RUNWAY RUNDOWN: L.A.M.B Spring/Summer 2010 fashion

Gwen Stefani created a super fun and wearable collection for L.A.M.B this Fashion Week. Each model had Gwen-like hair that played up the edge of this collection, with great zipper and stud detailing. I was impressed to see a variety of bright colors in this collection..can’t wait to see it hit stores. See the rest of the show on Cult

THE TEN: Best Celebrity Clothing Lines

Celebrity clothing lines are a dime a dozen nowadays, having become so unreasonably commonplace that it might be safe to say you’re not a real star unless you manage to churn out one (though you couldn’t even dress yourself without the help of a professional). I’ll be the first to say leave it the ones who know what they’re doing, but I will also say that there have been a few, very few that not only have managed to stay relevant as far as fashion is concerned, but exemplifies the true spirit of design: originality, creativity and quality–a rarity amongst the famous. Here are the exceptions:

THE TEN: Best Celebrity Clothing Lines fashion

1. Elizabeth and James by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen- because they don’t try so hard.

-8

2. L.A.M.B by Gwen Stefani- the shoes are beyond dope.

-9

3. J.Lo, Sweetface by Jennifer Lopez- even though Sweetface went belly up, she’s the one that started it all, and don’t act like you’ve never owned (or wanted to own) at least one pair of her jeans or one of those ghetto fabulous velour sweatsuits. Guilty.

THE TEN: Best Celebrity Clothing Lines fashion

4. Kate Moss for Topshop- a fashionista’s wet dream

-4

5. House of Harlow by Nicole Richie- hate the girl, love the jewelry.

-1

6. Benjamin Bixby by Andre 3000- gettin his grown man on.

-5

7. Twenty8Twelve by Sienna Miller- Does she still qualify as a celebrity? Nonetheless spring/summer 09 is looking pretty good…

-2

8. Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony- hipster chic at its finest.

-6

9. The Victoria Beckham Collection- this shameless clotheshorse knows her shit.

-7

10. William Rast by Justin Timberlake- I think we were all surprised that this didn’t turn out as bad as we had assumed.

MAG HAG: Gwen Stefani for ELLE, July 2009

MAG HAG: Gwen Stefani for ELLE, July 2009 fashion

Just in time for No Doubt’s comeback tour, Gwen Stefani covers the July 2009 issue of ELLE.

Her Louis Vuitton Fall 2009 outfit doesn’t go so well with the silver text. But I’m sure Gwen got styled wonderfully for her spread, in which she wears looks from Alexander McQueen, Rodarte, and Marc Jacobs.

FIRST LOOK: L.A.M.B. Fall 2009

Andy Wass May 14 at 3:20 | Comments

FIRST LOOK: L.A.M.B. Fall 2009 fashion

It’s hard to believe that L.A.M.B., Gwen Stefani’s line with her stylist, Andrea Lieberman, and designer Zaldy Gogo,  is in its fifth year already.

But it’s still going strong, dressing Gwen for tours and music videos, and outfitting fans with clothes and accessories.   And staying true to form, L.A.M.B’s Fall/Winter 2009/2010 is unabashedly Vivienne Westwood-inspired, and in line with Gwen’s off-stage image.

Full of leather, plaid, fitted jackets, and oversize collars, the collection has just enough of a rock n roll flavor to keep it from being costumey.

BEAUTY SPARK: Winged Eyeliner

BEAUTY SPARK: Winged Eyeliner fashion

Not many of the Hollywood “It” girls can pull off this look, but Kate Moss, Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Angelina and Nicole Richie have all mastered the bad girl Winged Eyeliner. This is one makeup technique that just does not go out of style. Whether this look is messy or carefully executed it is always-GLAM ROCK.BEAUTY SPARK: Winged Eyeliner fashion

BEAUTY SPARK: Winged Eyeliner fashion

BEAUTY SPARK: Winged Eyeliner fashion

The Winged Eyeliner look or cat eye which is what many girls call it, seems very hard to get right. So what’s the trick or should I say the tip to get this bad girl look?

You have to have a slant eyeliner brush, liquid liner shaped like a calligraphy pen or my favorite cream/gel eyeliner. The line should start as thin as possible on an angle and grow thicker toward the outer corner of your natural curve of your eye. I suggest taking the “wings” up to a few centimeters.

Another tip, but I can’t take credit for this one, is to trace a business card or an old credit card and angle your wings to match up. Makeup Artist Kathy Jeung likes to use this step when working with Gwen Stefani.

Just have a steady hand and practice, practice, practice. Try it out and let me know if it works for you.

Has the Fashion Industry Trained Me to be a Bad Feminist?

Has the Fashion Industry Trained Me to be a Bad Feminist? fashion

The recent Jezebel article asks the question, “Why won’t sexist advertising go away?” Some very strong points are made, and I agree that women are 10 times more likely to be the subjects of sexually charged advertisements. But the view I kept questioning myself on as I looked at these photos was this- why do four of these five advertisements not phase me one bit?Has the Fashion Industry Trained Me to be a Bad Feminist? fashion

As my 4.5 years of fashion/journalism school come to a close this week, I can’t help but wonder if the industry I’ve been trained in has made me numb to provocative advertising. Working in the world of fashion, many times it’s difficult to look past the art value in something to the political argument. In the L.A.M.B. fragrance ad, for example, I don’t see a cum shot, I see perfume. Gwen Stefani has been breaking media boundaries for years now, showing up at red carpet events with pink hair and a bare midriff. Especially for a young, edgy brand like L.A.M.B, an ad like this comes across to me as playful and fun, not demoralizing.

Has the Fashion Industry Trained Me to be a Bad Feminist? fashion

I can see why many women would take offense to the Dolce & Gabbana ad. Yes, the female model in the photo is being held down by a male. Is it bad I find this sexy? For decades, Dolce & Gabbana has produced sexually charged campaigns to reflect its brand and design philosophy. Maybe it’s a cultural barrier between America and Italy as the latter’s culture is more open sexually. Nudity is common in magazine spreads and advertisements, so no one blinks an eye. To be completely honest, when I saw this ad, my thoughts went directly to how the garments and accessories were portrayed rather than what the models were doing.

Has the Fashion Industry Trained Me to be a Bad Feminist? fashion

The Remy Martin ad is interesting to me because it’s two women acting in a playfully sexual manner towards each other. I have to laugh because does anyone look at this photo and assume these women are lesbians? Probably not. If it were two men, however, most people would be quick to assume they were gay. It’s a very strange, long-running stereotype that straight women can act sexually towards each other, but straight men can’t.

Has the Fashion Industry Trained Me to be a Bad Feminist? fashion

The Nikon ad shocked me. I can’t believe they are actually running this. First off, the models need a sandwich, or six, stat. Secondly, I am so sick of seeing young women, in real life or the media world, posing half naked for some douche just because he has a camera. I missed the memo awhile back telling me I could become famous by modeling for an amateur photographer who has a trendy Web site.

Has the Fashion Industry Trained Me to be a Bad Feminist? fashion

And the BMW ad makes no sense to me visually. I wouldn’t even look twice if I saw it in a magazine. Fail.

Am I a bad feminist for looking at the art of fashion many times instead of the social taboo? I don’t know if there’s a right answer. But my attraction to provocative fashion advertising tells me it has something to do with the industry I work in. And I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing.

Suri May Be Forbes’ Number One, But Kingston Gets My Numero Uno

Suri May Be Forbes Number One, But Kingston Gets My Numero Uno fashion

First and foremost, sorry for the image being blurry, I had to blow the image up huge so you could see this guy. So anyway, Kingston Stefani is by far my favorite little kid in the world. His mom and dad are pretty stylish people, and that definitely reflects in little Kingston. Sure these are probably his pajamas, but those little legging/sweatpants he has on are so cute with his Uggs (note: Uggs are only acceptable in the confines of one’s home, or on the feet of cute children).

Not to mention, could he look any cuter riding on top on the luggage on the little airport carts? Kingston gets my vote for coolest/cutest kid in America. Sorry Suri Cruise, but if I had to pick between you and Kingston, you’d be half way to adoption by now! Can’t wait to watch Zuma grow up too!

Thanks to Just Jared for the original image. Sorry I had to crop it and stuff.

First Look: The Harajuku Lovers Thanksgiving Float fashion

Ever since Gwen Stefani launched her set of five “Harajuku Lovers” fragrances earlier this summer, the faces of her and her four back-up dancers have been everywhere from magazines to special booths on the first floor of Macy’s. Well, come the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, they’ll be out in full-force, with the dancers gyrating to Gwen’s music atop their very own “Tokyo Lights” float.

The float itself was created by the Macy’s team and approved by Gwen, her people, and Coty. Hand-painted by the Macy’s float crew, it’s topped off with platforms for the dancers themselves—Baby, Love, Music, and Lil Angel. Should you chance the cold of Thanksgiving morning to see the parade yourself, watch out for this float as there will be street teams dressed in the HL theme handing out samples and cards for gifts with purchase or a chance at a grand prize.

Well, This Is One Way to Advertise…

Well, This Is One Way to Advertise... fashionYou could easily say that the HP Computer commercials are the best ones on the tube these days (Okay…so maybe the Gieco and Disney vacation package commercials are better, but work with me). I loved the creative and inspirational (yes, inspirational) commercials showcasing Vera Wang and Gewn Stefani, but Fergie just isn’t doing it for me. As opposed to past HP commercials, which typically warm the heart and tell you that all your dreams are possible with an HP Computer, Fergie simply talks about herself, her music and advertises for her new shoe collections. It might be HP’s commercial, but it looks like Fergie is doing a little advertising of her own.

No matter how much I hate her commercial, I can’t hate this pop star…afterall, she did teach me how to spell.

Thanks Just Jared!

Her vibrant colored hair, bikini tops and bindis inspired me to develop my own style in a sea of cookie cutter 13-year-old girls. I never walked around my suburban neighborhood donning garb quite as wacky as Gwen’s, but she was a huge inspiration for thinking outside of the box. I’ve always looked up to her, from the punk days to her classy street style of today. Thank you, Gwen Stefani, for never disappointing me.

The celebrities are starting to have their Halloween parties — I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot of lame costumes over the next week, but I think Gwen Stefani could almost pull off her sunny-side-up egg  as a regular dress.
