Fei Fei Sun’s Guide to Shanghai and Designers to Watch

About three years ago, Fei Fei Sun was just a gal about China, hangin’ with her boyfriend in Shanghai. Several Paris Fashion Week video viewings later, and she’s got the bug to wear it all; to be there in it. Fortunately her razor sharp jawline and chameleon abilities have allowed just that and she skyrocketed her to the fashion stratosphere.. Her first season out, she walked 30 shows without knowing a lick of English. Which I suppose proves the point that you can get by on just your good looks (and in this case, polite, intuitive silence and a fearsome smize). If you turn the tables and find yourself in Shanghai without knowing a damn word in Chinese, check what Fei Fei Sun advises you eat, see and shop in her city.

Like a mix between the Highline in NY and the Catre Siene in Paris, The Bund is a waterfront walk that has been transformed from an industrial working ground to a beautiful pathway for runners in the morning, lovers in the evening.

That building that looks like a shake weight is actually one of the tallest buildings in Shanghai. Its panoramic view of the city makes it the tourist vantage point, and also the reason worth checking out. We say shake weight, the chief of the building's board says it reminds him of Pipa Song by Bai Juyi about the "wonderful sprinkling sound of a pipa instrument, like pearls, big and small falling on a jade plate."

When in Shanghai, order a steaming basket of xiolongbao. The word literally means steaming basket, because the dumplings within the broth are cooked right in it. When Fei Fei eats, she eats this.

The most lavish Chinese Gardens in Shanghai are well worth a stroll.

This shopping road winds in the French (naturally) Concession area of Shanghai. It is teeming with little craft stores, trendy shops, art studios and gems waiting to be discovered.

Off the tourist path, we meet Fei Fei Sun's favorite designers from Shanghai. Nominated by WGSN as "Breakthrough Designer of the Year" and named by Forbes as one of 25 most important Chinese fashion people, Fei Fei Sun is right to say this is a designer we should watch. It helps that we can see his designs in Vogue, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, L'Officiel...

Also on the WGSN "Breakthrough Designer of the Year" list, her whimsical unravelling of the feminine form has garnered the attention of Vogue and the biggies. Fei Fei is looking in the direction for design stars on the rise.

We were paging through the summer 2011 issue of i-D Magazine in the FashionIndie office this morning and came across Mother Monster in a spread titled “Summer Solstice.” Our conclusion? Lady Gaga looks weird doing normal things.

Sure we’ve all fallen asleep on the bus, gossiped on a cell phone and straight chilled in a lawn chair, but could this mean Lady Gaga is human after all?

Jourdan Dunn and Karlie Kloss, or Jourlie as they’re apparently known…somewhere, tag team a sexy photoshoot for i-D‘s “Exhibitionist Issue,” shot by Kayt Jones.

Edward Enninful‘s styling takes backseat to Jourlie’s (okay, it’s cute and I’m on board) lithe, lovely and leggy frames, but they reveal more than just their bodies in an interview with the mag.

Turns out Jourdan wants to start a line of jeans and Karlie wants to ~~ruin her life~~ have five kids, all boys. How…sweet.

Lady Gaga winks, hunches and uncovers for an editorial in i-D, styled by none other than Nicola Formichetti and lensed by Mariano Vivanco. The trio continue to generally shut shit down, creating arresting images, buzzworthy collections (Gags is wearing Mugler of course) and colossal dance-pop anthems. Theirs is a partnership that harkens back to the days of Yves Saint Laurent and Iman, or Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick or Keith Haring and Grace Jones: artist and muse becoming inseparable in the public conscious and almost interchangeable in their roles. For Mariano, Nicola and Stephanie Germanotta, the whole is greater than sum of its parts.

Really, what’s with this half-boob action going on? i-D might be trying to start a new trend, but really, all they’ve done is added to the list of editorial failures.

With the summer sun already bringing about those dripping sweat subway mornings, layering clothes is out of the question. However, if you’re a true New Yorker, the lack of layers probably has you feeling somewhat naked as you trek about town in a mere tank-top and shorts. i-D Magazine’s June 2009 spread, shot by David Vasiljevic, shows you exactly how to keep your intricate, layered edge, even during the summer heat. “Suvi In Studs,” despite it’s enviable Alexander Wang leather/denim pants and jacket, is all about the layered chains, studs and spikes. This editorial makes the layereing of jewelry a tride and true statement that the layered look can still reign true, spicing up even the simplest of outfits…afterall, look how awesome the chain and thread scarf looks against a bare body.

The i-D Magazine April 2009 spread, “Everywhere Kiss Me,” looks more like a 1980s ‘Girls Gone Wild’ still shot than a fashion editorial. Shot by photographer Katja Rahlwes, model Malgosia Bela bears all, slaps on the seduction and rocks the hooker heels for i-D. The style is rather simple, a whole lot of denim a and whole lot of skin. To be honest, I’d completely skip over this editorial while reading the magazine. What’s another pair of boobs? What’s another blue-jean jacket? What’s another sultry bed pose? Yawn.

R.I.P: Randy Johnston

October 11th was a tragic day for Ford Models and the family and friends of Randy Johnston. The 20 year old model passed away on Saturday of unknown causes. The half German, half English model was discovered by Ford Models through a mailed in photograph. Johnston was the featured model of the 2007 Dior Homme campaign and will appear in November’s i-D Magazine with Lara Stone. Ford Models had this to say about their recent loss:

“Randy Johnston, a beautiful, sweet, and loving young man. There are no words to express how much he will be missed.”

Agyness Deyn for i-D Magazine

Agyness Overload?

i-D’s May issue will feature not one, not two, not thirty (oh, to high) but FIVE Agyness Deyn covers!!! It may be a bit of Agyness Overload, which means any day now, remaining true to its cannibalistic nature, the media that has so kindly raised her to the status of “IT Girl” will ceremoniously break her down and leave her rotting size zero carcass on the side of some runway in Milan. Hell, if we did it to Britney and Kate Moss we’ll do it to this new face in a heartbeat.

The addition features editorials lensed by Terry Richardson (whose article in the recent issue of GQ is by far the best thing that magazine has produced in five years) and Nick Knight, in addition Deyn pens a few notes down with an essay on Vivienne Westwood. Plus, her mom and boyfriend, [insert forgettable guitarist here], get in on the Aggy gravy train by writing a few pieces on the model.

Can’t wait to ignore this issue of i-D as I pick up an issue of Us Weekly? Oh no, it’s started….
