- The NYPD must be working overtime…or just be really bored — who are we kidding, it’s the latter. A few months ago a man stole a jacket from a John Varvatos store by swapping it with his own and the boys in blue tracked him down using the DNA from the wadded up chewing gum the thief left in the jacket pocket. Now that’s what I call a sticky situation. [Racked]

- Finally the future’s pulling its act together. Google‘s new super high-tech augmented reality eyeglasses brings us one step closer to the Dystopian present we’ve been promised for so many years. Oh, and there are flying cars. [Huff Po]

- Misunderstood fashion designer Kanye West has debuted a new song called “Theraflu,” on which he waxes and flosses poetic about dining with Anna Wintour, “racin’ with Anja Rubik,” and dodging a curvaceous bullet in the form of Kim Kardashian. [Fashionista]

- Bravo, no doubt sensing a lull in fashion-related programming in primetime, has picked up a new show about LA vintage store, Decades, tentatively titled It’s an Old, Old Concept. [WWD]

- A fire in the basement of Macy’s flagship store at Herald Sq yesterday afternoon is still under investigation. But since it’s down the street from FashionIndie HQ, we’d like to officially state we burn down many things but never a department store. [NY Post]

- Beyoncé has finally made her presence known to her some 3 mil+ Twitter followers, announcing the launch of her new website, beyonce.com. I could watch her twirling that lace-front wig around all day. And have. [Bey's Twitter]

Call it a fashion foreign exchange program. The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund will launch a new initiative with China this spring when Proenza Schouler‘s Jack McCullough and Lazaro Hernandez trek out to Shanghai and Shanghai-based designer Uma Wang takes a bite out of the Big Apple.

With backing from Michael Kors co-chairman Silas Chou, the China Exchange program will foster talent from both sides of the globe as the East becomes a larger and more important market. According to CFDA CEO Steven Kolb, this isn’t a one-time thing, either. “We never want to do anything as a one-off. We really like to connect and invest in things that have real meaning and depth,” he told WWD.

Wang will make two visits to the states, first in May and then she’ll return for New York Fashion Week. During her stays, the designer will work with Andrew Rosen‘s Theory as well as with tanned turtlenecked titan Michael Kors and visit Barneys, Google and Xanadu itself, the offices of Vogue. Oh, and she’ll also be put up by W Hotels.

No word yet on what the Proenza kids will be doing but after such an amazing experience, by the time NYFW rolls around Wang will already have Freaky Friday’d one of them.
Our idea of a perfect man? Abs you can wash your dirty clothes clean on + a brain that creates and codes social media empires. Give me an ass you can bounce a dime off and a back sculpted from marble, and I’m listening. Which is why, in our steamiest fantasies, we can Instagram the nerdy social media founding Twits into a sexy Facebooks that make us go Googley-eyed. From [four]square to super stud.

We don't know where we'd be without the über addictive microblogging site, and 15,000 of our followers would have to agree. We're in love with this blue eyed stud, especially when his abs are rippling in under 140 characters.

You told me that my ex boyfriend was cheating on me. You showed me what a hot mess I was at Mardi Gras 2010. You let me know my interns were stealing samples and wearing them out to frat bars with their friends. You are a real friend, and if you had this gleaming torso, I'd let you poke me any day.

Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai, we thank you, not only for your smizing eyes and windswept hair, but for also for your new found careers as male models.

No other app has shot our self confidence as amateur photographers higher, and we appreciate Mikey K and Kevin Systrom for their thoughtfulness, and for their blur effect.
It’s about time Google released its master plan! Google has announced it will integrate Google+ into what will be called “personal results.” Now, when you search anything on Google, you have the option of seeing what people in your social networks are saying about the topic – it’s not just at the bottom of the search anymore!

This nuance is going to be extremely helpful when it comes to deciding what to wear to a party, what to pair with that new sweater, what the hottest trends are, etc. Of course, if they are your friends IRL, you can always text your question, but mass texting pains aside, how many times have you needed an answer ASAP and your friends were super slow to respond?

Am I the only one who thinks this integration is incredibly cool?

I don’t think I’ve ever noticed how much Justin Bieber and Emma Watson look alike. I mean, they could be sisters! Justin, naturally, would be the prettier, younger sister while Emma would be the brains of the family. But the reason for their slightly disturbing visual similarities surely rests in their treasured locks, which have both gained praise from The Wall Street Journal as the most influential haircuts of 2011, proving that ladies and lesbians the world over love a short crop.

According to WSJ, “hairstylists are being inundated with requests for pixie cuts and the Bieber swish. The enthusiasm plays out online, where the fastest-rising searches for celebrity haircuts on Google are for Ms. Watson and Mr. Bieber.” Is that what the Bieber swish is? And here I thought that was a derogatory term for the way he walked. Either way, here’s hoping that the two trendsetters are never romantically-linked since it would be perhaps the creepiest celebrity coupling since Bradley Cooper and…well, anyone.
Though Paris may be the epitome of high fashion, Tokyo has stuck a chopstick in the realm of fast-fashion with it’s biannual Tokyo Girls Collection. TGC is Fashion Week meets Comic-Con, with over 20,000 attendees forking over as much as 7500 yen ($91.59 — at least the dollar is worth something somewhere) to be part of the action. As models strut down the runway during the 7-hour event, participants can buy the fashions using their cell phones while enjoying J-pop performances peppered throughout the day. And for the first time in TGC’s six year history, the event will be live-streamed.

In partnership with Google, the organizers of TGC have created a custom platform to live-stream on YouTube, broadcasting not only the fashion show, but also backstage footage and interviews with the models. Unfortunately, if any of the looks strike your fancy, you’re shit out of luck. That is unless you live in Japan; deliveries are limited to the Land of the Rising Sun.

Though specializing in fast-fashion, TGC will enter the luxury lane thanks to another lucrative partner: Vogue. Vogue Girl, a stand-alone publication, will hit Japanese newsstands on March 12; but before then, Vogue Girl will mount a special fashion show, combining local fast-fashion brands with luxury accessories from the likes of Yves Saint Laurent, Fendi and Marc Jacobs.

I wonder, with Tokyo Girl Collection crossing the cybernetic seas, if we can expect a similar event here in the states? I mean, Fashion Week could only benefit from a little J-pop.

If you’ve attended an “Ugly Christmas Sweater Party” in the last few years, you’re part of a growing trend returning to holiday nostalgia. Searches for “ugly Christmas sweaters” are up 30 percent in December compared with last year, according to Google’s research tool Insights for Search.

The spiked return to puff-paint and Santa applique sweatshirts and Alpine-inspired sweaters is something we haven’t seen since the mid-80s. Even Ebay’s sales of holiday sweaters are up 24 percent from last year. But you’d better get yours early next year. Stores like Buffalo Exchange in the East Village sold out of the novelty knits super quickly this year, leaving many sweater-less for kitschy Christmas parties.

“At this point, I’ve given up,” says Eric Foster, a 27-year old production coordinator from Brooklyn, who had hoped to find a green sweater, preferably involving snowflakes and reindeer, to wear to holiday gatherings this year.

Better luck next time!

YouTube’s CEO quit his job for fashion. The Internet mogul reportedly wants to focus more attention on his menswear label, Hlaska. Hey. If Kanye can leave music for fashion, why can’t Web geekers?

What do you do after selling to Google for $1.65 billion and get tired of pointing and clicking? You dive into fashion! YouTube CEO & Co-Founder Chad Hurley is set to take the plunge. The Internet to fashion crossover may seem completely random, but Hurley doesn’t think so.

“We make wallets, bags and shirts we’d want to see sold in stores. In that sense, it’s exactly like YouTube. We wanted something that wasn’t available, so we built it ourselves.”

I haven’t seen Hurley’s designs yet, but if anybody can create a buzz that “goes viral,” it’s this guy.

We’ve been getting a lot of slack lately for pushing the envelope in terms of the types of spreads we feature. Our answer is always the same “It’s Only Fashion.” Well it seems like another publication is getting some negative attention for showing a bit more skin than is deemed acceptable by the censors.

V Magazine has been listed as PORNOGRAPHY on searches produced by Google. What this means is that the dotcom for one of my favorite magazines is banned on nearly 50 million computers which use Net Nanny’s across the web. I get that their content could be a bit risque at times, but catergorizing this publication with the likes of Playboy, Hustler, and Barely Legal seems like a bit of a stretch Google.

I recently had the pleasure of being selected as a spokesblogger for the new T-Mobile G1 phone, you know that little Sidekick looking flip from the friendly gods at Google. While it was difficult to put down my iPhone for a weekend (where am I without you Steve Jobs), I gave the Android powered little device a go.

Since I’m all about applications, I headed to Android Market to grab any that were fashion related. I found two (though I hear that many more on the way) one called ShopSavvy, which is a shopping comparison services, and MyCloset, a program that lets you photograph your wardrobe and create outfits based off the images.

Since I was planning on skipping through the retail strip known as Madison Ave for some much needed recession-supported deals at Barneys, I took the flip with me on the trip. After mapping the trip using the phones Google maps, I made a beeline for the Mens Department to pick out some highly covetable Michael Bastian pieces. Using ShopSavvy I snapped a few barcodes and was taken to a couple of his pieces at Neiman Marcus, the deals weren’t as good as Barneys, but I decided to pass on the $660 dress shirts (maybe after I pay my rent).

I then checked my gmail and received an email featuring a sale on PegLeg. I took off and once again used maps to get me to Bowery to check out the sale. Didn’t pick up any goodness but got to talk to some people who were avids of the brand.

I snapped a few shots of the sale goodies and sent them to PR dude Corey Moran, who insisted on making his way down to the sale. Later I headed home to get to work on mapping my closet. As of writing, I’m still working on it (yeah, I’ve amassed a fairly large collection in my years). I haven’t picked up my iPhone in a few days, but I haven’t missed it as much as I thought.

Thanks T-Mobile for letting me check out your phone for a few, I’m definitely hearting it.
