Madonna gets up close and personal with her favorite person in all the world — herself — in the first image from her new lifestyle brand Truth or Dare‘s ad campaign, shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott and styled by Fabien Baron.

Now Mert and Marcus have been known to work miracles before, but even by their heavily-Photoshopped standards, Madge is playing fast and loose with her interpretation of “truth” here. As noted, the campaign images from Truth or Dare are outtakes from a 2010 photoshoot with Interview, for which Madonna apparently dug up her old face from the Bedtime Stories era. Either way, Madame Ciccone looks great.

Diva among divas and my personal spirit animal Diana Ross will finally get her due at the 54th annual Grammy Awards where she’ll be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award, her first trophy in over 800 years of shutting-shit-down. - The Kardashians have been accused of selling and endorsing products manufactured in Chinese sweatshops using child labor, an allegation that caught the klan unawares. Kim and co. claim that they are taking the accusations “very seriously,” but the head of China’s foremost human rights organization thinks they’re just a bunch of greedy liars. ”If they [the Kardashians] don’t stop endorsing these products or do anything to improve the conditions in the factories,” said Li Qiang, executive director of China Labor Watch, ”they are sending a message to the public saying, ‘We will do anything to make money.’” I think they sent that message a while ago. Naomi Campbell — Noted Supermodel, Bitch-Slapper and…Columnist?

Naomi Campbell is many things. One of the greatest supermodels of all time. A best-selling author. The Anti-Christ. Mia Farrow‘s scapegoat. A form of conveyance. And if the occasion calls for it, Simon Le Bon. Adding one more credit to her list, Nomes is now editor-at-large for the new German and Russian editions of Interview Magazine.

Campbell will, according to a press release, ” regularly meet great and outstanding personalities for this in-depth feature interview.” And if those great and outstanding personalities don’t want an iPhone-shaped bruise about their temple, they’ll oblige the catwalker-turned-writer.

If they cooperate, they can talk all about current affairs and world events, like what Naomi wore to have dinner at Nelson Mandela‘s house. Sadly, Naomi’s original, candid opinions will most likely be in German and Russian, and I doubt Google Translate can actually capture the ~~bitchery~~ intricacies of that much brilliance. [The Cut]

All together now: “STUNNING!” Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott are apparently the only working fashion photographers these days, scoring yet another gorgeous cover for Interview, this time with the always editorial Anne Hathaway for their “Fall Fashion Issue.”

Are you there vodka? It’s me, anticipation. Hathaway is interviewed by bawdy bitch-and-a-half Chelsea Handler so I’ll be waiting with breath more bated than usual for my issue to turn up at my door. And with Karl Templer handling the styling duties, this should be one of the highlights of the September issue season.

Meanwhile, if you direct your attention to the lower left hand corner you’ll notice that Carine Roitfeld was interviewed by Karl Lagerfeld. No big deal, except perhaps being the best thing ever. But again, no big deal. [Design Scene]

In this month of Americana, we want to celebrate everything in fashion, art and design coming out of our great country. And what would the American fashion industry be like without photographers? They bring fashion alive, setting the mood wished to be evoked by designers, editors and marketing teams everywhere. Here we will celebrate four American photographers to learn more about them and see some of their work.

David Armstrong

David Armstrong grew up outside Boston and traveled between his hometown and New York City when he studied at Cooper Union. After receiving his BFA at Tufts University in 1988, he moved to NYC permanently where he began work as a photographer. Starting out with black and white portraits, Armstrong began to experiment with landscapes and cityscapes in the nineties. Luckily, he also has a distinct and introspective eye for fashion – his editorials are moving and emotionally-charged.

Stella McCartney is giving her digital face a bit of a lift with a revamped e-commerce site and iPad app. And just for kicks, she’s debuting her new fall campaign starring modelfriend Natalia Vodianova on her website today.

The campaign was shot by the hardest working M’s in the business, Mert and Marcus in a topiary garden at a private Oxfordshire home. I think I just got all kinds of classy just from writing that.

While the ad will make its way to print in the September issues of Interview,Vogue (US and UK) and Harper’s Bazaar, McCartney wants to draw you to her new sassed up site for a sneak peek. There you’ll also find a slew of special functions for customers such as “Private Wardrobing” — again, classy — and a “Reserve in Store” option for customers too impatient to wait for a delivery.

The new Stella iPad app features a “behind-the-scenes” of her Team GB ad campaign, backstage footage from her fall 2011 show in Paris, a preview of the 2012 resort collection and a “making of” video of the dresses the designer created for the Met Gala.

Sounds like a hoot and a half, but I think I’ll skip that “making of” video unless I want to fall asleep. [WWD]

Anna Wintour has been credited/blamed/lauded/criticized for the current proliferation of celebrity-driven magazine covers of the past 15 years or so. Love it or hate it, a model has a better chance winning a Pulitzer than landing a U.S. Vogue cover — with a few notable exceptions. While stars are rightfully and contractually beautiful, however, not all of them can cut the couture mustard. Then there are those ladies who love the camera and the camera is kind of obsessed with them. Here, the 10 actresses who give the best editorial — and give models a run for their money — are given the countdown treatment.

Riccardo Romances with Givenchy’s Fall 2011 Haute Couture Collection

Riccardo Tisci is a genius. There, I said it. What he’s doing at Givenchy is truly the future of haute couture: implicitly sexy, exquisitely detailed and deceptively simple. There are no opulent presentations with ornate sets because the main and only attraction of a Givenchy Haute Couture show is the clothes. And for Fall 2011, Tisci presented ten gorgeous gowns that only further cements his place as my favorite designer in my heart and mind.

His intimate presentation at Place Vedôme included Tisci giving a guided tour of each piece and discussing the amount of work that went into the collection. We’re talking hand-cut tulle paillettes, embroidery rendered with invisible acrylic thread, hand-curled feathers, dégradé beading, metal intricately worked into fringe.

What does all that mean? Simply, stunning.

Tisci balanced this traditional couture attention to detail with his thoroughly modern take on sexuality that included sheer skirts, exposed zippers, cut-outs and in one gown, a full-on nipple-bearing lace bodice. This study in contrasts was also evident in the all-white palette that represented Tisci bringing his “darkness to light.”

When he spoke with Donatella Versace in this month’s Interview magazine, Tisci remarked that “in couture, I really show my romantic side, because in spite of the fact that everyone thinks I am very much a Rottweiler—that I am very dark and everything—I have a side that is very romantic that I show to very few people.” Tisci’s romanticism, in all its dark and sexual glory, is on display for the world to see in this, his beautifully ethereal fall collection.

- It wouldn’t be a Calvin Klein billboard without a little controversy, right? Well, this time the controversy is so little it requires further description and multiple views. Someone, somewhere, is outraged over the Calvin Klein billboard ad in SoHo because the table legs spell out an “F”, Lara Stone‘s briefs spell out a “U” and who wants to give me a “CK”? Sounds like someone spends too much time staring at Lara Stone’s crotch. [Racked]

- Jimmy Choo is willing to spend £500 million — with the aid of a few backers — to regain his old namesake label. Now I guess Jimmy Choo will know how it feels to go broke trying to buy a pair of his shoes. [Fashionista]

- Leave it to Mimi to paint a butterfly on her soon-to-pop baby belly. Though by the looks of the artwork and the spelling of “dem babies,” methinks Mariah’s other little one, Nick Cannon must have gotten into the finger paints. They’re so cute at that age. [Perez Hilton]

- Lil Wayne covers the latest issue of Interview Magazine, wherein he gets grilled by alleged racist Paris Hilton. The two have surprisingly a lot in common, like they both know: what it’s like to be in jail; what it’s like to make it rain on strippers at 18 years old; and what it’s like to bitch slap Lindsay Lohan. - The Celebrity Meltdown has become the golden ram for the press these days. Catch a celeb on their drunken, coked-up, hooker-drenched downfall and the issues go flying off the stand. Karl Templer styled models Tao Okamoto, Querelle Jansen, Kristina Salinovic, Sun Feifei, Crystal Renn and Dinara Chetyrova with body harnesses, obi belts, breast-skimming earrings and silk pantsuits for the spread “China Girls”. Dresses from the likes of Louis Vuitton and Versace glammed-up the ladies along with finger waves and eyes adorned with heavy and exaggerated makeup. 1. My brand spankin’ new Macbook pro, that I would have died without. Frequented that AOL StyleList blogger’s haven with it on the regs.

2. Multiple sparkly Milani nail polish. I did my nails everywhere, painting over layers to change up the colors constantly. There was a rotating slew of colors that cycled through the bag this week.

3. Lipsticks: Illamasqua: The Box (rouge), YSL fucsia, Iman (Pat Field‘s) Jaguar

4. Business cards. Gave out about 75, received at least as many.
5. Several WWDs and Daily Front Rows. I do admit I love reading the Daily.
6. Tickets. Many. Some I’ve disposed of, some made it. Some standing, some seats. None actually with my name on it.
7. Various runs of show. Ones that have lingered in my bag: Timo Weiland, Anna Sui, Dennis Basso, Alexandre Herchcovitch.
8. ESSENTIAL: Blackberry. Can’t believe it took me this long to talk about it. Maybe because I’ve done so much damage on it that it actually just broke. Fashion Week broke my phone…. now…. iPhone?
9. Because that’s not an iPhone, that’s an iPod touch and it’s been keeping me cat walking myself from place to place.
10. Biggie camera. I spent 3 years, that’s 6 seasons in the PIT with this guy. Not this year. Now I just got to use it on celebs backstage, at presentations and the like.
11. WIRES. OMG. My bag was like a radio shack. Heaven forbid I should be without a charge.
12. Small purse. Vintage. Used it when I stashed the big lady mama at the after party coat checks.
13. Wallet. Duh.
14. Deck of cards? The last free gift to remain in this bag. They’re usually the first to go when I get home.
15. Voice recorder, which I ditched for my Blackberry video camera.
16. Pashmina – much lighter than a laptop case. I didn’t wear it, my MacBook did.
17. Vintage Korean flower cardi I wore yesterday. I took it off when the world got mild.
18. Urban Zen literature – got my reikis healed (?) in the AmEx Skybox. Still confused about the process, but I felt great after.
19. My handy dandy notebook. All of my show notes are in this little thing.
20. Napkin from Timo Weiland’s after party on which Paul Steiger (as in Walter‘s son) drew shoes for me. I’m going to the press sample sale today!

That is all that remains. I’m surprised I didn’t find at least 3 Frappacinos and a slew of Fijis, but I lightened my load as I went along.

Mac – Faux croc tote from 21Men

I used the camera to take amazing photos all over NYC this Fashion Week.The Coke Zero is used solely for caffeine purposes but Lord knows I dont need any empty calories. I have two pairs of sunglasses to switch up my eyewear but maintain my air of mystery. The Marc Jacobs ones were gifted to me by stylist Robert Verdi as was the Kenneth Cole cologne, Reaction (the scent is fresh and young). Finally the latest copy of VMAN for the train and cab rides all over the city. And yes I still have the dollar that was in his mouth.

Alexander Wang’s “Image Piece” Non-Ad Runway Flashback

Alexander Wang is launching an “image piece” in the March issue of Interview Magazine and on a Billboard in Noho, according to WWD. It sounds suspiciously like an advertisement, but he has renounced that word, because an ad campaign would mean bending to industry standards. And Aymeline Valade as a Wang-bearing Samurai is anything but standard.

Craig McDean photographed the techno aluminum poncho, windswept around this warrior, and we’ll get to see more in the film of the shoot when it releases on March 1st. Layered as the Alexander Wang girl should be, it was styled by Karl Templer. But how hard of a task was that? Isn’t this the exact look we saw on the runway a few months ago…

And with so many layering pieces to choose from?! Frank Baron, couldn’t you have Creatively Directed Mr. Templer to the rest of the collection? Not that this look isn’t fly, but give me a wardrobe of Alex’s Spring look book and I’ll never wear the same outfit twice! Not that I ever would anyway.

Diane Kruger spills about inspiration for her role in Inglorious Bastards, her German roots and her knack for portraying a glamorous image in a time of panty flashing starlets. Tim Blanks, a contributing editor at Style.com, is the perfect match to interview Diane, a modern fashion icon.

A New York Times critic once described Diane Kruger as “too beautiful to play a role of any substance.” Cast your eye over her career as, first, a successful model in Paris, and—since her film debut in 2002—an up-and-coming actress, and the beauty part is irrefutable. As for the second half of that critical appraisal? Well, Kruger, now 33, is fortunate that her latest director is Quentin Tarantino, who likes nothing more than a kick-*** glamourpuss with acting chops. As the enigmatic Bridget von Hammersmark in Tarantino’s World War II epic Inglourious Basterds, she gets to challenge preconceptions about glacially gorgeous blondes. If the movie is a twisted once-upon-a-time fairy tale (crammed with more sadistic gore than even the Brothers Grimm could muster), the German-born Kruger makes a suitably steely princess—with a sense of humor. She even has her own real-lifeprince: Fringe actor Joshua Jackson.

TIM BLANKS: So who is Bridget von Hammersmark?

DIANE KRUGER: [laughs] Well, she’s a German movie star of the time, and she’s also a double agent for the British. But she’s not 007—not the supersleek killing machine. Bridget is sort of like Mata Hari. Because of her status, she knows Hitler and Goebbels and really high-placed people, so she relays information.

BLANKS: Did you have anyone in mind when you were conceiving her?

KRUGER: Yes. I immediately thought about a German actress who was very famous around that time called Hildegard Knef, who not a lot of people are really, truly familiar with. And, obviously, there’s Marlene Dietrich, but I didn’t want it to be too obvious. Quentin could cite you 58,000 people he was influenced by, especially a Hungarian actress called Ilona Massey, who played a femme fatale in a couple of movies. I must have seen at least 20 or 25 movies that he was influenced by and that he wanted me to watch.

BLANKS: Filming in the Babelsberg studio where Hildegard Knef and Marlene Dietrich made movies must have been a rather remarkable experience.

KRUGER: Yes, I have to say those studios are very, very cool. You do feel the spirit. We worked on the Marlene Dietrich soundstage a couple times. And the costumes were great. Also, I have to say that what Quentin does best is write for women. All the female characters in his movies are very powerful, very smart. He really wants women to come through as these fierce creatures.

BLANKS: What do you think it is about him that responds to women in that way?

KRUGER: I don’t know. A lot of directors idealize their leading ladies or turn them into these objects of sexuality and beauty. But for Quentin, it’s not about that. He really elevates you, but not in the sense of how well you’re lit or how well you’re dressed—it seems sometimes like he doesn’t really care about that stuff; he’s someone who looks at women much more as part of his creation. I feel like I’ve never been looked at by a director in quite the way Quentin looks at me. He and I really clicked. He loved Bridget. For example, one thing that is very little known is that I get strangled in the movie and he insisted on doing it himself. So in the actual close-up of my death scene, those are his hands. It’s like, “Okay, are you trying to tell me something?” [laughs] Quentin gets really obsessed with these female characters! My death scene was scheduled for one day, and we ended up shooting it for three. He didn’t want to let go of Bridget.

BLANKS: I think that’s what Alfred Hitchcock used to do with Tippi Hedren. If she ever was under attack in one of his movies, he would be the one who showed the actor exactly how to do something weird to her. I bet Tarantino knows that.

KRUGER: I don’t know about that, but while we were shooting he was definitely reading up a lot on Josef von Sternberg [the Austrian-born filmmaker who worked with Dietrich and Charlie Chaplin]and his direction. There’s actually one shot that was sort of his von Sternberg moment, which is in the tavern scene.

BLANKS: How is it for you going back to your home country, particularly a country that is so completely saturated with that period of its history—World War II—when you’re playing in a movie that’s bringing back a lot of the issues that existed around that time?

KRUGER: It’s a very different time . . . I don’t think my generation carries that weight anymore. But I’ve got to tell you, even if we don’t really talk about it, we get reminded constantly by other people or other countries. I get offered a World War II movie at least once a week just because I speak German and was born there. I have always stayed away from it because I didn’t want to be put into that box. What brought me to this one is that it’s not historically correct, it’s a very different take on World War II. And I love the idea that I personally, through Bridget von Hammersmark, could have helped bring down the Third Reich.

BLANKS: I guess it’s a variant on Helen of Troy in a way. She brought down an empire as well. You’re the destroyer of worlds . . . But a common theme in everything I’ve read about you is that your star has been steadily rising, and now you’re on the brink of something big. Do you have that feeling yourself?

KRUGER: To be honest, I’m not sure what that means exactly. I think that I’ve followed my little path slowly and steadily, and it’s not been an easy journey. When you think of Troy [2004], my third or fourth film, and how overexposed I was for the little experience that I had, it was kind of an exciting place but also uncomfortable because I felt like I was just starting out. I didn’t even know what I was doing. So over the years I’ve made a point to take smaller films and work a lot in Europe and just focus on my craft. I’ve worked with actors who were very helpful and a lot better than I was. For example, I made a film that nobody saw called Copying Beethoven [2006], with Ed Harris. That was a revelation to me because he really took me under his wing. But I definitely feel very good about Inglourious Basterds. I play a very powerful character. She’s definitely the leader of the pack. And that’s not easy to convey on-screen. I don’t think I tend to look that way. I feel it’s a side of me that nobody would have expected to see.

BLANKS: Bridget is also very glamorous, though.

KRUGER: That’s just her outer aspect. That’s not what this character’s all about.

BLANKS: Presumably, as a famous actress who is also a spy, she’s using her natural assets to get what she wants. She uses her glamour to further her cause. One thing I’ve always noticed about you, at the Met Ball or wherever, is how comfortable you are with being glamorous. It’s a lot more complex than being pretty or even beautiful.

KRUGER: I grew up loving actresses or actors who were very classy but who seemed a little bit mysterious because you couldn’t grasp what they’re really thinking. I mean, Grace Kelly always looked impossibly glamorous, yet you could always see there was something behind her eyes. And I’m not saying I’m trying to emulate that, but I want to be seen as, if not glamorous, then definitely as someone who has a certain . . . class, I guess. You would never see a picture of me coming out of a club without my panties on.

BLANKS: Also, the fact that you wanted to be a ballet dancer and an injury stopped that. I imagine that must have been pretty traumatic for a young girl.

KRUGER: Yes and no. I think what was more traumatic was I had realized that I didn’t have the talent to be a prima ballerina. It was getting harder and harder for me to keep up with the other girls, no matter how hard I worked. That’s a pretty sucky thing to find out after 11 years. [laughs] But it was also a blessing in disguise because that was the first time I felt like I stepped into adulthood. I realized, Okay, this is not going to work out. It was frustrating for about a year because I didn’t know what to do with the creativity and the discipline that dancing had instilled in me from a very young age. But then I moved to Paris to model, and that was my cultural awakening. Now, I think dancing has been the biggest thing in my life, much more so than modeling, and it still helps me enormously in my work.

BLANKS: Are you happy with the way things worked out?

KRUGER: Um, I have no choice. Yes, of course! I think I’ve been lucky! Of course, it’s always a fight to get better parts. I’m intrigued more and more by complex female characters because I’m more in touch with myself. I realize how screwed up or complex I am. And I’m flattered that, little by little, more and more directors want to meet me.

BLANKS: I always feel like an interview situation is a perfect opportunity for you to tell the world what it is you want to do. What kind of part would you ideally gravitate toward?

KRUGER: Toward either really screwball comedy, which I haven’t gotten to do a lot—though I get to do quite a bit in this movie—or toward really dramatic and complex roles. I would love to work with Darren Aronofsky.

BLANKS: The fact that you can dub yourself in three languages must make you a real director’s darling, surely.

KRUGER: They like that, yes—and I love it, too. It’s very gratifying because I know it’s my performance. I’ve been away from Germany for over half of my life yet I obviously have very deep German roots and speak fluent German. I’ve also lived in London and in Paris, so I feel very much at ease with those cultures. But I truly feel like I’m half American. I’ve lived in New York for years and years. So I think it helps certain characters to be more complex and deep because there is an international understanding of things.

BLANKS: So that’s how multilingualism builds character. What about clothing? You have a very interesting relationship with fashion.

KRUGER: Especially in period films, I think it helps you completely change the way you hold yourself, or even approach a character, for sure.

BLANKS: And then in real life, wearing Louis Vuitton or Chanel?

KRUGER: I feel the same way. Because I worked in fashion, I know that I like fashion. Haute couture is a form of art that I can appreciate. I’m definitely not someone who wakes up every day and thinks about what I’m going to wear, but on the red carpet, it’s reflective of the mood I’m in, or the movie I’m going to represent. I wouldn’t dress the same for the premiere of National Treasure [2004] as for the premiere of Inglourious Basterds.

BLANKS: And when you’re being fitted for your couture gown in a Parisian atelier, do you think about the little girl from Catholic school in a small town in Germany?

KRUGER: [laughs] Oh, trust me, I certainly do. Don’t think for one second that I don’t go through life thinking that.

Fashion Quotables: MIA on the Status of Art

“I performed at a show at the MoMA. There was this big dinner there, and I was seated in this hall with the mayor of New York and all these extremely wealthy art-supporting and art-buying people. There was a piece of work hanging in the hall—it was a fan. This fan was supposed to swing by the momentum of its own propeller. So, while we were having dinner, the fan was stopped, and the guy next to me, a curator at P.S.1, said, “Look, this is what art symbolizes today.” Like, that piece of art is supposed to be moving, but just to have dinner we’ve stopped the art. That’s what New York is like today. You can’t have real art happen in an institution because rich people can make the world stop.”

M.I.A. on the state of art in our fair Gotham in Interview magazine. Yeah, I know it sucks here. But at least your not getting shot at anymore…
