Thanks to the beauty geniuses behind Marie Claire Magazine, we can now have a go to doctor for all things beauty. So, clearly most women refuse to give up the heat, torture, and damage that we purposely put our hair through on a daily. So I say if you can’t drop the tools, might as well just treat your hair to a nice remedy every now and there. Here are 4 DIY remedies, that consist of mostly everything you have in your kitchen.

1. Feed Your Head
“You can’t have full, bouncy hair without a healthy scalp,” says Goddard-Clark. To reduce excess oil, dampen a cotton ball with witch hazel, dab it along your hairline and part, and rinse hair with cool water. Fight flakes weekly by adding five drops of tea-tree oil to your favorite shampoo as a booster. Skip conditioner, though, and apply a detangler only to the ends of your hair — your scalp may be sensitive after this treatment.

2. Add Volume
Lifeless strands got you down? in a bowl, mix one egg yolk, a half cup of honey, two tablespoons of olive oil, and two small, ripe avocados. Apply the concoction to the entire head and leave on for one to two hours, until hard. Shampoo and condition as usual. “This is a miracle cure,” notes Goddard-Clark. “And for extra-bouncy, nonfrizzy curls, Drew Barrymore taught me to blot ringlets dry with paper towels.”

3. Boost Shine
“Dull, overstyled hair benefits from regular olive- or jojoba-oil masks,” explains Goddard-Clark. Starting at the roots, brush a quarter cup of natural oil (synthetic oils don’t work as well) through dry hair and leave it on for an hour. Blast the ends with a dryer for five minutes to help oil penetrate deeper. Skip the roots — the scalp emits enough warmth on its own, and applying extra heat could lead to greasy textures later.

4. Preserve Color
Minerals in the water system can cause brassiness for blondes and redheads. A quick fix? Mix a quarter cup of distilled white vinegar with a half cup of filtered water and pour it over hair before rinsing with cool water. Graying brunette beauties need to be careful, too. “Peroxide-based dyes give darker shades a reddish hue,” warns Goddard-Clark. Use a toothbrush to paint boxed dye over individual strands.

With all types of tools and products flying around like hair irons and dye, it’s difficult to to prevent your locks from becoming dry, rough and tangled. But if man-made curls and highlights are just too unbearable to live without, Milbon has the remedy. Neu Due is a three-step process designed to improve hair texture without altering your precious color. Leave-in treatment Aprou is a moisturizer for your hair, important as age takes its toll and hair begins to dry-out. To learn more about these amazing new products and test them firsthand, I stopped by the Milbon Personal Haircare Consultation Bar. After a quick and painless hair texture analysis, these are the products I walked away with and how they have transformed my hair.

After analyzing my hair, a Milbon expert determined it was texturally medium and a little dry at the ends. The Willowluxe three step system was recommended to me, and I’ve used the products over the course of a week. Here is what I thought.

Step 1, Shampoo: Not only does this shampoo smell amazing, but it makes your hair feel unbelievably clean. It works when amino acids in the formula fill the damage holes in your hair strands. After using, my hair was softer, shinier and less frizzy.

Step 2, Treatment: This everyday conditioner is the richest I’ve ever used, housed in the most gorgeous packaging. It works when lipidure attaches to amino receptors to deliver moisture inside your hair. When you blow dry, the lipidure changes its form to coat hair. After drying my hair, it felt and looked softer than it did when I used other conditioners.

Step 3, Nutrient: Even richer and more moisturizing than the everyday conditioner, this ultra-luxe treatment is to be used once a week in place of normal conditioner. It works in the same way as the treatment but overtime. This feels and smells amazing. After leaving it in my hair for three minutes, by hair literally felt like silk.

In addition to the three-step Willowluxe treatment, I was given an Aprou leave-in treatment. Perfect for delivering the moisture my hair most desperately needs, I used Water Gel on my towel-dried hair along with curl mousse before blow drying. Unlike a lot of other creams, this is not sticky and super easy to spread on your hair. After using, my hair looked smoother and less frizzy. It’s great for use on dry hair too if you need a quick touch-up.

So not sure if you remember, but last year around this same time I decided to go to the salon and give my hair a little makeover. (here’s the post I wrote on this) I went from black to a honey brown tone. Well…. after a couple of months with the new lighter shade, I decided to go back to the salon and dye my hair dark brown, problem was, that after about 3 hair washes later, the light brown kept coming back. At times it would even come back looking a bit orange (not cute!) I tried this several times (I waited about 3 months in between hair dyes) and even went to different salons, but had the same problem. I finally decided to just buy one of these at-home hair dyes. I bought this one at Target from Garnier Nutrisse, it was about $7. I bought two boxes, since my hair is pretty long, but ended up only using one box. My mom also told me about another Garnier hair dye that only takes 10 minutes, but they didn’t have it when I went to the store. This was only the second time I had tried dying my hair at home, and it was pretty simple. I do have to say that the smell is a bit strong… I had to open up my bathroom window. So make sure you do it in a well ventilated area.

I went with the “Soft Black 20″ shade and it did a really good job at covering up all the light brown tones in my hair. It was actually a bit toooooo dark, so if you’re looking to go black, but not too dark I would suggest maybe going with a dark brown shade instead. Good news is, that after more than 4 washes later there are no signs of the brown shades coming back. Let’s hope it stays this way. Oh, and it probably took about 3 washes to get the hair dye smell out. My hubby though is wishing that the light hair comes back since he personally likes the lighter hair on me… What is it with men and lighter hair, ugh! don’t you guys know it’s a lot of work to maintain. Anywho, I am kinda diggin’ the natural look and will probably keep it around for a while.

Ps. Here is a picture I posted a couple of days ago where you can see the new hair color.

Introducing the industry’s first and only 100% plant based permanent hair dye, ACT (Advanced Cosmetic Technologies) uses breakthrough technology and super-pure botanical extracts to make natural products that are as effective as many over-the-counter brands, and comes in 13 rich colors.

ACT’s vegan-friendly, two-part liquid color system uses renewable and sustainable plant dyes that gently bond to hair without altering hair’s natural pH balance, conditioning while coloring. Planet-friendly from packaging to ingredients, ACT’s carton and insert materials are made from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper and 80% post-consumer waste. The packaging is printed with soy-based inks using energy generated by wind power. In addition, the products are also cruelty-free, with absolutely no testing on animals.

Available at select Whole Foods and online through www.actnaturals.com.
