10 Easy Ways to Transform Your Style

What happens when getting dressed in the morning loses the fun and adventure it once had? After all getting dressed in the morning should have fun and adventure – a sense of style is really the only thing separating us from the other primates. Monkeys can pretty much do everything we can except walk in heels. So before losing your humanity, try these 10 easy tips to transform your style and breathe some new life into your wardrobe.

- Take a history lesson. When in doubt, look at our corseted foremothers and dandyfied foregays for a new silhouette or sartorial point of reference.

- Think iconic. WWAD? What would Audrey do? Channel your favorite style icon with a nod of an accessory or your own reinterpretation of their look.

- Trend-a-Friend. Try swapping clothes with a friend whose style or collection of turbans you especially admire. It’s free and after all, what are friends for but to use for your own personal gain?

- Cleanse your palette. When the thought of choosing a color combination or matching the right prints becomes too much to bear (#whitegirlproblems) throw it all out and go all black (#racist) — it’s a great way to refresh your imagination and your taste.

- Cut it off. A hair cut or a new color can do wonders in no time at all, changing not only your style but also your personality and if you’re Hayden Panettiere, hopefully your career.

- Go on a gender-bender. Whether you decide to do it like a dude or strap on a man-skirt, there’s a whole new realm open to you once you open your mind.

- Pick a theme, any theme. One of my favorite pastimes is dressing according to theme: 70s Coke Whore (booty shorts, knee socks and a gold lamé halter); Hipster at Play (plaid shirt under an acid grey denim romper); Slutty Soccer Mom Chaperoning the Prom (high-waisted jean short, espadrilles, bandeau and a bolero) . The possibilities are endless!

- Revisit the classics. You ever think to yourself, “That outfit was Classic Me?” Dressing like your old self, short of strapping on an adult diaper, can make your feel new again.

- Try a formal arrangement. There was a time when men never left the house without a hat and ladies always wore gloves. Formality may have gone the way of privacy and sincerity — straight to hell — but Fancy is always in style.

- Make some movie magic. From Breakfast at Tiffany’s to The Devil Wears Prada, filmdom is full of inspiring looks and more importantly, inspiring makeover montages.

‘Tis a cry full of mixed emotions. My first and strongest feeling will always be one of longing for her Heroes hair, when it was lusciously long, bouncing in loose curls. She forwent her streaming tresses about a year ago in exchange for a bob, cutting her ties to innocence, and to my heart. Now she’s fussing with it again, making it even shorter and choppier. I do give her kudos for trying. Perhaps her stance was that long hair is easy, it doesn’t take any balls at all to keep your hair long. But Hayden, the world didn’t love you for having balls. We loved you because you’re gorgeous, and your hair accentuated that. Now you have to wait YEARS (or minutes, depending on the skills of your hair extensionist) to get it back. Let’s take a journey through Hayden Patteniere‘s hair, so you can be forewarned when she ~~baldly~~ boldly steps onto the killer screen in Scream 4.

2006 – Here’s a young Hayden in her long Heroes hair, and her millionth cheerleader uniform, (ahem, Bring it On 2: All or Nothing, I Love You Beth Cooper, and more).

2008 – Her hair took a slight trim as Beth Cooper, whom the awkward boy loves. The change was hardly noticeable.

2009 – And, she started hacking away. She raised the cut to shoulder grazing and layered it á la The Rachel.

2010 – A Rihanna bob? Seriously Hayden? Sure, she’s throwing off the whole teenage look, and boy, did she have to do something. Even Jennifer Aniston hated The Rachel. But she went a little severe for her facial structure.

2011 – Hayden SCRE4Med long pixie as attempts to escape death. SPOILER: Her hairstylist gets stabbed to death by his own shears.

With the heat wave this summer reaching an all time high, many celebs are walking into salons asking for shorter cuts. With the hair off their backs it’s suddenly more manageable and easier to take a stroll down the street in the hot summer sun. Kristen Stewart, Rihanna, Janet Jackson, and Hayden Panettiere, are some of the most noted individuals to receive a shorter cut. From edgy colors to softer side bangs, these celebs all took a pretty bold plunge. To learn more about the short hair phenomenon I talked a bit with Latrice Strader, stylist and owner of Destiny De’ve hair salon and spa. Latrice, known for delivering vibrant colors and the latest styles, weighed in on summer’s newest trend:

Some girls avoid cutting their hair too short because they feel they aren’t edgy enough to pull it off. Do you think most girls can pull off a short hair do?

I believe there is a short style for every shaped face. Some face shapes allow you to go shorter than others. When considering a short cut you should consider the shape of your face, head, your hair texture and personality.

Out of Kristen, Rhianna, Hayden, and Janet, whose summer hairstyle do you like the best?

Kristen is my favorite. I love fun styles and her haircut is very choppy and playful. It is also the most flexible cut.

What’s the most popular hairstyle you’ve seen this season?

Layered bobs are frequently requested in my salon in addition to shaved sides similar to Rhianna’s latest style. Long loose wave styles similar to what Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Kardashian wear are also very popular.

Have a lot of girls walked into your salon, Destiny De’ve, asking for a shorter hair cut for the summer?

We get tons of requests for shorter hair cuts in the summer months as well as throughout the year. My salons, Destiny De’Ve, is located close to a popular college and surrounded by young urban and trendy individuals. Most requests are for short pixie cuts, shave sides, generally fun and creative looks. Most of our clients are inspired by celebrities when it comes to short hair styles like Rhianna, Victoria Beckham, Halle Berry and Kelis. These are the top four celebrity style requests I receive year round.

What do you think is the biggest “hair don’t”, a style that most people are better off without?

A huge “hair don’t” in my book is greasy hair. Hair should have body and movement. Too much oil weighs the hair down causing it to stick to your face. Hair lack luster serums and gloss should be used to avoid this problem. When hair is oily and greasy, it’s time to shampoo and re-style your hair.

I think I’m in love with Hayden’s dress. My trip to the L.A. Fashion Market gave me a little insight on the most prevalent trends for Fall 2009, and lace is huge! The awesome thing about lace is the fact that it’s been around forever – so there are a ton of quality vintage items out there. If you’re a do-it-yourself-er you can check out your local fabric/craft store and purchase either a roll or a few yards of pre-made lace and easily customize a piece already in your closet. Maybe one of fashion’s most annoying events, The Emmy’s, aired from Los Angeles last night. Looking through all of the heinous dresses on the red carpet, I found dozens that provided me with superb fashion assassin material. What can be said about these two that hasn’t already been said? Well in the case of Miley Cyrus it’s a bit ironic. After evolving from that troll into a well dressed human with nice clothes, all she wants to do is take them off. Miley if you want to be true teen style icon don’t get pregnant. Teen pregnancy is sooo last year try herpes it’s less committment and no one has started that trend yet. As far as Hayden Panettiere is concerned if Heroes tanks and her career continues to suck she can kiss her stylist goodbye and the only people who will be hearing about her are the ones that are currently involved in her save the whales campaign (none!). But regardless when a 27 year old C-lister leaves the bar with one of these two atleast he can use the excuse that they looked 20 before he had his way with them.

Is Hayden the newcomer of the year because she showed her back in a photoshoot and maintains a daily column on Parez Hilton and The Superficial.

And The Spice Girls? Really, were there no other bands nominated? Uh, I give up…
