When financier Annu Gyani lost her job during the recession, she didn’t see it as a setback. Though a graduate of NYU’s Stern School of Business, Gyani’s passion was always deep-rooted in fashion, and one closed door was her open window to an industry she’d always admired and wanted to be a part of.  On an extended trip to India, researching fabrics, textiles and artists, her idea for ShawLux was born. Not only does Gyani work with beautiful textiles and embellishments for her accessory line, but she recently began to digitally print well-known landmarks and pieces of nature onto her scarves that are catching the eyes of consumers and press globally. We love Amber Sakai for her cleverly designed garments, perfecting the balance of sultry details and minimalistic elegance. We caught up with Amber to chat about her personal style, design inspiration and love for New Yorkers.

You mix sultry details with everyday basics for looks that are both sexy and functional? Did you take this aesthetic from your own personal style?

I have a wanderlust mindset and believe there needs to be function in fashion. And like any woman, it’s the details that become one’s own expression to set us apart. What I carry over from my personal style is my love for a perfect drape and the mystery one can create using lace to suggest what lies beneath.

You are inspired by Reginald Marsh’s paintings, who depicted a lot of New York City scenes throughout the 1920s and 30s. What about this time period, and the women who lived it, speaks to you?
I love the way Reginald Marsh captures and celebrates the strength, beauty and imperfections of women in the most feminine way. What I like about this time period is the way women dressed to be seen and admired.

You drape many of your pieces to achieve romantic, body-conscious design. What do you want women to feel when when they wear this silhouette? Who is the Amber Sakai woman?
Confidence! The Amber Sakai woman is someone who walks to her own beat. She is both sophisticated and flirtatious and not afraid to live out her every single desire.

Every piece in your collection can seamlessly take the wearer from a flea market to a gritty after-hours club. This seductive woman is so overtly New York. What about this great city and the women who inhabit it inspire your design?
My design aesthetic suits a women who is constantly on the go, as most New York women are! I love how New Yorkers fully embrace day to evening ensembles, and I find many of my silhouettes will allow her the freedom to be fashionably ready from walking out the door in the morning to any impromptu after-hours events the city has to offer.

FashionIndie: What was the moment when you decided to make the leap from working for other designers [Botkier, Olivia Harris by Joy Gryson...] to going indie? 

Alex Toy: A. Toy started out with a desire to create something unique, special and, selfishly, for myself. I was always on the lookout for a cool everyday bag for myself. I hate it when you’re out and 3 other people are wearing that same thing. For A. Toy it’s not about having this huge global brand, it’s about designing a coveted product that people appreciate.

FI: Your philosophy on no-pretension bags is spot on. What is your biggest pet peeve about certain other bags in the world?

A. Toy: My biggest pet peeve about other bags is loading them up with too many [non-functioning] details. Bags are meant to be functional and, to me, that is the most important feature.

On the interior of all my bags there is a removable pouch that snaps in place. This pouch also snaps into other A. Toy bags which is perfect for cell phone chargers or any other necessary things when switching from one bag to another. Also I designed my dust bag so that it can also be used as a large tote bag. It’s all in the details!

FI: The unisex aspect is also on point – what are some elements you included/omitted to make it work for both guys and ladies?

A. Toy: In terms of design, I always focus more on the masculine side first. Men will rarely carry a feminine bag but a woman carrying amasculine bag is super sexy.

FI: Who have you been most excited to see wear A. Toy?

A. Toy: Everyday people in the city – those are the people I design for. It’s the best feeling to see people rocking A. Toy. It makes me feel like I am doing something right.

FI: What thoughts and sights are sparking the ideas for your next collection of bags?

A. Toy: As the collection evolves I am making the product even more special and unique. Un-expected combinations of trim leathers that make the bags stand out in a good way. You will see!

FI: Where did YOTA come from and why is he so freaking cute??

A. Toy: YOTA came out of the need to create something fun and special. I love Kidrobot toys and the surprise of not knowing which toy you would get was the best part. Not all A. Toy bags come with a YOTA so when you do get one it just makes it that much more special.

What makes for an even, non-streaky self-tan?
Self tans go streaky and patchy because people are scared to use them and try to spread a very little amount of product over a large surface area of skin. When it stretches, it streaks. Make sure the skin is covered with product and you can see it properly.

St. Tropez is built so it doesn’t streak. What makes it different from other self tanners out there?
It has a high level of tanning agent so the skin won’t need to absorb all of it. If there is not enough, that it when the tan looks patchy. As long as your skin is completely covered with the product, you can’t go wrong.

What’s the best way to make your self tan last as long as possible
Be gentle on your skin – pat it dry and don’t use harsh products. Sweat will make it fade faster as well.

Summer is coming and that only means one thing, my hair is going to go crazy! Actually my hair pretty much always has a mind of its own. In the colder months, my hair is flat and crinkly looking, (not a good combo), and in the more humid months, it’s super poof, but not always defined. 1) From acting to singing to modeling, you’ve had quite the repertoire of careers. What made you choose introducing a line of hand-bags?

I guess I’ve always been really fascinated with being able to create anything, that’s why creating a handbag would naturally be something that I’d be into. I’m a huge fan of accessories, bags and art books. I’m really driven by beautiful artwork, bright colors and textures, I’ll collect things wherever I see them I’ll bring them home and share these beautiful things with my friends.

The biggest reason I started designing handbags was because of my buddies Brian and Annie whom are trend icons in HK and work in fashion. They asked me if I would be interested in starting this project together. Otherwise, I would never have the guts to start such a brand on my own.

2) Out of the many projects you’ve been involved in, we, being fashion people, would certainly hope that designing lands among your favorites. What was your experience like designing hand bags?

It was my first time. I’ve had lots of help from my husband, he helped me to draw the bag on the paper. All I did was to come up with an idea of having an M16 on a duffle bag. Then my partner helped me to put in all the details. I’ve also came up with having the black and yellow print for my M16. It was easy to figure out a concept but it’s definitely a headache to put it to practicality. Thanks to Annie, my partner. She’s smart and creative at the same time.

3) Please describe the name and theme behind your Mata Hari bag line.

Mata hari was the stage name of world war l’s famous female espionage spy. The brand captures the same underlying themes of glamour, sophistication, and a certain chic sexiness as the heroine it’s named after. It’s the essential link to making your mark for your personal style with these statement pieces and one-off show-stoppers. Every season we pick our muses: The first season we chose Asia’s top iconic fashion figures who were models, actors, singers, etc and for our next coming season we have the industries top stylists creating their own handbags for our collection. It’s a fun project that always involves creative women who are leaders in their respective industries.

4) Who is your ideal customer for the Mata Hari bags? Give us her background story.

mata hari was created in answer to every girls desire for a handbag with distinctive characteristics and features that reflects a unique individual style.

Hilary is an actress, style icon and up and coming fashion designer. Hilary Tsui is famous for her fashion forward edge. With loads of Ooh factor, she brings us a must have fun and playful one of a kind showstopper. A star shaped purse in luscious metallic red, punchy cobalt blue sheep, and sophisticated black patent all of which comes with a metal chain strap with a rock n roll edge.

The Ayumi bag was designed by Ayumi Ito, a critically praised actress with a distinctive style. This bag is drama worthy with different shapes and sizes of oversized stones embellishing the front of the bag. A classic shape with a distinctive style.
