Designer Daily: Ajna

Edited by

Designer Beryl Man has shifted her concerns from Donna Karan’s knitwear and Hussein Chalayan’s collection, to focusing on sustainability within her own label, Ajna. Man creates clothing that makes people think, and that makes the world a better place. Convertible, ever changing garments are made up of artisanal and organic textiles with low-impact dyes. She embraces the philosophy of the Tao: a life of simplicity with non-interference with the natural course of events. With that, Man is doing all in her power to create and produce in a way that won’t disrupt Mother Nature.

Designer Daily: Luv AJ

Edited by

We discovered a Heavy Metal Lover in Luv AJ to balance out Hussein Chalayan’s Light Metal Lover from earlier today. Luv AJ designer Amanda Thomas is 23 and utterly rocking the LA jewelry scene with fans like Nicole Richie and Kardashians, and rad girls who like bad ass bling. This heavy collection is made from sheet metal, thick chains and gritty vibes. Her lookbook, shot by Fashion Gone Rogue, shows beautiful teen angst via exasperation, torn (and beer) sweatshirts, a skateboard and cuffs that could crack a chalkboard. Give me a handful of rings, and ring the bell. Present day Pink Lady, go on, get it.

Hussein Chalayan’s Light Metal Lover Palladium Revealed on the Runway

Edited by

This morning, Hussein Chalayan showed Paris his mastery for Fall 2012. Known for using technological materials in his designs, like a dress that turns into a coffee table, or a dress that moves independently (which inspired one of Lady Gaga‘s Monster Ball gowns) this season he utilized the newest, lightest, strongest metal on the market: Palladium. He partnered with the International Palladium Board as part of their initiative to make the metal not only appealing for industrial, but also that of luxury. Hussein Chalayan muses on the collaboration, “It was very appealing for me to develop an idea inspired by the lightness and strength of palladium. This partnership was a very natural gravitation; I am interested in materials that are not automatically associated with clothing. This is what my work is about.”

Designer Daily: 10A Suspender Trousers Company

Edited by

The name 10A Suspender Trousers Company is quite literal, like antiquated tailoring shops of eras past. What started as a small tailor workshop called AAAAAAAAAA™ between Daria Dazzan and Matteo Cibic, making 10 one-of-a-kind suspender trousers per month, two years later has become a full collection in a range of fabrics and sizes under the full name. With Daria’s experience under Veronique Branquinho and Hussein Chalayan, and Matteo’s expertise in product and art design, the men’s brand is concisely crisp and extremely well made.

Hussein Chalayan Goes Gums-Deep in his Models

Edited by

Hussein Chalayan is one of the last great showmen left in fashion — now that McQueen is dead, Galliano is fired and Marc Jacobs is stolen. Over the past seventeen years of his career, the Cyprus-born designer has done his part to shake up the fashion industry and challenge people’s views of fashion and art.  How can one forget his groundbreaking spring 2007 presentation with its tiny little robots that allowed six dresses to cycle through 100 years of sartorial history? For his spring 2012 collection, Chalayan utilized micro-mechanisms again, but they served a completely different purpose this time.
