- Cosmopolitan is oversexed, Glamour’s definitely hiding something, and Vogue is surprisingly romantic. The buzzwords magazines used most on their covers for 2011 painted a telling portrait. [Fashionista]

It’s been a tough year for women’s fashion magazines across the board, except for Vogue, which has managed to increase its ad pages by 9% and its newsstand sales by 13%, thus earning it the title of Ad Age‘s Magazine of the Year. Conversely, Glamour‘s ad pages and newsstand sales are down – by 7% and 17%, respectively. As Condé Nast‘s biggest seller, it’s imperative that Glamour turn a strong profit for their publishing parent; and so to ensure that, Leive is planning a redesign and overhaul of the mag.

The new Glamour will launch in March with new columns and contributors and an increased focus on pop culture. Michael Angelo, Nylon‘s former art director has also been brought on to assist with the redesign. “The format of many women’s magazines — Glamour included! — hasn’t changed much for a decade,” Leive told WWD, ”but young women are consuming media in totally different ways now. Our team is creating a new Glamour and glamour.com for this new generation of readers….”

Hopefully someone informed Ms. Leive that this  new generation of readers doesn’t actually read. [WWD]

- Vogue lopped off a few of Lila Grace Moss (Kate Moss‘ daughter)’s fingers in their September issue in a case of bad and badly observed Photoshop. I guess Anna is human after all. What a day of disappointments. [Styleite]

- In other Brit Kate news, Kate Winslet has joined forces with fellow Oscar winners, Emma Thompson and Rachel Weisz to form the “British Anti-Cosmetic Surgery League,” an informal group of acting superheroines fighting against Hollywood’s pressure to go under the knife. In other news, Demi Moore has formed the “Legion of the Evil and Ageless.”  [Telegraph]

I’ll be honest this is the best we’ve seen Rihanna since she’s decided to go for the Kool-Aid red look. Hopefully this is a precursor to her Vogue and Esquire covers also coming out soon.

Ogilvy & Mather and Cool Hunting created 30 short videos, each 20 to 90 seconds long, profiling members of the Gap 1969 denim studio in Los Angeles, as well as going behind the scenes of the design and manufacturing process.

“Increasingly, people want to know the stories behind the products — who’s designing it, where it comes from,” said Seth Farbman, Gap’s global chief marketing officer. “We recognize that we have to be more open. We had not done enough storytelling about what was new and different at the Gap.”

The videos debut this week at Cool Hunting and Refinery29 followed by sponsored content next week on DailyCandy, FabSugar, Hulu, Pandora and Gap’s Facebook page among other sites.

The print ads will star “real-ish” [read: a half-inch short of model] people in Gap 1969 pants and will run in the September issues of seemingly every mag including Vogue, Elle, Glamour, Nylon, Details, GQ, Rolling Stone, Marie Claire and ESPN. [WWD]

In addition to the dietitians, trainers, stylists, hair and makeup teams and radical pressure to uphold the skewed and artificial American standard of beauty, behind every celebrity is a talented and seasoned retoucher. With the help of Photoshop, faces are contoured, cleavage is shadowed, fat is sucked away and muscles are defined with the strategic use of a few very powerful digital tools. Read more…

Exasperated by these repeated questions and the strange, modern-day beauty ideals in our country, five FashionIndie editors went under the Photoshop knife. That’s to say, we were pinned, tucked, pulled, chopped and airbrushed by the very talented photographer Christopher Hall to show you that, with the right team, anyone can be on the cover of an American magazine.

We decided to duplicate the poses of contestants on an America’s Next Top Model poster. The BEFORE images have the original backgrounds, the AFTER photos were pasted onto plain white. Glamour is Condé Nast‘s top newsstand seller, averaging 550,900 copies per month last year, though this year that number is down to 459,000. Editor-in-Chief Cindi Leive, however, is keeping a cool head for these numbers, claiming that it’s “no secret” sales have been falling off:

“It’s the classic thing. A girl has 1.7 seconds at the newsstand to make her decision about your magazine. Are we using that 1.7 seconds as well as we should? If we need to do that more ferociously and with different people and different topics, then we will.”

Glamour‘s array of different people this year have included Reese Witherspoon, Kim Kardashian, Diane Kruger, Kate Winslet, Emma Stone and Olivia Wilde with Blake Lively covering July’s issue. Leive hopes Lively will turn things around, especially in light of recent alleged events:

“My top seller this year is Kim Kardashian. Although I have hopes that Blake Lively’s nude picture scandal will put her over the edge. Just kidding, Blake.”

Totes kids…but honestly, Blake, if you could leak some other “fake” nudes, Glamour would seriously appreciate it. [WWD]

On being heavy when she was younger…

Hudson Jeans, a denim company with celebrity fans including Sandra Bullock, Pink and Gisele Bündchen, has a new concept hitting stores this month: one-of-a-kind, hand-cut and hand-sewn jeans, available at your usual fine retailers for the steep price of $995.. They may not be bespoke, but the result is the same; you can find a pair that’s uniquely “you,” whether that means sideways back pockets and zippers everywhere or whitewashed denim with artfully placed seams in unusual places, and be certain no one else will have the same pair of blues.

The collection is called Resurrection (right), and comes at a premium price of $995 per pair (most Hudson denim goes for $215 to $325). We chatted with designer Ben Taverniti (below), who has been creating couture pieces featured in the likes of French Vogue since age 19, about the collection, his philosophies and all things Hudson Jeans.

Luxist: What makes Hudson jeans so special and worth so much more than other brands?

Benjamin Taverniti: The Spring/Summer 2010 HUDSON Collection is the ultimate expression of the HUDSON brand consisting of four distinct groups – Minimalist, D.I.Y., Subversion and Resurrection (each jean is one of a kind). We source our fabric from the finest mills in Japan and Italy. Design, construction, and quality are our utmost priority.

L: How has your notorious couture past influenced the way you design jeans?

BT: It’s trained my eye to be extremely critical and precise with fits, which is the most important thing when it comes to denim.

L: Do you have any advice for men and women who want to look hot in their jeans? What should they look for?

BT: Jeans do not make you … you make the jeans … Style should be fearless and confident.

L: What’s your favorite style of jeans? What do you wear (and why)?

BT: Skinnies — they just feel right.

L: So, let’s talk about Resurrection. What makes each pair different? Are there any similarities between pairs?

BT: Each pair is completely one of a kind. To create the jean, we sew blankets out of past samples and vintage Hudsons, then cut a pattern from there. We never use two of the same jean to create a single pair.

L: How did you decide on the placement and usage of buttons, pockets, cut, color, zipper style, seams, etc.?

BT: I created the first pair with placements that I like, but I really wanted each pair to be an individual expression of the person creating it. Every resurrection jean is hand cut and hand sewn, so it portrays the unique style of the person who made them, and the wearer.

L: I like that they are recycled from previous styles — but why? Were they left over from past seasons?

BT: We keep archives of all of our past collections going back to the start of the company. I wanted to find a way to breathe new life into them — they are a reinterpretation of Hudson history.

L: What is the size range for Resurrection jeans?

BT: Sizes 24-32.

L: If you could design a pair of jeans for anyone in the world, who would it be — and what kind of jeans would they be?

BT: Georgia May Jagger is the “face” of our brand. Her genetic DNA and our brand DNA are one and the same … her mother Jerry Hall is American (born in Texas) and her father is Mick Jagger (British rock royalty) and Hudson is born in California, but rooted in London. She is also the ultimate Hudson girl — the personification of rock-and-roll meets glamour, who embodies California freedom and British cool. She is effortlessly stylish and isn’t afraid to take risks or to be herself while creating her own destiny.

Being a fan of the film, Lady Sings the Blues, I have to wonder…Can Ms. Paula hold her own with Ms. Dianna Ross?…An American Icon in her own right?…I know it’s just a photo shoot, but to me Dianna’s eyes say it all. She definitely wins against Paula.

They ask her a million annoying questions about single life vs. married life, but she still remains one of the most photogenic and interesting-looking actresses out there.

Another day, another tragedy in glossyland. Ads are down and Vogue leads the pack with the largest drop in pages.

Would it be bad to rub it in now, or should I wait for later?

I’ve never been a big fan of the glossy world of fashion. Magazines have always seemed like a dead technology and being that since I could type I’ve gotten my info from the internet, I’ve always known it was merely a matter of time before the old print and mighty saw some declines and was forced to play the even, democratizing field called the World Wide Web. Well, last quarters numbers are in and boy does it look very, very bad. Expect some more firings and dare I say it, Anna Wintour on the subway, within the year.
“Allure saw a 35 percent drop in ad pages to 214 pages in the first quarter, while Vogue declined 28 percent, or 218 pages, to a total of 563 for the period. Glamour declined 22 percent to 291, and W posted a 40 percent drop, or 218 ad pages, for the quarter, carrying 322 pages. Glamour’s 291 ad pages this quarter reflect a 22 percent slide. And as same-store sales at retailers continue to slide, shopping magazine Lucky saw a 35 percent contraction in ad pages, raking in 203 pages for the first quarter.

At Hearst Magazines, Town & Country has seen a 30 percent decline in the quarter: The magazine carried 247 pages for the first three issues of the year. Harper’s Bazaar carried 396 pages, a 21 percent decrease compared to 2008, while Cosmopolitan’s 305 pages are 48 pages, or 14 percent, below last year’s total. O, The Oprah Magazine reported a 20 percent slide in pages, to 305. Marie Claire is off 16 percent, totaling 214 ad pages. Meanwhile, Elle dropped 26 percent, gathering 435 pages through March. In Style, whose publisher, Lynette Harrison Brubaker, is leaving the Time Inc. title, reported a 29 percent drop in paging, to 436.”

Some major glossies are reporting serious declines in their newstand sales including Conde Nast’s W and Teen Vogue. Apparently, readers are skipping the tree killing medium for a little something called the Internet (a.k.a FashionIndie.com).

Hitting the newsstands is September is Glamour magazine. Normally Glamour is always hitting the right notes; a fun read to divulge into the world of beauty, fashion, news, and tips (not before Fashionindie of course), but we can’t say we agree with one of their articles in the making. Glamour is set to release an article, in their September issue, featuring “Seven People Who Could Change Your Style”. The list is less than impressive. The seven “fashionistas” include Pat McGrath, Victoria Beckham, Christian Louboutin, Alber Elbaz, Takashi Murakami, Serge Normant, and Agyness Deyn. Though many of these men and women have made significant names for themselves, I think it’s a little overboard to say that these seven people would change anyones style. Don’t get me wrong, their individual and unique and they let their clothes speak for themselves, but to say they start the trend? It’s ridiculous!
