Boutique Critique:: Court: Look 1

Boutique Critique was taken to Court. I can’t get into the specifics of the arrest, but I will fiercely deny any allegations that it involved Rebecca Black and a finely sharpened object last Friday… Well, the trial ensues upon the lacquered black floor of the Court room, with a film noir NY color palette and western-leaning-California vibes; highly suspect if you ask me. Reimagined t-shirts of many weights and structures intersperse silken black dresses, leathers, sweaters and the occasional floor length chiffon. Though the case appeared to be rather black and white, shades of gray and few jumping hues peeked through as evidence of the brighter buying choices. The jury has been out for the whole week, and they want more proof. Over the course of this week, come sit in on the trial, and help us reach a final verdict.

Look One: Shredded ‘n’ Leather

The Long Tube Skirt: Mary Meyer, $94

California native cum NY transplant Mary Meyer fuses her talent for art into clothing that makes sense. Most notable for her geo-graphics and dyeing, she also has some revolutionary ideas about garment making. The construction of the skirt is what inspires me: she’s purposefully left the knit hemline unfinished so that the wearer may cut it to the desired length, no tailor required. The ground grazing-option takes effect when you place the waistline at any height. Named the AJM Skirt for Andrew J. Mukamal of Kell On Earth assistantship, Meyer was inspired by his grunge gone goth glam; long soft layers that counterpose plaid and leather.

The Shredded Top: Evil Twin, $89

“A physical copy of one’s self whom has altered morality” is the definition of this Australian brand’s namesake. I gather that this Evil Twin‘s twin shirt would not have holes, nor spaced fringe, nor a marble tie dye, all of which sneakily camouflage my exposed skin. With the skirt up high resting just below the bosom, I only have need for a bust long top. This holy top was born to move and shake, so if scandal isn’t your thing, throw a hot bandeau underneath as a bra, and let the hue show through. Lest you end up locked up for indecent exposure.

The Leather Jacket: Kill City, $458

With a slouch squared collar and super long sleeve lining, the relaxed rocker jacket is the ideal weight for Spring’s transition. Based in LA, Kill City is forged in that flexible weather to the sound of the rockin’ punk wail of Iggy Pop.

The Side-Laced Wedge: Madison Harding, $185 (originally $265)

Created intently for the downtown pavement pounder, these suede wedge booties ground the outfit’s transitional effect. Hilary Rosenman of Madison Ave., N.Y. and Barri Budin of Harding Dr., N.J. hauled their fashion knowledge to the East Village and began making astutely designed Madison Harding shoes.

The Hair Corset: Court, $48

Their very own hair corset comes from the Native American tradition of hair tying. They lace up like the top of a riding boot and encapsulate the pony tail. More details on this piece in the coming looks.

If you have to go to Court, this is for sure the one to go to.

1. Rick Owens Leather Biker Coat, $2915.80: Every overgrown goth needs a little bit of Rick Owens, and this beats the puffy Lands End shit I’m forced to wear all winter ANY day.

2. David Bowie Station to Station Deluxe Edition Box Set , $100: Argue with me all you want, but David Bowie is the perfect gentleman. Those eyes! Those cheekbones! A wardrobe to make any couture queen scream! Not to mention 40+ years of killer tunes, and the icy, teutonic, paranoid Thin White Duke was untouchable.

3.Givenchy Nightingale Maxi, $2351: A friend of mine recently said that she’d value a Givenchy bag over going to college. Since I’ve already given college a go–and the hefty price tag is POCKET CHANGE compared to a year’s tuition–I think I’ve earned it.

4. Comme des Garçons Series 3: Incense, $80 for one and $380 for the whole shebang: For those days when I feel like a hedonistic, luxurious mystical queen lounging in my 19th-century opium den (read: every day), these heady scents are positively divine.

5. A TARDIS , priceless: Space RULES. Time travel RULES.

Crystal Castles Meet Robert Smith, Electro-Goth Awesomeness Ensues

If booze-drenched electrohipsters Crystal Castles tell you that goth is cool again, you damn well better listen. Extra-hold hairspray required for entry.

In a surprisingly awesome move, Alice Glass (and the other dude) rope in goth yodeler/poster child for tortured angst Robert Smith to sing over Crystal Castles’ single, “I’m Not in Love.”

It’s the best thing anyone connected to the Cure has done in, like, 20 years. A thumping electro banger cut with Smith’s trademark misery, it’s totally okay to unleash your inner goth now.

As long as your inner goth does not look like this.

Creep Out Your Friends: 6 Best Halloween Songs

So you’re at a Halloween party, chowing down on your fun-size Snickers bars, when all of a sudden your hipster friends play “The Monster Mash.” As much as we love boogieing with Frankenstein, the song sucks. Try these tunes specially designed to give your lame friends nightmares for days.
1. Screamin’ Jay Hawkins: I Put a Spell On You

The original and the best. Many have tried, but none compare to the voodoo master. When performing this song, Screamin’ Jay would wear a cape and emerge from a coffin on stage–not to mention the fog, real live snakes, tusks in his nose, and a rather charming cigarette-smoking skull called Henry. He’s kind of a lunatic.

2. Bauhaus: Stigmata Martyr

Talk about commitment! The Godfathers of Goth used to drive around in a funeral car called the Bauhearse, and when performing the sorta cliché vampire hit “Bela Lugosi’s Dead,” manorexic singer Peter Murphy would hang upside down like a bat. For ten minutes. But now that vamps have been co-opted by sparkly Twihards, we look instead to this tortured ode to a fucked-up Catholic childhood…he and Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy would probably be besties.

3. The Horrors: Sheena is a Parasite

When the big-haired, twig-legged Horrors emerged in 2006 with names like Spyder Webb and Joshua Von Grimm, you kind of knew what you were gonna get. They’ve since ditched the spooky kid names, but their debut single (and creepmaster Chris Cunningham‘s video) can still make the hairs on the back of your neck stick up. At only 90 seconds long, it’ll leave your guests wondering what the hell just happened.

4. The Sisters of Mercy: This Corrosion

There’s an eerie children’s choir, lead singer Andrew Eldritch looking miserable in the rain, and the broad looks like Elvira with less impressive cleavage. ‘Nuff said.

5. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: Red Right Hand

Some more song titles from Nick Cave‘s oeuvre: “I’m Gonna Kill That Woman,” “Release the Bats,” “Jack the Ripper,” and an entire album of Murder Ballads. Any song from the coolest Australian ever would do, but it’s this Scream staple that’s regarded as his most disturbing. Cave’s sinster, strained vocals, the skulking beat, and the murderous lyrics sound like a horror movie come to life. That hand’s red for a reason.

6. Roky Erickson and the Aliens: I Walked With a Zombie

This is what happens when you take a lot of hallucinogenic drugs. After spending some time in a hospital for the criminally insane, psychedelic legend Roky Erickson wrote a whole album devoted to ghouls, aliens, demons, and just being totally nuts. That said, you can probably outrun a zombie.

And finally, put on Thriller. It’s a jam, and after all this doom and gloom, your creeped-out friends will probably just want to dance.
