Rei Kawakubo; From H&M to Louis Vuitton

Legendary designer Rei Kawakubo is collaborating high and low. Beside the one-off line she’s doing for H&M this November, the Comme des Garçons designer approached Louis Vuitton and will design six handbags that will be sold exclusively in a temporary Louis Vuitton shop at the Comme des Garçons store in Tokyo’s Aoyama district this fall.

Kawakubo said the collection would include two original “party bags” she designed, plus reeditions of two 30-year-old handbags and customized versions of two current monogram styles. The temporary store is slated to open Sept. 4 with an interior she described as half luxury, half raw.

Meanwhile, Kawakubo disclosed that she’s designed a red, pie-shaped shop concept that will house her Comme des Garçons for H&M collection in its entirety in 20 select locations, with smaller versions in a great number of doors come early November. She’s also tapped photographer Peter Lindbergh for the campaign that will feature Missy Rayder, among others.

Marc is also excited about the collab, stating “It is impossible to overstate Rei Kawakubo’s influence on modern fashion, I find it wonderful to think that 30 years ago, this immense talent, someone who has inspired so many others, was inspired by Louis Vuitton.”

H&M Talks Fall 2008-9 Collection

We already announced “a big venture” into organic cotton for autumn/winter 2008-9 but what else does high street favorite, H&M, have up its sleeve for next season?

“A theme we have been working with is tailored, with Forties and Seventies inspiration - sharp, androgynous, elegant,” Ann-Sofie Johansson - who, as the retailer’s head of design, must have one of the best, if not busiest, jobs in fashion.

And it doesn’t stop there. “Folk, a lot of knitwear, colors and motifs from all over the world and art and decadence with the Twenties as inspiration” are also on the radar, as is “the bohemian life of an artist and their eccentric ways of dressing”.

With an offering like that, it’s little wonder that H&M is one of the world’s most successful high street retailers - a fact that Johansson was keen to impress.

“It’s a combination of fashion and quality at the best price,” she said. “We have such a wide assortment, which means everyone can find something at H&M.”

Summer Style at H&M

So I normally don’t recommend H&M but sometimes, a girl is low on money and needs to stay on top of the latest fast fashions. To seek out the best pieces, keep in mind the key pieces seen on the runways (patterns, fabrics, styles), and stay away from too many basics.

H&M Goes Greener

We already know that H&M started an organic cotton collection but now the company has announced that it’s going greener. It plans an even bigger step into organic cotton for Autumn/Winter 2008-2009, and will use other sustainable materials like organic and recycled wool and polyester.

“We are now using organic cotton in all departments,” said H&M’s head of design, Ann-Sofie Johansson.

Among the organic items you will be able to buy are accessories like scarves (left), and recycled wool mix skirts, coats, and trousers.

Men Discover Fast Fashion

According to today’s Times “Styles” section, men have discovered that thing called “fast fashion.” You know, just like women did forever ago. And just like women, they love it. Rather than spend hundreds on a Dolce & Gabbana scarf, they’ve realized they can enjoy the knockoff that looks the same and costs a fraction of the price from stores like Urban Outfitters or H&M.

If, however, you remain a label whore and the knockoffs just don’t cut it for you (which we totally understand — that kind of label validation really is a mood booster), but feel you really should tighten your belt a bit, remember the biggest difference between the real and knocked-off items is the price.
