1. Dress fashionably, but with a twist of your personal flare.
2. Be on time (which actually means a couple minutes early)
3. Listen carefully to what you’re being asked
4. Answer everything honestly
5. Don’t be afraid to ask questions
6. Don’t be afraid to brag about yourself
7. Be passionate, but not pushy
8. Be organized; bring a few copies of your résumé and know every detail on it
9. Research the company you’re applying for
10. Keep a positive attitude and smile

The Résumé: Sounds daunting, but doesn’t every French word? You’re going to need one of these bad boys for every future job you apply for. It’s important because it reflects what you’ve accomplished in the most favorable light. This is your chance to: Brag about yourself, sum up your educational and professional background, and most importantly, let us know of past experiences, internships, and other super useful skills.  Use lots of action words, do not exaggerate, and highlight your tangible skills i.e. Photoshop.  Also be sure to include personal things like your biggest passions to give yourself character on paper.

The Cover Letter: A résumé is more about what you’ve done, but a cover letter is about who you are. It shows us your personality and character.  Make sure you cover questions like:
- What makes you better than the rest?
- What got you hooked on fashion?
- What inspires you?
- Why do you want this job?

Let us know how passionate you are about landing this internship.  Side note: never rhyme “fashion” with “passion”.  Guaranteed garbage can.

Be Stylish: The fashion industry is all about aesthetics; so don’t be afraid to add some pizazz to your documents.  Choose your font carefully, have perfect margins, use quality paper stock.  Most importantly, you’re probably going to be applying for more than one internship, which means that every cover letter you send will be a bit different. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT mix the cover letters up and type the wrong name/company, or you might as well kiss your internship goodbye.

WATCH WHAT YOU POST ONLINE:  If you apply to work for anyone in fashion media, expect to be searched on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram… and anything else that pops up on Google.  Keep things appropriate.  Ask yourself “would I want this particular future employer to see this” before you post.  NOTE:  This does not mean be boring, stale, or too safe.  If you’re applying for a fashion internship — be stylish! Show off your personality, show off your style, and make your voice known.  The bolder and more confident you are, the more we will see that you have the intelligence to learn and charisma to make an impact during your time with us.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT:  We want to know whom we’re going to hire.  Cover letters and résumés are important too, but it’s the more personal pages like Tumblr that give us a taste of your true colors.  In fact, for some jobs (like web editors fashion reporters) having an online profile is much more important than the prior.  Writing a fashion blog or consistently posting about fashion-related things on Twitter shows us your drive.  Plus it shows us that you already know what you’re doing. You don’t need to have a huge audience, but you do need to have a refined image that defines your specific style and tastes.

This is a prime example of bad internet etiquette.

We’re on the hunt for an organized rockstar of an intern to help with all of the above: social media, writing and event planning. FashionIndie is an ever-updating fashion blog with a far-reaching readership, and we’re undergoing exciting content changes. We write as a team from our lively loft in midtown.
