“It was incredibly glamorous and fantastic. I don’t think I’ll experience something like that again in my lifetime,” said the Oscar-winner of filming the commercial, which debuted Sunday night at www.dior.com.

Adding to the surreal glamour are digital recreations of the late Grace Kelly, Marlene Dietrich and Marilyn Monroe. The three movie legends just happen to be hanging out backstage of the Dior show when Theron storms in, every inch the movie star — giant sunglasses and all — throwing her purse at the first person, place or thing she sees. Then she’s stripped, be-gowned and thrown down the runway to Gossip‘s “Heavy Cross.”

The idea behind this new fashion adventure is “to remodel the styles of classic icons from the past, for example, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, and Katherine Hepburn.” Well, you can never go wrong with old Hollywood, I always say, and it would be interesting to see Kitty Hep’s trouser-loving style translated by someone not really known for wearing pants.

Natali, a Parsons grad, is already outfitting an off-Broadway show and will presumably handle the lion’s share of design duties; especially since big sis is stretched thin as it is, what with the demands of being a global phenomenon and all — something I can identify with (no big deal). The bride doll above wears a replica of Grace’s iconic wedding dress worn when she married Prince Rainier III. Available now is the To Catch a Thief doll, who is wearing a blue chiffon gown reminiscent of a dress worn in Alfred Hitchcock‘s 1955 film. And coming in October is the Romance doll, wearing a floral, full-skirted black dress, replicating what the Princess first wore upon meeting her future husband Prince Rainier III at Cannes Film Festival in 1955.

“I’ve been collecting for 45 years and I’m only 40,” Reynolds told the auction audience, followed hopefully by a well-timed rimshot. The dress, acquired by Reynolds in 1971 when 20th Century Fox sold off all of Marilyn’s wardrobe, was expected to sell for $2 million.

The actress amassed some 3500 items over those four decades in an effort to preserve the luster of Hollywood’s Golden Age. However, failing to find a museum ready to take the collection as a whole and driven into debt by its upkeep, Debs sold over 600 of the collection’s effects off this weekend during a 12-hour auction.

Among other items sold:  the red sequined gown and feather headdress Marilyn wore in 1953′s Gentlemen Prefer Blondes for $1.47 million; Elizabeth Taylor‘s riding clothes from 1944′s National Velvet for $73,800; Charlie Chaplin‘s bowler hat from the “Little Tramp” films for $135,300; Gary Cooper‘s uniform from 1941′s Seargent York for $67,650; Grace Kelly‘s dress from 1955′s To Catch a Thief for $450,000; Judy Garland‘s dress and ruby slippers from a screen test for 1939′s The Wizard of Oz for $1.75 million; Rudolph Valentino‘s matador outfit from 1922′s Blood and Sand for $258,000; and Audrey Hepburn‘s ascot dress from 1964′s My Fair Lady for $3.7 million. Princess Elizabeth of Geisler: Princess Jasmine, those harem pants are to die, and then I could wear that ring with the turquoise in the center and pink around the outside and it would perfectly match my ensemb!

Princess Katherine of Jurado: I would most want to be Princess Grace. A beautiful screen actress and a princess? She had the career and life every little girl dreams of. Plus, she had gorgeous style that is still relevant despite decades of change and trends. Princess Grace’s style and elegance has lasted the test of time. Who wouldn’t want to be known as a fashion icon and a princess?

PrincessTashur of Frink: I would definitely want to be Disney Princess Tiana, mainly because she was determined to pursue her dreams and motivated to do so. A lot of words sprung to mind when I saw Kate Middleton — now officially Princess Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge —  in Alexander McQueen: Stunning. Beautiful. Perfect. Breathtaking. Classic. Modern. Grace Kelly. And most importantly: Toldyaso.

Princess Kate wore Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, thus ending months of speculation as to her wedding dress and providing a wholly satisfying conclusion.

Featuring a 9-foot train, an ivory lace bodice, lace sleeves and satin skirts made with individual-cut flowers hand-worked onto ivory silk tulle, the gown was a fitting tribute to the late designer and a major moment for Burton, who may now be the front-runner for Dior.

- Mirror, mirror, on the wall. Who’s the fairest of them all. Not Kate Middleton (today’s Muse of the World is brought to you by the letter ‘K’). Prince William‘s future princess was voted the third most beautiful royal in history, behind Princess Grace (Kelly) of Monaco and Queen Rania of Jordan. But good news, she came out one place ahead of the late Princess Di. At least that’s one less shadow of Di’s she has to live in…though it’s going to be nothing but darkness for years to come. - Tom Ford may look smarmy, but not used car salesman smarmy. However, an Ontario dealer begs to differ and is using Ford’s swarthy, sultry, smarmy image to move some product with the provocative tagline: ”You know you’re not the first. But do you really care?” I can’t say that I do. Tom Ford may have been around the block a few (hundred) times, but he’s still looks good under the hood.  [Racked]

“I guess it [having style] helped more than anything else. I’m glad I grew up during the last vestige of cool, in the 1990s, when everything wasn’t blogged and on the Interwebs, when things were more on the downlow and underground.”

She’s kind of got a point about the whole underground thing, but the 90s were far from the last vestige of cool – that was the 80s. The 90s were more like the last whimper and final death of cool before the mid-90s took over and America sunk into a capitalist coma.

“I guess I am stylish, but I would rather have people come up and say ‘I really liked your performance in this or that’ than ‘I really like the way you dress.’ That irks me. Anyway, the term It girl gets used too loosely…”

So she’s irked by people respecting her fashion sense over her acting ability; meanwhile, that never hurt Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly, both beloved Oscar-winning actresses whose style is arguably more influential than their film catalog.

Then Sevigny turned her ire to Peaches Geldof:

“Today the term is used to describe, say, Peaches Geldof—a girl who doesn’t do anything but is just sort of around.The original It girl was the 1920s movie star Clara Bow; then, in the 1960s, with Edie Sedgwick and Warhol, It girls turned into socialites, ladies of leisure—people who had ‘it’ just for being ‘fabulous.’ But Edie was just a rich drug addict, and when I got called the It girl everyone thought I was that too. I looked like a junkie because it was the 1990s and grunge was the fashion. But I felt I was doing stuff, not just being a socialite.”

Oooh, snap, Geldof! Chloé Sevigny said as far as rich, fabulous drug addicts go, you’re in the same league as Paris Hilton. Buuuuuuurrrrnnn.

When asked if drugs played a part in her personal liberation, Sevigny answered thus:

“It wasn’t like I was a big druggie; it was just kind of a side thing, something that went hand in hand with me falling in with that crowd, the rejects. I don’t think I ever bought anything; it was just sort of there.”

That’s my excuse whenever I end up doing drugs. Yeah, occifer, that coke was just sort of there on my nostrils and I just inhaled. Somehow, that excuse rarely works.

1. The Golden Compass- Nicole Kidman is so killer in this movie. All of the floor length, fur-lined coats and the glamourous dresses are to die for.

 

2. Loser- So much 90s grunge, so much goth from Mena Suvari, so many motorcycle pads. We love it.

3. Once Upon A Time In Mexico- Enrique pre-mole removal days+Johnny Dep post 21 Jump Street days = good movie. This is a great good cop, bad cop flick with Spanish-infused styling.

 
4. Romeo and Juliet- The prime Leo days, the costuming for this modern-day Romeo and Juliet film is flawless. Minus the sole patch

 

5. Rear Window- This is one of my favorite films ever, detection at it’s finest, and tons of old-school glamour (Grace Kelly is a dream!). This trailer isn’t too good, check out the film for the full effect

 

6. Black Dahlia- Old school glam, total pinup style. We love Scarlett Johansson in red lipstick.

7. Gangs of New York- Leo does it again! (and how sweet is that part when all of those guys have top hats on)

8. Cruel Intentions- Ultimate country club kids, plus Sarah Michelle Geller wears a ton of sexy lingerie.

9. Sky Captain- I’m a huge fan of women being badasses. Gwenyth is still total glam and sexy while being a badass, and Angelina is just, well, being as hot as she is in every other movie.

 

10. Domino-Kiera Knightly as a bounty hunter that still wears red lipstick despite being a total badass? Win.

 

11. Hedwig and the Angry Inch- We had to include one more on this list because Hedwig has the craziest rock-tranny style ever! Not only that, the members of ‘her’ band make great rock stars (for the 80s), and then there is her little goth boyfriend.  All sorts of styles going on in this film, and all sorts of greatness
