Waris Teaches Haider Ackermann & Tilda Swinton How To Dye in Paradise

On the luscious Thai island of Yao Noi, the House of Waris Batik Lab held its first session. When the elite guests of the Film on the Rocks film festival weren’t viewing flicks on the floating movie theater, Waris Ahluwalia gave them the opportunity to learn the ancient wax dyeing technique, Batik. Waris (a jewelry designer and occasional actor) arranged for a group of local artisan women to demonstrate the process, in celebration of his batik scarf collection hitting stores now. The final result will be revealed at a gala in Bangkok, with proceeds going a film-centric children’s charity. Come be a Thai fly on the wall at Waris’s brilliant meeting and enhancing of the minds.

Haider Ackermann and Tilda Swinton learn and lend a hand to the Thai Film Foundation, which Foundation to facilitate film workshops for children in villages of Yao Noi. The workshops will continue to focus on the youth of the island and teach them not only the history of cinema but also script writing, directing, shooting, acting and editing their own films.

"Batikers" included Haider Ackerman, Sandro Kopp, Ryan McGinley, Tilda Swinton, Andre Saraiva, Chloe Sevigny, Simon Fisher Turner, Chomwan Weeraworawit and Christopher Bollen.

Spring/Summer 2009 brought back King Tut from his tomb and slapped him directly on the runways of New York Fashion Week. Several designers reincarnated the draping, wrapping and ruching with a modern twist. While this trend is very similar to inspiration from ancient Greek fashion, careful not confuse it…Zeus wouldn’t be caught a day in his immortal life wearing gauzy strips or pleated sleeves.

I know the thermometers have just dropped and spring seems several snow and ice storms away, but keep the mummy look in the back of your mind until you can “unwrap” it in March!
