Where have they been travelling?

Rachel Roy: “I was in Ghana at the orphanage that Margherita Missoni introduced me to. She and her mom work on it, and now myself and my daughter my older one, we work on it. Kids run up to the cars as you’re arriving. Little girls, they wanted my lipgloss. It’s the same everywhere! In terms of what can make someone feel god about themselves, it’s universal.”

Thom Browne: “I just got back from back from Tokyo, and it’s amazing. Tthe best place to go is to the Okura Hotel and experience the lobby.”

Clothing essentials for the journey?

Rachel Roy: It depends because I have 2 distinct lives when traveling. I have with my girls, because then it has to be comfortable and quick: for example I’m taking my girls to Miami this weekend, so in my bag I will have men’s Levis 501s and indian thong sandals. And I won’t take them off. Then I have business, so that means I’m usually presenting a collection so I’m wearing something from the collection.

Thom Browne: A grey suit! Of course.

Were/are you a thrifter?

Rachel Roy: I grew up shopping in Salvation Army by necessity. I wasn’t that cool of a 12-year-old, I just couldn’t afford anything. And I didn’t like the options in Mervins. Also I was quite tall so things didn’t fit. I liked the hunt of it, and to this day there is not a garage sale – well you’re not gonna find them in NY, but if I’m away – that I can’t walk by without stopping. I can’t stop looking. One strong passion is making something beautiful out of something someone has discarded. That was pretty much my childhood. The other is proving that things really aren’t modern today unless you mix it.

Thom Browne: I used to be, but not as much now. [My involvement with Fashion for Action is] more for the organization [Housingworks]. It’s an amazing organization, they do such amazing work and give back. I think we’re all so lucky, it’s nice to be able to give back.

This documentary marks his 10th anniversary with Adidas – a brand he’s so suitable for because, as he says, “I’m just interested in how to cut clothing.” Trends mean nothing to him. Fashion is personal for him, it comes from the shapes he creates.

Poor Lindsey Wixson. The teenaged super in training fell about four times on her catwalk down the runway, eventually crawling her way backstage where Naomi was no doubt there waiting with motherly open arms rather than brandishing her usual cat-o-nine-tails to punish Wixson’s lack of coordination. After all it was charity! The audience didn’t mind and even cheered as the young model was engulfed in a sea of fabric on her numerous tumbles.

Then along came Whoopi.

After Tyra spoke — with obvious bemusement — about a girl’s foot getting mangled after tripping on a rose petal (first hint that you should hang up the stilettos) during the Top Model finale, Whoops Goldberg subtly brought up the models falling at Fashion for Relief to the shock and amusement of the live studio audience.  Joy, always the voice of instigation asks if something was wrong with the show itself…

But Tyra’s too smart for that.  She plays it off, explaining that, “Sometimes it’s the runway. Sometimes it’s the floor. Sometimes it’s the shoes. And sometimes it’s the damn model.” Behar, like a dog with a bone, won’t let it go, saying “It can’t be the damn model cause too many of them had fallen…” before the ladies erupted into a cacophony of squawks and squeaks at each other. But amidst the chatter we hear Tyra say, “I wasn’t there…I don’t know.”

Ay, that’s the rub. Tyra might not have been in Cannes for the Fashion for Relief show, but that doesn’t mean she didn’t drop by earlier to grease the runway and saw off some heels to re-pay Naomi the snub of not getting invited. Is this all conjecture and hearsay? Of course. Is it all true? Eh, maybe. But the ball is in Naomi’s court. And that bitch does not play fair. [NY Mag]

In collaboration with Vogue Italia, Campbell staged the runway show in Cannes and paraded looks by Yves Saint Laurent, Marchesa and Alexander McQueen.

Fonda, who at 73 gave a lot of the other models a runway run for their money — particularly these girls — came out to raucous applause as she closed the show in a Marchesa gown. [Telegraph]

But the Japanese fashion industry won’t let Mother Nature torrentially rain on their parade. Designers have joined forces to form Voltron a website featuring all of their collections for the Fall 2011 season. [The Cut]

Japan Fashion Week is a very important event, as it bolsters their Fashion Industry which even prior to this catastrophe were feeling the pinch of the financial meltdown world wide.

While there are any number of challenges facing the country, its citizens and its economy, these designers depend on international attention and orders to remain in business and your help is greatly appreciated by all. We encourage people to check out the collections of designers who’s shows were canceled due to the earthquake in Japan.

“If you look at any movement… it’s people rejecting what’s just behind them and pulling something out of the past.” – Vivienne Westwood, 1986

At the beginning of her journey into the fashion world, Westwood opened a store with design and business partner, artist Malcom McLaren. Through many incarnations of names, a store called World’s End (with a 13 hour backwards moving clock over the doorway) became the breeding ground for their experiments of unisex clothing inspired by 18th-century men’s undergarments, swashbuckling Pirate-wear and other historically sound yet new-age garb. The photo below was taken in the store, Vivienne on the bottom left, Malcom on the right.

McLaren and Westwood took the anti-establishment of World’s End to the runway. The first look below is a unisex tunic and pants ensemble, which was part of the Pirates collection in 1981. The next is made of sweatshirt fleece supplemented with blouse and baby blanket material. The third look from the Buffalo collection of ’82 is an antique-looking brown satin bra top with a full cotton skirt; the show note went to the tune of Take your mother’s bra and put it over a sweater with a muddy face. The fourth look on the right is a pair of distressed pants suspended by springs “to show the movement”.

The influence of Vivienne Westwood and Malcom McLaren moved beyond the streets and runways of London and far past the doors of World’s End when musicians got involved. In fact, the Sex Pistols wore their designs back when their brand was still called “Let It Rock”. With the advent of MTV, celebrity fans of World’s End like Boy George and Adam and the Ants became fashion icons before the world on television, in Westwood.

Vivienne Westwood drew great influence from philosopher Bertrand Russell. It is his quote on her shirt, “Orthodoxy is the Grave of Intelligence.”

With that, in 1984 when she and McLaren parted ways due to artistic differences, she went against the grain of the eighties. Where most of the industry was creating silhouettes of power shoulders and boxy suits, she drew from the Victorian era and developed the “mini crini”; a knee length version of the crinoline understructure. She also dipped into the seventies and Japan and pulled out platforms, but gave them a pirouette; the rounded up toe allows for perfect balance on point. Even more radically, she resurrected the corset, bringing it back in a liberating manner for it was no longer required. Feminizing the Scottish kilt, futurizing the corset and harking menswear back to medieval times, Vivienne Westwood in the late eighties was well on her way to stamping her unique print on fashion. She ended the decade with a bang: November ’89 cover of British Vogue.

In partnership with Google, the organizers of TGC have created a custom platform to live-stream on YouTube, broadcasting not only the fashion show, but also backstage footage and interviews with the models. Unfortunately, if any of the looks strike your fancy, you’re shit out of luck. That is unless you live in Japan; deliveries are limited to the Land of the Rising Sun.

Though specializing in fast-fashion, TGC will enter the luxury lane thanks to another lucrative partner: Vogue. Vogue Girl, a stand-alone publication, will hit Japanese newsstands on March 12; but before then, Vogue Girl will mount a special fashion show, combining local fast-fashion brands with luxury accessories from the likes of Yves Saint Laurent, Fendi and Marc Jacobs.

I wonder, with Tokyo Girl Collection crossing the cybernetic seas, if we can expect a similar event here in the states? I mean, Fashion Week could only benefit from a little J-pop.

Some collections are so good that they make an impact on the fashion psyche the moment they hit the catwalk. Or perhaps their designers just have their finger so firmly placed on the pulse that their collections are perfectly in tune with society’s shifts. I’d wager that both of those are true of Burberry‘s Autumn / Fall 2010 collection and it’s interpretation of the evolved men’s military fashion trend. The collection is perfect for the trend, as it’s GQ Japan‘s interpretation of both.

The line is called Intrique Fashion Accessories, and  they specialize in the up-market fashionable jewelries from Japan & Korea. I really don’t know too much about them, but I think these pieces are absolutely adorable. More pics below!

Nike has released their new SB Dunk Low “Will Ferrell” sneaker. Yes, we know it’s bad. The sneakers, which are to be sold in a couple of stores in Japan are inspired by the actors character in the movie Anchorman, Ron Burgundy. Oh boy, well, at least their in Japan.

Jason Wu’s flirty A-line skirts, bow blouses and vibrant cardigans have him ready for a coffee date with the ladies. With the fanciful atmosphere of Japan as his muse, Wu sent out a collection that was both ladylike and curiously clever. Wu dazzled his audience with his entire collection. From the flirtatious pleated cocktail dresses to the classy silk coats, Wu gets a gold star and a “Wu-hoo!” on his homework.

Japan Fashion Week launched yesterday and the designers who hit the runway showcased some amazing collections which will most likely help usher in a new wave of Japanese fashions on our shores. A city known for it’s quirky tastes, Tokyo played host to Mintdesigns, a strong array of Popsicle stick looking head pieces and patterned ensembles. Parasols lined the runway as models walked down in Hokuto Katsui and Nao Yagi’s designs.

Animal skulls mixed with classic men’s cuts, gingham played nice with short dresses. Overall, a fresh collection of desirables from a new Japanese designer to watch.

Painted denim has hit the streets, and not just anywhere, in Japan! The old practices of art have recently been getting credit from a younger crowd for styling their favorite pair of jeans. The designs feature a variety of works of art sparked from talented artisans. Depending on the designs, this could be an awesome edge to a laid back ensemble. I say go for it!
