Kelly was born a poor Mississippi lad who, at an early age, took to art and fashion thanks to his grandmother. Having later attended Parsons School of Design, he eventually moved to France after receiving an anonymous one-way plane ticket to Paris. There he scored a job as a costume designer and would sell fried chicken dinners on the side to make ends meet – It’s called  W-E-R-Q, ladies.

Kelly’s designs were soon recognized and in high demand. His colorful and flirty clothes caught the attention of the Chambre Syndicale, an elite fashion group based out of Paris where only the most famous designers gain admission. Kelly earned a spot showing at the Louvre Palace in 1988 thanks to this sought-after and blew the crowd away with his fitted silhouettes, bold color choices and avant-garde fascinators.

Tragically, Kelly passed away in 1990 at the age of 40, leaving behind a most colorful memory. In primarily using African-American models, Kelly paved the way for such famous names as Naomi Campell, Grace Jones, Iman and Tyra Banks.

Lauren Hutton (Nov. 17, 1943) That signature gap has been captivating audiences for four decades. both on and off the runway. Hutton easily transitioned from model to actress with roles in American Gigolo and The Gambler, but never forgot where her roots lay. Lest we forget, our senior citizens can still turn it.

- An Ascot. Nothing says class like an ascot. But it being both summer and Pride — and the Art Fag being gay and thus secretly a whore deep down — he can pair it with his favorite billowy tank and booty short combo. And considering the proliferation of ascots on Prada’s Spring 2012 runway, you’ll be giving him the best gift of all: being ahead of the trend.

-  Tickets to Master Class. Forget Beyoncé, hang Gaga and don’t even mention Katy Perry. When it comes to divas, the Art Fag is not easily impressed. Maria Callas was DIVA on a whole other level: having an affair with Aristotle Onassis, downing tapeworms left and right to lose weight and generally owning the world. Played to critical acclaim by Tony and Emmy winner Tyne Daly in Terrence McNally‘s play, Master Class, the Art Fag will be brought to an edge of glory to which Gaga could never bring him.

- Duffy by Chris Duffy. Brian Duffy, one of the few photographers to shoot the Pirelli calendar twice, lost his shit in the late-70s — didn’t we all? — and burned a ton of his negatives in the garden behind his house. Luckily, some of them were salvaged/recovered and are now available in this recently released tome on the iconic photographer that will inspire even the most temperamental Art Fag. Which is just about every Art Fag.

- Grace Jones’ Nightclubbing. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this week, Grace Jones’ classic disco/reggae/post-punk dance album is likely to get your Art Fag up and flailing about despite his best ambivalent, cooler-than-thou intentions. Nightclubbing features Jones covering songs by Bill Withers, Iggy Pop and Flash and the Pan as well as her ode to anal sex and the double entendre, “Pull Up to the Bumper. ” And what’s gayer than buttsex and wit, especially when delivered by an androgynous fashion model? Not a goddamn thing, that’s what.

- Absolut Vodka. At the end of the day, Pride’s about celebrating who you are and if there’s one thing the gays love to do is celebrate. Excessively. And Art Fags love to get wasted as much as, if not more than, the next trashy girl. Absolut, a longtime supporter of LGBT issues — look no further than the various Absolut-inspired challenges on RuPaul’s Drag Race –  also goes well with anything: orange juice, seltzer, regret…

Head of the Class — As and high Bs all around:

Lady Gaga in Mugler — Leave it to Gags to show up shitting tulle in a bodysuit, 24-inch tranny heels and an aquamarine wig. You don’t win the Fashion Icon award by resting on your Hussein Chalayan rebirthing egg laurels.

Daphne Guinness in Abed Mahfouz – Another member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Tranny Heel, the always impeccable Daphne Guinness chose relatively unknown Beirut designer,  Abed Mahfouz to wonderful effect .

Kirsten Dunst in Patrik Ervell — I feel like I’m experiencing a Kirsten Dunst renaissance. First she wins the top acting prize at Cannes, now I actually like her choice in red carpet attire? What goes on here? Though honestly, I’m always a sucker for a woman in a tux and a high bun.

Karolina Kurkova in Diane von Furstenberg — An emerald, hooded jumpsuit, sashed at the waist? Karolina literally looks like the ghost of Grace Jones…and she very well might be since god knows where the hell that brick house full of crazy is these days.

Chloë Sevigny in Chloë Sevigny for Opening Ceremony — Leather and lace and giving face. Nothing’s wrong with a little free self-promotion, though her lady humps seem to be angling for some attention all their own.

Betsey Johnson in Betsey Johnson — Why the hell not? Betsey looks great — and in all black! — but the tulle ballerina skirt remains in tact, if only a few inches south. But for girls our age, Bets, everything ends up heading south eventually.

Chanel Iman in BCBG Max Azria — Lady and the vamp! Looks like Chanel and Karolina both hopped on the same 70s soul train, but with a bit of leg, a flash of cleav and a shoulder or two, Chanel is ready to steam up some mirrored disco balls.

Call me crazy just as long as you call Michelle Harper perfect. I’m not sure what she’s wearing, but I want one in every color.

Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen in The Row — I’m convulsing over MK’s gold lamé jacket, I just wish Ash had chosen to accessorize a little more. Hair up, statement necklace and a cat eye never hurt anyone. The Row bags, while cute, also look like mini-briefcases, which for an evening dress, is a little jarring.

Vera Wang in Vera Wang – Vera, Vera, Vera. While I love a cowl neck, this look makes Morticia Addams look like Patricia Goddamn Field. Where’s the color? Where’s the fun? I would’ve taken a beading wedding gown over this funereal frump any day of the week.

Erin Fetherston in Erin Fetherston — The CFDAs might have to instill a ban on designers dressing themselves. Though the dress is lovely — and that bang is flawless — the color washes Erin out completely. Also, another lack of accessories! Does no one wear jewelry anymore?

Expelled — Failing grades, F’s, you

Joy Bryant (and Rachel Roy) in Rachel Roy — For the permanent record, Rachel looks good, not her best look, but she gets a passing grade. Barely. Because after all, she also dressed Joy, who’s going to have to stay after school and bang the erasers. And from the looks of that dress, she might also be banging the janitor.

Tory Burch in Tory Burch — You can try to dress up a burlap sack as much as possible, but then it’s just a burlap sack with some awful polka dots and some even more awful ill-placed beads. Or bottlecaps. What are those actually?

Sessilee Lopez in Zac Posen — One question: why? An old lady dress on a stunning, young supermodel still looks like an old lady dress. And frankly, I doubt any dames of a certain age would be caught dead wearing this. It’s unflattering, there’s too much going on about the bodice and worst of all it looks cheap. Zac, I would like to see you in my office. Bring the butt paddle.

Cool As Ice [1991] Starring Naomi Campbell as “Singer at First Club

Tagline: “When a girl has a heart of stone, there’s only one way to melt it. Just add Ice.” [Seriously.]

Before 8 Mile, there was another biopic about a white rapper trying to make his way out of…the ghetto (?). And lucky us, not only were we treated to Naomi’s acting, but her vocal chops as well on the film’s classic composition…wait for it…“Cool as Ice”. Robert Van Winkle’s music and film career fizzled shortly after this cinematic exercise in ego-stroking though Naomi has continued to make the occasional cameo when not dodging a subpoena.

Fair Game [1995] Starring Cindy Crawford as Kate McQuean

Tagline: “He’s a cop on the edge. She’s a woman with a dangerous secret. And now they’re both…

Cindy stars as a civil law attorney who seeks the aid of the forgotten Baldwin — poor  Billy – a cop who vows to protect her from some renegade KGB team out to exterminate her. The film proved a huge hit…at the 1996 Razzie Awards where it was nominated for Worst Actress, Worst New Star (both honors for Cindy) and Worst Screen Couple. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) that year Showgirls swept nearly every category. Liz Berkley has never been the same.

Conan the Destroyer [1984] Starring Grace Jones as Zula

Tagline: “The most powerful legend of all is back in a new adventure.”

A childhood favorite of  mine…before I knew that my fondness for Arnold Schwarzenegger in a fur loincloth was anything out of the ordinary, the sequel to Conan the Barbarian features the always terrifying Grace Jones as a scantily clad warrior princess. Apparently Grace’s enthusiasm was a little too much for poor ole muscle-bound Arnold, who complained Jones was “too tough” during filming. Grow a pair, Schwarzenegger…or just borrow Grace’s.

The Fifth Element [1997] Starring Milla Jovovich as Leeloo

Tagline: “There is no future without it.”

Jovovich has starred in over 30 films — half of them from the Resident Evil franchise — but her best role to date is still in Luc Besson‘s modern sci-fi classic. As the titular element, Milla yells and grunts and generally kicks ass throughout the entire film and she hasn’t laid down her action hero mantle since. Although the most acting she’s done since then has taken place in L’Oreal commercials.

Taxi [2004] Starring Gisele as Vanessa

Tagline: “Take a Ride on the Wild Side.”

Hmm, when your script requires a quartet of sexy Brazilian bank robbers, why not enlist the world’s foremost sexy Brazilian? Gisele tackled the challenging role of the gang’s “cold” and “calculating” leader in her film debut, but with only one other film under her tiny, couture belt (she has a cameo in Devil Wears Prada), it doesn’t look like she’ll be rendered in celluloid any time soon.

Grace Jones (May 19, 1948) Part supermodel, part mental patient, part disco/New Wave/dancehall queen, Grace Jones is an enigma, wrapped in a question, wrapped in a kimono. Her distinctive style and personality are a constant source of inspiration, from musicians like Rihanna and Lady Gaga to magazine editorials, who find her a favorite subject in particular. And is it any wonder? That type of crazy comes along but once in an androgynous moon.

Beverly Johnson (Oct. 13, 1952) Bev Johnson’s name will go down in history as the first black woman on the cover of U.S. Vogue. The 1974 cover was groundbreaking as Vogue has and continues to be and probably will always be the definitive fashion bible. Johnson’s entree into the big leagues was a watershed moment for models of all diversities. Bev was only 22, so when you peak that early I guess the only way you can go is Def Jam’s How to Be a Player.

Janice Dickinson (Feb. 15, 1955) Our second Top Model judge (but first, in terms of service rendered), Janice Dickinson is all but unrecognizable today after the full facial transplant she’s had done over the years. But at her peak in the 70s, she was darkly exotic and really the definition of drop-dead gorgeous — looking at her older pictures I literally want to kill myself. In 1979, she claimed she coined the term “supermodel” (though the credit is often given to Andy Warhol a decade earlier) when her manager told her that she shouldn’t work so hard because she wasn’t Superman. Janice’s response: ”I am not Superman. I am a supermodel.” And then she threw a drink in his face and preceded to make out with him. Classic Dickinson.

Iman (July 25, 1955) With her long, graceful neck and statuesque beauty, Iman looks like she was actually plucked out of a Somalian village and thrown on a runway, but in reality she was discovered by photog Peter Beard while she was studying political science in Nairobi. Upon coming to New York in 1975, however, she happily played along with the myth that Beard had discovered her as “a teen tribeswoman tending 500 cattle and sheep in a Kenyan game preserve.” What followed is one of the greatest careers in modern fashion history: a muse for Yves Saint Laurent, Issey Miyake and Calvin Klein, an entrepreneur and the one woman (or man) to tame David Bowie.

Jerry Hall (July 2, 1956) After dropping some acid at a party, Jerry Hall was convinced she could make it as a model. Hailing from Texas, she was the All-American girl of the 70s, who just happened to do some very naughty things with some notable Europeans; chief among them Mick Jagger, from whose superstar loins was spawned their pillow-lipped progeny, supermodel-on-the-rise, Georgia May Jagger. It’s clear that in this case, she definitely gets it from her mama.

Jerry Hall always looked like Jerry Hall – that incredible head of hair, that flawless complexion, cheekbones from which the world hangs – but it wasn’t until she took LSD that she even considered modelling as a viable path:

‘ “A boy gave me a quarter of a tab. I didn’t know what it was!” she says. “I actually had never taken drugs and was very nervous. And I never did take drugs [afterward] ever, ever. But I locked myself in the bathroom and spent the whole night staring in the mirror, going, ‘Oh, my God.’” She runs her fingers over the contours of her face. “All of a sudden, I thought, Wow!” ‘

Similar story, I once took shrooms and realized that I could taste colors. Red tastes like pennies.

Jerry, along with her sister Terry, ended up in Paris, where they roomed with a young Grace Jones. Jerry and Grace would put on cabaret shows for their friends, which I’m hoping involved a “Who’s On First”-type skit performed with Jerry straddling Grace, who would be on all fours wearing nothing but a saddle and a strap-on horse tail.

Hall met Dalí at a club that she and Grace would frequent. He asked her to come to Spain to film her wearing only a white veil. She turned down the famous artist’s request because she had promised her dear old mother she wouldn’t pose nude. They just don’t make ‘em like that anymore. Unless you count her pillowy-lipped daughter with Mick Jagger, Georgia May.

Which I don’t.

Jerry, however, is very proud that Georgia May and Lizzy have followed in her long, graceful strides and shares this anecdote:

“I gave them all these films to watch. Marlene Dietrich, Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyck, and Mae West. Actually, they both shot with Karl Lagerfeld, and he was saying to them, ‘Okay, be Bette Davis in The Letter.’ And they knew what to do! He said, ‘Oh, my God. I never work with girls who know what I’m talking about! Your mother trained you so well.’ So funny!”

Jerry Hall sounds like the best mother ever. Meanwhile, Karl Lagerfeld could tell me to be Bette Davis in anything and I’d be ready at the drop of a hat.

A few months back, Nous Sommes released pendants in the likenesses of Karl Lagerfeld, Lady Gaga, and the King of Pop. Their newest batch? How about the original Gaga (Grace Jones), photog Terry Richardson, and golden-era blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe? Protect ya neck.

After an all-star punk festival fell apart, the bands involved found themselves with some spare scratch and a landscape ripe for shootouts and standoffs.  The plot revolves around three hitmen/bank robbers who happen upon a small town populated by wild and wacky weirdos who they have to commingle with while they wait for the heat to die down.  Things, of course, go awry.  Honestly the plot is secondary though to the rollicking nature of the film, the setpieces, and total absurdity.

The film’s cast reads like a who’s who of the era’s punk and new wave scene.  There’s Joe Strummer, The Pogues, The Circle Jerks, Grace Jones, Elvis Costello, and even soon-to-be indie film god Jim Jarmusch.  And as an extra added bonus they’re all playing dress up.  Oh and Courtney Love‘s there too.

And she’s dressed well, which shouldn’t be much of a surprise if you follow her new Tumblr.  Pink dress with white polka dots not unlike this offering from Leifsdottir.  She might want to close those legs though.  But the matching watermelon‘s a nice touch.

Concerning the guys, check out Dick Rude‘s pants.  They’re very reminiscent of pairs shown off by Vivienne Westwood on a regular basis, which only seems fitting considering her place as the godmother of punk fashion.  Joe Strummer’s got on a ho-hum slim black suit but such a suit is almost always a recipe for looking good.

The gorgeous Jennifer Balgobin is, throughout the movie, basically a walking ad for American Apparel.  Look at the top picture for an example.  Spandex top?  Check.  High waisted bottoms?  Check.  That’s not to say she doesn’t class it up a little, though.  A simple, strapless blue dress which looks perfect for the weather…and also strikingly like this Jason Wu.

It’s almost frightening how much the women’s wardrobe in this movie matches up with pieces you’d find in today’s boutiques trending towards the younger gal.  Despite the film’s being over two decades old, the dress pictured above is here, here, and here.  And the boyfriend shirt?  Too many links to think about.

Similarly, this little white number on Michele Winstanley (I think) who, throughout the film, makes you wonder if Karen O got her whole schtick from this one character.  But back to the dress.  Ta-da!  And while the mariachi dressed men behind her probably aren’t exactly in style, they still look pretty awesome.

But before you think there’s only things for the ladies, say hello to Jeeves/Whitey and his killer pink summer suit.  Once again, very similar to something Westwood-ian, it also brings to mind pieces from Junya Watanabe and Filippa K.

The best ensemble in the entire movie, though, is definitely what Jim Jarmusch has got on.  It’s as if the director of such weirdo movies as Mystery Train, Dead Man, and Night On Earth decided to go as Karl Lagerfeld for Halloween.  And it is awesome.

Be warned: Straight to Hell is by no means a cinematic masterpiece, nor will it be in most people’s eyes ‘competent filmmaking’, what with a 5.5 rating on IMDB.  But if you go in with the right attitude, it’s as fun as Robocop and as splendorous as any period piece without being dry and/or expected.  Do yourself a favor and watch it.  (HINT: It’s on YouTube for free).

Becks and Daniel Saynt headed to Valencia Fashion Week and all you get is an awesome week of exclusive coverage.

When the IVEX (Instituto Valenciano de la Exportacion) invited us to be their special guest for Valencia Fashion Week, we packed our bags and got ourselves ready for yet another amazing experience in Fashion Indie history.

While the shows don’t start until Tuesday, we’re going to be getting exclusive behind the scenes interviews and showroom tours of some of the greatest designers Valencia has to offer.

I’m currently laying in our beautiful room at the Hotel Dimar, watching El Simpsons trying to figure out if sleeping will better or totally make my jet lag worse.

Have already fallen in HEARTS with Zara. The one here kicks the NYCs versions culito (spanish for booty folks) and Becks picked up an awesome Grace Jones t-shirt. We grabbed a Jane Birken for Zara collection (yeah, I know AWESOME) t-shirt for Kirby and then made our way to Mango. Did you know Leigh Lezark is in their magazine? Will have to send you some scans, but totally weird.  Also, in Spain they produce mini sized versions of all the major fashion magazines. The magazines are half the price of their standard glossy sisters and totally pocketbook friendly. Hint, hint American mags, get on that.

Anyways, Valencia is GORGEOUS. It’s really close to the beach so the area has a Mediterranean/tropical feel that reminds me of what I imagine Monaco would look like. I love it.

Big name actor Josh Hartnett was spotted weaving his way through the crowd to the bar at the Soho Grand last night. Like every Thursday night, the Soho Grand was the place to be as some New York’s trendiest turned up to enjoy some amazing drinks and even better music from DJ’s Lindsay Luv and Jamie Biden.

It seems that the hosting skills of Niko Liakaris, Jon Daly, Fashion Indie and Fresh Productions NYC are top notch, because another notable character by the name of Grace Jones was spotted enjoying the scenery as well. While Grace was chatting up the room feeling right in her element, Hartnett took a view of the room for a corner seat the bar to enjoy his drink.

Not only was Lenny Kravitz on the cover of  Russian Vogue, he was also featured inside as a photographer, taking photos of various celebs who are also his friends.

I have to admit, Grace Jones looks pretty fucking awesome on the cover of V Magazine. Crazy, but awesome. I adore her crystal bowler and pin-thin gold painted eyebrows. Glad they decided to keep the outfit understated, or things would have gotten out of control. Much, much better than the fishnets and thong leotard.

Grace Jones is a weird one. I’m not sure who her stylist was for this little stint on stage, but he or she needs to be fired stat. Here’s Beyonkey Donkey(I mean that with the utmost obsessive desire) gracing the cover of Elle in what has to be the most gangsta promotions blitz since Comb-Over Trump bulldogged his way onto every morning show to rip Rosie O’Donnell a gaping new birthin’ shoot. I wonder if Grace Jones knows that Beyonce challenging her swag? Clearly this new dark chapter in B-style is leading up to the looks that Thierry Mugler will be designing for her tour. I might not be the biggest fan of Grace Jones, but the recent spread featuring the ex-Jamaican singer and shot by Andrea Klarin is quite good. The spread showcases dramatic garments and extravagant head pieces and accessories. Couture Cat Woman anyone? I think so!

I finally figured out what Rihanna’s inspiration was for her newest hit single “Disturbia.” Chris Cunningham recently photographed an “anti-fashion” spread of fashion and music icon Grace Jones for the newest issue of Dazed and Confused. According to We Make It Good, the spread is a collaboration between the artists and the “results come across a little more like Chris Cunningham microwaving Grace Jones’ stem cells with a digital heat lamp.” I couldn’t have said it better myself. And if you haven’t already poured yourself a tall glass of water to wash this all down with, the increasingly disturbing contorted poses will have you thirsty for your innocence. 

If it weren’t for the frightening, almost toothless, face of Ms. Jones, the pile of unknown human muscle and her distraught faces, I think i’d actually like this spread. On a more positive note, I did appreciate the image where smoke is billowing from Jones’ face, the simple backgrounds and the eerie lighting techniques. The last image actually had me reminiscing on my own childhood where mashing your faces against the car window was the funniest thing in the world. Throw in a pair of boobs and an elongated belly button and you’ll laugh just as hard as I did.

60-year-old Grace Jones showed up at the the UK’s Q Awards last night dressed as… a ram?  An ant?  A villain?  Of what we can see of it, I think her face looks pretty good!

When 60 year old models start working their way through the woodwork I begin to worry. Don’t we have more than enough has-beens on Celebreality to keep us occupied?  The elderly Grace Jones has returned to the music scene with an album that’s reminiscent of an Special K laced edition of 80′s dance-off, which is probably the only thing Mrs. Jones remembers from the days she ruled the runways. Alzheimer’s is just so goddamn destructive.
