelage of John Galliano at Dior (in the 90’s, pre-drama) and at Gucci designing shoes, Diana Broussard now creates ultra stunning shoes, and a collection that encompasses lingerie like this.

The Sweater as Belt: Pas de Calais, $258

A men’s sweater tied ‘round the waist whispers nonchalance while defining the waist. Luckily, it will keep you warm as the night rolls in chilly later on. The quality of the wool is superfine, as is the tradition of Pas de Calais.

The Skirt as Shawl: Pas de Calais, $298

Whether they know it or not, and they probably do, Pas de Calais has crafted a seriously versatile piece out of this. It hangs as wrap around skirt, meant to sling low. I however threw it over my shoulders as a shawl. I like things that do things.

The Gold Scale Bracelet: Diana Broussard, $590

Like a dragon’s skin of solid gold, this engulfs my forearm in luxury. Broussard has a personal legacy of haute couture houses, of course it’s divine.

The Longest Necklace in the World: Laura B Collection Particuliére $500

Woven gold and silver and other various metals block together to form a necklace, that has the capacity to twist and drape on your body to your desired length. Spanning from neck to shin, I have found my favorite way to wear it. Little fact about Laura Bortolami she was studying law and economy before she met Armani’s primary assistant, which set her on a path to fashion.

The Painted Shorts: A. Turen, $168

The look began with the jean shorts, hand painted by Ashley Turen. Tattered to exposed-pocket summertime delight, these completely original mid-waisted metallic daisy dukes spoke to me.

The Nude Leather Tank: Maggie Ward, $282

I chose this top for its stability and flounce; the cropped A-line is perfect with a short and tight high waist. Plus, the leather is like cream. Maggie Ward was founded by Three Dots co-founder John Ward with the vision to make comfortable clothing that doesn’t appear comfortable. Tricky, tricky, and totally working.

The Softest Cropped Cardi: KristenseN du Nord, $239

This piece immediately warranted a home in the Boutique Critique. The combination of fabrics so delicate on a shape that embraces the moment makes for a must-have. Since the brand’s inception in 1996, they have worked exclusively with carefully selected Italian craftsmen and the finest materials. They use a method they call “wash-wash” to ensure zero shrinkage.

The Turban-Tied Scarf: Juma, $176

Amidst the wall of brilliantly patterned scarves, this one jumped out in its regality. With the image of a peacock surrounded by its painterly feathers, it just begged to be wrapped around my head until it became a fabric beehive. Brother and sister duo Alia and Jamil Juma forged these scarves and the rest of their collections from the influence of travel and art.

The Memories Necklace: Venessa Arizaga, $325

Off this chain hangs little bits of reminders of the trinkets you’ve encountered throughout your life and childhood. Each piece of jewelry is different; these pieces are gathered by Vanessa Arizaga through her copious travels. Before she took the dive into her own jewelry business, she was deep in the design world working under Tuleh, Carolina Herrera and Zac Posen. This is jewelry with a sense of humor and a background of elegance.

The Sneaks: Ash, $130

Properly faded and bleached, this pair makes one chill summer sneaker. The design pair Leonello Calvani and Patrick Ithier share a history in French luxury and create fine shoes that hit abreast of the trend – they strive to cater to those who seek out fashion in the most thrilling cities in the world.

The Chain Mail Pouch: Laura B Collection Particulière, $760

Made of metal mesh that moves like water, this pouch slouches so elegantly at the side. It has an alternative handle to carry on the wrist as well. Versatile and a little bit see through, I’m rather in love. This bag came to Laura Bortolami in a dream, whilst sleeping in Morocco; a glimmer on mesh. And so she did. Before she did any of this, she worked in her native city of Rome for Armani, Gianni Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and more until she dedicated herself fully to her jewelry venture in 1999.

Monsignor Domenico Mogavero said of the heavenly collaboration: “It’s not about trying to be fashionable. It was an initiative aimed at involving a fashion designer who loves Pantelleria and to capitalise on his originality in the service of faith and ultimately of God.”

And She wants us all to show up at those pearly gates — though for most of us, it’s probably the opposite direction — properly attired. If there is a heaven, there better be a dress code. [Daily Telegraph]

Step 1: Dilute your brand far past the point of recognition and/or respectability, i.e. Pierre Cardin toilets, strollers and heating units.

Step 2: Stage a “rambling” runway show during Paris Fashion Week that no top editors or buyers bother to show up for.

Step 3: Pull a wildly exorbitant asking price tag seemingly out of nowhere then justify it thusly:

“Asked how he came up with the billion-euro valuation, he takes out an old greeting card and, scribbling, says, ‘If I ask €10 million per product, which is nothing at all, per country, multiplied by 1,000, that makes one, two, three….’ Dismissing the profusion of zeroes, he concludes, ‘One thousand products, 100 countries, that’s how it calculates. It’s nothing.’”

Easy, peasy, right? Using a similar method, I valued my company, Werqing Gurl Ltd., at $450 million because that’s asking roughly $100 million for every second it’s been in existence. [WSJ]

While Haute Couture is highly celebrated on the red carpet, many fashion insiders seem confused over the true concept of the term.

In order to best understand, I like to refer to the designer pyramid, where haute couture is positioned above all else. While haute couture designs that are featured on the runway, may sometimes resemble artwork more than wearable fashions, they are in fact the inspiration for almost every piece of clothing you will ever purchase. When these collections are created, they set the standards for what will filter down to designers such as Prada, Dolce & Gabanna, Marc Jacobs and Diane Von Furstenberg, who then create prêt-a-porter (ready-to-wear) collections. Many designers have couture departments; an example would be Atelier Versace. An extension of Versace, the atelier (tailoring workshop) creates many of the long evening gowns and one-of-a-kind designs that are made to order to fit an individual’s body like a second skin. One step down from designers who have runway collections, are retailers such as Zara, Mango, Karen Millen, Reiss and Bebe. These stores have a higher turnover of clothing production and their designs are often copied from the ready–to-wear runway shows. Eventually, all of this is filtered down to companies such as Primark, Kmart and Wal-Mart, who mass-produce clothing that consumers can purchase for the fraction of the cost of the original design.

The origin of couture dates back to mid-nineteenth century Paris, when Empress Eugénie elicited the dressmaking services of Charles Frederick Worth, an English designer who was known for his luxurious choice of fabrics, sumptuous trimmings and attention to detail. Her refined tastes set the style of the court and won Worth the title of Europe’s very first Couturier. Before long, Worth was patronized by many titled, rich and notable women. Being a savvy businessman, he took advantage of the growing demand for his work by opening a showroom, La Maison de Couture in Paris. Interested buyers would come to view his latest pieces on live models and order their garment of choice. Worth would then recreate the chosen garment in his atelier, modifying it to the client’s taste and precise measurements. This business model provided the foundation for modern day couture.

Worth has not only been credited for being the inventor of couture, but also for inventing the modern day press kit. Before the photographic era, he was the first to promote his work by sending out miniature dolls wearing his designs, which journalists then reproduced as illustrations, thus creating the original fashion editorials.

Haute couture, when translated, simply means high dressmaking, but is the most celebrated fashion honor. In France, the term is protected by law and defined by the Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie de Paris. There are currently only eleven official members and three correspondent (foreign) members of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, all of whom have been invited for membership and must follow certain rules in order to use the term in their advertising.  Within this set of rules, each house is expected to operate a Paris-based atelier and show two full (thirty five pieces) collections, twice a year. These shows, which make up Paris Couture Week, are held during January and July and are not to be confused with the regular ‘fashion week’ which showcase the ready-to-wear collections.

Armani Privé, Valentino and Chanel are among the names currently boasting the most prestigious empires. Many see the stunning dresses featured on the red carpet, but are unsure as to how one would go about purchasing one. I recall seeing what would be my first haute couture gown, worn by Katie Holmes at her wedding reception. Even on the dimensionless page of a magazine, the dress spoke to me, implanting what would become a deep passion and lasting appetite for couture. It was only in my quest to purchase a gown of my own, did I learn that the ceremonious process by which one procures a couture dress proves as intricate, as the design itself.

Most designer stores, such as Giorgio Armani, are not closely connected to their couture house, and therefore it is mandatory for a new client to have a formal introduction to the atelier.  This will usually require a new client to fly to Rome, Paris or Milan simply to view the look book. If one is interested in a particular gown, then that dress must also be flown in from wherever it is in the world, at that particular time.

Originally made for runway models, each sample garment is a prototype made specifically for runway models. This means they are made for women who are at least 5’10” tall, extremely slim, with almost no bust and a long back. The sample garments are later fashioned with elastic rigging, so to accommodate clients with more curves than zero.

It is at the atelier, where one discusses any modifications, to ensure that a dress will suit the client perfectly. The couturiers have great wisdom regarding which colors, necklines, hemlines and silhouettes enhance each individual body size and shape. And, when you’re buying a dress that costs in the region of $160,000, it doesn’t hurt to seek professional consultation. Ordering couture is about teamwork and creativity, a process in which the customer is a vital part.

Haute Couture garments often require three or four fittings. While it is helpful if the client remains the same size, the very nature of a fitting is to continually adjust the garment to fit one’s body like a second skin, so it is expected that women may lose or gain a little weight, particularly if they are leading up to an important event. By the end of the fittings, no matter how revealing a dress may appear to be, you will feel completely comfortable and secure wearing it.

Usually more so than any other dress you have ever worn.

With an estimated 2,000 people worldwide who still purchase haute couture, but as few as 150 individuals who are regarded as regular clientele, designers go to great lengths to build a sense of loyalty amongst their clients. Giorgio Armani, for example, hosted intimate dinners during which clients are brought together to share their passion for, knowledge of, and experiences with couture. The attendees are not the spoiled individuals some might expect. We share our thoughts on the latest collections and what we believe inspired them. We discuss plans to attend upcoming shows and most importantly, we rely upon each other to compare experiences of buying from one designer over another.

The collection launch party was held inside the Armani flagship store on 5th Ave. We had a great time drinking champagne and trying on different pairs to see how they can really enhance facial features.

The collection is currently available at select optical shops.

Giorgio Armani has taken on Megan Fox as the new face of cosmetics. The 24-year-old actress, who already models for Armani Jeans and Emporio Armani Underwear, was picked for cosmetics because she “embodies the spirit of the women of today: free, confident and seductive.”

Polls Are Closed: Little Monsters could not care less about all those iconic references

I found myself having a lunch meeting in Rockefeller Plaza today- about 18 hours before Lady Gaga is to have her outdoor concert on the TODAY Show tomorrow morning. There was a line of intensely devoted fans– from teens to families– that already went down the street. Mind you that it’s boiling hot outside and camping out on a Midtown Manhattan street overnight and then some is not the most glamorous experience, even if you are under a makeshift tent.

For me, Lady Gaga’s costumes are often a bit déjà vu. I love when she teams up with Giorgio Armani or other design masters for something fresh and fantastical, but more often than not her costumes– on and off stage– are a mélange of the kooky glam years on either side of 1980.

I wonder if her infatuated fans get the iconic references or even care. The answer is NO, at least from my very random survey to the Little Monsters waiting in the heat.

The sultry hot blue-eyed brunette wore a siren red Giorgio Armani Privé dress to the premiere of her latest film, Jonah Hex.

Taking a trip to New York City’s East Village, photographer Jeffery Jones captures a dynamic Hartje Andresen in some of the season’s most desirable looks for the summer edition of QVEST. Aided by fashion editor Katharine Erwin, Jones creates a story full of passion and edge that takes on garments from labels such as Sonia Rykiel, Lanvin and Giorgio Armani. Here’s your first look at Armani’s latest collection of Cruisewear.  Giorgio Armani played with shapes and patterns for this collection, combining bold geometric tops, feminine florals and mixed modern with classic pin-stripe which gave this collection a chic, urban edge. Last night, Giorgio Armani hosted an exclusive cocktail party on board his boat Maìn to honor the extraordinary work of the cast and crew of the upcoming Doug Liman-directed political thriller “FAIR GAME.” For the film, Giorgio Armani provided select wardrobe for Naomi Watts’ portrayal of the lead character, Valerie Plame Wilson.
