Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are living the high life as of late, with a CFDA Award nomination and a successful brood of fashion lines under their boho belts. The sisters, notorious for their grungy, “hobo chic” style, recently dished to Style.com about their inspiration:

Ashley: That moment for us was us waking up, going to school, and not wanting anyone to take our picture. Kind of a piece of protection.

Mary Kate: For me, it was so cold, like the wind chill. How could you not put on 20 things when you’re going from Los Angeles to walking through the snow?

A: Yeah, we were California girls.

MK: I think it was probably that. And laziness.

And there you have it; the purveyors of granny chic themselves have chalked it up to a combination of being cold and lazy.

Yet the Olsens are anything but lazy, competing with the likes of Prabal Gurung and Joseph Altuzarra for the Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent at the CFDA Awards, and micromanaging ever aspect of their fashion line, The Row.

On the success of their multiple lines, including the Row,  Ashley says, “I feel like it’s been this constant slow growth but a consistent growth.” Mary-Kate adds, “all the companies run on their own.” We get it Mary-Kate, you’ve only been in forty two movies. You’re obviously incredibly lazy.

Look One: Shredded ‘n’ Leather

The Long  Tube Skirt: Mary Meyer, $94

California native cum NY transplant Mary Meyer fuses her talent for art into clothing that makes sense. Most notable for her geo-graphics and dyeing, she also has some revolutionary ideas about garment making. The construction of the skirt is what inspires me: she’s purposefully left the knit hemline unfinished so that the wearer may cut it to the desired length, no tailor required. The ground grazing-option takes effect when you place the waistline at any height. Named the AJM Skirt for Andrew J. Mukamal of Kell On Earth assistantship, Meyer was inspired by his grunge gone goth glam; long soft layers that counterpose plaid and leather.

The Shredded Top: Evil Twin, $89

“A physical copy of one’s self whom has altered morality” is the definition of this Australian brand’s namesake. I gather that this Evil Twin‘s twin shirt would not have holes, nor spaced fringe, nor a marble tie dye, all of which sneakily camouflage my exposed skin. With the skirt up high resting just below the bosom, I only have need for a bust long top. This holy top was born to move and shake, so if scandal isn’t your thing, throw a hot bandeau underneath as a bra, and let the hue show through. Lest you end up locked up for indecent exposure.

The Leather Jacket: Kill City, $458

With a slouch squared collar and super long sleeve lining, the relaxed rocker jacket is the ideal weight for Spring’s transition. Based in LA, Kill City is forged in that flexible weather to the sound of the rockin’ punk wail of Iggy Pop.

The Side-Laced Wedge: Madison Harding, $185 (originally $265)

Created intently for the downtown pavement pounder, these suede wedge booties ground the outfit’s transitional effect. Hilary Rosenman of Madison Ave., N.Y. and Barri Budin of Harding Dr., N.J. hauled their fashion knowledge to the East Village and began making astutely designed Madison Harding shoes.

The Hair Corset: Court, $48

Their very own hair corset comes from the Native American tradition of hair tying. They lace up like the top of a riding boot and encapsulate the pony tail. More details on this piece in the coming looks.

If you have to go to Court, this is for sure the one to go to.

#10 - NIRVANA

Kurt Cobain embodies the grunge revolution of the nineties. He synced the music to the laying low layered baggy flannel I-couldn’t-care-less look. It was an anti-fashion statement, a call to his own philosophy with reckless comfort, and thus it became fashion.

#9 – GUNS N ROSES

Of the glam metal hair bands that existed in thick of the eighties, Axel Rose and his lusciously locked bandmates were some of the most authentic in the genre. Their punk tinged solid rocker look made their shaggy manes manly. Power leather, head banging bandanas, faded shrunken graphic tees and hand cut effects complement their genuine rockstar songs.

#8 THE KILLERS

The intrinsic cool of Brandon Flowers emanates throughout The Killers. They create the kind of music that so easily sounds contrived when attempted by others, and the same goes for their look. Their polished quality with major statement, like feather shoulders or fur jackets, embodies both music and style in the best light.

#7 – OUTKAST

Big Boi keeps it hood. André 3000 blasts it into the future while tossing around a twenties vibe. He raised his waistline when no one else did and created mayhem with his look in “Hey Ya!” Their music is as smooth and superfast-paced as their appearance.

#6 – THE CLASH

As key players in the original wave of British punk, their shredded, zipped and right tight aesthetic weighed heavily in the formation of the genre. Their politically driven lyrics are backed by their F-you look and general badassery.

#5 – MGMT

This psych rock group from the here and now is a major reason that American Apparel stocked its shelves with blinding neon. Their exceptional style leads Andrew VanWyngarden and Benjamin Goldwasser to experimentation and wild inspiration. For instance, on their website a fan asks, “What inspired the fashion choice for Lolla[palooza] in Grant Park? You looked pretty hot in those jackets. (In every sense of the word.) Amazing.” Andrew’s answer? Quite amazing indeed.

#4 – LED ZEPPELIN

Gah, it’s effortless. The unbuttoned bare chested sexiness of Robert Plant is only upped by the fur collared leather trench of John Bohnam, complemented by the multi-tonal jacket on John Paul Jones and completed by Jimmy Page‘s slick tweed. Their ever present style had the same air as their music; the loudest, most soulful wails and riffs and rips always rode the chillest undercurrent.

#3 – JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE

Jimi Hendrix dressed like the psychedelic royalty he was. Purple and mind altering patterns enwrapped him as he lit guitars on fire, shredded it with his teeth, and as LSD dripped down from the scarf tied around his head (allegedly). The Experience was a spectacle; heady music enhanced tenfold by the showmanship of Hendrix.

#2 – THE ROLLING STONES

The Stones are the greatest vaudeville act of all time, never ceasing. Clothing slings on their rockstar bodies with ease, as does some of the greatest rock and roll ever performed pour out of them. They started out, much like The Beatles and every early British Invasion band thereafter in straight suits and matching haircuts. With time and money they evolved into wearing spectacle-worthy designer pieces like Mick Jagger’s Prada cock feather fedora or these pants. Keith Richards sparked the eyeliner earringed look that Johnny Depp so famously adopted for Captain Jack Sparrow. Undeniable sex appeal lies as much in their music as in style of larger than life, gender bending (yet deeply masculine) cool. And they’re still at it now.

#1 – THE BEATLES

The boys who brought rock and roll to the masses went through a series of evolutions in their seven years as a band. They began clean cut and mop topped, singing sweet yet earth shaking songs of holding hands, sharing secrets, twisting and shouting above the echoing shrieks and screams of crazed fans across the globe.  Always the epitome of class, they experimented with the finest suiting in the world, and it was Pierre Cardin who introduced them to the Indian Nehru jacket. Once they receded from the touring spotlight, they blossomed further as style icons. Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour brought psychedelia to the forefront with neon military regalia, wild paisleys, beads, thin chains, moustaches and acid. Onto The White Album, which they wrote most of while practicing transcendental meditation in an ashram, they developed further spiritually and grew into newer versions of themselves. John Lennon was looking more like Jesus every day, and solidifying his round spectacle staple. Paul McCartney kept charmingly classy, now paring back the brights. George Harrison grew ever more spiritual, keeping a relaxed finery about him. Ringo was actually the most fashionably daring of the four, hamming up the giant rings and divinely accessorizing. The Beatles were indisputable trendsetters as their image and sound transformed through time, transforming the world around them.

LINK LOVE: Opening Ceremony

As the show progressed, the collections punk theme became more apparent with distressed patterns, ripped stockings and a smattering of sequins. For spring, designer Christophe Decarnin presented a unique blend of anarchy and party glamour.

As a total 90′s kid growing up listening to No Doubt and watching Gwen’s hair change with her every mood was pure awesomness,  we all know we loved her “kicking down doors” attitude and 20′s housewife inspired hair twists.

VAMPIRE WEEKEND- Total prepsters, how could they not be after all they did attend Columbia University. Button ups, cardigans, oxfords, scruff, and scarves.

THE STROKES- Only the best thing to ever hit your cute little ears! Last Night, Is This it, Someday, just makes you want to party your youth away. These guys are somewhat on the grungy side, and probably the only guys to make jean jackets look as good as they do on a male.

FRANZ FERDINAND-  Oxfords, blazzer jackets, ties, and button up shirts, some what British looking?… how would you not want one of these boys by your side.

THE CURE- Maybe their style is a bit on the scary side, but just like their sweet tunes, I dig the all black, serious stares, huge Doc Marten looking boots, and messy hair.

In 1992, when everyone had a Cranberries CD in their Discman and holes in their jeans, grunge ruled.  This is also the year  Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous, Say Anything) brought us Singles.

The film focuses on a group of 20-somethings  living in a Melrose Place-esque apartment complex in Seattle. My favorites are  Janet (Bridget Fonda), a coffee shop barista who’s smitten with her rocker boyfriend Cliff (Matt Dillon), the lead singer of Citizen Dick.

  Maybe Cliff pretends that he’s just not that into Janet, and he’s  bummed out that his band isn’t getting the attention he craves. Janet worries her boobs aren’t big enough for her aloof boyfriend, and considers plastic surgery to win back his affections. The movie also features a great soundtrack, with early-90′s tracks from Pearl Jam and Mudhoney.

Besides the music and realistically-portrayed romance, Singles offers an eyeful of great fashion. Janet dons outfits that are on-trend today: black tights, Doc Marten boots, floral dresses, and bowler hats. Cliff sports an Edie Sedgwick tee, ripped jeans and a guitar. 

From the dating dilemmas that really hit home to the fashion inspiration, Singles is a cult classic that is just as relevant today as it was 18 years ago.

Peaches Geldof talks about her “fashion icon” status and her distaste for sexy dressing:

The May editorial from Who What Wear featured a flashback to to the OG Beverly Hills 90210 style. The ’90’s grunge style has been back for a while, and these girls bring you ’90s nerdy, sexy, and casual chic.
