Hailing from that foreign land known as New Jersey, but a New Yorker most of her life, photographer Gail Hadani is inspired by the drama of opera and the romance of fine art. No wonder since she was proficient at both before ever picking up her camera. Deemed a child painting prodigy, Hadani later moved onto the operatic stage where she performed all the greats — Mozart, Puccini, Verdi. Once she retired her scales, she began incorporating photography into her love of the brushstroke and since then her work has appeared in Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan and Zink among others. Hearst Magazines Bringing $10M Worth of TV Shows to YouTube

On April 15, Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar and Marie Claire will make their viral video debut on Hearst Magazine‘s new YouTube channel, Hello Style.

The channel is part of YouTube’s $100 million initiative to produce higher quality content in conjunction with other media companies in an effort to attract bigger and better advertisers who might not be so enamored with videos of dogs doing the darnest things and tweens sincerely singing Adele off-key into their computer screens .

YouTube provided Hearst with $10 million to start-up the channel, but the publisher will determine the content, which will be more plot-oriented than past online media and inspired by its magazine’s print features. So you can look forward to (?) video versions of Cosmo‘s “Sexy vs. Skanky” and Marie Claire‘s “Big Girl in a Skinny World.”

Seriously. Hello BadIdea.

Hearst is also launching a Car and Driver channel on May 1 to appeal to its man magazine demographic that will feature a mix of service and reality shows such as Driver Rehab and Battle of the Beaters. The latter, to my chagrin, is not about the joys of self-service but about two auto body shops competing to fix up old cars.

16 British Fashion Designers & Contemporary Artists Collaborate

A tight pack of British fashion designers and contemporary artists have paired off at the British Fashion Council’s discretion, to create eight installations for the London 2012 Festival. Backed by the BFC and Bazaar Fashion Arts Foundation, the event is set to raise funds for art and design scholarships. There are 16 creative minds already at work on the projects: Giles Deacon and Jeremy Deller, Hussein Chalayan and Gavin Turk, Jonathan Saunders and Jess Flood-Paddock, Mary Katrantzou and Mark Titchner, Matthew Williamson and Mat Collishaw, Nicholas Kirkwood and Simon Periton, Paul Smith and Charming Baker, Peter Pilotto and Francis Upritchard, and Stephen Jones and Cerith Wyn Evans. Flip through the gallery to see how the pairs’ styles compare.

They have until the VIP Gala on June 27th to finish, and will then be on display at the V&A Museum July 6-29, to later go on display at Selfridges. Harper’s Bazaar UK EIC Lucy Yeomans will then pen a book to commemorate the collaboration.

INDIE REWIND: How to Wear Green on St. Patrick’s Day (without Looking Like a D-Bag)

St. Patty’s Day is tomorrow which means three things: 1.) Dave & Buster’s is going to have their busiest day of the year 2.) My own all-day drunkeness will be masked if not completely eclipsed by everyone else’s and 3.) There will be a sea of green flooding the streets…followed by a sea of vomit. Sure, the Irish have only so much to be proud of* — a potato famine and Bono, I mean, I get it — so they want to show off their pride the only way they know how: by wearing head-to-toe green and getting sloshed beyond comprehension. I’m all for that. But there are ways to wear green — even in a head to toe fashion, which, not gonna lie to ya is tricky and best left to the masters. How many ways, you ask? Let’s say 5…and discuss.

*I really have nothing against the Irish…I don’t like anyone.

A paltry $75K saphire, peridot and diamond bluet clip at Tiffany's 1. Accessorize. Sometimes subtlety goes a long way. But it never really goes long enough, so if you choose to wear a simple green pin or earrings, make them as fabulous as possible. After all, thousands of leprachauns died to make this holiday possible...that is what St. Patty's is all about right? The St. Patrick's Day Massacre of 17-whatever?

Louis Vuitton Mens SS 2011 2. Layer. March is a notoriously tricky month to dress for because it's torn between two seasons. It'll be 60 degrees one day and will snow the next -- this kooky global warming. So a good trick is layering. Bundle up for the cold morning, shed a few layers for the afternoon sun and reapply after sundown. For St. Patrick, stagger your green for when you stagger out of the nearest tavern or pub.

Shala Monroque in Harper's Bazaar 3. Mix Shades. There are as many shades of green as there are voices floating around in Charlie Sheen's head: emerald, chartreuse, turquoise, forest, hunter, neon, lime, jungle, kelly, mint...and in listing them it's clear that they all have the gayest names possible. So why not mix a little kelly with a little spring bud and top it off with a shock of marijauana. That's not technically a shade of green, but it's my favorite kind, nonetheless.

Prada's SS 2011 Ad f/ Mariacarla Boscono 4. Patterns. The more green you incorporate into your look, the more inventive you have to get. And thus, the more fun! Throw different patterns together: prints and polka dots, stripes and stars, this and that, etc. It's totally easy to O.D. on too many patterns, however, so in these situations it's best to follow Coco Chanel's simple rule: remove one item before leaving the house. And since it's St. Patty's, that item can easily be your panties. Just sayin'...makes things a lot easier come nightfall.

Scarlett O'Hara Going Green with the Wind 5. Go Big or Go Home. You know how I said how tricky it was to pull off head to toe green? Well when in doubt, fair people of Ireland (and I really mean fair -- it's like the Irish are literally allergic to the sun), look to national heroine Scarlett O'Hara. She needed to make a statement so she just took down some old curtains and sewed them into a gown (or rather, had her maid take down some old curtains and sew them into a gown). Sure, the gown bordered on bad taste but isn't that what the holidays are all about? Getting drunk, embarrassing yourself, your friends, your family and then laughing it all off so no one suspects your rampant alcohol problem? So, wear those goofy green beer glasses and those goofy green top hats and those goofy green athletic jerseys -- let your d-bag flag fly! Bad taste is a look that the Irish have been pulling off -- and pulling off better than anyone -- for centuries. Celebrate it.

Moves Like Jagger on Rolling Stones in Harper’s Bazaar

She doesn’t need to try to control you. Look into her eyes and she’ll show you the moves like Jagger. Because Georgia May Jagger inherited those moves from her legendary parents, Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall, then learned a few of her own. Writhing around on rocks off the sea, the light finds her in metallics of chains, golden thread and fish scaled paillettes. Alexi Lubomirski lensed this cover shoot for Harper’s Bazaar UK March 2012, bringing rich bronze tones from the natural jagged surroundings while Vanessa Coyle brought looks from Givenchy, Herve Leger and Salvatore Ferragamo to rock Jagger rolling on the stones.

Harper’s Bazaar’s Redesign Features a Faceless Gwyneth Paltrow

Harper’s Bazaar has had some serious work done and she is looking good. Glenda Bailey is determined that nobody put her baby in the corner and has revealed a new look for the magazine beginning with the March issue. Harper’s is now one inch larger with thicker paper, new typograhy and features — and who better to launch the makeover than Bailey’s favorite cover girl, Gwyneth Paltrow? Photographed by Terry Richardson, the striking subscriber cover features Gwyneth with her face obscured by her flowing golden locks while giving body and leg for days in a revealing dress by relatively unknown designer Anthony Vaccarello.

“It’s a very daring thing to do, where you don’t immediately see her face.” Bailey told WWD, adding for good measure, “As you know, I was the first to develop this two-cover approach.” Let ‘em know Glen.

While still fourth among fashion pubs in ad pages, the March issue saw a 15.5% increase with new advertisers including Tom Ford, Hervé Léger and Alberta Ferretti. Between those ads you’ll notice new features such as “The List” — “the ultimate list of things to be aware of this month,” according to Bailey — a monthly travel column called “The Escape,” an expanded beauty section, more news and Derek Blasberg‘s previously online only “Best-Dressed List” makes its way to a monthly column.

Vogue Still Number 1 in Ad Pages, but W Is the Fastest Growing Pub

Anna Wintour is still effing shutting it down. 300 years into her tenure as editrix-in-chic of Vogue, the fashion’s unofficial bible retains its top slot with ad pages for its March spring fashion issue — the lesser man’s September issue — totaling 442.74. You see that .74? That’s called putting in work, kids. It’s also called Kohl’s ads alongside Louis Vuitton, but such is the (reduced) price of success.

The major fashion titles were generally up in advertising from last year with W posting the greatest gain at 25% or 41 pages — though at a total of 204 pages, it is still only fifth in the rankings. InStyle had its biggest ad count since stomping onto the newsstand 18 years ago with 344 pages — a 13 % (39 pages) increase — bringing it in at number 2. And this is how the rest of the list shakes out:

1. Vogue — 442.74 pages, up 3.7%

2. InStyle — 344 pages, up 13% (39 pages)

3. Elle — 319 pages, up 2% (6 psges)

4. Harper’s Bazaar — 271 pages, up 16% (37 pages)

5. W — 204 pages, up 25% (41 pages)

Meanwhile, what really matters in this story is that the March issue of Vogue will feature one Ms. Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, which — just saying — will be a marked improvement from the current Grammy gal gracing the February issue.

Demi Moore Opens Up About Ashton, Being “Too Thin” and the Jersey Shore

Demi Moore sat down with longtime gal pal Amanda de Cadenet for her first interview after splitting with noted douchebag and ex-Twitterer, Ashton Kutcher in February’s Harper’s Bazaar. Moore and de Cadenet’s new show on Lifetime, The Conversation, is all about sisters doing it for themselves and then talking about it. Smelling an opportunity for a little promo-pro-bono, they took to Harper’s to converse on the things women love to converse about: namely body image, eating, relationships and eating again. Turns out even Demi Moore has insecurities that she can’t nip, tuck, lift or hire Rachel Zoe to conceal away.

On body image:

I think I sit today in a place of greater acceptance of my body, and that includes not just my weight but all of the things that come with your changing body as you age to now experiencing my body as extremely thin — thin in a way that I never imagined somebody would be saying to me, “You’re too thin, and you don’t look good.”

On her guilty pleasure:

Watching Jersey Shore, because it’s such a train wreck. It’s excessive behavior being rewarded, which in truth is painful to watch, but you just can’t look away!

On being “abandoned”:

I used to think that what scared me was the idea of being abandoned until someone said to me, “Only children can be abandoned. Adults can’t be abandoned because we have a choice. Children don’t have a choice.” So I started to rethink. “Okay, it’s not that. What’s the underlying thread that really scares me?” I think what scares me is not having the courage to reach my full potential…If I were to answer it just kind of bold-faced, I would say what scares me is that I’m going to ultimately find out at the end of my life that I’m really not lovable, that I’m not worthy of being loved. That there’s something fundamentally wrong with me.

On her idea of freedom:

Letting go of the outcome. Truly being in the moment. Not reflecting on the past. Not projecting into the future. That’s freedom. Not caring more about what other people think than what you think. That’s freedom…Somebody wrote something to me that said, “Don’t let your wounds make you become someone you’re not.” That’s really powerful. And not taking life too seriously.

The Ladies Who Hunch: The Best and Worst Selling Cover Girls (and Boys) of the Year

Some gals got it and some gals would sell their first born just to get it — that “je ne sais quoi”, that “It” factor that makes men want them, women want to be them, and magazine editors want to put them on their covers. But even with that hard-to-categorize quality, the magic can fall short. Some gals can sell a magazine and some gals should stick to their day jobs, starring in movies, recording dance-pop hits and whoring their lives out on basic cable. Assembled here are the biggest winners and losers of the Great Magazine Cover War of 2011.

Link Love: WWD

Winner: Sarah Jessica Parker Her January Elle, August Vogue, and September Marie Claire covers are the 2nd or 3rd bestsellers of each mag this year.

Loser: Justin Bieber His Vanity Fair cover is the lowest selling issue since Graydon Carter took over in 1992. Rolling Stone, Teen Vogue and People similarly bombed.

Winner: Lady Gaga Mother Monster's Vogue cover was Anna Wintour's second best-selling issue, while her March Harper's Bazaar is Glenda Bailey's third top performer.

Loser: Lady Gaga However, no one wants to see a pared-down, bare-faced Gaga and the October issue of Bazaar is its third worst performer.

Winner: Mila Kunis A breakout year for the actress delivered GQ's biggest-selling issue from August and a 15% increase for a struggling W with her March cover. A turn on Cosmopolitan and a shared cover with Justin Timberlake on Elle in August also proved to be hits.

Loser: Justin Timberlake JT's cover with Mila might have been a hit for Elle, but his W cover with Amanda Seyfried was the mag's 2nd worst seller, while his solo cover for Esquire in October was its worst seller of the year.

Winner: Jennifer Aniston Alleged sexiest woman of all time, Aniston was also Marie Claire's top seller of the year and her November Elle is on track to be one of its biggest hits.

Loser: Michelle Williams The My Week with Marilyn star's Vogue cover and her Marie Claire cover were each mag's second and third worst-performing covers, respectively.

Winner: Kim Kardashian Kim delivered Glamour's bestseller of the year with her February cover, but a lot happened between then and now...

Loser: The Kardashians While Kim's Harper's Bazaar, Self and Lucky covers were mild hits, the January 2012 issue of Glamour featuring sisters Khloe and Kourtney is on track to bomb Bieber-style.

Patrick Melville’s Top 5 Holiday Hairstyles

FashionIndie‘s sassbot intern one Ms. Jorge Bello interviewed celebrity hair stylist Patrick Melville for our sister site, Lookbooks.com. Melville’s credentials are numerous and he offers five holiday hairstyles to greet the season.

Do you know who invented Rihanna’s iconic haircut, “The Firefly”? Patrick Melville, renowned specialist in high fashion chic and red carpet glamour, did. This really comes as no surprise if one considers his track record. Patrick got his training in London while working for British Vogue and, from there, he went on to have his work immortalized by the lenses of Patrick Demarchelier, Gilles Bensimon, and Kurt Marcus (among others) for the pages of W, Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, and many more. Success is a stressful thing, but instead of taking a spa-cation, in 2007 Patrick opened The Patrick Melville Salon and Spa at The Sports Club/LA, the internationally reputed sports and fitness complex at Rockefeller Center. 1. Asymmetrical chignon Blow-dry hair out with large round brush to create a soft and loose texture. Use a ponytail holder and pull hair back into a low ponytail on the side of the nape of the neck. Take a tail comb and tease the ponytail lightly from root to end to create a messy, loose texture. Using a Mason Pearson brush, brush the top of the pony to smooth out the hair, twist it into a chignon, and secure with bobby pins. This is a quick and easy way to go from the office to a holiday party.

2. Very slick high ponytail Blow hair out smooth and straight. Take a ponytail holder and a Mason Pearson brush and flip hair upside down. Holding your head upside down, brush the hair straight into a high ponytail. Secure with the ponytail holder. Spray any loose ends with a light hairspray to get rid of the fly-aways. To hide the ponytail holder, take a piece of hair from underneath of the ponytail and wrap it around the elastic. Secure with a bobby pin underneath. This will complete the look. It's very easy to accomplish and looks great with any outfit.

3. Disheveled French twist Blow hair out straight. Spray the roots with a lightweight hairspray. Take a tail comb and divide hair into one-inch sections. Tease at the root throughout to create lift. Using your fingers, break up the hair to create a disheveled look. Pull the hair back and twist it into a French twist. Secure with long, straight pins. This look is supposed to be worn loose, and not too structured. Works great with any hair type or any length of hair.

4. The Brigitte Bardot This is a very sexy look. Spray hair with lightweight hairspray. Take 1-inch sections throughout the whole head and wrap around a 1-inch curling iron from root to end to create spiraling curls. Once that is complete, take a tail comb and tease at root. Break up the hair with your fingers. Take some straight pins and pull hair back at the front and secure at the crown. This will give a little lift at the crown. Then pull soft wispy pieces around the face to create the sexy soft look. Smooth the top area of the hair lightly to hide any teasing that might be visible and then spray with light hairspray. Brigitte is a timeless sex symbol and this is a very flattering style for any woman.

5. Short hair If you have short hair, and if you're looking to pump up the look for the evening, there are two things you will need. One is craft clay or pomade and the other is dry shampoo. To create the texturized, soft, sexy look, spray at the root with dry shampoo. In the palm of your hand, take a dab of pomade and rub your hands together to break down the product. Apply the product evenly throughout the hair to create a loose texture. You can wear the hair completely swept back off the face or bring pieces in to create chunky texture. Jewelry can be used in the hair to give it more of a holiday glam look. I think you'll see a lot of bling in the hair over the holiday season.

A. I love Dover Street in London, Colette in Paris and 10 Corso Como in Milan.

Q. Who is the best designer for a travel wardrobe?

A. I have to say Lanvin – Alber’s clothes are comfortable, elegant and the fabrics travel extremely well.

Q. What is your favorite travel destination?

A. I don’t have a favorite destination, but I am always looking forward to the next trip.

To celebrate a milestone 10th anniversary with its November issue, Harper’s Bazaar Singapore channeled the art of cinema for the dramatic and colorful spread “Celluloid Couture.” Starring Inna P, wearing the likes of Prada, Mary Katrantzou, Marc Jacobs and Diane von Furstenberg, donned a yellow wig and bright blue eyeshadow for Gan‘s lens. Kenneth Goh did the honors of styling Inna as she prepared for her close-up in Singapore’s own Chinatown neighborhood.

Madonna Vogues for Harper’s Bazaar

We haven’t had a good Madonna cover story in a while, but then again the Material Diva has been too busy getting sued, adopting kids, making critically-lambasted movies, robbing cradles and smelling up the joint to pay attention to her newsstand following. But truth be told, Madge is one of the best editorial gals in the business — be it model, actress, singer, or what-have-you. Just take a look at her epic portfolios with Steven Klein for W. For Harper’s Bazaar‘s December issue, Tom Munro captures the icon with her W.E. leading lady, Andrea Riseborough, with styling from Arianne Phillips.

“The other day, I was out on the street with Lourdes. She wasn’t feeling well and had a fever. She was wearing her tracksuit bottoms and her T-shirt, and she turned around and was like, ‘Ugh, there’s a paparazzi, and I look like shit!’ I felt for her because, you know, I thought, this is an extra layer. It’s already a challenge to have a teenager, then to have a teenager in New York City, and on top of that, she’s the daughter of someone famous. It’s a lot. I’m aware of it, and I constantly find myself apologizing for it. But it also provokes many discussions with us about what’s real and what isn’t real.”

“I think that the world is not comfortable with female sexuality. It’s always coming from a male point of view, and a woman is being objectified by a man — and even women are comfortable with that. But when a woman does it, ironically, women are uncomfortable with it. I think a lot of that has to do with conditioning…When women are perceived as powerful and doing something they aren’t supposed to be doing, they are often portrayed as sexual predators.”

“For some reason, I feel like I never left high school, because I still feel that if you don’t fit in, you’re going to get your ass kicked,” she says. “That hasn’t really changed for me. I’ve always been acutely aware of differences and the way you are supposed to act if you want to be popular.”

“I find whenever someone writes anything about me, my age is right after my name[," says Madonna, 252]. “It’s almost like they’re saying, ‘Here she is, but remember she’s this age, so she’s not that relevant anymore.’ Or ‘Let’s punish her by reminding her and everyone else.’ When you put someone’s age down, you’re limiting them.”

International Fashion Weeks: Waste of Time or Next Frontier?

“Glenda Bailey‘s not going to go to Richmond, VA, fashion week.” This quote from CFDA CEO Steven Kolb basically sums up the fashion industry’s attitude when it comes to fashion weeks outside of the big four: New York, London, Paris and Milan. Fashion is elitist, with the haves being vastly outweighed by the have-nots. A small cadre of editors, designers, photographers, stylists and — most importantly — businessmen control this billion dollar industry, but the cracks are beginning to appear in the facade. Milan’s breaking rank and challenging the fashion week calendar and in response Condé Nast has vowed that no Vogue editors will be in attendance should Milan continue its catwalk of impertinence. China is outspending both America and Europe in the luxury sector and many brands are opening stores in the Far East to meet this ever-expanding market. Then there are the some 100 other fashion weeks around the world, showcasing local young, up-and-coming and often, rather talented designers who, while not garnering the attention of Harper’s Bazaar‘s esteemed editrix in chief, are contributing to their own cities’ and countries’ burgeoning fashion industries.

Karachi Fashion Week

One must also consider the undeniable impact of the internet and blogs, bringing the latest and greatest in fashion to anyone with a decent internet connection. Now a teenager in Ohio can gasp at the fantastical creations from Beijing Fashion Week as a blogger in Thailand livestreams the latest Marc Jacobs runway show. But with this democratization of the fashion industry comes its inevitable oversaturation. “Every other city is doing a fashion week. I think there can be only one market in the U.S., and that’s New York,” Kolb opines. So fashion weeks in Moscow, Karachi, Berlin, Zurich, Huston, Dubai, Portland, Rochester, Islamabad and Tel Aviv won’t garner the kind of respect or attention paid to London and Paris; clothes from its runways won’t land in Elle or W – nor might they ever be worn outside of their respective countries. However, Glenda Bailey’s or Anna Wintour‘s is not the only eye foreign designers hope to capture.

For participants in Islamabad Fashion Week, fashion is a new form of expression that further immerses them in the global culture of the 21st century. When filming Fashion Week Internationale for Vice.com, hostess Charlet Duboc was surprised at the presence of women in full Burkas volunteering backstage: “I couldn’t quite believe it. How does that work? How can you look at that and admire it and yet know you can’t wear it? But they were there, they were appreciating it and it didn’t feel like there was a divide. Like, ‘You do your thing, I do my thing’ and everyone got along.” Fashion transcends more than just clothing to become a force for cultural change. And a force for economic change. Speaking with the Wall Street Journal, Zurain Imam observed, ”Fashion in Pakistan for a long time has been an entertainment sport; at [Karachi Fashion Week], we are trying to really make it about the business of fashion.”

While Kolb concedes that smaller fashion weeks can be good training ground for prospective designers, some bigger names are flocking abroad to show their collections. There probably is no hotter designer in America than Singapore-born, Nepalese-raised Prabal Gurung, whose last two presentations at New York Fashion Week met with near universal acclaim. Even he is considering showing his wares abroad in Moscow, Turkey, London and his native Singapore, saying, “There are so many emerging markets that we want to in some way be a part of, and I would love to showcase my collection in a more global way.” With a crowded and contentious calendar, Glenda Bailey won’t likely end up in Richmond, VA, but who’s to say that she won’t be stomping through a Singaporean jungle for the latest in spring ready-to-wear?

Supers are Doing It for Duran Duran in “Girl Panic”

Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Helena Christensen, Eva Herzigova and Yasmin Le Bon stand in and dress up in Dolce & Gabbana for Duran Duran‘s new music video, “Girl Panic.”

Jonas Akerlund directs the mini-movie chronicling a day in the life of a rag-tag rock and roll band who just happen to have legs up to their necks and cheekbones from which the world hangs. Naomi, of course, plays lead singer Simon Le Bon but I must say Eva Herzigova steals the show as a cavalier and spaced out Nick Rhodes.

Meanwhile, Helena Christensen as Roger Taylor gets wheeled about on a hotel dolly, clearly half in the bag and loving every minute of it and Cindy shows she can still work overtime as John Taylor, hanging out the window of her limo as it speeds down the streets of London.

With Yasmin rounding out the group as an unnamed guitarist, the ladies wreak general havoc on a hotel room, snog groupies, pose for their Harper’s Bazaar UK cover and film amusic video, all while looking hopelessly galmorous.

About three years ago, Fei Fei Sun was just a gal about China, hangin’ with her boyfriend in Shanghai. Several Paris Fashion Week video viewings later, and she’s got the bug to wear it all; to be there in it. Fortunately her razor sharp jawline and chameleon abilities have allowed just that and she skyrocketed her to the fashion stratosphere.. Her first season out, she walked 30 shows without knowing a lick of English. Which I suppose proves the point that you can get by on just your good looks (and in this case, polite, intuitive silence and a fearsome smize). That building that looks like a shake weight is actually one of the tallest buildings in Shanghai. Its panoramic view of the city makes it the tourist vantage point, and also the reason worth checking out. We say shake weight, the chief of the building's board says it reminds him of Pipa Song by Bai Juyi about the "wonderful sprinkling sound of a pipa instrument, like pearls, big and small falling on a jade plate."

When in Shanghai, order a steaming basket of xiolongbao. The word literally means steaming basket, because the dumplings within the broth are cooked right in it. When Fei Fei eats, she eats this.

The most lavish Chinese Gardens in Shanghai are well worth a stroll.

This shopping road winds in the French (naturally) Concession area of Shanghai. It is teeming with little craft stores, trendy shops, art studios and gems waiting to be discovered.

Off the tourist path, we meet Fei Fei Sun's favorite designers from Shanghai. Nominated by WGSN as "Breakthrough Designer of the Year" and named by Forbes as one of 25 most important Chinese fashion people, Fei Fei Sun is right to say this is a designer we should watch. It helps that we can see his designs in Vogue, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, L'Officiel...

Also on the WGSN "Breakthrough Designer of the Year" list, her whimsical unravelling of the feminine form has garnered the attention of Vogue and the biggies. Fei Fei is looking in the direction for design stars on the rise.

La-Di-Da: Chico’s Taps Diane Keaton for Holiday Campaign

Chico’s, that middle-aged, middle brow, middling clothes horse, has signed on Oscar winner/my fairy godmother Diane Keaton to appear in commercials and print ads for their holiday campaign.

“This is my first [fashion campaign]. I love clothes. Can’t you tell?” said La Keaton, tongue firmly in cheek(o). Despite her modesty, Diane Keaton’s style credentials are as solid as they come. Her portrayal of scatterbrained, gender-bending heroine Annie Hall in Woody Allen‘s seminal romantic comedy is still one of the most iconic leading ladies in cinema and fashion.

And since 2006, she’s been a face of L’Oréal Paris. I do have to say, though, those Chico’s trousers are unflattering as all get out…but I digress.

In the Chico’s commercials, Diane shares her thoughts on life, love, family and clothes, such as this little gem she shared with WWD: “Love makes the world go ’round. And so do hats and gloves and a fabulous belt.” Oh, Diane, how’d you get so wise?

The print ads will start making their appearance this November in publications such as O, The Oprah Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar and InStyle with the commercials debuting this holiday season. The campaign’s tagline is “Live for the present” and as a little present — just because I’ll jump at any chance to write about Diane Keaton — have a little bit of this with your morning coffee:

Marisa Berenson has led the kind of charmed, impossibly chic and devastatingly fashionable life that is all but impossible to replicate today. If only because charm, chicness and style are all but impossible to find today. Having lived her entire life in front of the camera — Marisa’s christening portrait appeared in Vogue and she covered Elle magazine with sister Berinthia “Berry” Berenson when she was five – guest editor and longtime friend Steven Meisel collected some of Berenson’s most iconic photographs, as well as personal pics of friends and families, in Rizzoli‘s goregous new tome, Marisa Berenson: A Life in Pictures (2011).

The granddaughter of one of the pillars of Italian couture, Elsa Schiaparelli, Marisa was “invented” by legendary Vogue editor Diana Vreeland at the age of sixteen, and became one of the most prolific models of the 60s and 70s. She graced every cover from Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar to Newsweek and Time and worked with the greatest photographers of the 20th century including Irving Penn, Richard Avedon and Helmut Newton. Then in the 70s, she embarked on a successful film career, along the way becoming, as Yves Saint Laurent dubbed her, “the girl of the seventies.” Featuring an introduction by aspiring popstar Hamish Bowles and a conversation with BFF for the last four decades or so, Diane von Furstenberg, Marisa Berenson: A Life in Pictures, gives insight into one of the most fabulous women to step in front of a camera lens.

What owning this book says about you: “I like my ‘It’ girls the way I like my drugs: pure, uncut and from the 70s.” Marisa Berenson’s rise to “It” status was pre-destined — glamour is literally in her blood — and she did it so effortlessly and so well that any girls aspiring to “It” today are but pale imitations. I’m looking at you, every socialite/DJ with a fashion fixation.

What will people say?!: “Someone loves them some artistic nudes and/or just loves a good boob shot.” True, Marisa Berenson had no problem flaunting what her mother, The Countess Maria Luisa Yvonne Radha de Wendt de Kerlor — a.k.a. Gogo — gave her, though her grandmother certainly did. After seeing a nipple-bearing photo by Arnaud de Rosnay, Schiap, according to Berenson, “was so furious that she practically threw me out of the house and disowned me.” But as DVF so astutely pointed out, “to show your tits was not a big deal at the time. To be young in the seventies was quite different.” Different i.e. awesome.

How this book will make your fashion brain grow: Berenson’s dynamic and daring photos offer a master class in brilliant fashion photography and moreover, in brilliant fashion photographers.

If you like this, you’ll love: Death in Venice (1971), Cabaret (1972), Barry Lyndon (1975) and I Am Love (2009) – Marisa’s work as an actress is almost as impressive as her modeling, particularly her first few films from the 70s. And 2009′s I Am Love proved that, even well into her 60s, she’s still an electrifying and stunning presence.

- Last Fashion Week’s economic impact on Lincoln Center was roughly about $20,902,193, with an estimated $233 million impact per season citywide. And that’s not even counting drug money. [NYT]

- Lanvin‘s Alber Elbaz continues to be the most adorable thing this side of…well, these Lanvin dolls. In a talk he gave over this weekend, Alber explained why he just says no: “I don’t take drugs because if I did I’d love them – I’d be a junkie. Clutches of Death Be Damned! Diana Vreeland Is Making a Comeback

The late Diana Vreeland, one of the most fabulous ladies of the 20th — or really any — century will come roaring back to life thanks to a new documentary and accompanying coffee-table book this fall.

Lisa Immordino Vreeland, Diana’s granddaughter-in-law, directed the film Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel, debuting at the Venice Film Festival September 3rd, as well as wrote the similarly-titled coffee-table book, which hits bookstores October 1st.

The Tents, A History of New York Fashion Week

I just sneak previewed the film that has crept its way into the belly of New York’s fashionable whale. It found three glasses of Chandon and a dime-size ~~hors~~ d’oeuvre dinner. It also found the history of New York Fashion Week, which evolved from a goose chase of Manhattan’s shabbier locales to an editor-friendly runway machine inside Tents that house the most fabulous of circus on the planet. The Tents: The NY Fashion Week Documentary gives a proper remembrance to the 18 years in Bryant Park where fashion changed. Through interviews with Donna, Calvin, Betsey, Isaac, Carolina, Zac, Tommy, editors and NYFW creators, we get an über dramatic (“Editors had to take taxis all over town, HORRIBLE!”), yet pretty darn accurate collective fashion saga. The Fate of Winehouse’s Fred Perry Collection Uncertain

Amy Winehouse had completed work on her collection for Fred Perry up to the Fall 2012 season prior to her death on Saturday, but the label would not confirm whether they would ever see the light of day.

Fred Perrywill leave the decision of what to do with Amy’s future collections up to her family but said, in a statement released yesterday:

“We had a great working and personal relationship with Amy during the design and development of the collaboration. Amy’s unique sense of style and attitude pervaded the entire collection. She was a pleasure to work with and will be deeply missed by the entire Fred Perry team.”

The Winehouse/Perry collaboration, heavily-influenced by Amy’s now iconic style — old (Jewish) black man — launched last October and featured herringbone miniskirts, gingham skinny pants, fitted polos and deck-style loafers. [Telegraph]

In this month of Americana, we want to celebrate everything in fashion, art and design coming out of our great country. And what would the American fashion industry be like without photographers? They bring fashion alive, setting the mood wished to be evoked by designers, editors and marketing teams everywhere. Here we will celebrate four American photographers to learn more about them and see some of their work.

David Armstrong

David Armstrong grew up outside Boston and traveled between his hometown and New York City when he studied at Cooper Union. After receiving his BFA at Tufts University in 1988, he moved to NYC permanently where he began work as a photographer. Starting out with black and white portraits, Armstrong began to experiment with landscapes and cityscapes in the nineties. Luckily, he also has a distinct and introspective eye for fashion – his editorials are moving and emotionally-charged.

Stella McCartney is giving her digital face a bit of a lift with a revamped e-commerce site and iPad app. And just for kicks, she’s debuting her new fall campaign starring modelfriend Natalia Vodianova on her website today.

The campaign was shot by the hardest working M’s in the business, Mert and Marcus in a topiary garden at a private Oxfordshire home. I think I just got all kinds of classy just from writing that.

While the ad will make its way to print in the September issues of Interview,Vogue (US and UK) and Harper’s Bazaar, McCartney wants to draw you to her new sassed up site for a sneak peek. There you’ll also find a slew of special functions for customers such as “Private Wardrobing” — again, classy — and a “Reserve in Store” option for customers too impatient to wait for a delivery.

The new Stella iPad app features a “behind-the-scenes” of her Team GB ad campaign, backstage footage from her fall 2011 show in Paris, a preview of the 2012 resort collection and a “making of” video of the dresses the designer created for the Met Gala.

Sounds like a hoot and a half, but I think I’ll skip that “making of” video unless I want to fall asleep. [WWD]

Emma Watson explores her dark side for Harper’s Bazaar UK as the August cover girl. The Harry Potter star looks positively witchy in an Emilio Pucci dress from his Fall/Winter 2011.12 collection. The cover and spread played with dark and light pallets, and was photographed by Alexi Lubomirski. In her interview she talked about her plans to study abroad this year, and discussed her views on fashion. “It can be savage,” she says, “and cruel, in that it’s prescriptive — you have to look a certain way and fit a certain mould — but also in the way it’s made.” She certainly looks savage in this new spread. Delfina Delettrez Designs Jewelry, Aka Toys for Adults

Harper’s 10 Years Under Glenda Bailey Gets the Coffee Book Treatment

Harper’s Bazaar is perhaps the most editorially-interesting fashion mag in the U.S. and that is thanks in large part to editor-in-chief, Glenda Bailey. Now Bailey has gone through her past decade at the helm to release the coffee table book, Harper’s Bazaar Greatest Hits.

Ever since taking over the tome in 2001, La Bailey’s pushed for fun, daring and unvonventional spreads, from Demi Moore ascending a floating staircase in a McQueen armadillo heel while feeding a giraffe to The Simpsons modeling in Paris with Linda Evangelista and Karl Lagerfeld.

Harper’s Bazaar Greatest Hits starts with Bailey’s first cover — Gwyneth Paltrow…it could be worse — and goes year by year, as edited by Bailey herself over last summer in the Hamptons. I foresee one of the book’s 20,000 copies landing on FashionIndie‘s already full coffee table in the coming months.

And though rumors persist that Bailey is always one stilettoed step away from being replaced at Harper’s, both she and Hearst president David Carey deny them.

Carey refers to a story WWD ran questioning Bailey’s future as “a bad piece of journalism” while Bailey just takes it in stride:

“Any editor at the top of their game has to deal with that. It would be naïve to believe everything you read about yourself in print. I just laugh it off.” [WWD]

Smurfette Makes Her Editorial Debut in Harper’s

Lara Stone, get off the road because Smurfette is going faster than you can drive. In celebration/blatant promotion of the new The Smurfs movie, Harper’s Bazaar tapped the blue babe for an accessory editorial.

The lone female in a sea of blue balls, Smurfette models, commercial-smiles and generally “gives” in Marc Jacobs, Lanvin, Dolce & Gabbana and Louis Vuitton.

She looks great and all, but frankly, I’m awaiting that true diva of the silver screen, Miss Piggy.

As an editor at Vogue Paris – hilarious timing by the way — in this fall’s The Muppets, La Piggy is giving Carine/Emmanuelle a serious run for their money.

Of course, the only thing green Miss Piggy covets is her longtime lilypad lover — and friend of Gaga – Kermit D. Frog. [Harper's Bazaar, MTV]
