There are a couple ways of getting yourself invited to these selective functions some of which are pretty obvious but it’s always good to know that these ways work. Keep reading to find out how to get those invites filling up your inbox.

Here’s how it’s done:

Step 1: Hold it out in front of you and admire its beauty. Or lay it out on a flat surface.

Whoaaaa a Double Hair-Bow!

What: Silk scarf, 5’ long, 6” wide

How: Place scarf under hair and pull up. Smooth out hair and wrap scarf 2-3 times at base for support. Tie into a bow, pulling the loops as far as they will go (without the loose ends slipping through, becoming a knot). Take a side from each bow arch and tie them into another bow. Expand the loops as wide as they go, and there you go.

Sized Up Fedora

What: Wide brim straw fedora, one size bigger than you’d normally wear.

How: Stuff all of your hair into the hat, letting some of it emerge from the beneath the brim. You don’t want to look hairless.

Raising the Barrette

What: Metal squeeze-release clips

How: Twist hair into a bun atop your head. Bring the end of your hair forward on the last twist. Clip that bit to the roots of your hair. Let the ends fray forward.

Smooth Tied Caplet

What: Silk square headscarf, 3’ by 3’

How: Fold in half along the diagonal. Scrunch all hair to the back of your head. Place fold along the backside of your hairline, pressing mass of hair into the scarf. Bring the two corners forward and wrap them around so they tie in the back. Here’s the key: bring the middle point of the triangle over to one side and tie it in the same knot as the other two ends. Make a bow, or knot and tuck the ends.

Hair Hammock Headband

What: A favorite of hippies everywhere it’s 1/3 encased elastic, 2/3 spreadable fabric.

How: Place all hair into the “hammock” part as you pull the elastic around your head. I like doing it at a slight angle with the elastic in front, but place it to taste.

Self-Contained Braid

What: Thin silk scarf, 5’ long, 6” wide

How: Tie the scarf around a low ponytail. Split hair into three sections for a braid and place the two ends of the scarf with a section. Braid normally, making sure the scarf shows through. At the base of the braid, wrap each end of the scarf twice then tie the ends in a knot.

Bow to the Fifties Housewife

What: Headscarf, 3′ by 3′

How: Fold at the diagonal, and again so the point is at the folded edge. Smush your hair into a wad at the back of your head, and cup it with the middle of the scarf, point side touching the hair (the outer layer should be smooth). Pull tight and tie in a bow just above your temple. Pull out the edges of the arches so that the bow reaches its fullest capacity. If you have bangs, let them hang out.

Over Comb

What: Decorative comb from the days of yore.

How: Bring hair to a low ponytail, wrapping the base with a small chunk of hair. Secure it together by sinking the teeth of the comb in.

Just like our Mother Monster, I am my hair. It’s all the glory that I bear. Well, as I slept in a tent and rolled around in dirt for days on end at Bonnaroo, my hair and I both became one dirty hippie. My battle plan for my hair was avoidance; I wrapped it in headscarves, hats and the likes as I determinedly kept it from touching any skin at all. Inevitably, it molded itself into a giant matted dread in the back of my head. Enter famed master hair stylist Peter Butler, or rather I entered the Garnier Fructis Tent on Sunday of Bonnaroo, for a deep conditioning hair washing.

Wow! Pure glory. That was the most ecstatic hair washing of my life. And the most drastic difference from before to after. Not so dreadful anymore.

Side note: Dreadlocks can look sexy and incredibly chic on the right person. It takes dedication and upkeep, and they can be very beautiful. But perhaps not when acquired by accident.

How-To get the LIPS: Atomic (fuchsia violet) Lipstick, leaving a strip clear in the middle. Apply Bedaub (mint green) Cream Pigment down the middle, blending slightly with the lipstick.

How-To get the NAILS: Start by painting the back end of the nail with Gamma (neon orange), and let it dry. Paint the tips in thick and curved with the nail in Radium (acidic lime shimmer).

All you need for this beauty routine is a tube of solid lip balm, an angled eye shadow brush and fine loose glitter of your choice.

Step 1: Take your lip balm and apply it to your eyebrow, covering the skin slightly above and below. I like Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm because it goes on smoothly and has a cooling effect. And please, make sure you buy a separate tube you’re not going to use on your lips.

Step 2: Dip your angled eye shadow brush into your pot of glitter, shaking off the excess. Apply pressure in a sweeping motion across the length of your brow. Press the brush down to make sure the glitter will adhere to the balm without budging. A good quality, super cheap brush will do just fine, like the Sonia Kashuk Angled Eyeshadow Brush. As for glitter, Make Up For Ever Glitters are amazing, and I’m obsessed with NYX Glitter Powder, which is what I used here.

Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the eyebrow is coated with an amount of glitter than suits you. For the finished product below, I executed steps 1 and 2 three times for each eyebrow.

FashionIndie Technique – Quite possibly the simplest way to tie a chic turban:

Wrapping your head from the back also allows you to contain your hair entirely within the turban. Tie or pin back a bun ever so loosely so it’s easy to flatten, and let the fabric cup the hair.

Indian Sikh (male) - the most basic traditionally male method:

Though this is a masculine turban, it can also look fabulous on a woman. The trick seems to be wrapping diagonally to perfect that starburst in the center front.

Indian Sikh (female) – seemingly the most time and fabric intensive feminine method:

White turbans like this often note a higher rank in society. Perhaps that’s why they’ve made it so particularly difficult to achieve.

Indian Rajasthani – less complicated, more colorful method:

So, our instructor might not be authentically Jamaican, but by the length of his dreads, he seems highly dedicated. Perhaps an old Rasta Man taught him how to tie this proper turban.

How to get the look:

Start with wet hair. Apply a smoothing serum like Warren Tricomi Hair Polish to keep it sleek. Brush hair to one side and pull it ear level. Begin braiding while pulling outward and forward, then guide the braid upward. Pull the plait over your head keeping it aligned to the tops of your ears. Using complementing bobby pins, pin it in place at the end of the braid and eliminate the need for a hair tie.

Wear it like Ashley Olsen with a loose Cali vibe by leaving it wispy, or slick it back with pomade or hairspray for the super tight Ungaro look.
