An interesting take on the idea of a “luxury home”

First order of business, Jennifer Love-Hewitt is nominated for Best Actress – Miniseries or Made-for-TV Movie for The Client List. If you haven’t seen it, J. Love plays a suburban housewife who gets pulled into the seedy uderbelly of high-class whorin’, gets addicted to coke and loses her kids and husband, all while Cybil Shepard drunkenly yells at her. Dame Judi Dench ain’t got shit on that.

What really grinds my gears re: the Globes is their insistence on lumping the supporting actors into one category, so that Drama, Comedy and Mini-Series/TV Movies all compete against one another. Why not send the same message and just eliminate the supporting categories all together?

Despite the stiff competition, Glee‘s Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch (2nd year in a row) scored nominations. Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison also repeat their nominations from last year’s Globes, for Best Actress and Actor, respectively. The kids in New Directions will defend their Best Comedy crown against Modern Family, 30 Rock, The Big Bang Theory, The Big C and Nurse Jackie.

The rest of the nominees in the comedy categories are kind of a snooze, with just a repeat of what already took place at the Emmys months ago. Will Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie) and Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory) reprise their wins? Have I ever seen either of their shows. Do I even care at this point?

Here’s a hint, the answer to at least two of those questions is “Hell to the no.”

Far more interesting, much like the movie nominations, are the drama contenders. The Best Actor – Drama category is perhaps the most competitive this year, with Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) and newcomer Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire) vying for top honors. By this point, Hugh Laurie is the Meryl Streep of this category and would get nominated for taking a dump on his cane then curing cancer with it.

Elisabeth Moss earns a well-deserved nomination for Best Actress for Mad Men (no Supporting purgatory for her), and will face off against Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife), Piper Perabo (Covert Affairs), Katey Segal (Sons of Anarchy; meanwhile, I had no idea Peg Bundy was back on TV and I would like to put forth my vote for a Sons of Anarchy/Modern Family crossover episode) and Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer).

As for the Best Drama Globe, MVP Mad Men comes in with three previous wins but faces competition from fellow cable fare, Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad and Dexter, with The Good Wife as the only broadcast series represented.

We’ll find out who will win, lose or drink til they work up enough courage to talk to George Clooney on Sunday, January 16th, 2011.

You see, when I took this photo I had just gotten showered and dressed for the first time all day. My husband was in Kansas City spending some time with his buddies from college and letting me work on some class assignments for the week. Well, up until this photo I “worked” on cleaning the house, organizing the basement, taking the dogs for a run, talking on the phone to my Mother and Grandfather for an hour and basically doing everything possible to avoid working on my assignment.  So around 5 pm I decided enough was enough, but before I could face the task I needed some encouragement.  So, I slipped on my favorite skirt of the moment, belted a flowing long tank over it and threw on my new sassy heels! Even I have been found guilty of being stuck in a style box.  I used to have a signature look that consisted of fitted crewneck t-shirts in solid colors from Target.  I wore them with jeans, skirts, or black pants (capri’s, gaucho’s, palazzo pants…whatever was in style at the time).  Until one day I looked in my closet and thought to myself “this is not the closet of a girl with a distinct sense of style”.

I decided it was time to incorporate more prints and dresses into my wardrobe…and I haven’t looked back since.  From my vintage dashiki to my embroidered floral JWLA dress, I not only stepped out of my style box, there is no longer a box in sight!

I brought about this change through my approach to shopping.  When I enter a store now I ask myself the following questions when I gravitate toward a piece of apparel or an accessory:

• Do have something like this already?
• Would this piece stand out or blend into my closet?
• Is this a color or print that I already have plenty of in my closet?

That last question is actually one that I reference often.  I own so much black, white, and gray that I literally slap myself on the wrist when I try to grab something in one of those colors.  I now skim across racks and if there is a particular block of pieces in a color or style (ahem…empire dresses) that I don’t need, I just move on.  There’s a reason why I don’t even step into a White House, Black Market…I’m not buyin’ what they’re sellin’!

Guys, the same goes for you.  Are you stuck in a polo and jeans/shorts look?  Maybe consider trying a cool screen-printed tee or some bermuda/board shorts.  I have several girlfriends that complain that their husbands are in a style rut.  This is a fact.  Consider changing up your look and I bet the lady in your life will notice…

So go ahead.  Take the plunge into a whole new world by breaking out of your style box.  Whether it’s going from solids to prints (or vice versa) or from a hipster to a preppy style (Kristine…holla!), try something new.  Maybe you’ll end up like me…without a box!

Icelandic brand E-Label has accused Beyoncé’s House of Dereon of stealing one of their designs:

The item in question? A pair of studded leggings (above) that the brand says look way too similar to their Heavy Metal Leggings:

E-label owner Heba Hallgrimsdottir said, “This is naturally huge and I am still half in shock. I didn’t recognize straight away that this was her own label: I just thought she was wearing our leggings. It is practically just copy/paste…I have only just heard about this and no decision has yet been taken. We need to inspect her brand’s trousers closer because, according to law, it is not copied if a certain number of things have been changed from the original design.”

I’m not too sure Beyonce copied the leggings. Studded leggings abound in many stores…

In a world of celebrity worship and red-carpet obsession, it’s easy to forget that for most women a wedding, bar mitzvah or the prom is as dressed up as it gets. And those occasions, while special, don’t necessarily inspire the average attendee to shell out four figures for designer eveningwear — even if she has it. So how much are such women willing to pay for a one- or two-night-only dress?

All of the gowns featured in this story retail for $600 or less — not cheap but, at a fraction of designer prices, they fall into what many industry types deem “the sweet spot” between $300 and $800, where style and value converge. “Women are so intelligent and smart today. This dress retails for $490, but if it doesn’t look good and it costs $2,000, they’re still not going to buy it for $490,” says Kay Unger, noting that the dress pictured (see page 7), from her resort 2011 collection, has 11 tiers of silk organza and charmeuse. Her point is that customers want the runway and red-carpet trends but without a four-figure price tag.

That’s something that A.B.S. by Allen Schwartz has down to a science for the prom, black-tie and, increasingly, bridesmaid sets. “Retailers don’t really want us to be above the $500 mark,” says Lloyd Singer, president of sales for A.B.S. The key to hitting that price is volume and production. A.B.S. is manufactured domestically, but the majority of houses with prices in that ballpark outsource to Asia. Unger falls into that category, as does Sue Wong, who bills herself as “the everywoman couturier.”

“When the average woman out there opens up a Vogue, Harper’s or Elle and you have Valentino at $2,500 and Chanel at $3,000, it’s not realistic,” says Wong, whose prices average between $300 and $600. “They think that it’s a total fantasy for them, that only A-listers like J.Lo or Nicole Kidman get to wear it.” Wong doesn’t own her own factories in Asia but acts as her own agent, thus “eliminating the middle man so there’s no further markup. The customer loves me for it.”

Of course, there is a divide between what a few hundred and a few thousand dollars buys. “There are fabric and detail and finishes that are different between a $5,000 gown and an $800 gown,” says Joe Boitano, Saks Inc. group senior vice president and general merchandise manager, noting that the $400-to-$800 dress range has become a dominant business for Saks. “There’s never going to be the same detail and quality but there is a lot of value in the $800 or $600 dress.”

Angelina Jolie was in Cancun last month to promote her movie Salt, and while there she made time for an interview with the British fashion publication Stylist. Her kids Shiloh, Maddox, Pax, and Zahara also made the trip to Mexico, and they later joined her for the rest of her worldwide press tour. The family is now in Northern California for a few weeks as Brad Pitt works on Moneyball. Angelina spoke to the magazine about her family life, how she and Brad manage to fit in alone time, and Shiloh’s much-discussed style. She said:

On date nights and alone time with Brad:

  “Yeah, we just have
to schedule it. We don’t normally have anyone spend the night with our
family, so once every week or two weeks, we’ll ask somebody to spend the
night, so we can go and be alone together. We just go to another part
of the house and lock the door. We have date nights, absolutely, you
have to if you have children! Sometimes we go out, but we both miss the
kids so we don’t like to go far.”

On Shiloh’s style:

“It’s not my choice. I have a very strong
willed four-year-old girl who tells me what she wants to wear and I let
her be who she is. People look at kids and think they should wear
certain types of clothes; I think children should wear what they want
and express themselves, so we give them different options of things.
Zahara dresses very much like a girl, very pink and flowery, very
feminine. Shiloh cried and said, ‘Please cut my hair off, I don’t want
to have long hair.’ I’m not going to leave it long because somebody
thinks I should,” she says “I want to do what’s in her head and what’s
in her heart is to dress like that. I think it’s beautiful.”

On meeting Brad during Mr. and Mrs. Smith:

  “It didn’t begin
on the film set; we became friends on the film set, but it began after.
And at a certain age, having gone through enough experiences, I think
you know. It wasn’t courageous, it was more comforting to have found my
family.”

On learning from her kids:

“They’re so knowledgeable, so
self-aware, gracious. And they’re all different. One of them is a
natural leader and has this kind of strength, and one of them has
extraordinary grace and elegance and femininity that I didn’t realize
you could be born with. Like every mother, I’m learning patience and all
these wonderful things from them and I’m just so curious to see who
they’re going to be when they get older.”

I’ve been buying Aura Cacia organic oils and the occasional body product for years now and always liked them, so when I stumbled upon their home scents I was happy to give them a try. I wanted a couple of electric air fresheners for areas I’d rather not put a reed diffuser, and the promise of aromatherapeutic scents lured me in, right with an ingredient list chock full of natural essential oils.

I chose Bergamot & Orange and Lime & Grapefruit and hurried home to plug them in. What a disappointment! While everything smells great if you shove the refills up your nose, the air fresheners have absolutely no throw and you just can't smell anything. I tried three different refills, so it's not likely a bad batch and also moved the gadgets from room to room and tested them in small closed spaces (both bathrooms). No luck and no scent. I'm sticking with reed diffusers. Thankfully the kittens have been good so far about not knocking them down, even if Giselle has been stealing reeds here and there to chase them around the house.

Bottom Line: Meh.

Once in Natalie’s indigenous, technocolor meets secret garden dream world, you would not want to move on. It’s one of those places in which any lover of visual stimulation might want to bury themselves, maybe even pray to come back as one of her beloved cats, maybe Cool Dude or Pansey Puff. When Lily and I walked into the home of inarguably one of the coolest couples in London, John, Natalie’s husband was blasting one of my favorite ’60?s songs, Crimson and Clover and there was an immediate bonding of spirits. John, a painter, was living in a minimal and modern aesthetic when they first met and was reluctant to become a part of what he referred to as “Natalie’s junk,” alluding to her literally endless, floor to ceiling and everywhere you turn, relics of her life that fill their house. However, it was clear that with time spent around Natalie’s inner and outer radiance, he had adapted to her explosively resplendent eye, which is reminiscent of some of her favorite post-impressionist’s like Matisse, Bonnard and Vuillard, but in three dimensions. Spectacular in it’s totality, John now uses the decor of their home as the subject matter for some of his paintings. Natalie is an artist of textile design and says that she “sees the world in pattern and color,” much like the artists she admires. She, herself, is such a compelling expression of her vivid imagination with her signature magenta mane of hair, dresses made from piles of acquired kimonos, layers of Indian and African jewelry and collector’s items of original Kenzo’s, that people apologize to her on the street when they see her for not wearing color themselves. “Heaven” is how she describes her idyllic childhood, growing up on a farm in Scottland during WWII, with her grandparents, who’s pastoral lifestyle and memorable characters loom heavily in her memories. “There were thousands of children, because the workers each had twelve kids…and about thirty cats..my grandfather use to make porridge in the mrornings…then go to the briar where the cows lived, and the cats would follow him, and they would have a nice treat of porridge and cow’s milk.” Today Natalie still has many cats. Walking into her house is like walking into the visual story of her life. From the moment you approach the front door with it’s very particular countrified shade of royal blue, set within a cottage style, moody gray stone wall, on one of the most charming cobblestone streets of Chelsea, the tale begins. If it was written in words, it would be thousands of pages long and deep.

Christina Aguilera is barely recognizable in this awful, sloppy coffee-run outfit. We get that everyone deserves to be comfortable – especially before their first cup – but this takes “lazy” to a new level.

What she did wrong:

Sweatpants are great for lounging around the house – but Christina should have taken the 2 seconds to throw on some relaxed fit jeans or jeggings before going out into the world.

Oversize clothes are on-trend, but only when paired with otherwise fitted clothing. Christina wore baggy pants, an oversize t-shirt, and an extra large sweater all at once. Big no-no.

What she should have done:

The oversize trend is great when it comes to sexy off-the shoulder t-shirts like this pretty pink Rough Roses Lexington Cropped Oversize shirt ($58). Christina could have opted for this comfy top, then gone with fitted pieces for the rest.

Once a good pair of jeans is worn in, they can be (almost) as comfy as sweatpants. Start breaking in these flattering DKNY Jeans Skinny jeans ($54) – they may just become your new favorite pair.

Instead of wearing plastic shower shoes, Christina should have opted for an equally-comfortable, but infinitely better looking leather flat pair like these Steve Madden Rivierra  sandals ($69.95).

Instead of that fall number, Christina should have gone with a more summery hat style (it is July, not December, after all) like this cool Nordstrom Grosgrain Border Straw fedora ($28).

Think all vegetarians are scrawny, pasty, mousy types? PETA is about to prove you way wrong!

The critter-friendly organization has named actress Olivia Wilde the Sexiest Vegetarian of 2010.

“Animal lover and activist Olivia Wilde proves that being vegan helps one shine from the inside out,” PETA writes on its Web site.

“She has saved lives on Fox’s hit show ‘House‘ and has saved the lives of animals off-screen by choosing a vegan diet. Going vegan saves the lives of about 100 animals a year!”

The va-va-vegan explains on her Web site that she adopted the lifestyle mainly because she wanted to boycott torture factories, and adds, “I am also way happier when I eat a plant-based diet, and I feel about a thousand times more energetic.”

Of being named this year’s Sexiest Vegetarian — alongside “The Biggest Loser” trainer Bob Harper (“a dude who disproves the silly lie that vegans cant be strong” says Wilde) — the beauty, who appears in the upcoming “Tron: Legacy” and next year’s sci-fi fantasy “Cowboys & Aliens,” writes, “I am really honored, and very inspired to continue living the vegan lifestyle that has been so good to my body, my animal friends, and the world we live in. So thank you, PETA, and thanks to all who voted for me!”

Figure skater Johnny Weir let Bluefly video cameras into his closet so that the nation might ogle his vast clothing collection, which contains much more than controversial fur-accented unitards. Weir has a two-bedroom apartment in New Jersey, one bedroom of which he uses just for clothes — in addition to his two walk-in closets. “I live in New Jersey, and that affords me a lot more closet space than the average New Yorker gets,” Weir explained. “And believe me, I need it!” We spoke to him more about his Chanel jacket obsession, fur pillows, Louboutins as art pieces, and his upcoming clothing line.

What is your advice on closet cleaning?
I don’t get rid of anything — I’m such a pack rat. There could be something that I got ten years ago that I wouldn’t get rid of. I have a vintage Chanel jacket that I don’t actually fit into — a very classic Chanel tweed jacket. I just have it as a sort of art installment. And someday I’m going to have a kid, so whether it’s a boy or girl they’re going to inherit a really great wardrobe.

Do you wear women’s clothing?
I’m lucky because I’m really small so I can wear men's clothes and women’s clothes.

Do you wear women’s shoes, too?
Usually I try not to buy women’s shoes — I have no heels in my collection. I want to buy a pair of Louboutin patent-leather heels just to fit in the apartment as an art installation. I have a pair of Chanel women's boat shoes and a pair of women’s sneakers from Gucci. And I have a small foot.

How do you feel about man heels?
I don’t like the idea of that look — I think it’s not quite right. But there are those situations where you’re performing or doing a shoot where, you know, there’s nothing wrong with a little heel. I think more men should walk in heels and run in heels and see what women have to deal with every day.

How often do you shop?
It depends on the paychecks. It depends if I’m having a good month or a bad month, but if it’s a good month I’ll go and treat myself once or twice a week. I recently got a deal to write a book and I had to treat myself and I went and bought myself a Chanel jacket — a new one, a modern one from one of the recent collections.

What are your tips for closet organization?
I know exactly everything that I have. Whether it’s a tank top or fur coat, I’ll be able to pinpoint exactly where it goes in the house. I have special bins for things I don’t actually wear because I don’t actually need them. And I keep everything color coded, so I have a very strict system of closeting.

You encountered a spot of trouble earlier this year for wearing a bit of fur on one of your skating outfits. Do you own a lot of fur?
I do have a lot of fur. I’m a big fan of fur. I’m not a fan of nutria or fake fur and I’ve taken a lot of flack for that, but it’s just a choice that I make. I travel a lot to Russia and it’s usually in winter when I’m in Russia, so you can’t walk around in a plastic coat and plastic boots when it's minus 40 degrees. I’m from the country, I’ve gone hunting, so I know what happens. I know everything there is to know about the fur industry and I choose to wear fur.

How do you store your furs?
I have one closet that’s special and air conditioned just for fur, but it’s all fur coats and scarves and blankets and pillows and things like that.

You have real fur pillows?
I like to have a furry bed. I like to get cozy even in the summertime. The air conditioning gets cold and I like to snuggle.

How’s the clothing line coming along?
We’re meeting with several different producers and people that are willing to help and want to help and are very passionate about me sort of putting my name on some fashions. I’ve been so busy, and it seems like it’s been a long time since the Olympics, but it really hasn’t and I haven’t stopped doing appearances and performing. And I'm writing my single and trying to write my book. And I found a little bit of cellulite yesterday so I’ve been in the gym every day.

What kind of price point are you aiming for?
I want Chanel quality, of course — a different price point, but of course Chanel quality. If I’m going to put my name on it, it’s gotta be good enough for Uncle Karl. Price point? I’m thinking along the lines of All Saints or Topshop — I wouldn’t go crazy and put my name on a heel for $700. I’m not a tried-and-true designer just yet. Maybe when I’m 50 or 70 I can put my name on a shoe for $700.

Wearing pretty much Forever 21 everything, D&G wedges

Some shots from the Forever 21 preview party (and one from the next morning) – things started off surreally with a walk by the campaign bus on the way in..there was an editor’s hour previewing new pieces, sipping champagne, and marveling over the cab parked at the bottom level and the 90,000 square feet the store covers…progressed into a packed house and a performance by The Virgins. I had a ton of fun and got to see a lot of my favorite faces..thanks F21 for having us! See more shots on their blog here – I’m at the Salt Lake City airport right now so I only have a few photos that I was able to upload before leaving my house this morning..but there are defintely more to come. Heading to Tokyo for a few photo shoots that I’m super excited about..just gotta get through this interminable layover first..I think my next step is wandering around in hopes of finding a Jamba Juice.
